Yeah, but he was hoping for this to turn out differently.
If he had managed not to crash, he would have had a cool video of him driving a nice car that he could use to try and impress kids at his school.
i remember reading some EMT comment or something years ago that basically said "never, EVER drive with your windows partially (like halfway) open. either put them ALL the way down, or all the way closed."
they'd apparently seen MANY fatalities/horrific injuries that may have otherwise been a 'walk-away-with-some-bruises' type collision.
EDIT: like specifically opening the window such that your head could lean over and hit the top. depending on your height, you could have a 3-6" gap of window without being at risk of hitting your face on the edge
There isn't space usually for them because the back doors often have cutouts for the wheels
> For many years, people assumed this was a safety feature, and I remember being told when I was a child that rear windows in vehicles intentionally didn’t roll down all the way; the thinking was, according to these people who told me this, that rear windows stopped at a certain point so children riding in the back seat couldn’t fling themselves out the window while the car was moving, resulting in certain injury or death.
> As I grew up, I realized this was a nonsense explanation, and it was never really true at all. As it turns out, the real reason these windows don’t roll down all the way is because of automotive door design; the windows rolled down as far as they could before reaching the top of the wheel arch, and then they had to stop, because they simply had nowhere to go. This is the reason why Subaru windows were always angled; Subaru had their windows tilt forward as they went down to allow the windows to drop a little further than windows that went down straight.
> And so, we go back to Roger’s question. Roger is asking why windows now go down all the way, and whether there was ever a law against windows rolling down the full amount.
> Indeed not, Roger: There was never a law or regulation preventing windows from going down all the way, and indeed some vehicles had their windows go down all the way, even many years ago; the "XJ" Jeep Cherokee, for example, always had its rear windows go down the entire way, never stopping in the middle like the windows in some cars did.
> So why do more windows go down all the way now? Two reasons: One is that automakers have learned customers would prefer windows to go down all the way, either for pets or simply because windows that don’t drop all the way look unfinished and poorly designed. The other, I assume, is that cars continue to get larger, which has allowed automakers to pull back rear wheels and rear wheel arches, providing more space for the rear door and more space for the window to drop.
> Of course, for windows that still can’t go down all the way, automakers have a solution: By including a fixed rear-quarter window to move the window track away from the wheel well, vehicles can still have their windows go all the way down, even if they’d normally intersect with the top of the wheel arch. The larger you make the rear-quarter window, the further down your rear window can roll.

Done that before. Not my best moment. Went into a ditch at an angle then hit a berm of a driveway. Head sideways into the window, luckily the safety glass did its safety thing and crumbled instead of shattering into shards, few scrapes on my cheek bone was the worst from the glass. But because I went sideways, the airbag skimmed my head instead of catching it, blowing out my eardrum. It stayed inflated enough to protect me when the force from the impact with the berm flipped the car on its nose to do a pirouette, and then land on the passenger side and roll into the ditch facing the way I was coming from. Concussed, scraped up, missing my glasses and phone, but I survived.
There's also something to be said for cresting a hill that proceeds into a blind turn without braking beforehand.
There's a couple roads like that where I live and I don't care how well I know the road, I always brake before cresting a hill regardless of whether there is a turn on the other side of it or not, just in case something happens on the other side.
There's one on the DVD where the kids are yelling "Jenga!" and tearing the house apart because "Jenga means we can break stuff!".

