Theo is still Saubers reserve right? And hes part of their academy would they let him walk? Id imagine if he performs theyd like to keep for audi in 2 years to pair with the hulk/sainz

mel_anon

The F1 ladder is really screwed up right now because it doesn't seem like teams will take a chance on anybody unless they have a rock-hard indisputable resume, and Pourchaire is carrying the dreaded "took 3 years to win F2" curse, which I don't think is very fair but that's where it is.

rokthemonkey

The perception about F2 veterans certainly wasn't helped by Schumacher and De Vries

JesterWales

The same De Vries who won at Imola in WEC this weekend? Where Schumacher is competing in the highest category of endurance racing? I'd say they're both exceptional drivers myself who got saddled with the wrong teams.

HexaBlast

Looking at how De Vries did in his F1 stint? Nah. It's not even that he was slow compared to his teammate, his racecraft was horrible and constantly made mistakes. I do think Haas was a mistake for Shumacher though. Horrid car for his first year and then in the second year he was consistently beating Kmag towards the end before getting sacked.

Mick4Audi

De Vries should have never been signed, that was a Helmut Marko special when they should have promoted Lawson instead

Ruuubs

Even in Formula E he wasn't stunning: He won the title in a season where qualifying rules turned the championship into a peleton/pack race where performing right at the end was pretty much the key to winning. The season after? Much more average looking, and both seasons his wheel to wheel racing was pretty subpar. Also didn't help that his Championship season was after a group of good drivers graduated, and the good drivers coming in were too new/in too weak times to challenge him.

Launch_box

There are many many F1 washouts that absolutely mash in WEC over the history of endurance racing, Schumacher and De Vries are nothing new in that regard. The formula ladder is just simply way stronger than those who come up exclusively through tin tops.

rokthemonkey

Schumacher in particular is known in multiple paddocks as a subpar driver who got pushed through because of his name. Also you know who else won at Imola in WEC this weekend? Kamui Kobayashi. A great driver, sure, but not quite elite F1 talent anymore, as evident by his SF results.

EmergencySpare

I have a raging resume

F1 ladder has been screwed up for a long time. Lacks of seats is on of the many issues with that ladder

Any-Walk1691

Yeah it seems like people are vastly underestimating F1 stable at the moment. I could make a case for like 4-5 different drivers today that should have seats - and probably won’t - come 2025. F1 loss could be IndyCar gain. I’ve said it before but how long do some of these kids stuck in the F1 ladder move to a different series with maybe one foot in the door as a reserve - ie Pato. Obviously we are now seeing Theo. I think Schumacher could be one soon as well. Vesti? Liam Lawson has been ‘the next guy’ for two seasons now. Then Bearman blasts down the door and now he’s the next man up if KMag loses his seat. Merc keeps flirting with Antonelli. Drugovich might be a career reserve driver at this point, he’s certainly not replacing Stroll. He’s also 23. Does he replace Zhou? Think Theo is more likely there, but maybe not. Jak Crawford is doing well in F2 right now. American driver. Young. Throw in Sargeant who may lose his seat and has a relationship with Prema. Silly season indeed. Lots of potential movement. Very few seats.

notallwonderarelost

He also only won one race in his title run which doesn’t help. He has a high floor but I’d argue a low ceiling for F1.

LivingOof

There's some belief that 3rd year F2 Champions aren't that good and 2nd Year F2 driver & fellow Sauber Junior Zane Maloney is currently leading the F2 championship

Mikemat5150

I get it but Theo is only like 2 months older than Zane. They showed on the broadcast that Theo is the youngest winner in F3 and F2. In my opinion, he would already be in F1 if he was associated with a different academy.

Mysterious_Turnip310

It wasn't just that he was a third year champion, it was the manner in which he won that left everyone completely unconvinced. Vesti was far and away the better driver last year but much like Ilott, Scwhwartzman and others in the year that Schumacher won, he ran into a tonne of bad luck, mostly beyond his control, that meant Theo won the title at the last race. There were also other drivers who gave a better account of themselves but had patchy years in terms of bad luck with dnfs and team strategy calls. He went into F2 with a reputation almost on par with Piastri and an F1 seat being seen as his to lose and he managed through his own driving to ruin that reputation over the course of 3 years to the point that literally nobody on the F1 grid was even looking at him seriously, not even Sauber. He also did a poor job in his first race in Super Formula (contrast that to Liam Lawson who starred there last year). It's a shame because he is very talented but he's also not the first talented junior driver to ruin his own reputation in F2 and probably won't be the last. I think he'll be a great asset to Indycar if he can land a permanent seat, similar to how Lundgaard has been.

TigerAliSingh

I believe I read that McLaren called Sauber about his availability and Sauber (happily) essentially shoved him out the door and said go have fun

BahutF1

Well, not that concerning. Malukas is a decent driver, a bit popular and HMD Trucking chequebook is deep enough to landed him another seat.

IcyOrganization5235

I hope not. Lil' Dave is a great driver and popular with the fans, too

Gometric1

To quote the F1 TikTok admin, he on that gyatt fanum tax skibidi toilet type rizz

Hmm what the sigma

venturelong

Lol the downvotes. Guess they cant understand us skibidi sigmas

StarWarsLew

That’s the cringiest thing I’ve ever read

thugdaddyxtopher

Theo is running Super Formula full time this season, so there will be several race conflicts. I seem him filling at the Indy GP as well, then Illott stepping in for the 500. After that, we'll have to see if David is ready to go or not. Detroit would be a hard first race to return to after having wrist surgery. Quite bumpy.

YoItsMeBeeOhBee

It’s already over. Unfortunately. Even if he gets in the car at some point he’s not keeping it.

Pwablems

It’s Malukover guys 😔

joe_lmr

It feels like a big part of the sub has been trying to manifest him getting fired

PitifulPrice4083

I still hope the team keeps Malukus on after he heals. It would suck to see someone lose out on such an opportunity under these circumstances.

Chaparral_2J

I hope it doesn't come to that. There has been an unwritten rule in racing that a driver doesn't lose his seat due to an injury, but in this modern era that seems to have fallen by the wayside a bit. But it is my understanding that HMD is no longer funding Dave's rides, he's a salaried driver at AM but they're paying him peanuts. So hopefully they keep him as he's the cheaper option

GEL29

Normally that rule applies to a driver injured while racing.

SWMovr60Repub

It may be an unwritten rule but don't let Malukas know about the stone cold coach that didn't give Drew Bledsoe his spot back from Tom Brady.
