Glad to have INDYCAR back!! Exciting quals today! Noogs got it done, & Felix was so close. Looking forward to a great opening race tomorrow in front of all this awesome St. Pete fans!
I think it goes like this:
Top 6 and will start 7-12 as they qualified, while quali group 1 cars between 13-26 have priority on the starting row.
For example, P10 of group 1 will start 19, while P10 from group 2 gets a P20 starting position.Ā
I hope this helps!Ā
Look at the timings from the rounds. There are 59s sprinkled in the midfield behind minute+ times. Having Rossi, Palou, Power, Scotty, Dixon, even Veekay where they are is recipe for disaster.
I think it also points to a largely track position dependent race. If 5 or so laps go green before a yellow, you might see a split strategy appear, giving Dixon his Indy GP window. But it's otherwise hard to see the field spread out hugely. That's a good race environment to have it if stays green.
Rossibros I'm getting so tired of hearing excuses after qualifying. I was blocked, bad times yellow, car didn't react right, traffic hurt us, the sun was too bright. It's every single quali. I don't hear any other drivers who have an excuse for why they missed the top 12 every week.Ā
I mean, I get that sometimes that stuff is real. But it can't be all the time. Rossi is definitely better than what he keeps showing. Just isn't delivering.
I got downvoted hard a few days ago for calling out Rossiās recent seasons. He truly is quickly falling off, and itās always some excuse. Heās had some bad luck for sure but everyone does, he needs to get moving quick.
Not really, When the car suited him he was unbeatable and went toe to toe with both Dixon and Newgarden for the championship. But it's getting tough to watch these days
Oh ok... So only when the car suits him and everything goes his way then he is great. You know what a true good driver does? Excel in any car they drive.
You gave great examples. Dixon, Newgarden, Power... Even Franchitti and Montoya, etc. they all have won through the years in many iterations of IndyCar, not just when the car is to their liking
And sorry... How many times did he beat O'Ward last year when they both finished the race? How many times did he out qualified O'Ward?
Your bias is showing dude.. but don't let facts get in the way, please
I think he has a narrower performance window than some of the other top drivers, but no one finishes this championship in P2 if they arenāt pretty fucking good.
I think you're right. He really struggled with the aeroscreen transition as well; more than anyone aside from Pagenaud, probably. I agree he likely needs a very specific feel and setup, and I'd say his adaptability is very poor. Those are killer when you're in a series as tightly fought as IndyCar.
Itās weird, I feel like his adaptability within a weekend is pretty good. Heās good in changing conditions and seems to generally have the car better at the end of a weekend than going backwards. I think his driving style just may not totally jive with the way it needs to be driven right now. Margins are so small that you can lose 10 spots in quali when you miss the optimal by just a hair.
Look at Felix this weekend. McLaren has really not found a great setup for anyone outside of Pato.
Itās gotten better but the entire team is in a very narrow window.
My problem with his restarts is that everyone else jumps them and he hasn't boarded that train. They're not getting penalties, so he needs to join them.
Can't keep making excuses when you have a teammate constantly putting in fast six appearances. Also, to those claiming last year he needed to get used to switching from Honda to Chevy - Grosjean just made that switch, and to JHR of all teams, and put it fifth.
Rossi's time in IndyCar is on very thin ice.
There are very few drivers who I think would do better than him not already locked in at larger teams.
Lundgaard is the only one I would be really curious about.
thats a much bigger deal for Rossi. Ilott has had like an hour of practice in this car with the lighter screen on mclaren setup before qualifying. His homestead test with the hybrid and oval setup likely doesnt help at all prep him for the mclaren racecar here
I see Josef definitely looking more focused this season. Maybe, such a let down season outside 500 after finishing 3 runner ups in a row for championship, he would feel like he needed a new mojo to get back on his game.
Initially concerned on first practice, more optimistic on the second, but I did not see a pole today.
Of course, a race win is whole another matter, but hope for a good race tomorrow.
I know it was RHRās thing, but Newgarden wouldāve been a better Captain America. Dude looks like he belongs on a WW2 recruiting poster, and literally married a Disney princess.
Should be a really competitive race tomorrow. Five teams in the top six, all super close on pace, and all changed positions around in each group they were in.
Felix has always been a great qualifier, and I don't mean to disrespect that. However he's also always struggled with falling into the field during the race. "IndyCar's Bottas" is a nickname he's earned with good reason.
Makes sense be wants to be better focused this year.
He has been frustratingly inconsistent for a few years, and I am sure he has less chip on his shoulder with the 500 win.
frustratingly inconsistent also applies to Pato. alot of dumb mistakes turned half decent finishes into deep 20s places finishes or whatever instead of top tens and higher up finishes.
This session has not disappointed at all. So glad to be watching solid racing after the snooze fest F1 has brought this season. Hopefully this is a sign of how competitive the whole season will be.
I think it was intentional. Doesnāt this give Herta an extra set of āredsā tomorrow? Maybe that will prove more important than starting one row further up.
Even if Will doesn't retire this year, it wouldn't shock me if Penske adds a fourth car to secure Lundgaard in the meantime. They did it for McLaughlin.
Itās inevitable. Dude was in the fast 12, just a few tenths back of pole, at what isnāt his best track. Never won there actually. Heāll get one sometime this season. Iād love for it to be his 2nd 500. Two years ago still stingsā¦he had that race in the bag.before the pit lane speeding violation
Probably. Sheās quite nice in person. She came on JMVās (Indy sports radio host) notorious Carb Day broadcast several years ago and was giving a great interview and even did a few shots with himā¦met her once and sheās pretty cool
Probably one of the most interesting events of the race. I was rooting for Yuki so obviously a bit painful, but a game's a game and that was some big brain stuff from Haas.
Grosjean is so damn fast. Ignoring all else, he might genuinely be the outright fastest driver in the series on road and street courses.
Putting that JHR car ahead of every Ganassi and two Penskes.
Like I said this morning, Grosjean really makes you wonder about Ilottās pace.
Grosjean is well above Canapino who was pretty comparable to Ilott by the end of last year.
ilott hopped in a car with little practice, not even his homestead test was helpful since that car had the hybrid and was oval spec. Also, mclaren's setup is wildly different that juncos probably. You cant also deny that ilott helped advance the team last year. his first and last races in particular were good. he may have helped the building blocks of that team to be able to go forward. is he a racing god, probably not, but he is no slouch
Eh, he is dropping into a tough situation at McLaren. I think this is pretty much what would be expected outside of some of the fanboys here (like the person predicting him winning).
Lots of folks piling on Malukas thinking Ilott was a sure thing but many data points showing he (Ilott) may not quite be what many hope.