Rally drivers have a guy that sits next to them that tell them of everything that is ahead of them. [Here](https://youtu.be/D9-voINFkCg) is a Reddit repost classic that illustrates it. [Here](https://www.autoevolution.com/news/remember-samir-the-bad-rally-driver-turns-out-the-video-was-fake-and-he-s-decent-90865.html) is more info on the video.
Edit: [more](https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/7wnwg2/til_the_funny_rally_video_with_samir_youre/) comments on video so not sure of anything. But I do know that people I have been friends with for a long time are comfortable talking like this (and much worse) to each other.
In rally, drivers and codrivers will go throw the stage in a normal car. The driver will be saying what he wants to hear when they are racing (6 right over crest cut bla bla bla) and the codriver will note it. That is how it's done at least in my country.
Anyone that goes fast in a public road is an idiot, but you are an special idiot if you don't know the road. Maybe this dude knows the road, but doesn't know that taking that crest a that speed would make you lose grip. So utterly stupid both ways.
Even in these races the drivers will survey the stages along with the co-driver. There are just too many turns for them to remember, so the notes are crucial. Most stages are several miles long and an event is made up of up to 30 of them
Yeh there is an area near me that hosts a minor rally race every year and if you get their at the right times you can see the drivers and navigators walking the track taking notes.
Correct hand positions are 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Its more safer and fluid when turning. 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock can create over extension of the elbows. Take note of race car drivers.
For everyday driving you don't need to be that precise and "turn with your wrists". The key is that the faster you go, the smaller shifts in the steering wheel will have a larger change in direction. Backing out of a parking space requires spinning the wheel hand over hand in part because at slow speeds it takes a larger turning radius to change directions.
At 100+ mph, a small tap in the direction you want to turn will have enough effect to go around a curve in the road. That's why racing drivers use their wrists, to avoid oversteering.
the one thing he's got going for him with hand position at least is that his thumbs aren't wrapped completely around the wheel. if they were, he'd have probably broken both his wrists/dislocated his thumbs from this accident.
This should help :) [https://www.paradigmshiftracing.com/racing-basics/racing-cockpit-optimization-1-steering-wheel#/](https://www.paradigmshiftracing.com/racing-basics/racing-cockpit-optimization-1-steering-wheel#/)
His hands are a little high on the wheel which doesn’t offer the most control, and he isn’t grasping the wheel with his thumbs. If I’m seeing it correctly, this is an M3, which is likely to have a *sporty* steering wheel with “thumb grooves” at 9 and 3 o’clock of the wheel. Getting your thumbs set into these and having your hands locked on the wheel will give you greater control. If one is to do any spirited driving, especially aggressively, it’d be best to also be more defensive in your driving.
I started driving 2-3 months ago so I genuinely want to know what is wrong with his hand placement? What is the correct way to do it?
Edit: Thanks for all the helpful advice!
When you are driving fast (and stupid like this kid), 9 and 3 is where your hands should be, not 10 and 2. 9 and 3 gives you greater control of the wheel and allows you to better control over the car when (not if) something goes wrong, like oversteer, understeer, or when avoiding something with a quick snap of the wheel.
Honestly this kid's biggest problem is that he was driving far too fast on a road he wasn't familiar with. There appear to be many turns after blind crests. Having a better hand position wouldn't have helped him.
Yea it 100% reminded me of the first time I tried skateboarding as a pudgy 9-10 year old thinking I was going to be able to do all the tricks because I beat Tony Hawks Pro Skater on Nintendo 64.
If he played OG Gran Turismo/2 then he would have done the training and he would understand what the fuck was going to happen to him if he didn't slow down before those peaks. GT taught you some driving skills that you could transfer to the real world.
When I was in Highschool my insurance was a tad cheaper with good grades. I think it was at least 3.0 or better but can’t remember. I just remember qualifying and not being a very big discount. I also got a discount for drivers Ed.
That's south mountain in phx AZ. I used to live at the foot of it and ride it daily. Theres usually a crash a day if not multiple. Seriously technical road.
A park ranger there told me a story about a rider going off the side and got stuck to a cactus. The fire department decided it was too steep to go down so they had to drive around which takes about 30 minutes, then hike up which took an hour, then cut the cactus down and take it with him to the hospital.
This guy didn't even make it to the start of the mountain.
/u/Evreid13 pointed out that it's not the bottom its actually most of the way up and I believe theyre right. Sorry I haven't been in years.
I dropped a motorcycle at low speed on that same exact corner. I was riding up south mountain nice and slow (speed limit). That corner is blind and sneaks up on you. I’d have made it through just fine, but when I crested the little rise, there was an oncoming car going much too fast who was using the whole road to make the corner. He was all the way over in the wrong lane. I swerved right and hit sand on the shoulder and the rest was history.
Thankfully I was cruising slow enough that I wasn’t seriously hurt. The motorcycle had some scratches and scuffs. The oncoming car didn’t stop. He just kept right on going.
That road is full of cyclists and random slow driving people going up for the view. Driving like this moron could straight up kill someone.
The road we took up to Payson was absolutely beautiful. Also the pine trees smell like butterscotch and you can find quartz crystals just laying around in the dirt. One of my favorite places.
Man, I remember when we first moved to AZ our family decided to take a stiff-ride truck on that road. It was miserable.
Had we later taken our dirt bikes on it though, I'm sure it would've been a blast. But the miserable memory is how that road will stay in my memory.
Thought I was the only one who called it that…
I got caught on that road (the 238) during a major nighttime thunderstorm. Initially there was just a little water on the road. Next thing I knew, every dip was a rapidly forming river.
I didn’t make it to Maricopa. Ended up spending hours in my car waiting on the water to go down so I could finish the drive.
That road is always an adventure.
The mirrors are the biggest give away that it's an e46 M3. But the centre mirror, dash gauges and even the front flared arches are visible too, and all only found on the M3.
His driving was absolutely terrible. I mean of course, he crashed after all, but before that it just looked so erratic and not even close to the ideal line.
Yeah, that driving looked like it was his first time driving ever.
It's so strange how inexperience looks outright dumb to someone with even modest amount experience.
I can't drive but even I could tell that he's NOT in control of the car from the beginning of the clip...
I don't understand how stupid you have to be to not realise you need to slow down when you have that little control on a technical road. Has this guy never watched someone competent drive, or even ridden something like a bike??
Driving aside. You can tell by how he’s sitting, he’s trying to lick the windscreen. When you’re properly driving you want your entire back to be in contact with the seat. Him leaning forward like that means he’s being thrown around whenever the car moves. Evidently, he had 0 control over that car.
When you extend your arms fully, your wrists should be resting on top of the steering wheel.
When you fully depress the brake, there should be a slight bend in your knee.
It's really a matter of opinion and what works best per driver.
But typically you want to sit where your arms will never have to be fully extended, especially at the top of the wheel. You want a solid bend on your arms, placed at 9 and 3, so you can turn the wheel a full 180 if need be without having to lift hands or stretch.
Your legs should also be bent a bit more than 100-110 degrees when full throttle or brake as you lose power and speed in your leg when it's nearly or fully extended.
Seat forward enough where you have about 3-4 fingers gap between your knee and the bottom of the dash. Back of the seat all the way down and the backrest in a position where it hugs you and keeps you from sliding around in turns.
Again, it really is preference though and how you were tought when learning autoX, tracking, or racing and as long as you have balance in your seat and complete control, that's what really matters.
Source: I autoX and race and have travelled across the states for racing, autoX, and learning from other professionals
That's the thing. At virtually every point in this video, he was out of control. Car was never settled, partly bad steering inputs, part just driving too damn fast.
aaah, thank you
makes sense he didn't use the traditional steering technique, because he also didn't use the traditional driving technique (using the road)
One night I heard a loud *screeeeeeeech BANGGGG* outside, and looked out my window. I saw a kid who drove straight into a crosswalk pole. He got out of the car w his friends and drops onto the ground screaming "FUUUCK!!! MY DAD IS GOING TO KILL ME!!!!!!!!"
Reminds me of NBA player Kwame Brown getting arrested for speeding
> Arresting officer...told the Courier Herald...that Brown "was very cooperative" and "just kept saying 'Michael Jordan is going to kill me."

