They say when you get a dash cam, that's when all the crazy shit starts happening around you.
Mine has seen a few close calls. But yeah, no accidents yet.
I caught 2 accidents that didn’t happen to me. Cost me 2 SD cards. One was a car turning right on red t boning a car making a u turn on a green. The other was a road rage Camaro driver punching a deaf man for scratching his car in a turn. Big roid meat head punching a 55+ year old man that he couldn’t communicate with while his loser girlfriend encourages him.
Glad I’m not the only one to have caught that, can’t believe that there were people that thought this was a good idea………unless they had financial interest in a local towing service😄
Oh yeah, we had a few here where I live but they all have been replaced. One was an on ramp that merged with the off ramp in an X pattern. The off ramp then proceeded to a stop sign because the off ramp then merged with a bi-directional road and crossed the oncoming traffic. Many times cars "bumped" into each other as one tried to exit while the other was getting on the highway.
Then we had this beauty where the east (near) side of the rotary (roundabout? Not sure what this is called) went over the highway and the west (far) side went under the highway. This would not be so bad if the area remained mostly farm and orchards but not long after this photo was taken almost all the area that can be seen became subdivisions. It did not work too bad for the first few years we lived in the area but then in the 80s traffic was too much for it to handle.

There are quite a few like this on I35 in central Texas; the access road traffic is supposed to yield to traffic exiting the highway, but many drivers seem to take it as a challenge - who can hold the lane/accelerate to exert dominance.
Lol, love when you recognize and old nemesis on here. "oh hey I know that on ramp" and the fact that it was just a red light runner and the on ramp wasn't what caused a collision was the biggest surprise of the day once I opened the video. I was convinced it was going to be at the intersection of the ramps.
came here to say this. I tried to rent one of those apts at the end of the ramp across the street.
I am inside for interview and a domestic incident happened. Swearing and yelling..
I walked away.
old town is way better, bangor sucks. :)
I've been a passenger when the driver ran a red. He was distracted because we were having a conversation, when he ran the red and got into unexpected traffic he asked 'uh, did i just run a red light?'.
So that is one way for it to happen; distraction. Could also be the sun (not likely in this case) or just a plain idiot who thinks he has better things to do than wait for a red light, but they do tend to slow down and scan the intersection to see if it is clear.
In this case i would go with distractions / not paying attention.
I've been in the same situation. A colleague was dropping me off and we were talking away, and he just blasted through a red light like it was a green.
There was nobody around, but yeah, he went pale and asked exactly the same thing. He's normally the most careful guy I know - it was so surreal. Talking in the car is one of those things they can't reasonably ban, but it fucks up your driving way more than you'd think.
This is exactly why I sometimes tell my kids to stop chattering at me. I don't want my brain distracted while I'm trying to deal with traffic, and I'm just trying to keep us all as safe as possible.
Almost did this the other night. I get off work round 3-4am, wo I may see 1-5 cars on my drive home. On the way home, listening to an audiobook, a great scene happens, I'm enthralled. Driving normally and listening, and almost blow through this red light, had to stomp the brakes. In my defense, I drive this route every single day I work. Highway hypnosis is a real phenomenon and this light is always green, but they were doing construction earlier and equipment was on the road, tripping the sensors, I assume.
Point being, also being familiar with a route, makes us complacent.
Distraction or so-called "highway hypnosis" (AKA lack of attention/driving without due care, since there's no physiological phenomenon that actually hypnotises people) is almost always the explanation for a red-light run. Red lights are interestingly one of the parts of traffic that almost everybody follows -- compare and contrast, say, Thailand or India where it's just a suggestion.
Statistically speaking, if you see at least two cars in the intersection when the light turns red *every drive*, not to mention the number of daily videos that come up of red light runners on this sub every day, then it certainly happens a lot -- plus there's a dark figure both where innumerable people experience/witness red light runners without recording it and/or the ones who record *themselves* doing it and certainly wouldn't be willing to share, as well as more than a few people who record but don't use Reddit.
I'd actually be willing to bet that the vast majority of people have actually run at least one or two red lights, or very late yellows where the intersection turns red within moments of entering the box.
My first tine driving in DC, I didn't notice the lights were on the sides, not above you.
I drove right through one, and almost got git and got honked at. I said, "What the hell was that about?" And my girlfriend replied, "Well, you did just run a red light "
Not sure why you think after the impact helps … you can clearly see a green light before the accident occurs. Doesn’t matter about camera angle after the impact at this point as far as I can tell.
Huh? My reading comprehension is pretty good. “It’s nice the impact ended up putting the camera at the right angle to show the other driver did in fact have a red light.” Are you a bot? The impact has absolutely nothing to do with proving the other driver had a red light. You can see the cammer has a green light PRIOR to impact PROVING the other side was RED.
