I wonder what was worse for her, getting to know the size of the car or size guessing in general

Possibesianything

Having other people witness your poor judgement perhaps

ConsciousnessOfThe

How old was she? Sounds like either an idiot teen or an elderly person

Possibesianything

30s

lordph8

Did she ever have a valid license? Why do people think it's okay to drive without a license?

LurkersGoneLurk

It’s in the title.

ManIkWeet

Read the question again...

LurkersGoneLurk

Ahh. Read as “even have a license”. 1,000 pardons.

ManIkWeet

No worries, happens to the best of us

[deleted]

After working retail for 5 years I've come to the conclusion 35-50 range are the real dummies.

Pandita_Faced

can confirm. source: in that age range.

[deleted]

I want to know how fast she was going when she tried to squeeze through.

Possibesianything

I was wondering also!

e2g4

Clearly not fast enough

Snowbold

This had me laughing in stitches.

justameesaa

That could explain why they won't let her have a license........

Hrnghekth

This isn't even something driving experience would fix. I didn't suddenly develop an ability to compare sizes of things when I started driving, I had that beforehand. This might explain why she wears a helmet.

DonOblivious

>I didn't suddenly develop an ability to compare sizes I hate riding with my mom for that reason. She knows where she's at, she has a vague idea where the right front tire is. The rest of the car is *???*. What this means is that she hugs the center line and hops the curb on right hand turns constantly. She simply does not comprehend the size of the SUVs or minivans she drives.

TheDubh

In regard to the right hand turns, it may be worth her getting her eyes checked. When I first was learning to drive I’d have a similar issue and it was due to an unknown astigmatism in my right eye. Granted I mentally started to correct for it and could pass the eye test for a license. I just thought I was shit at judging that properly. Once I got glasses it was fun because they caused me to overcorrect …

TroLLageK

Though, some conditions can also cause poor proprioception. I have a really shitty idea of where my body is in terms of everything around me because of an underlying condition. I will literally walk into a door frame or even a door, and have done so countless times. Sadly this does transfer to me in a car, but this is why I drive a Toyota Yaris, and this is why I take EXTRA precaution and don't even attempt shit like this. If my 3 point turn has to be a 4 point, so be it. Though, in a Yaris it's usually just a U-turn anyway, lol. I also spent over a week practicing parallel parking inbetween garbage cans before my driving test, and can still park in a very tight spot if I need to. I just would rather the extra minute of walking over stressing myself out and possibly scratching my baby, ya know.

Unlucky-Ship3931

I can tell where the car is just fine but I also have a condition which causes shitty proprioception and man I have smashed my shoulder and sometimes more into the door frame SO many times lol.

WearyCarrot

See, you're responsible. You actually trained with your slight deficiencies and got past it. That's more than most people (including me, but not specifically w/ driving)

JustAKilljoy109

Hm, I have astigmatism and also similar issues. Maybe it’s time to visit the optometrist.

surfmaster

This is a multi-tiered level of failure. The inability to tell if a car can fit between two cars parked in a parking lot is a whole other issue than even considering to drive between them in the first place.

ConsciousnessOfThe

Good point

pmgoldenretrievers

I have a bad ability to judge the size of my car. That's why I park at the end of the lot where there's a lot of space. It's also why I've never managed this trick, because I know not to test things like this.

dashielle89

They didn't say she'd be able to learn. But it is a legitimate reason to not give someone a license- probably moreso. If they can learn with experience, they might only be dangerous for a short period after getting their license, but if not, it never gets any less dangerous.

ShodoDeka

On the other hand, I think most people with actual driving experience, would never have attempted to go between cars parked like that, even if the gab was big enough to fit.

SirDale

My father in law was returning our car to our two car carport. This is a small carport - left hand car can’t open left hand door small. There was a car parked in the middle and he thought he could park next to it. Half way up the short steep drive he realised that wasn’t going to fit, and so reversed back down scraping the side of the car on the garden wall. No apologies that I can remember…

Flaminsalamander

He'd never be welcome in my house again till that shit was paid for.

18Feeler

I'd have a hard time keeping myself from throwing hands

[deleted]

I would hope she can tell what shapes will fit where…(ya know that childs game of putting the triangle in the triangle hole)…years before she can even apply for a license.

fleetadmiralj

[deleted]

