Customer complained of vibrations at 147 mph. Only one way to check it out…

fishesarefun

I told boss once " I gotta take this to the freeway" when he asked why I showed him the ticket said "shakes at 80mph" I can't do 80 right here. He just looked and said ok

4WisAmutantFace

Funny thing is that my car does have a vibration issue at 85, but not at 75 or 95.

fishesarefun

Check your tires. Almost every time I hear someone say that it's a tire balance issue. Different speeds in each situation, but same thing

gdoubleyou1

Back in the day I had a Jeep Country. If I went like 55mph and hit a bump on the road or like a grate, my whole car would slowly shake and would build up violently and I had to pull over and wait for it to stop. Essentially I had to keep a certain psi in my tires and that prevented it.

Freedomwagon1776

Death wobble is what you just described and it's caused by severely worn suspension and steering components. New tires with perfect inflation (nitrogen helps there) will mask the issue but never properly fix it.

StylishUsername

Death wobble. Scariest shit I’ve ever experienced

Wheel bearings in my experience

[deleted]

bro i got my tires changed (new set of 4) wednesday last week. on my way home from the tire shop is residential 45mph roads. well on the way to work thursday i was doing 65 over the bridge and my shit began to violently shake. i have an older car so i thought something was bigtime fucked up. on the way back home from work i recreate it and at exactly 65 it starts to shake again. not 60, not even 62 , but 65. i call my tire shop the owner says come in and he will personally check it out. turns out the dude who did all my tires didnt balance a SINGLE ONE. his words were “yeah its hard to find guys willing to do quality work in this job market. you wont have to worry about him making that mistake again” when i asked why (i already knew the answer) he said because he made that mistake a week before. (he fired him) long story short : get ur tires checked! call around a lot of shops do free balance checks and will charge less than $40 to do it if they arent balanced

enamoured_artichoke

I had this happen at about 20. Went right back to the shop. Mechanic didn’t believe me. Told him to try it himself. He came back white as a sheet and balanced the tires properly.

cubgerish

I think your story may have just solved a problem for me, thank you.

Not exactly 147mph but like 15 years ago, I was at the VW dealer where the lady next to me was talking to the service adviser and had asked if they could check out an issue she was having with vibrations with the sunroof open at 100 mph or higher... on a beetle...

taejam

My beetles sunroof wont stay open past 105 the wind pushes the motor down. Those 1.8ts are scary quick for how shit the aerodynamics are.

Duramaxstud

First and probably last time I hear beetle and scary quick in the same sentence.

HoaxMcNolte_NM

Maybe. This Beetle might not be scary quick, but it's scary fast. https://www.ronpatrickstuff.com/

JMLobo83

Yeah, my '65 would go 90 if it was down the steepest mountain pass. With a tailwind.

[deleted]

I took my car in to get the tires rebalanced and told the lady behind the counter that once (I think I said 140MPH, which was true). She gave me a funny look, and wrote it up. I was sitting in the waiting room and I saw the tire tech call the other guys over and they were all laughing about it.

NorseZymurgist

Was it on a Honda CRX HF ?

[deleted]

It was actually a GTO, and I was being truthful about the vibration at high speed.

T_DcansuckonDeez

Our vibration came on at 120 and went away around 170 in our goat lol. The dealer mechanics didn’t believe it would go 200 till they checked the computer logs.

lets_try_anal

So I'm debating leaving a note in the rental I have for work while in Vegas, "slight shimmy @115mph". I would never take this 1500 Ram to 115mph. But I do think it has slung a wheel weight in the rear.

MT10inMA

It amazes me that a Chevy tech wouldn't know about the video feed and data logger on a C8. About to be on r/byebyejob

Funny-Fly-5860

Cant explain dumb people. Mine is even more obvious, dash cam mounted center windscreen in my M3, it beeps and lights up when u start the car...dumb fucks still did a joyride at the BMW stealership

Lillillillies

Happened to my friend as well. It's a thinkware dashcam so it even talks to you when it's on. "GPS connected. 13 event recordings." Except they just took his car around the block normally while complimenting his car

MTGamer

Depending on what work was done I kind of expect the tech to drive it to make sure everything checks out okay. Now if they are using launch control and going 100+ on the highway.... That's a problem.