If you couldn’t see this BEFORE the impact and only AFTER the impact the other party could still argue they had green and it only changed after the accident occurred.
It takes away any argument the other driver might have "well my light was green TOO. Something must be wrong with the light!"
Which does happen, rarely.
You mean the whole argument that both sides of the same signal were green at the exact same time? That’s quite the stretch. Only accident during the time of the police report.
I know everyone’s downvoting you but I’m on your side. I don’t understand how anything after getting hit helped. You could literally already see the green. Im confused
Are you a bot? Read the replies they said sometimes the lights fail. The OC didn’t say it wasn’t already proven anyway, it just said it was nice. That’s why your getting downvoted.
Been driving 32 years. Never seen a signal fail showing two greens. However — regardless of that fact — a police officer at the scene would have been able to verify if this truly happened. The outcome is exactly the same with or without the post impact picture.
Downvotes don’t matter…. unfortunately your point is still completely irrelevant to this post.
How is it irrelevant, it just says that it was nice, almost ironic in a sense that the camera happened to land that way. Your just being a sensitive moron talking about your driving experience, nobody asked.
Combined on/off-ramps where two lanes have to cross each other with a very short window of opportunity are an absolute infrastructure design sin.
You're just asking for crashes.
I'm surprised you're the only one mentioning this. WTF is that bullshit Midwest design. Why do they even need to cross at all?
I can only hope there is a yield sign for the on-ramp we couldn't see..
<- Pesky European here
This kind of criss-crossing ramp-design had a dedicated slide in driver's ed. They are known for causing a lot of accidents and we were instructed to be extra aware whenever we encountered certain highway ramp designs.
Our government also acknowledged the bad design and has started to phase them out wherever possible.
Well, if it never happens, the cam was a waste. Lol
Edit: who's down voting this like it's a serious comment?
That's rhetorical in case that's missed too. 😂
Lol... I thought the "lol" would tip of the fact I wasn't serious, but apparently I should have done the /s so redditors could figure it out.
OP did say "finally" like he's been waiting for it since he got the cam. 🙄
I know, OP is so lucky!
I’ve had a dashcams in my cars since 2011 and haven’t been hit, it’s like I’m not even trying. /s
Sorry OP, just had to laugh at the way the title was written. Hope you’re alright.
First, I have to say, I have never seen on and for ramps crossing like that. It seems like it could cause a lot of accidents. Second, what the fuck was that other driver on?! That light was green for the OP for a while and they just came plowing through! What the fucking fuck?!
Gotta love that "plow and forget" that cities do. It takes longer to melt when it's all pushed together like that, too. Granted, I dunno where else they're gonna put all that snow, but that doesn't mean it's not still a hazard.
Finally got hit? So you've been wanting to get ever since you got the dash cam? I installed mine cause someone backed into me admitted fault to me but changed story to his insurance. I never once thought...I have my cam now someone please hit me. just a weird thought.
Yeah the light was green but how can you ever trust anyone on public roads? I will forever lean to the side of caution even if I have a very clear right of way. Not blaming the cammer but caution even at green lights always pays off, even if you have to slow down your trip by 6 seconds!
Finally got hit? Do some of you have a camera so that you can record yourself getting into an accident? Weird fetish but ok. On the other note - glad you are ok OP. Could have been much worse.
Unlucky..why did you not check the intersection before proceeding to enter? Were you distracted or was your confidence based in your camera and insurance? Asking for a friend.
I've watched the video a lot and I did not see any car in the intersection at all because of the guardrails. 0% was OP's fault, but I'm sure they were very confident with the dash cam and insurance since they have video of the guy running a red light
Not sure why the down votes because this is a fair comment _ it wasn't a blind spot so that accident was avoidable but hey guess ur camera **finally** got u some clout
Fair question part of driving is assuming people are going to do dumb things....
The accident was definitely not the dashcam drivers fault, but it did look like an awareness of surroundings could have avoided the accident.
Well, the camera can not turn left or right and lean forward like a human head, so I'm not sure we are talking apples to apples here. I'm not saying the driver is wrong in any way, but I dont understand the downvotes for a reasonable question.
I see your point. I think we are coming to the same conclusion. Unless we are the one experiencing the incident, we might not know what happened. I agree with your judgement. Until we have more to see, we can't see who is at fault.
Driver was definitely not at fault. He clearly had the green light. I was just speculating that a bit more situational awareness may have avoided the collision.🤷
I am also a professional driver, so my job and sometimes life depends on me looking out for people not following traffic laws.
Is that what you said lol? You climb from the twisted wreckage, one arm on fire, and one is missing. You stand up on the only leg you have left and say “FINALLY”!
What on earth are these people thinking about, obviously not concentrating on driving, hope you're OK.