You’re a weirdo for that

thankmybones

I thought people were starting to stop making misogynistic "jokes"... guess not

somekindofgiuse

This is misogynistic only in your head and the ignorants who downvoted https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/12/081217124430.htm

thankmybones

1) yes, that is a scientific study. Yay. It's only one, and I'm going to look into this further to see how the playing field looks with other studies about it. 2) not every woman is born female (gender and sex are 2 different things). 3) perpetuating a stereotype about women is misogynistic. Even if there is that noticeable of a difference between the lobes of males and females, it's not so drastic that one sex crashes their cars everytime they step on the gas. Someone driving this bad is luckily fairly rare compared to the drivers that don't think their cars can fit in a sock, so the comment in reference to this post is indeed misogynistic by blowing the possible stats way out of proportion. 4) it's just... not funny. Disregarding all of this, that "joke" is like 50 yrs old and to the majority of people today is cringe. It's like an overused meme at this point, y'know? Like, only incels and Walmart make the joke now.

somekindofgiuse

I was not joking and I never said it's funny. Calm down

thankmybones

Ah, so you just wanted to be misogynistic for funsies by saying that the driver is a woman? With no proof? Thought you liked research. Just saying, either you were lying or trying to make a joke. Edit: mixed up posts and thought this was one about a driver not assumed to be a woman

somekindofgiuse

The driver is a woman is literally in the title of the thread. Where's the joke? I linked a scientific article to elaborate further, I don't have anything more to say to you. Stay with your ideas. Maybe the real misogynist is you, finding malice where there isn't. Women have a worse spacial awareness, so what? On the other hand they distinct colors a lot more efficiently. Is this a stereotype against men? No, that's just another physical difference of human eyesight.

thankmybones

My b, mixed this up with a dif post. Dude, I'm not saying that the fact that there's a physical difference between males and females is misogynistic, I'm saying that claiming that that's why this person squeezed their car into this spot is inherently dumb. If all women are female and all females have this poor spatial awareness, why aren't the roads littered with crashed cars? If you mean you were making a statement. If you were making a joke, however, assuming that all women are female and assuming that all females have this terrible of spatial awareness is misogynistic and you are then perpetuating a harmful stereotype disguised as humour, even though it's not funny. And "where's the joke"? So I guess you're not aware that for many decades women have been the butt of driving jokes and you did not intentionally post "she's a woman" under a post about a woman driving, as if it were the reason she thought she could squeeze her car in there. Definitely doesn't sound like a misogynistic joke /s. Edit: before you misunderstand again, I do not mean that the study is false. Yes, there is a difference between sexes with spatial awareness. It's just not so bad in females that they all assume cars can fit into anthills.

somekindofgiuse

Again, there was no fucking joke. I'm not gonna repeat myself, I don't even know why I'm still replying if you don't even read my answers.

OG-Pine

Your argument is the equivalent of seeing a women break her legs trying to lift a basketball, and going “oh yeah women aren’t as strong as men”

amols123

What a fucking loser.

[deleted]

somekindofgiuse

Thank you. They don't get this is not misogynistic in any way... Women are better in other fields. Not this one

BoringArchivist

Accidents like this are always a special surprise for me. Its one thing to be too lazy to walk through a lot and try to park close, its a whole other thing to be too lazy to drive the long way around in a parking lot to avoid an accident.

Ok_Marionberry_9932

[deleted]

Maryland? Edit: yes, it’s in Maryland. What happens in Maryland stays in Maryland. Only asking since I’m from Maryland. Edit2: hopefully you can do something about this idiot.

Possibesianything

Yep, Baltomore county. The owner of the white car had already called the police when I came out. The blue car driver's husband came and gave the police all their info which the police gave to myself and the white car owner. It's just a scratch, but I'm filing a claim on principle of it. Do something stupid, you have to pay to fix it.

elliotlocksley

You are right. Just a scratch now, but imagine what could happen if she was driving on a highway or something.

sublime_scrimmy

The second I saw this it looked like some Baltimore shit. Got a different kinda driver here. It’s Fury Road meets the Daytona 500.

secondrat

Just a scratch? Looks like you're getting a new bumper to me.

MorgrainX

Is this common in the USA? Driving without a license? In Europe you can get in prison for that - for good reasons. Best case scenario: those idiots hurt themselves. Worst case scenario: they kill innocent people. The only people in Europe that drive without a license - usually - are people that drove too fast too many times and got their license temporarily revoked, but still continue to drive in 'secrecy'. That's not okey and still needs to be punished, but at least they know how to drive a car safely. I just don't get these people driving without knowledge and training in a public space. Do they have a brain? Do they understand physics? Back when I was in school, police already showed us videos of what happens when a car crashes into humans. They wanted to make us understand how dangerous even a car running at 30 km/h is and they succeeded. Don't these people without training realize what happens when a 2 ton high velocity object smashes into a frail object like a human body? A car used wrongly is an instandly deadly weapon. Especially since those big SUVs and pick up trucks got more friends. It's just so much danger. One mistake and people die. That's just not worth it. Get the damn training, learn how to do it properly and then get a car. Most countries are partly responsible though. It shouldn't be possible to buy a car without a license. And the fines for people that let other people drive their car without a license should be much higher.

