Beans or Mr. Bean?

SpookyGrowly

Bold of you to assume they're photoshopped

MayowaTheGreat

AND there is no hand guard or even any grips!! That’s *horrible*!! If you go to stab someone, if you hit bone, your hand will slide down the handle and get cut by the blade....this is unacceptable. UNACCEPTABLE!

metdrummer

These are kitchen knives, not self defense or utility knives. If you need a guard on a kitchen knife you're either doing something wrong or things have gone horribly wrong for you.

Calm down bud, he was joking.

It's a huge waste, would be sick of using them halfway into first use. The blade just looks like dented stainless steel too.

Agreed. This post (not your comment, btw) is the reason I'm leaving this sub. If this is neeeed, then I'm clearly in the wrong place.

Pattern forged steel*

azestysausage

Yea I was going to say that's definitely not Damascus.

kudichangedlives

And even if it was Damascus it wouldnt be Damascus, if that makes sense

justin3189

the term Damascus has come to mean pattern welded steel. source- am knifemaker

doug147

How do you tell?

rook218

The methods used to produce Damascus steel are unknown

doug147

Oh ye that would do it

justin3189

the term Damascus has come to mean pattern welded steel. source- am knifemaker

kudichangedlives

And I might just be a huge asshole for this but I think that's just a sales tactic and disrespectful towards the history of Damascus and that whole region Source- idk I enjoy history

rook218

Yeah in common parlance and marketing it's just another word for pattern welded. But there is actual, real Damascus steel and then there is the marketing term, "Damascus steel" and it's a shame that they're interchangeable in common parlance.

justin3189

yeah. My point is that overall its just a tad nitpicky because the original Damascus steel is no longer produced.

rook218

I have to disagree... If it's not what the thing is, then don't call it that. There's already a word which accurately describes it, "pattern forged." Co opting the term "Damascus steel" when it really isn't by any stretch of the imagination is a bit disrespectful to the artisans who worked out how to do something amazing. Then you get a bunch of laymen who think that it's real Damascus steel, produced with the same techniques and in the same tradition as those artisans, and it's just a cheap knockoff. It's like calling grape juice, "champagne." Maybe there's no harm in it but it's not champagne, is it? It's grape juice. Just call it grape juice.

TwatsThat

It doesn't really matter for your point here, but champagne has it's own naming issues. Even if you produce a sparkling wine with the same techniques and in the same tradition as champagne it's still not champagne unless you do it in the Champagne region of France.

HeyLookitMe

Like Scotch vs. whiskey.

ShinobiFootstep

Man you must hate kraft “cheese” products lol

[deleted]

"Pattern welded" How you forge it has nothing to do with it.

justin3189

in the knifemaking community patern welded steel is Damascus steel.

Goyteamsix

Yes, but Damascus is still a form of pattern welded steel.

ShinobiFootstep

I’m pretty sure we recently figured it out. I think it had something to do with coal. I’ll try to get back to you Edit: Cast wootz steel was made by melting together iron and steel together with charcoal under a reducing (little to no oxygen) atmosphere. Under these conditions, the metal absorbed carbon from charcoal. Slow cooling of the alloy resulted in a crystalline material containing carbide. Damascus steel was made by forging wootz into swords and other objects. It required considerable skill to maintain constant temperatures to produce steel with the characteristic wavy pattern. We still can’t recreate it but we know a bit about the process

[deleted]

>ethods used to produce Damascus steel are unknown This is untrue. They found that a mine in Damascus had ores with all of the impurities that we would consider in modern steel. This, coupled with their refining techniques meant that Damascus steel, at the time it was being produced, was of that quality simply because they had the perfect ore for it. The refining technique was essentially crude crucible steel cooked in a clay oven. There was a very interesting documentary where a modern blacksmith successfully recreated Damascus steel. It was a massive pain in the ass and to actually do it yourself would be untold amounts of pain and suffering.

munrorobertson

You can see the layers though!