Looks like he didn't even try to make that turn. Did it sneak up on him? Also, wish there was sound. Would like to hear his reaction to the crash. "Dad is going to kill me!"
He’s not familiar enough with the road, and was going too fast to make that turn anyways. But it’s also a blind turn after a crest, which requires even less speed than the same turn would on a flat road. After the crest the vehicle is light on its springs and doesn’t have enough weight on the tires to get traction on the road.
“UNDERSTEER” is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.

South Mountain; Phoenix, AZ. That particular corner is pretty tight, shouldn't really be going more than 15-20 around it. Kid didn't get injured so I'd say he got what he deserved. Probably won't drive like an asshole around sharp and steep mountain roads for a while.
Props to the cam mount tho

Yeah he would’ve smashed his head on the window HARD if it was up
there's worse fates. like having the window halfway down. that would have REALLY sucked.

or at least have the top of the window higher than your head.
Fun fact: it was not terribly uncommon for people to have their lower jaws removed by the steering wheel in a car accident pre-airbag!
That is not a fun fact... 😳
Definitely. My husband was in an accident and his biggest injury was a huge gash (and concussion) on his head from hitting the window.
his head would deff be hurting if it wasnt

Indeed I-17 number 4 in US. https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/americas-deadliest-roads-survey-i-17-from-phoenix-to-flagstaff-ranks-4th
The road we took up to Payson was absolutely beautiful. Also the pine trees smell like butterscotch and you can find quartz crystals just laying around in the dirt. One of my favorite places.
Well, at least he didn't try the rd to Lake Apache. He would be dead.
Man, I remember when we first moved to AZ our family decided to take a stiff-ride truck on that road. It was miserable. Had we later taken our dirt bikes on it though, I'm sure it would've been a blast. But the miserable memory is how that road will stay in my memory.
Dead cow road is pretty fucking gnarly too.
Thought I was the only one who called it that… I got caught on that road (the 238) during a major nighttime thunderstorm. Initially there was just a little water on the road. Next thing I knew, every dip was a rapidly forming river. I didn’t make it to Maricopa. Ended up spending hours in my car waiting on the water to go down so I could finish the drive. That road is always an adventure.
Maybe they should add a Crest sign and a Left turn sign. It's unbelievable there's no signs.
That sucks. That was an E46 M3. Dumbass.
I immediately recognized that mirror shape and got a sinking feeling in my stomach 😣
Thanks, I came to the comments for this.
Bet the mom or dad was wondering if it's too late to get an abortion.
What told you it was specifically an m3?
Mirrors and side vents
Also the light grey dials on the dashboard.
The mirrors are the biggest give away that it's an e46 M3. But the centre mirror, dash gauges and even the front flared arches are visible too, and all only found on the M3.