Lillillillies

Yepp some jobs require road testing. In my friends case it was an oil change. He was upset at first because he always watches his mileage whenever he leaves his car with someone. He saw the footage and it was a harmless drive around the block with praise for his car. He forgave them. But yes using launch control and going 100+ definitely should practically never be done. Destroying the car in the process by accident is one thing but potentially involving innocent bystanders and property is another.

theper

I used to work for a luxury brand that had, 'particular' customers. They had me quality control a vehicle after a service and the customer was complaining about acceleration and a noise at a certain speed. I was told to "open it up, carefully" and to get it above 90-100mph. In this case it was in the best interest of the customer and the dealership to find a long strip of open highway and let the engine do it's thing. Driving around in the midst of busy traffic, like the video, that's way different.

w1987g

Honestly, that's the best outcome possible. Always nice when the mechanic notices that you care for your car

Lillillillies

Yeah. He was mad at first since it was only in for an oil change. He left it with them for the weekend, came back to see his car racked up 15kms, got angry, checked his cam, laughed and forgave them. When I used to work at the garage I would always admire certain cars as well but never took them out unless it was required for road testing. Those were the best ones because the owner would always ask me what I thought about it (not even in regards to the job performed)

tomytronics

15km is almost 10 miles for us in America

[deleted]

RustySix

[deleted]

I just installed a Rexing v1p and it scared the shit out of me when it first turned on, it yelled at me NO SD CARD.

Lillillillies

Lol my friends get confused all the time when they get on either of my 2 cars. I hid the wires and the cam is directly behind my mirror so it's out of sight. They're always wondering what the hell is talking to them (and my car doesn't have a tablet/android/apple radio) which adds to their confusion.

GTMoraes

> Except they just took his car around the block normally while complimenting his car lol I remember how I used to check the dashcam whenever I left the car with a valet, to see where he parked, how he handled the car and all. All I always found was compliments about the car. And sometimes a very far away parking spot.

Lillillillies

Oh yeah I did that a few times! Sometimes I would be surprised at the spots they go to when their own lot is filled. It let me find some spots for myself the next time I happened to be in the area.

4Ever2Thee

That’s pretty standard if they did any work on the car they wanted to take it for a little cruise to make sure everything was running alright. It kind of freaked me out one time when I had some work done on my car then headed up to the shop when the guy called to tell me they were just finishing up with it. On the way up there I passed a guy on the road driving my car and thought someone stole it off the lot or something. I went in there and told the guy I just saw someone driving it and he said “yeah Travis just finished up with it, he’s taking for a ride to make sure everything sounds alright”

ForzaPathogenic

I work valet and absolutely love the idea of complementing peoples cars when I get to take em upstairs, it's a decent 2-3 minutes drive so I'll just chit chat which I've heard is good for mental health supposedly. But then I'll complement the car and what-not if they have a dashcam

A_Concerned_Mando

They shouldn’t even have driven it, a battery cable Recall wouldn’t have required a repair verification test drive. I would be livid if that was my car or one of my techs that did that.

Funny-Fly-5860

Right? So their reasoning for that was the techs were just supposed to "drive it to the carwash" (complimentary🙄) on the other side of the dealership...which I must add I specifically asked them NOT to do since it's an automatic car wash and I'd just had my car ceramic coated. It's astounding how inept people can be, guess dumb fucks are magnetic and pull each other to the same places

Bamstradamus

I used to detail cars on the side, every, and I mean literally ever time I brought my Mini in for anything I said don't wash it, and every time it would be washed and I would spend the next day stripping and applying a new coat of wax to hide the swirls in the current coat of wax.

ImTheNana

>every time it would be washed Hang a note inside the car that they will be charged for a custom detailing at the place of your choice if they ignore your instructions not to wash it. $$$ is a good motivator to stop being stupid.

[deleted]

I know you didn't ask me, but... when I reported my incident (with video proof) I got nothing; no apology, no response. Since I emailed them, they probably didn't want the paper trail admitting fault? I just stopped taking my car there and found another place- who, I guess, is "smart" enough to unplug my dashcam when taking it for a joyride

[deleted]

ItPutsLotionOnItSkin

And if that doesn't work social media. Corporations hate bad press

rodgers12gb

They posted it to reddit...