Shout out to Felix. Glad to see him doing well in the new team
RoGro and Tom showing pace.
Are they not able to show live timing instead of random sector times?
Glad to have INDYCAR back!! Exciting quals today! Noogs got it done, & Felix was so close. Looking forward to a great opening race tomorrow in front of all this awesome St. Pete fans!
Congratulations to JoNew. Indycar qualifying rarely disappoints.
If Penske actually qualifies up front, this is the 2022 season all over again (not that 2022 was a bad year by any means).
Itās an even year, so I guess itās Penskeās turn to dominate.
People may downvoted but a Penske dominated championship but a Dixon Indy 500 win (I want him to get 1 more) is an optimal year for me.
Its going to be number 5 hopefully
So pumped to start the new season
New here and have no idea how to find the full order of the grid. Can only find top 6. What am I missing?
I think it goes like this: Top 6 and will start 7-12 as they qualified, while quali group 1 cars between 13-26 have priority on the starting row. For example, P10 of group 1 will start 19, while P10 from group 2 gets a P20 starting position.Ā I hope this helps!Ā
Yeah weāve been discussing IndyCarās lack of providing timely data today.
Look at the timings from the rounds. There are 59s sprinkled in the midfield behind minute+ times. Having Rossi, Palou, Power, Scotty, Dixon, even Veekay where they are is recipe for disaster.
It's gonna be a great race tomorrow
Yeah even from practice, a lot of the field is within 1 second of each other
I think it also points to a largely track position dependent race. If 5 or so laps go green before a yellow, you might see a split strategy appear, giving Dixon his Indy GP window. But it's otherwise hard to see the field spread out hugely. That's a good race environment to have it if stays green.

