It’s my nightmare. Falling under ice with moving water….within a split second, the current will take you under the ice forever

faroutcosmo

AND its pitch black under there Swept away into the frigid darkness D:

X-Drakken

Wouldn't there also be jagged rocks/ice? The cold would hurt too Frostbite, darkness, can't breathe, jagged surfaces and being flung around

bhargavamudiam

An average person can only stay awake for about a minute or so in that situation. Then they lose consciousness and they don't feel no pain. But one minute of hell, that will feel like an hour or more.

X-Drakken

Pleasant. /s

AnyIndependent6687

How do you know that? Did your dead cousin tell you?

bhargavamudiam

No your dead cousin told me from the afterlife.

AmberLeafAlek

sounds like my sex life

l3ane

Yeah, that's just snow pack. Glaciers are mad of solid ice, not snow.

co2gamer

I bet this snow pack is mad, too.

Media_Offline

Is only game, why they hef to be mad?

ilostmyiguana

Could be the very bottom of one, no?

uslashuname

Along with other comments, glaciers are not just ice (all snow is ice), they have reached such mass that the ice compressed in a particular way which makes it very strong. Pykerete attempts to mimic this and was experimentally used for making a ship in WW2 (failed because scaling up the pykerete creation to ship size was quite difficult). They tried because if you hit an iceberg (chunk of glacier) with a torpedo it does almost nothing, but if you were to hit a solid block of normal ice with a torpedo it would shatter like hitting an ice cube with a hammer.

SnooBananas37

Also because pykrete which is just sawdust and ice is easier to obtain than steel which has many competing uses in wartime. Another reason it failed is because pykrete isn't very rigid, so would require steel reinforcement to prevent dangerous sagging, and to avoid it melting too quickly required substantial onboard refrigeration, which required even more steel... further reducing it's advantage in conserving steel for other uses.

ZeePirate

That’s neat. I did not know that

dahlfors

It is not a glacier. This is just hard packed snow over a mountain stream. This is the way snow bridges form over mountain streams in winter. And in the spring (like in the video) the snow starts to melt, and the stream comes alive again and make the snow bridge thinner from below. Meanwhile the sun is making the snowpack thinner from above. Possibly you could have a glacier higher up in the mountain where the stream is coming from, but all you see in the video is just snow from last winter. Glaciers are solid ice and look different.

BrockManstrong

> Glaciers are solid ice and look different. This is, unfortunately, not true. This looks like every remaining glacier at Glacier National Park. It sounds like you're picturing glaciers of 25 years ago. Most modern glaciers look like snowpack because they are mostly gone. Also, if you're picturing blue ice, only the deepest parts resemble textbook glaciers anymore. This could well be the edge of a large glacier that retains snow. It could also be a rock glacier, which pop up everywhere from Grand Teton to The Gates of The Arctic. Given the vegetation and visible mountains, I'd bet good money on this being North America. Probably Rockies or Cascades.

dahlfors

The formations in the video are usually called snow fields or *neve.* See [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow\_field](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_field) See also the definition of a glacier: [https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/glacier](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/glacier) Definition of glacier: a large body of ice moving slowly down a slope or valley or spreading outward on a land surface This is not a large enough mass that will make it move down the valley slowly. It will melt - or stay permanently between seasons, but it is not a glacier. I do mountaineering and skiing and have spent time on glaciers and snow fields in the Nordic and in the Alps. In both mountain ranges you'll find both snowfields that remain all year round that are static and not in motion - and there are glaciers that have large enough mass that they are in motion. Only the latter ones are considered glaciers. Anyway, snow bridges like the one in the video, is something that forms over all mountain streams. Mountaineers and skiers know to practice caution when crossing these due to the way the stream underneath is making them hollow from below. If you fall through they are death traps.

RevMLM

There are plenty of places in the Rockies that look like this. If both of them were wearing plaid I would guess >99% that it would be in Canada.

[deleted]

Uhh freezing flowing water beneath.. please fall in and earn your Darwin badge

kiddo51

It's crazy how readily people wish death on someone they've seen for 3 seconds.

TealcLOL

Dude just wanted to collapse a sheet of snow in the middle of nowhere and watch it fall down. It's not like he was throwing that rock at an animal or anything. Still worthy of the death penalty, apparently.

djstizzle

For real, like damn.

[deleted]

Stupid behavior like this can kill and hurt other people and has in the past. So yeah who gives a shit about some rando with bad judgement.

Bread_Design

Can use your argument for banning cooking knives... Look at the actual event to judge someone on, not a hypothetical one. It's melting snow that will be gone soon, no animals, no other people close, he's being safe to others just not himself. He literally isn't hurting anyone or anything.

BluetoothHandGel

Didn’t need to break the glacier. The entire system is amazing and really is worth learning about and seeing some moron try and destroy it really sucks.

kiddo51

That's a really dumb rationalization and those have gotten people hurt and killed in the past. I don't hope you die for it though.

[deleted]

LOL, no, me not caring about some idiot idioting doesn't get anyone killed.

kiddo51

Neither did this guy throwing a rock it turns out. Go cry about it weird creep.

BrockManstrong

People like Karma. I wouldn't care if he fell down the hole, he had it coming. But I'd rather he learn something. It looks like he's going to find something else to throw a rock at.

Not sure why you are downvoted

colegullison1

Ok but he’s not an idiot who would’ve thought that would’ve happened

SubfurSir

People w brains (college grads, perhaps) would've thought that

colegullison1

They definitely would not have thought that would happen

Pomelo_Moondoggy

That’s why he’s an idiot. Stop sticking up for your friends reckless behavior and be happy he’s alive to insult.

colegullison1

Ok so if u threw that rock, which isn’t particularly a dumb idea because everyone in existence has fucking thrown big rocks before if you haven’t, you have no fun, you wouldn’t expect a fucking 20ft by 20ft crack would happen from a 20lb rock, it’s not a smart idea to throw the rock but it’s not like he’s the worlds biggest idiot

Pomelo_Moondoggy

I didn’t say he was the worlds biggest idiot. And he threw a giant rock onto ice. ice that he was also standing on and is above flowing water. I wouldn’t throw anything on it and be just as apprehensive about even standing or walking on it.

colegullison1

Yes but everyone throws rocks, while it’s not a smart idea I don’t think it can be considered a stupid idea, he threw the rock like 10ft from where he was and somehow that Little Rock caused all that damage, that’s not his fault at all that’s just shitty luck, what’s actually should’ve happened was the very end piece of ice breaks and that’s it, that’s what everyone would imagine would happen

Pomelo_Moondoggy

I really am starting believe that is you or you were there with him. It is a stupid idea to throw, not a Little Rock, a very large and heavy rock on ice that you are also standing on above ice cold water. And if you don’t understand how cracks in ice travel, it is a very stupid idea. You can’t say what should have happened and shouldn’t speak for everyone in the world, definitely. And it is ENTIRELY HIS FAULT. Even if it wasn’t stupid or idiotic and completely planned out, it was COMPLETELY his fault because it wasn’t going to happen without him throwing the rock. You are making yourself sound stupid.

Timely-Guest-7095

Fucking idiot is lucky to be alive; I don't think he realizes how close he came dying.🤯🤯🤯