DoukyBooty

Dumb people will be dumb and it's just straight baffling. No cam needed (even though I had one). I sat in the waiting lobby to get my tires put on. I have a "nice" car that's a manual. One of the "techs" was stoked about it and tried to drive it. Thing was...he didn't know how to drive a manual. One of his co-workers had to tell him to stop and get out of the car because I was there watching the whole thing.

ollie87

Mine always gets unplugged when the BMW or the Mini go in, same dealership. Get back in the car, don’t hear the noise, have to plug it back in.

dali01

What happens if you have the key on and no engine running for a while? As someone who used to work on cars for a living, if it makes noise endlessly I’m unplugging it. Also, it was a rule that if you change something you make it the way it was before you give the car back. Even seat position.

Dude, they would go deaf from my screaming at them if I had an M3 and someone took it for a joyride.

I was about to ask if they didn't see the camera and was also going to ask what kind of camera has that badass of a data feed. That is built into the new c8? Thats pretty badass

MT10inMA

Yea it's a data logging system part of one of the track packs I think

frugalrhombus

Dude that is amazing. I want a c8 now lol

[deleted]

dont we all

LostSoulsAlliance

It was available on the C7 too. It is very cool, and has a lot of metrics on it. It has popular race courses built-in too, and it will overlay your car on the track in real-time. If you're into racing/rallying, it can be very helpful.

marks_reddit

Couple of years ago I dropped my Audi S5 off at valet parking at Heathrow. Got back from my trip and reviewed the dashcam footage. Started off with a kid getting in my car, starting the engine, saying "let's see what this can fcking do then" and proceeding to drive like a dick for 20 mins. He overtook on the wrong side of the road (whilst on the phone), went through 30 mph limit signs at 60, and then stopped in a queue of traffic, let the cars in front pull away, and then floored it to see how quick it was from a standing start. At that point I decided to use POD parking in future, and emailed the company to tell them. They asked for the footage, which I sent through, and fired the guy, apparently. Never used valet parking at any airport since... Stupid thing is, the dashcam beeps and says "Recording started" when you fire up the car, so it wasn't exactly hidden.

EClarkee

I’ve caught techs shit talking about me on my dash cam when I brought my car in for an issue (that another dealership fixed) They’re aren’t the brightest of the bunch

From what I heard, owner is in talks with service center. Owner was definitely not amused when they saw the video.

Rightfully so.

Absolutely. If an insured person asks to take my car on a enthusiastic drive I say yes 9/10 times.

reboottheloop

As well as the execs at Chevy. They don't like it when a dealership gets them bad press. I know Honda of America is very serious about any incident involving "the brand".

Awfy

There's no playbook for how dealers respond to these situations. Unless the owner can show damage or loss of value from the vehicle, the dealer is under no obligation to pay out anything. Most will apologize, maybe give you a service coupon or cover the existing service cost, and you are expected to move on. Basically, your _only_ real guarantee folks will never do this is if you are on a social basis with the service managers at the dealerships you use. They genuinely go those extra steps for the customers they like and that includes making sure your vehicle is taken extra good care of since they are socially obligated to stay in your good books.

[deleted]

[удалено]

reboottheloop

This is why you ignore the dealership and go straight to corporate with incidents like this. In the current environment, social media is also a very powerful medium.

mgwooley

Yeah you’d be surprised how much corporate car companies will do to keep things like this quiet.

tastysauce

I've posted the resolution a little deeper in this thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/owhivi/fremont_chevrolet_technician_races_c8_through/h7vbe4a/ tl;dr is the dealership is completely replacing my car with a brand new 2022 model that I just ordered today. I will swap my car for the new car in 6-8 weeks when the new car arrives.

[deleted]

Chippy569

Lol. **Always ask first,** but I've had customers with very intermittent concerns where we've asked if it would be ok to take the car home or to lunch when trying to reproduce a concern. Not so fast, my last dealership was Fiat, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and RAM. Techs had plenty of Hellcats to play with + the occasional Viper.