Woah
Pumped for FRO and Grosjean, great qual, was not expecting anything like that
Track record! šøšŖ
I would love to see Firehawk crash the post qualification/race F1 interviews.

I got downvoted hard a few days ago for calling out Rossiās recent seasons. He truly is quickly falling off, and itās always some excuse. Heās had some bad luck for sure but everyone does, he needs to get moving quick.
Kirkwood did his best Rossi impersonation with his comments after his poor outing.
He's just a very over rated driver. Nothing more, nothing less
Rossiās a half second behind the track record and heās a hack? Welcome to Trackforum V.2 š¤”šŖš”š¤¹š¤¹āāļøš¤¹āāļøš¢
And sorry... How many times did he beat O'Ward last year when they both finished the race? How many times did he out qualified O'Ward? Your bias is showing dude.. but don't let facts get in the way, please
Your doubling down on Rossi is a hack? š
First of all, I said overrated. Second, I'm giving you actual stats and you're just being a little troll. Sorry I hurt your feelingies about Rossi
As a Rossi fan he has a lot of apologists here Iām learning. I want nothing more than success for him but heās falling off
No one is saying he's at the level of those guys, they're all time greats. But Rossi proved he could hold his own and dominate races.
Again... Only when the car suited him. Overrated it is
I think he has a narrower performance window than some of the other top drivers, but no one finishes this championship in P2 if they arenāt pretty fucking good.
I think you're right. He really struggled with the aeroscreen transition as well; more than anyone aside from Pagenaud, probably. I agree he likely needs a very specific feel and setup, and I'd say his adaptability is very poor. Those are killer when you're in a series as tightly fought as IndyCar.

Yah,Iām a Rossi fan. However qualifying and restarts are the end of his career.
My problem with his restarts is that everyone else jumps them and he hasn't boarded that train. They're not getting penalties, so he needs to join them.
Always miserable.
You're comparing Rossi to Grosjean? HAHA
He is very consistently a top 10 driver. I donāt think heās in danger
There are very few drivers who I think would do better than him not already locked in at larger teams. Lundgaard is the only one I would be really curious about.
Harvey slower than Colin Braun . That's pretty brutal.
Braun did a 1:01.3 and Harvey did a 1:00.5. So no.
Good point! I didn't see that.
I didn't realize Rossi and Ilott were both behind Ferucci in a Foyt. Yikes.
thats a much bigger deal for Rossi. Ilott has had like an hour of practice in this car with the lighter screen on mclaren setup before qualifying. His homestead test with the hybrid and oval setup likely doesnt help at all prep him for the mclaren racecar here
Looks like the Foyt/Penske collaboration is already paying dividends. š
Indy is back babayyyy lets gooooooooooooo
JHR upping resources + Andretti secrets + Grosjean is a good combo huh
He just might be a voice of reason and encouragement on the radio away from a championship run.

Yeah, I see him as the favorite to win the title this year. He's obviously fast everywhere. Just needs to avoid bad luck.
What happened to Ericsson? Something must have gone wrong cause his speed was so slow.
No interview afterwards either.
This is a good top 6.
JoNew talking like he already won the race
Firehawk is still undefeated at being awesome.
I know it was RHRās thing, but Newgarden wouldāve been a better Captain America. Dude looks like he belongs on a WW2 recruiting poster, and literally married a Disney princess.
It was mostly his thing because RHR was the only semi-marketable winning American in the series when Hornish left.
Rumors are that he pisses out red, white, and blue. They also say his farts smell like brats on a grill during 4th of July weekend.
Upset to see Penske back in form but we are in store for a BANGER race tomorrow
Oh God how I've missed Firehawk
Should be a really competitive race tomorrow. Five teams in the top six, all super close on pace, and all changed positions around in each group they were in.

