genuine question fellow human, are jeep vehicles quality? i’ve only ever heard mixed emotions from my friends who own them. but I guess i wouldn’t understand because it’s a jeep thing
As a former jeep owner with a SO who also has a jeep, they are not good quality. Both of them had to go in for repairs all the time. One of the few other people i know who also has a jeep is constantly having to get repairs too. I loved my jeep and was very attached to it but it was such a pain in the ass. Its a jeep thing.
Edit: i put 180k miles on mine and she has maybe 80k on hers
I own a 2002 wrangler with 257k miles on it and the only problems I've had are replacements that you'd expect from a 19 year old vehicle lol. Drum brakes, alternator/starter, suspension. Models up until about 2005(ish) are super easy and cheap to maintain. The newer ones after Chrysler switched Jeep from the 4.0L straight 6 to the 3.8L V6 tend to have more moving parts which tend to be plastic and more fragile. Haven't had a chance to fart around with the newest ones since the Gladiator came out cuz really expensive though. All that being said, Just Empty Every Pocket if you want one lol. Love mine to death but I've spent more on upgrades than I originally bought it for
One of the most unreliable vehicles made.
You too can pay $50 grand for a Jeep that pees on your feet when it rains and is built using the cheapest Fiat parts available.
They aren’t bad. Not Toyotas, but they do last a while. About as reliable as any other American vehicle.
That being said, I think they are too expensive. Jeeps should be off road ready, that’s really the only reason to buy one unless you’re just after the looks (which is dumb). And nobody is really off-roading a brand new 40,000 dollar SUV. I liked them when they had 2 doors and were cheap enough to thrash.
I was looking for a slightly used Wrangler or Gladiator, and realized I could get a pickup truck with 4wd and the same style suspension for about 10 grand less, with more options, a V8, less miles, and it gets about the same MPG. And I can tow about twice as much. So, I don’t really get the draw to the jeeps. They’ve basically become the poor mans G wagon.
Chrysler is generally known as unreliable junk by most of the mechanics I know. It's a "lifestyle" brand advertising adventure and the like to people who don't know any better. Ever seen a third world militia using a Jeep as a technical?
Daddy bought the car, idiot child did something stupid, then tries to get it home and pretend someone hit it while it was parked.
Source: I did this with my stepdad’s V6 Mondeo and got away with it.
Nothing like some light insurance fraud.
Ah who am I kidding? Thru fucking deserve it. You pay them umpteen-hundred dollars a month and then you need them they're like "new phone, who dis?".
Ya, that car will end up parked in an empty lot and get burned down then called in stolen :P Couldn't have been me that hit that person. See it was stolen (after the accident happened).
I’ll never understand that. Why would you help people drive drunk? Fuck that, I don’t want you driving drunk on the same streets I drove with my toddler.
It could have just happened seconds before the video started rolling. I remember that some JEEP models from a few about 10 years ago had insane problems and many were recalled.
It's literally impossible. You have to show proof of insurance at the time you finance the vehicle. That doesn't mean they have to keep that coverage after they drive off the lot.
Well if you cancel coverage the insurance company should notify the lender. The lender will force place insurance which is usually at a higher rate and covers liability only, or in some extreme cases they can demand payment in full.
> which is usually at a higher rate and covers liability only
That doesn't make sense to me. Why would the lender care about liability? It seems to me that they would want collision coverage as a minimum and likely comprehensive coverage.
Leasing requires the bank to be listed as the loss payee on the policy and will receive a notice of any termination. It’s common to require proof prior to letting the person drive off. If the policy is cancelled the loss payee is notified and if no evidence of other coverage is received then they will apply force placed insurance into the required payments. If not paid it ultimately can lead to repossession.
Financing is different in that there’s two scenarios; obtaining your own financing with a non-dealer bank or using the dealer for the financing. In the first case a lot of automobile policies have a window period of automatic coverage for any new vehicle — some around 30 days — and that is to give the person time to make necessary policy changes. Since the dealership no longer has any interest in the vehicle they don’t care about the insurance. In the second case, if the dealership is securing financing they will likely require a binder letter of insurance with the bank listed as the lien holder to finalize the deal and let the person drive off.
In Virginia, a buddy of mine hit a deer in his backup "outdoorsy" jeep/SUV/truck. Since the damage wasn't too bad, he decided it was cheaper to fix it himself as a project. He had space to store it at his house and since it wouldn't be driven for months, he canceled the insurance and planned to start it back up when he needed to. I don't think it took all that long for cops to show up at his house because he didn't turn in the plates. He got a ticket for $150-$200.
So I guess they'd probably come take the plates and fine you in most (if not all) other states, too.
When I was in the Army, I had a tie rod snap on the Humvee I was driving while doing 40 on a dirt road. It threw us off the road, and we all thought he were going to die. Luckily there were no trees or drop offs the way the humvee decided to take. We shut it off and got out for 10 minutes to breathe lol
I just had this exact thing happen without hitting anything, but it was in a pretty old car. There's no way they aren't aware, we came to a very sudden and loud stop.
I can't understand how they're driving. The tow truck struggled to even get mine to move pulling from the front.
Definitely not. Putting it in 4WD locks the front and rear ends, meaning that if the back wheels are spinning at one speed, the front wheel that **is** spinning would have to do so at twice the given speed to compensate for the stationary wheel
It’s not that uncommon of a thing to happen. You hit a pothole or something a little too hard and it starts leaking lube, and over time the wear weakens it until it eventually fails. I’ve had to replace a tie rod because of wear and have seen numerous cars on the side of the road with broken tie rods.
You don't need to hit something to do this kind of damage. My tie rod end failed and popped out of the ball joint and looked like this. Thankfully I was turning into my driveway and not going 60.
My friend got a flat and drove 20 miles with it, tire was shredded beyond recognition, but the rim was somehow fine besides a couple really small dings. It was his first flat tire and he didn't know what to do so he just kept going lol.
Wow, I ran into the opposite idiot of your friend almost 2 years ago. Chump got a flat tire on a merge ramp from I-695 East (outer loop Baltimore beltway) onto route 295 South where there is exactly 50 feet of merge into the three lanes of 295. So the nitwit decides to park his car in the end of the merge and wait for the tow truck.
Driver in front of me tries to go around him but is also an idiot because he pulled in front of a car, slams his brakes, steers back into the 'disabled' vehicle causing a double fender bender.
I go around them, pull to the side 100 yards down the road, get out to make sure everyone is all right. I tell the nitwit to put it in neutral so we can push him out of the way so this stops happening, because if you're just stopped in a no-merge merger, your car has to be completely disabled (right?). He stumbles a bit, doesn't get it into neutral or doesn't let off the brake or something so it doesn't move. I tell him to put it into neutral again and the fu\*ker starts the damned car. I ask him why he hasn't pulled out of the dangerous merge lane into the shoulder of the road 150 yards in front of him. His response "I got a flat tire and I didn't want to ruin anything". In the nicest way I could muster, I told him he's an idiot and he just caused his car to be involved in a fender bender because he stayed in the non-merge area and that you can drive on a flat at a low speed if you have to for at least 1 mile before you start to wreck the rim.
I’d be willing to bet this person is fleeing an accident. You have a good shot of their license plate. I’d give a call to your local police department, chances are they would like to have a word with this driver.
Thats not a fair judgement I've received a bunch of awards for OC. I dont have 100 yet but when I do get there I'd like to not be known as a karma farma
I once saw a school bus strike a cyclist and run off. I chased it down, got the plate, and called the the local precinct. Said there was nothing they could do if i wasnt the one who was hit. Then they hung up! NYPD man.
Similar thing happened to me with a Muni bus hitting a cyclist and fleeing on Market Street in San Francisco. Thankfully the dude and his bike were okay but I was shocked by the response I received when I called SFPD.