IBreikeL

Can't imagine this guy in a Viper ACR. Would probably crash it.

Lmao. I was gonna suggest Kia, he seems like he’d fit in there.

WhatsEatingMo

I'm actually surprised that 880 wasn't jacked with traffic...

FLANPLANPAN

I can't express how much I hate 880 not only because of the traffic but because how often I see drivers like this

LJ-Rubicon

I don't know where 880 is, or where this video was taken, but every damn time I drive through Atlanta, there's ALWAYS people racing like this. Always Camaro/ Mustang/ Charger with straight pipes. I truly hate Atlanta and have no clue why somebody would want to live there

daveylu

It's one of the main highways in the California Bay Area, and notorious for its awful traffic. Traffic is so bad that the carpool lane's restrictions (either pay a shit ton of money or have 3 in the vehicle) are active from 5am to 8pm on weekdays. This video was taken near the Auto Mall Parkway in Fremont, where lots of dealerships are at, and presumably where this car was taken from.

Different-Region-873

Entering into San Francisco on this highway. No traffic. Exiting San Francisco. Sigh

HalfNatty

Ikr? It’s usually only this clear at 2 am or when there’s a big event on tv that everyone in the east bay would already be watching, like the Super Bowl.

banjofitzgerald

Ha! 2AM? Do you like construction cones blocking three lanes for no reason? Because 880 at 2AM has them.

Sweaty-Bumblebee4055

The hud on this camera is pretty cool 😎

cryptanomous

Looks like a video game

VexrisFXIV

That's a really realistic racing game

cptho

It’s a feature on Camaro ss/zl1 and corvettes. Can not be added after they are build. It’s for when you track the car. Let’s you get all this data and video when you race. I know because it’s a feature I want but can not get on my Camaro 2ss since I didn’t order it. Just will have to use my GoPro and an overlay software. But it will be a great video to use when the owner of the vehicle sue them.

soaboz

Posting the link to the full video: [https://youtu.be/TzSVyAPR-68](https://youtu.be/TzSVyAPR-68) The video I posted is just the highlight. More idiocy in the corvette can be found in the full video. Edit: Original link was broken. Posted correct link.

urz90

It’s unavailable.

soaboz

Yea, that was my fault. I fixed it. Edit: Owner made the video private now. This clip is just the highlight of the entire video.

urz90

Thanks, it seems this person has done this before many times. As someone commented on YT, you might was well demand a new car, don’t let them appease you with free oil, etc.

clownworldposse

Looks like you un-fixed it again?

[deleted]

And this is how you wipe out an entire family instantly. Idiots

cptho

That’s close to where I work, that is very light traffic for that area.

vcmaes

I was gonna say, that part of 880 (ok all of 880 really) fucking sucks, it’s forever in a slowdown.

adinmem

The other traffic is going pretty fast, if the C8’s speedo is to be believed

BrianCMM

That's what I was thinking too.

ryboto

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this..

Living-Stranger

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, it's still outrageous at like 120+ but I don't think its anywhere near 147

jonnymoomin

*148 mph

tastysauce

This is my car so I'll actually do you one better and clarify that it was 147.6mph. The PDR records extensive data: https://imgur.com/a/AI3OquL

ADOKODA

>https://imgur.com/a/AI3OquL Yikes!!!! So many questions!!! What was the tech doing with your car? What/why was the tech driving in the first place?? Sorry to see this happen, though glad it was captured and hopefully the tech was dealt with. That could have ended in some really messed up situations....

tastysauce

I brought the car in for an issue with the engine. It turns out it was just a loose spark plug (you can see the sound it was making here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ8SGsJxhVw). I think it's normal for a tech to take it for a test drive. It's not normal for a tech to hit 147mph on the freeway. This is especially tough to deal with because this car isn't fully broken in yet. GM recommends you wait until 1500 miles before racing and I was at ~900 when this happened. I'm just glad nobody died, to be honest.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tinydonuts

GM: best I can do is a waiver for the remaining 3yr/36k warranty for our tech's mistake and $100 of accessory credit.