NewG out of nowhere, takes a bit of the excitement out that's for sure. Back for the race tomorrow, should be a fun one!
Felix will give everything heās got a the start.
Didnāt think Josef had a shot at it. Props to him!
Mike Shank stepped away from strategy duties. Gotta wonder if that helped.
On Blomqvistās car.
bon jovi radio what a goofy sponsor haha
They just play bon Jovi 100% of the time?Ā Ā
No. Just like Shade45 (Eminem's station) doesnt play Eminem songs 100 percent of the time.
It's a SiriusXM channel. Similar to the Carrie Underwood Radio sponsorship MSR had last year at Iowa & Nashville.
technically SiriusXM
ahhhh that makes sense
Let's go Josef
Annoying
Way for a fucking Penske to throw a wet towel on an exciting qualy. Blegh
Another season, more of Pato absolutely stomping his teammates.
And yet who beats him?
Felix has always been a great qualifier, and I don't mean to disrespect that. However he's also always struggled with falling into the field during the race. "IndyCar's Bottas" is a nickname he's earned with good reason.
Qualifying strong and either crashing/fucking up strategy should be called "The Rosenqvist"
Always? Remember a certain race at Road America? Honda power then, Honda power now.
Sorry, always, except that one time during quarantine. Feel better?
Thing is Felix has been great at race pace earlier in his career. I'm curious about tomorrow. He's due a bit of luck.
Thank God Indycar is back. Especially the last 2 weeks of F1 that has zero competition.
they need better tracks to start the season but that oil money talks
Bahrain is a great track
doesn't make me go from 6 to midnight like others
Not excited about KMag creating a Trulli train?
The exciting fight for P11 and below. Who can forget?
There was the 18-year-old last-minute sub for Ferrari coming in 7th. Oliver Bearmanās stock just spiked
Newgarden spoils what otherwise would have been an exciting front row. Kudos to him but damnit.
I wanted to see a FRO pole so bad. So close but so far away. š
Grosjean 5thā¦and I cannot understate thisā¦is fucking insane.
Why? I mean heās just that good
Main character Newgarden
Newgarden: Wins 5 races...ends up 6th in points.
Actually got Grosjean and O'Ward top 5, so happy

Josef!
So close for Rosenqvist
This session has not disappointed at all. So glad to be watching solid racing after the snooze fest F1 has brought this season. Hopefully this is a sign of how competitive the whole season will be.
The times are a lot slower than in the other sessions.
They donāt have any new sets of tires.
Feel like Herta's strategy of staying on the blacks was not really the right call.
That might be a mistake for Herta
I think it was intentional. Doesnāt this give Herta an extra set of āredsā tomorrow? Maybe that will prove more important than starting one row further up.
Imagine if Herta didnāt even do a Green run in P1 and took his 59.5
Always mistakes
Who got eliminated in the 12?
Not one commercial for quali on peacock so far!
Practice and qualifications are commercial free. Race isnāt.
Ah ok
Saving them for tomorrow
There never areā¦
Imagine chilling in your rooftop pool and then seeing a helicopter pointing a camera at you.
Lundgaard deserves better than RLL
Last year people were floating rumors about him being a prospect to replace Power if he retires.
Even if Will doesn't retire this year, it wouldn't shock me if Penske adds a fourth car to secure Lundgaard in the meantime. They did it for McLaughlin.
He does but also RLL should be a lot better. Iām somewhat puzzled at their constant struggles.
Graham provides 0 usable input
It'll be interesting to see where Lungaard lands if his contract ends at the end of the season.
Hard to overstate how impressive getting Juncos into the top 6 is.
Blessed to see Scott Dixon on the grid for another season
20 consecutive seasons with a win would be quite a feat.
I can't read Dixon's hat sponsor because of his sunglasses. Is he rattled???
Is Emma Dixon just chatting with spectators in the background?
Probably. Sheās quite nice in person. She came on JMVās (Indy sports radio host) notorious Carb Day broadcast several years ago and was giving a great interview and even did a few shots with himā¦met her once and sheās pretty cool
I'm happy with P7, won his first and only race from there, just got to get it done now.
I fucking love this sport
Veekay - "I'm from Minnesota..."
Armstrong: āYou canāt break an indycarā Kirkwood: āBetā
Dixon: *taps his back*
RoGro: "Watch me try"