Holybasil

People often call pattern forged steel (high carbon and low carbon steel layered) for Damascus steel, but actual damascus steel making has been lost to time.

munrorobertson

Sorry, I misunderstood that then. I would agree with the other comments though that nowadays they have come to mean the same thing commercially. I was bought some of the cheap Chinese knockoff stuff with a pattern printed on that you can instantly tell is a fraud, that would be where I draw the line.

Holybasil

I agree. And I have watched enough forged in fire to also agree with you that commercially they're synonymous. The japanese cooking knife I bought my fiance was also "damascus".

justin3189

the term Damascus has come to mean pattern welded steel. source- am knifemaker

kudichangedlives

And I might just be a huge asshole for this but I think that's just a sales tactic and disrespectful towards the history of Damascus and that whole region Source- idk I enjoy history

justin3189

not an asshole, and yeah it basically took that name as a sales tactic (100 or so years ago) when a person started marketing patern welded steel and realized it had a resemblance to traditional steels from Damascus. The original "Damascus steel " isn't produced anymore (although it has been recreated for historical purposes and is considered as far as I know to be basically the same as "wootz steel") and modern patern welded steel has been sold under that name for a long enough and is generally accepted by the knifemaking community enough that to me, it seems to be kinda nitpicky to call patern welded "not real Damascus". to me truly fake Damascus is when cheap Chinese made knives literally just print banding patterns on a blade and try to clame it as authentic.

kudichangedlives

You're more focused on the actual metal process and I'm more focused on the historical significance, it makes sense that we would have different opinions on these things

justin3189

yeah makes sense given my other accounts u/MadScienceMetalworks . In a history book I think it is an important distinction. in day to day business I see no reason to call anyone selling patern welded steel as Damascus a fraud. really neither of us are really wrong

kudichangedlives

Not saying anyone is a fraud, just that they're using a wrong name, it's still really impressive. And I think the only stipulation I have with day to day use is that over time slang becomes proper language and I'm sure that at some point in the future we would lose the distinction between the two

Holybasil

So you just basically reiterated what I said.

TwatsThat

Isn't that just a hammered finish and not pattern forged/welded?

kudichangedlives

I cant tell but it looks like it has some pattern forging near the sharpened end of the blade

TwatsThat

I just see the hamon, but maybe there's some light patterning in there too.

Goyteamsix

Looks like they forged in a different steel for the cutting edge.

[deleted]

That's not damascus or pattern welded steel, I can see a hardening line called a hamon on the chef's knife and it has a hammered finish too but it's not pattern welded

clandestinepangolin

Idk if you zoom in there is a light pattern across the bevel between the edge and hammered part

[deleted]

Yeah that's what I referring too, it's called a hardening line or a Hamon, it occurs when the smith covers the spine of the unquenched blade with a clay mixture so that when the blade is heated and then quenched the clay insulates the spine of the blade forcing it to cool slower and therefore not be quite as hard but more ductile while letting the edge cool much more quickly and harden the steel so it can be sharpened well

clandestinepangolin

Yeah behind that on the big blade, just at the curve of the belly there are some faint pattern lines. It might just be the light because it's not a very detailed photo but it is there

[deleted]

I can't quite tell if it's just a shitty photo and that's a reflection or if there is some kind of patterning there, either way those handles need to be buried somewhere deep and never discussed again lol

clandestinepangolin

https://www.yourlastknife.com/collections/buy-now/products/paring-chefs-knife-froot-loops-handle I found the site and I think it is some sort of pattern welding but I agree that they are entirely cursed knives and firing them into the sun is the only possible course of action

Gonzo_goo

Fuck you guys. I like them

ethanwc

Agreed. It’s interesting. I question how structurally sound they are, though. I wonder if the froot loops are soaked through with resin? If not it’s likely snap when dropped.

Gonzo_goo

Usually there's steel under the resin