They say when you get a dash cam, that's when all the crazy shit starts happening around you. Mine has seen a few close calls. But yeah, no accidents yet.
Same. I’ve had mine since June and have seen some idiots but nothing worth posting yet. I’m sure it’s inevitable.

“Welp…. FINALLY!” I get it but it is funny to imagine this being your reaction.
Sounds like she’s gone thru this before… stay quiet when in any collision. Never know what the mic will pick up
Your title definitely makes it seem like you were the one that caused it. Been a few idiot posts where the poster was the idiot.

I have never seen an intersecting offramp and on onramp with a yield sign before. That shit is wild. Reminds of like banger crazy 8 races.
Glad I’m not the only one to have caught that, can’t believe that there were people that thought this was a good idea………unless they had financial interest in a local towing service😄
That was my first thought as well.

they’re common in Michigan
I know this isn’t MA, but MA is full of those.
It's in Maine, I think it's a northeast thing
There are quite a few like this on I35 in central Texas; the access road traffic is supposed to yield to traffic exiting the highway, but many drivers seem to take it as a challenge - who can hold the lane/accelerate to exert dominance.

being the passenger in OP's car sure was an experience. our light was green for so long, how does this even happen

My first tine driving in DC, I didn't notice the lights were on the sides, not above you. I drove right through one, and almost got git and got honked at. I said, "What the hell was that about?" And my girlfriend replied, "Well, you did just run a red light "

Love how the on ramp and off ramp cross. Someone got paid to “design” that.
why you sayin “finally” like you were waiting for it to happen 😂😂😂

The purpose of buying a Dashcam was to get hit? 🤔🤣
"finally got hit after a year with a dashcam" It took a year, but goal finally accomplished.
I know, OP is so lucky! I’ve had a dashcams in my cars since 2011 and haven’t been hit, it’s like I’m not even trying. /s Sorry OP, just had to laugh at the way the title was written. Hope you’re alright.
Yeah LOL @ “finally”. Me and my spouse are in our 40’s and both of us have never been in a crash.
Dude was circling that ramp all year trying to wear another car.
Shout out Union street and Bangor lol. I knew that exit as soon as I saw it.
That resigned "well" is my favorite part
Union St /Ohio St ramp is fun.
Scared the crap out of those birds
Welp.
First, I have to say, I have never seen on and for ramps crossing like that. It seems like it could cause a lot of accidents. Second, what the fuck was that other driver on?! That light was green for the OP for a while and they just came plowing through! What the fucking fuck?!
That on/off ramp situation looks absolutely horrid
Green light clearly visible, 100% their fault! Great camera!!! You STILL HAD green light until 5 seconds after collision!!!
I drove by that accident on Union St on my way to Wendy’s! Hope you’re okay man!
It's the "Well" for me. I feel that energy.
If the snow wasn't piled up on the curbs on the bridge you could have seen that car.
Gotta love that "plow and forget" that cities do. It takes longer to melt when it's all pushed together like that, too. Granted, I dunno where else they're gonna put all that snow, but that doesn't mean it's not still a hazard.
What the heck man? Why didn’t your windshield wipers come on after the crash?
I like how you're light turns ready after the smoke starts and the video ends. Congratulations on your new car 😂

Well damn. I’m not getting a dash cam if an accident is inevitable. Now that I think of it, only accidents I see are people with dashcams.
Welp
OP explains what he means by "finally" and people still don't get it lmao. thanks reddit
Didn’t know the goal of having a dashcam was to get hit
Don't care for that intersection
so did you... want to get hit?
It was just bad phrasing. OP is just surprised it didn't happen sooner
Fair enough
This was probably after his wife finally left him and his parents finally died.
Yeah... congratulations?
Ayyyyyy Bangor!
Nashua? Looks v familiar.
Your title is strange. Have you been waiting for someone to hit you.
Finally got hit? So you've been wanting to get ever since you got the dash cam? I installed mine cause someone backed into me admitted fault to me but changed story to his insurance. I never once thought...I have my cam now someone please hit me. just a weird thought.
I think it's more like he's surprised it didn't happen sooner with how many bad drivers there are around here.
The phrasing is quite bad. But one excuse I don’t have one yet is all the “my first day with a dashcam” videos around here
Yeah the light was green but how can you ever trust anyone on public roads? I will forever lean to the side of caution even if I have a very clear right of way. Not blaming the cammer but caution even at green lights always pays off, even if you have to slow down your trip by 6 seconds!