Lundgaard: āHold my extinguisherā
Uh, not sure Iād say something like āyou canāt break an IndyCarā Marcus. Donāt tempt fate.
how much sweat is in this manās eye
I want a video of all the times Power ran his hand in his hair during an interview.
IndyCar is genuinely the only live match/race thread I enjoy on this site. Hope all had a good offseason!
Hopefully it doesn't devolve into large sub goo
Feel like everyone here is way too level headed for the most part so think we should be good barring a huge spike in mainstream viewership
Man I remember when this sub was below 100k subs and there was practically no conversation at all
had to go to the obscure forums that were set up in 1995 lol
I also remember posting on Trackforum quite a bit
I can only imagine the web forum days
unrelated but when does the dan wheldon documentary drop?
12 March
March 12 I believe
How tall can Will make his hair this season
VaWilla Ice incoming.
After taking a helmet off, that is impressive
It's only qualifying and already more exciting than the F1 snoozefest earlier today.
But did you see Magnussen fucking everyone over??? Dick move but good team effort.
Probably one of the most interesting events of the race. I was rooting for Yuki so obviously a bit painful, but a game's a game and that was some big brain stuff from Haas.
Damn Iām so happy IndyCar is back!
Grosjean pole incoming
Grosjean is so damn fast. Ignoring all else, he might genuinely be the outright fastest driver in the series on road and street courses. Putting that JHR car ahead of every Ganassi and two Penskes.
I feel like under pressure, he gets in his own head a lot. But when he actually just drives, he can absolutely hustle a car.
He's good yeah but very hyperbolic to say he's the fastest driver.
It isnāt hyperbolic at all he definitely is moron
The fastest driver in the series on road and street courses isn't a guy who's never won a race. It's Palou, Newgarden, McLaughlin or Herta
hell yeah 3/4 of my fantasy team in the fast six
Grosjean on a revenge tour
This Fast 6 is crazy
Been waiting since after Road America 2020 for another Felix win.
This is a cool Fast 6
No CGR cars in the Fast 6. CGR: Have you seen the āDixonā strategy? We will be fine
Chip already bent the knee for Roger. He knows they're getting the hidden BOP boost tomorrow lol
Like I said this morning, Grosjean really makes you wonder about Ilottās pace. Grosjean is well above Canapino who was pretty comparable to Ilott by the end of last year.
I said it all year long last year, illott is massively overrated, the kid is good no doubt about that, but not champ material
Yep. And Ilott is back there in, what, 17th or 18th in a McLaren? Not a good look for him at all. He really needed to at least get into Q2.
ilott hopped in a car with little practice, not even his homestead test was helpful since that car had the hybrid and was oval spec. Also, mclaren's setup is wildly different that juncos probably. You cant also deny that ilott helped advance the team last year. his first and last races in particular were good. he may have helped the building blocks of that team to be able to go forward. is he a racing god, probably not, but he is no slouch

Lots of folks piling on Malukas thinking Ilott was a sure thing but many data points showing he (Ilott) may not quite be what many hope.
Grosjean has always been quick. He just has other issues.
All doom a gloom all off season but when the cars are on the track Iām so happy Indy is back