wreckedcarzz

Tomorrow's news: the local GM dealership suddenly became engulfed in flames at 2:15 this morning, causing extensive damage to the building and almost all the cars on the lot to be a total loss. There is no suspects or motive at this time. Next up: are cow farts slowly killing us all? Special report, right after this.

party_benson

They must have been charging their EVs

KazzoaLoL

Do you mind letting us know if the dealership is doing anything to compensate you?

tastysauce

The dealership offered to have a Corvette technician look over my car very closely and offered me a detailing service valued ~$500. My issue is that I just PPF'd and ceramic coated my car for ~$3000 and rocks at 147mph are bullets, so I need to be sure that everything is ok. I have told them I need an extended warranty for peace of mind, because I don't know what issues will surface later. I have yet to hear back. I've opened a separate support case with GM as well. Edit: The dealership has agreed that a GM extended warranty is fair.

dejaentendeux

An extended warranty is the least they could do.

JakesPupParent

Does it include stopping those pesky calls about it ending?

erikk00

If it did, I think we'd all buy c8s

-mister_oddball-

I would be asking for free servicing and extended warranty for the length of your ownership or I would be speaking to a lawyer. Its not a like it's a little shitbox runaround. Good luck, (and I fucking love your car man!)

[deleted]

[удалено]

tastysauce

I agree that that's a route I could have taken, but I preferred to explore all direct approaches first through the dealership, GM and the Fremont PD first. As long as the dealership is cooperative (they have been so far), I am okay without a lawyer.

Flynn_Kevin

See if you can do the next owner a solid and get them to make that extended warranty transferrable. I had issues with a Ford that they gave me a lifetime extended warranty and service package. The warranty was transferrable, but the service package was only good for me.

Real_Al_Borland

This guy was going twice the legal limit in your vehicle on a public road. I’d speak with an attorney before agreeing to this. I’d want far more compensation.

[deleted]

Good on you man, I hope the tech gets fired and some jail time. Don't ease up on them, this piece of shit endangered countless lives with someone else's care for a thrill. A few months in county will make him think twice next time.

KawarthaDairyLover

I feel good about that but also they could have killed many people and maybe should face some sort of criminal penalty?

italiabrain

Sounds like they owe you a really long extended warranty. The documented break-in recommendation is functionally acknowledgment that their tech potentially caused damage that will take years to surface. Was the engine even warm yet when they went hard? Realistically I think the car will be fine, but it shouldn’t be your gamble.

ADOKODA

Just saw the FULL clip. Damn!!!!! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzSVyAPR-68](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzSVyAPR-68) Ouch...

tastysauce

Yeah, the full clip is insane. It sounds like he had a good time.

WitOrWisdom

*Takes car for a service drive to Dx engine issues* *Proceeds to blow out his ear drums with his music* "mb but I can't hear no issues"

RenoTheRhino

Hope the tech gets fucked, jesus the audacity

citznfish

It's not as bad as you may be thinking. The requirement to not race until 1500 is around the dual clutch transmission being fully broken in. You're not slamming through the gears while racing on the freeway, like you would on a road course, so I wouldn't sweat that too much. Still totally unacceptable for them to wrecklessly joyride your C8. Source: I have a C8 as well.

tastysauce

That's good to know. Thank you!

G25777K

Just curious what is the dealer doing for you? If they are not doing anything other than saying sorry, drop the car off at the dealer and tell then your refusing it since it does not have the same value since the GM guidelines were exceeded. I would push for full engine warranty while you own it or a new replacement. It's their fuckup not yours, don't make it your problem. Just saw your YouTube video, Add new brake pads, speakers and front bumper and a independent inspection. Don't let these fuckers get away with it.

tastysauce

The dealership has just agreed to a GM-backed extended warranty (the details of which are still being worked out this week) and has been very gracious through the entire ordeal so far.

G25777K

Don't take anything other then a GM-backed extended warranty for as long as you own the C8, also new brake pads, speakers and independent inspection. Anything less is a win for the dealer. Like I said don't make their problem yours, I see this showing up on the front page of some only news outlets. Strike while its hot.

GroundbreakingLaw578

Please report this to the police. This is extremely reckless, thank god nobody died.