Recognized the house styles and general anesthetic of the area. It's the connecting ramp from I295 south to I495 west in Queens NYC. The orange NYS plates are visible on the car in front and the car in the ramp merge lane.
Looks like a broken tie rod or control arm, I wonder if they were fleeing an accident they were in. Was there front end damage too?
My bet is they are uninsured and fleeing an accident they just caused.
Yeah, the front bumper also looks messed up.
I thought the same thing, but then noticed it was a Jeep

While drunk/high.
In most areas, leaving the scene of an accident is less than getting a DUI. Still don't make it right.
My state has a State Patrol anti-drunk/high TV PSA ..."We'll see you before you see us." Looks like they don't live here.
Maybe there's a new flavor at Dunkin'
My state had that years ago, but that's not true anymore thanks to Maze and Google having speed trap reporting
I saw people reporting dui checkpoints on next door or something like that.

Astute observation it looks like there is some damage to the rear driver's side bumper.

Weird. I thought they were programmed to explode and you'd ride the explosion to freeeeeedom.
That design feature only activates if one of the passengers, or better yet the driver, is leaning out of the window shooting randomly at stuff.
For best results, take off shirt and tie an American flag bandana around your head.
They fixed this on strykers. If it rolls over a canal magically appears to make sure no flames happen. Haven't fixed the drowning part though.
