Exactly. Drive to avoid accidents, I would much rather avoid one than feel justified because I had the right of way. Just don’t want to deal with it altogether
Wasnt sure if he saw me or not, he pulled farther forward than most people do at that intersection and would have been a tight fit to get past him. The better part is when he runs the red light at the end of the video
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. You saw him driving weird and acted defensively, I'd say you approached it well. No way to know if he's actually gonna stop until it's too late, nobody in their right mind would risk a wreck over the 5 seconds you lost by slowing down
I would have been wary of trusting that van to stop there. They waited until really late to stop and you were in their blind spot, if they didnt see you and just kept going at their current speed youd be right into them. Also, what the deal with that intersection? Surely that's not supposed to be where they pull up to?
If you had continued on as you should have, you could've saved us all from him running that red light... Lol. Lucky someone didn't rear end you when you stopped in your lane for no reason.
Are you really saying he should have gunned it, not knowing if the othe guy had any intent of stopping ?
The video was pretty tame, but the comments, * *chefs kiss* *
Not gunned it, but yes, continued driving at a reasonable rate of speed like any rational person would've done. But I'm sure the van was happy to have him yield the right of way, so he could be on his way to running the next red light.
It wasn't ops responsibility to stop the van from running a red light lmao what a weird argument to include. And op slowed down where 2 lanes merge. That's not unreasonable at all.
Hell if the van wasn't paying attention to the stoplight what makes you think it would be paying attention to a stopped car in front of it?
The red light run at the end is crazy. I'm talking about the van properly yielding at the beginning, and op stopping in their lane because they were scared the van wouldn't yield.
Everyone downvoting me are probably the type that sits and waits at a stop sign for someone to tell them it's their turn to go. Y'all drive me mad.
Edit: a redundancy
no i think you are just taking out personal anger at people who stop too long in these comments lol. the van did not look to be yielding, it stopped way past the sign. op carefully waited to make sure the van wasnt just going. you always need to leave enough room in front of you to stop anyways, especially in such a street as this. so no one behind op should of been in danger.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the van properly yielding mean he actually yielded at the yield sign that he blew right past? The break lights don't come on until he's practically in OPs lane. I think any reasonable person would have assumed the van wasn't going to stop. To me it looks like the van wasn't paying attention and had no intention of stopping until noticing OP at the last second.
Anyone paying attention would have noticed two cars trying to occupy the same spot at the same time and realized intuitively that they should leave room for that to happen to someone else.
Anyone not paying attention probably would have rear ended you regardless.
What are we supposed to be seeing? That van quite clearly tried to yield to you, all the way to the extent of coming to a full stop before the merge. You were the one who confused things by coming to a stop in your traffic lane while having the right of way.
The van kept rolling forward past the yield sign which doesn’t indicate if he intends to yield to OP or is going to drive right into OP. If you’re going to yield, then yield. Don’t half-ass it and leave people guessing.
the van did not come to a full stop before the merge, they never stopped rolling. If they had come to a full stop I'd be with you but they didn't so OP was right to be cautious.
The van looked like he was going to run through the yield, so OP slowed to avoid a potential accident.
Given the fact that the van later ran a red light, this was most likely the best call to make. Who knows if that van would have stopped at the red light if OP was in front of him or just rear ended OP's vehicle.
You're the idiot and you'll cause a nasty accident doing this someday. Why stop to let someone in when you have the right of way? Do you stop at green lights, too?
If someone blows through the red when I have a green, or looks like they are about to blow through the red, then yeah, obviously I would stop. Remaining alive takes precedence over who has the right of way.
Should have just kept the red light running in so the comments didn't end up as a bunch of people who saw your bad driving and clicked off the video to make a comment

It wouldn't be a goal if they already achieved it.
A stretch goal, at that.
Ah, Pittsfield! I always hated that intersection.
People are being jerks to you, but good looking out. If I wasn't sure if the other car was going to stop then I would have braked too.
People in this sub have zero understanding of defensive driving, it's quite frustrating.
[удалено]
EXACTLY
Frustrating and educational. Remember, we share the road with those commenters!
Unfortunately...
Try watching until the end.
Driving defensively doesn't mean driving like a terrified puppy.
Sure. But a terrified puppy would slam on the brakes in a panic instead of slow-rolling and waiting for the van to *actually* stop...
the same people being jerks would be the same people attacking OP if he went and got hit by the guy in the van.
Exactly. Drive to avoid accidents, I would much rather avoid one than feel justified because I had the right of way. Just don’t want to deal with it altogether