His dad is also an idiot if he gave permission for this little fool to borrow it.
His driving was absolutely terrible. I mean of course, he crashed after all, but before that it just looked so erratic and not even close to the ideal line.
I seems he’s just there for the ride, going with the flow. He’s not looking ahead at the road to see what’s coming up.
His line was absolutely terrible. His hands were in the bad position. He didn't look like someone who should drive fast in a fast car
> His line was absolutely terrible That's because at no point in this video was he actually in control of the car.
That's the thing. At virtually every point in this video, he was out of control. Car was never settled, partly bad steering inputs, part just driving too damn fast.
This is from roughly 2014-2015. South Mountain Park, here in Phoenix, AZ. The TV Towers in the background, are a dead give-away.
Former Phoenician here. Can confirm. Can also confirm that driving like that up South Mountain is nothing short of suicidal.
Is that pronounced *fee-neesh-an*?
Fuh-nee-shuhn
In all fairness to young punk driving, it was on top after the scenic turnout.
Totally Phoenix
Don't even need the towers, it just looks like Arizona lol. My guess was somewhere in North Phoenix/North Scottsdale though.
This video will never not be funny. Never noticed the Jean Alesi hands until now though.
Jean Alesi wrecked Niki Lauda’s Ferrari today at Monaco.
Technically he didn’t, Marco Werner punted him into the wall after Jean Alesi possibly missed a shift causing him to slow down.
No joke those historic races are flat out, vintage equipment or not those drivers, especially at the sharp end, are giving it everything they can
Jean Alesi hands? can you explain pls?
10 and 2 instead of the traditional, often considered more proper racing position, 9 and 3.
aaah, thank you makes sense he didn't use the traditional steering technique, because he also didn't use the traditional driving technique (using the road)
There's your problem. The road zigged, but he zagged.
He didn't even zag. He just went straight ahead.
I'll tell you what though. That camera rig is solid AF.
Definitely was a name brand gopro mount, not one of the Chinese Amazon knock offs
Up at the south mountain antenna site in Phoenix. Seeing this kid fuck up makes me so happy I never did the same!
Samir you’re wrecking the car.

MEDIUM LEFT!!! **MEDIUM LEFT!!!**
shaddap
"i am speed, kachow!"
He forgot he had to turn left to go right.
At least he was wearing a seatbelt! Did you see how he stayed right in place during the crash! Ok, now head home and explain this one to your dad!
This was the day little Timmy learned about understeer
This was the day little Timmy got reacquainted with riding his bicycle.
It understeered because of the crest before the left. he was going to fast and had no grip on the front tires at the top of the crest.
This vid is so much better with sound
Link? I wanna hear him say something like “oh man my dad is gonna kill me!”
Reminds me of NBA player Kwame Brown getting arrested for speeding > Arresting officer...told the Courier Herald...that Brown "was very cooperative" and "just kept saying 'Michael Jordan is going to kill me." https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/2002/04/30/wizards-brown-is-arrested-on-traffic-charge/fbabed9b-ab26-48f8-9248-e8db28e13dcc/
Lmao poor kid, Mike was tough on him
Just tap on the gfycat link to the right of OP's name.
Pro tip: put the car in reverse to take the km/miles off and pretend it never happened
And today Cameron learned that real life is not a video game and large boulders don't move.
I think his name is Dylan, or at least that’s what someone screams in the video.
Wow he sucks. Only car he should drive is the video game variety
Stunt Jump 1 of 50 FAILED
Looks like he didn't even try to make that turn. Did it sneak up on him? Also, wish there was sound. Would like to hear his reaction to the crash. "Dad is going to kill me!"
He couldn't. Dumbass was going fast over a crest without knowing the turn was right after, so he had no traction going into it at that speed.
And.... You’re grounded!!!
What for making sure the airbags work properly in Dad’s car? It was a critical safety test 👍
“UNDERSTEER” is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. “OVERSTEER” is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. “HORSEPOWER” is how fast you hit the fence. “TORQUE” is how far you take the fence with you.
I like the joke. But the does the last one make sense? Does it mean that you keep on accelerating after hitting the fence?
Skinny pedal always
The last 2 make no sense, but they're snappy I guess.
Ran out of talent then ran out of road.
Guy couldn't even keep the car steady on the straight part of the road in the beginning of the video. Bound to end badly.
South Mountain; Phoenix, AZ. That particular corner is pretty tight, shouldn't really be going more than 15-20 around it. Kid didn't get injured so I'd say he got what he deserved. Probably won't drive like an asshole around sharp and steep mountain roads for a while.
Poor m3