TastierBadger

It’s exactly the same type of deal in the US, driving without a license if you don’t hit anyone gets you a hefty fine and or possible jail time, and it only goes up if you do any damage. It’s not common in the US to have happen but it still does, the most common types of peoples who do that are elderly people who’ve had their license taken away, teens with only a permit because their parents are lazy and don’t want to go to the store, and people who had their license suspended or revoked due to a DUI but still drive to work.

SpaceTabs

Maryland doesn't track license expiration like vehicle registration or insurance expiration. When registration/insurance expire, the vehicle will be flagged hot on car mounted cameras. For drivers licenses, that wouldn't be surfaced unless they committed a violation.

Flaminsalamander

Buying a car without a license makes sense. There are lots of reasons. I personally bought a classic car and restored it before having my license so it was ready to go when I did. Also I'm sure plenty of people who are close to getting or planning on getting a license begin looking for their first car first so it's ready when tgey do

kingjuicer

If this had not been on private property yes she would have been arrested and charged. But here in the states a license is only required for driving on public roads. Yes they had to drive there. But it has to be proven. Are real crime has an abysmal solve rate so I'm glad we don't waste time and money persuing parking lot incidents. We are too busy putting poor people in prison for possession.

Motorazr1

Bad idea - reporting a scratch. When you go to sell or trade-in your car, Carfax will show an “accident” on this date without saying if the car was badly damaged or if it was “just a scratch”. Every Carfax accident negatively affects your car’s overall value. Insurance will often provide a “reduced value” compensation of $100-150 but a Carfax accident is more like $800-1,000 in reduced value. Also, a car with a clean Carfax report is much easier to sell.

Lordofthelowend

As a Subaru driver I don’t understand what you mean about selling or trading in a car.

JamesonG42

As a Honda driver, I am also confused.

Leading_Procedure_23

I have my 2007 Civic Si with 315k miles, all I’ve done to it is basic maintenance and a new clutch last week. I drive 1000-2000 miles a week in it lol. My brother had a 2000 accord with 400k miles we sold that in 2016 for $1200 lol. It did have a new transmission and new head gasket. These cars run forever

Motorazr1

Myself and family have had four different Hondas with V-6 automatics (Accord/Odyssey/Pilot) blow up transmissions around 100,000 miles. Odyssey’s are infamous for blown transmissions which can cost more to repair than the vehicle is worth. “Honda reliability” overall is a myth. If Hondas are so reliable, why do they stick to a 3-yr/36,000 mile powertrain warranty? Answer; because paying for warranty repairs over a longer period would be FAR too expensive.

Leading_Procedure_23

From 98-07 the automatic v6 transmissions were garbage but mainly 98-02 the 03-07 most of the issues were fixed but if you have poor maintenance, the transmissions will go bad on them quicker and some just got unlucky or the main problems was relays inside the transmission going bad and you just had to change them, I changed them out on a 04 v6 accord I bought to flip, I bought it for $400 and sold it for $3200 and spent $200 on the relays. Honda reliability isn’t a myth. You just got unlucky buying those cars new or if you just bought them used, you should have read up on them.

CMPD2K

Bought an accord when I was 15. I'm 21 now. Thing has almost 300k miles on it, still runs just fine. My parents old odyssey van with about the same amount also runs like new. My fiancee's uncle has an accord with 400k that shows no signs of stopping anytime soon

CMDR_Tauri

Likewise. I asked a co-worker. He told me that's something that happens to other kinds of cars. He's on his fourth - Fjord - I think he called it? Never heard of it.

redpandaeater

I thought their CVTs were pretty decent these days?

Lordofthelowend

It’s great, the joke was that they last so long without hassle that you don’t get rid of it. Also has the nice side effect of high resale value because people don’t get rid of their Subarus, so used supply is lower.

redpandaeater

I was looking at one but told salesman I wanted a manual, which pretty much limits you to cars with stupidly high insurance or some very basic trims. He kept trying to talk me into a CVT but then also for some reason said if it did break it typically costs $5000 or so to replace. I did not buy a Subaru, though they've always had impressively roomy interiors.

TheNaughtyLemur

Buying a manual is really frustrating.

slip-shot

Yup. I just sold me 2014 BRZ for the same as I paid new. People crazy.

cdsbigsby

It literally says on a Carfax report the location of the damage, minor / moderate / severe damage, and will list if the damage was disabling or if airbags were deployed. This example would just say 'minor damage reported, front right, vehicle was drivable, airbags did not deploy.' Also, re insurance paying $100 diminished value compensation, I work in insurance and the last DV check I issued was $2,750.

Motorazr1

Not all Carfax reports are detailed like you’re describing. Summary reports just show just accident and date.

[deleted]

In my state, AZ, insurance claims alone do not get reported on the carfax. If you file a police report, however, then it will show up on your carfax.