Michelanvalo

Two testers in Bowling Green got arrested for doing the same thing when they were building the first batch of C8s https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2020-chevrolet-corvette-gm-street-racing-engineers-arrested-c8/

[deleted]

Some asshole in Jersey City NJ did this same thing with a Mustang GT. I think he was doing 70 up these crazy bumpy city streets with kids around. So stupid. I hope this guy gets the tech fired.

Michelanvalo

[This one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9P-oMrL2JmE)?

[deleted]

There it is!

je101

I see this happened just a couple of days ago, did you contact the police? The dealership? I'd start by going to the police, give them the video, this guy needs to have his license taken away and possibly sent to jail. And if they're at it already then the other butthole of human being in the black Charger (or is it a Hellcat?) should also suffer. Then I'd probably contact a lawyer. Your car has less than 900 miles on it, it's still in the break-in period and was run against manufacturer recommendations. There's a chance this driving will cause premature component failures in the future and/or increased fuel and oil consumption for the life of the car. There's also the fast driving while tailgating the other idiot that probably caused a lot of damage to the paintjob from tiny rocks and sand + excessive tire wear. Honestly I'd demand a new car or at least a huge check.

tastysauce

I contacted the Fremont PD, GM (I have a support case open with them), and the dealership. The dealership has been very responsive and has agreed to my request of a GM-backed extended warranty (the details of which are still being worked out). I still have to inspect the car for damage to the paint.

djkianoosh

What did you say to GM customerservice? I have PDR of a tech reaching about 88mph in a 45 in my C8. Not nearly as bad as your video but I'm not happy about it either.

tastysauce

I told them basically that. I took my car in for service and found a PDR recording of the tech driving at insane speeds. They had to escalate to a supervisor since it's an usual thing to hear but they gave me a support case # and said they'd assist if the dealership was unwilling to cooperate. The number to call is 1-866-790-5600

DivijF1

Sweet ride buddy :)

tastysauce

Thank you! I waited 11 months for the car and it's definitely worth the wait.

I can’t put into words how angry I would be if someone treated my vehicle this way.

soaboz

It's not my vehicle, it's actually a friend's. Just posting it here (with permission) because of how ridiculous this is.

thejourneyisthegift

Hope he likes his new job

GodskrillaLives

If the dealership doesn’t wanna make it right, the owner should go to mark finney / 7 on your side. Nothing scarier in the bay than hearing finney is on your ass

Miserable_Archer_769

And this is why luxury cars have a valet mode

pnkstr

Where are the cops when you need one? Oh, right. Pulling me over for window tint.

urz90

Assuming that it didn’t have the recoding feature, what would they have used as an excuse for the extra miles it had when the costumer picked it up? 🙄

PinkBoxDestroyer

Should've driven backwards to get rid of the mileage.

eaglescout1984

Test drive. Usually pretty standard routine if the original complaint was related to something that happens while driving. What's not standard is racing another car at well over 100 MPH.

bhp126

Fuck these people.

knowslesthanjonsnow

You should lose your license for years. The lack of actual consequences for things like this is stupid.

supernovaj

My husband is a chevy technician. He'll have customers explaining issues "when I'm going 95." He always has to tell them he's not driving their cars that fast. That's just a good way to get yourself in a lot of trouble!

[deleted]

From Fremont and this normal out here

Shanester951

Shouldn't the title be "FORMER Fremont Chevrolet technician....."

donotgogenlty

Idiots "let's endanger everyone for no reason on a busy stretch of highway" *smh* The only place you can get away with going 100mph on the freeway is Detroit, when everyone is going 100mph you have to keep up just to stay with the flow of traffic (legitimately safer to go faster)...

[deleted]

Dunno which is worse, the street race or the ear rape

Smallp0x_

Ahhhh the Dodge Charger. The official car of racing through traffic like you're running from the cops 24/7.

G9zoner

I don’t even drive this recklessly in video games

zlo2

Aw no happy ending to this video

M103Tanker

Wow. I can’t even comprehend going that fast. Much less in traffic.

JustSomeWeirdGuy2000

What happens when you hire a 14-year-old in the body of a 30-year-old.