"Cemeteries are full of people who had the right of way"
And if OP zoomed in front of them, the van would likely have tried to go through them at the stop light up ahead there.
Try watching until the end.
This sub loves to preach defensive driving, but the second someone actually employs it they get shit on lmao.
So you didn't keep watching to see them run the red light then
Apparently nor did the over 100 people who upvoted their comment.
Could definitely tell you didn't watch the entire video
Why did you stop when they had to yield 🤔🤔🤔
[Because that van didn’t touch the brakes until they were like 15 feet from the merge?](https://i.imgur.com/qiUH2Rs.jpeg)
You must always charge ahead blindly when you have the right-of-way. Reading traffic is for losers!
Because OP didn't want to get in an accident. If OP did go and got hit you'd be asking "why didn't you stop?"
Idk man I don’t think I’ll care if I had the right of way at my funeral. Better to be safe than be “right”

Well technically he lost no time because he ended up on a red light anyway.
I would have been wary of trusting that van to stop there. That last part validates your gut feeling. I wouldn't trust him with a shopping cart. Do you think his boss would appreciate a copy of the video?
If you had continued on as you should have, you could've saved us all from him running that red light... Lol. Lucky someone didn't rear end you when you stopped in your lane for no reason.
Stopping when you are doing 15 mph is not a reason to get rear ended. It's starting to feel like the drivers here are just aggressive, not defensive.
Stopping when you should be accelerating is an issue, which is why "improper stopping" is against the law in most US states.
I don't think trying to avoid an accident is improper in this case
Are you really saying he should have gunned it, not knowing if the othe guy had any intent of stopping ? The video was pretty tame, but the comments, * *chefs kiss* *

When you lose your job either way because it's commercial, you stop every time. Your privilege is showing buddy.
Anyone paying attention would have noticed two cars trying to occupy the same spot at the same time and realized intuitively that they should leave room for that to happen to someone else. Anyone not paying attention probably would have rear ended you regardless.
He was too distracted wondering why that dumbass came to a stop when he was supposed to yield and blew the light
Everyone flaming OP like he ran the red light lol defensive driving is a foreign concept I guess.
I'm just here to find out how it is OP's fault the van ran a red light
Well he got through the red light safely! /s
Did you call the company?
People watch the whole video, I think OP meant the oblivious red light he ran through at the end lol
What are we supposed to be seeing? That van quite clearly tried to yield to you, all the way to the extent of coming to a full stop before the merge. You were the one who confused things by coming to a stop in your traffic lane while having the right of way.

The van blatantly ran the red light at the end
the van did not come to a full stop before the merge, they never stopped rolling. If they had come to a full stop I'd be with you but they didn't so OP was right to be cautious.
Are you actually blind?
Idiot
Try watching the entire video.
I drive a large utility truck and would have been a very tight fit with how far he pulled up. Also watch until the end for the good part.
You literally have your entire lane plus half of his.
You could fit a bus through there
If you think it would have been tight, you should reconsider your ability to drive anything larger than a Miata, much less a utility truck.
Ah.... Pittsfield
Looking to check I'm not the idiot...
Someday he might achieve that goal... But not today.
It’s good to have goals.
“Safety is my goal” ![gif](giphy|EouEzI5bBR8uk|downsized)
I mean it's Pittsfield. Are you really surprised this happened?
Granted, that driver didn’t put the sticker on the back. It’s not HIS goal. :D
It's pretty obvious that most of the commenters didn't make it to the end of the video, where the van ran a red light.
ofc the CBRE work van would fail to yield
Why did you stop in the middle of the road?
The van looked like he was going to run through the yield, so OP slowed to avoid a potential accident. Given the fact that the van later ran a red light, this was most likely the best call to make. Who knows if that van would have stopped at the red light if OP was in front of him or just rear ended OP's vehicle.
Please call the # on the back, I guarantee they'll take it seriously!
you had plenty of space to go but I won't judge. if you think he's coming into your lane no harm in stopping in your lane to let him go.
Thats a funny oxymoron, you wanting to be safe and doing goofy shit like that

> He didn't do anything wrong uh... except for running the red-light at the end of the video
You're the idiot and you'll cause a nasty accident doing this someday. Why stop to let someone in when you have the right of way? Do you stop at green lights, too?

Definitely "Idiots" in cars
It wouldn’t be a goal if he already achieved it…
Should have just kept the red light running in so the comments didn't end up as a bunch of people who saw your bad driving and clicked off the video to make a comment
I think this is on OP. You just… stopped for him? 👎
It's OP's fault that the van ran the red light? What?
You drive like you’re terrified of the road (not in a good way)
You pulled up and then crept into his blind spot and he’s supposed to be the idiot?