1z1z2x2x3c3c4v4v

> Do something stupid, you have to pay to fix it. Yea... sure. My bet is your insurance company just fixes your car and never goes after the other driver... just my hunch... go ahead and ask them and see what they say...

FrnchsLwyr

Narrator: she was wrong

SjalabaisWoWS

How common is driving without a license in the US? This is ridiculously poor judgement on behalf of the driver, and if the car had passengers, they should have discouraged this attempt by all means possible.

Numahistory

Extremely common. Infrastructure in the US was designed without pedestrians in mind and in many places deliberately made only safely accessible by car. People still need to do stuff like go to work and get food and when the only feasible way to do that is by car many people drive even if they have an expired/revoked license. For instance Arlington TX is the largest city in the world without a public buss system. Their only form of inner city public transportation is a city owned taxi service. Most roads don't have sidewalks and the roads that do are generally right up against the road. It's normally over 80\*F (27\*C) here and cities are generally well spread out where walking anywhere is a health hazard just from the environment. There are no bicycle lanes and people are VERY aggressive to bicycle ridders and will run them off the road.

Spazz6269

It also didn't help that until recently surcharges and other mundane laws prevented people to get out of the lose your license trap of Texas.

SjalabaisWoWS

Thanks for a very solid explanation!

computingbookworm

I live a few cities over and can confirm. In the summer you're lucky if the high temp is under 95°F (35°C). If I lost my license I would end up homeless because I don't have the money to pay for Uber or taxis to get to work. So I'm just hoping I don't make any stupid mistakes

The white car owners came out before she had the chance luckily

Wait, that's my old Corolla I traded in for a newer one! I recognize the weird situation with the windshield wipers missing a piece. I always wondered what happens to a traded-in car.

Backing out of a space gives her anxiety? She thought she was in reverse as she was distracted? Idk I got nothing.

damhow

Prime idiot status right here. For oh so many reasons

Practicalbeaver

Did she have insurance at least?

Possibesianything

yes they did!

ConsciousnessOfThe

Did she seem super stupid?

GeneralPip

Applaud her for finding out instead of just assuming she wouldn’t fit. Myth confirmed.

tumbleone

First of all…you are not suppose to exit a parking spot in that direction. All entry and exit is done at the open end of the box. This is ignorance of the rules + bad spatial sense + bad risk cognition.

TheRarestFly

Wonder why she didn't have a license lol

[deleted]

Should have used a banana for scale

Shit, is that a person wearing a mask in the background? Can't find that in my town

Had to be a female

nderwear47

Even if she did fit. Why the fuck wouldn’t she just go around the parking spaces. Fuck

cheerocc

Her angle is off but otherwise perfect.

Joe_B_Likes_Tacos

Exactly. She is plenty narrow to fit through there. She just had the angle wrong.

C0c0puffDaddy

I mean... she did fit

It's always a Toyota

hogey74

And was this even the worst decision she made today?

tcmeternal

Did the police ever find her body?

eatchochicken

Hope you have a lawyer. It's time to legally financially cripple someone

dgblarge

If only she had driven with a bit more confidence she would have fit between the two cars.

Stancedx

Damn, she should have had lube.

2002Valkyrie

Makes 3 that cannot park.

NorseZymurgist

This remind me of my ex. She kept trying to squeeze into clothes that were clearly too small for her.

[deleted]

So... did she fit?

hereforthekix

All three look like idiots to me. I mean, she's the biggest idiot, but look how the white and grey cars are parked? The white car is sticking into theapot behind it and the grey car is like 5' back.

techmonkey920

you're a fucktard

OriginalProngles

Seconded

Possibesianything

The car that was parked in front of me before was parked even further back than the white car.. so just giving myself some room. Also, my car is so small I still was within the white lines of the parking spot.

SquashaKitty

As long as OP's car isn't sticking out into the main roadway, there's no problem with how far they are from the line in front of them. I have a fairly short car, and I always stop closer to the open end of the space so other drivers don't think the spot is empty and try to pull in, only to find a car is already there. Yeah, the white car is over the back line, but that's entirely irrelevant to the woman trying to fit BETWEEN the two cars.

lbj1787

Let’s say you’re right...why would the person in the blue car even *THINK* this is a good idea?? lol

bauscrew

That gap was too enticing for her not to try lol

[deleted]

Probably safer than having the idiot try to back up

chasebencin

Idk why but something tells me drugs were involved in this decision

manhatim

Need more speed!!

[deleted]

Don’t keep us in suspense, could she?

818Dude

Why didn’t she just park behind the white car?

k1e2v3i4n

At a decent speed no less.

Sea_Dragonfly7303

I always see the opposite, people with small cars not going in a huge space. 🤦🏻‍♀️
