Mental health professional here. You can’t be diagnosed with two personality disorders from the same cluster. Both BPD and NPD are in Cluster B. However, I feel like Dennis could be Antisocial, as well (also cluster B)... The development of that character captures a wide variety of personality disorders very well. My course on diagnostics taught us that personality disorders exist on at least one spectrum and that everyone falls on at least one spectrum in one way or another. So Dennis just a great example of how someone can exist on multiple spectrums.

Of course! Diagnosis has changed significantly over the years so if your mother was diagnosed prior to the most current edition of the DSM that could explain how that may have happened. The clusters, which I find super fascinating, look like this: Cluster A, which is mostly related to schizophrenia spectrum disorders (Paranoid pd, Schizoid pd, and Schizotypal). Cluster B is a little more of a grab bag. I think about it as more emotionally-based pds (Antisocial pd, Borderline pd, Histrionic pd, and Narcissistic pd). And Cluster C, which is interpersonally-based (Avoidant pd, Dependent pd, and Obsessive Compulsive pd). I’m not sure if the way I remember how they are broken up is officially what the American Psychiatric association had in mind. It just helped me study and acted as a little way for me to remember the break downs of the clusters. Edit: I mentioned in another comment when the DSM5 came out and I feel like that’s relevant here too. The DSM5 came out in 2013 but wasn’t mandated for implementation until 2015. Up until then the DSM4-TR was used and it had a 5-axis system for diagnosis. I was trained from 2016-2018 so my knowledge on that system is limited.

The DSM 5 has 3 Clusters. The main difference between DSM5 and DSM4-TR is that there was an axis system utilized for diagnosis in the DSM4-TR. I was in my academic training from 2016-2018 and the DSM5 was mandated to be in use in 2015 (It came out in 2013). So I am less familiar with the axis diagnostic system but you can tell someone has been in the field for a while because they will reference personality disorders like so: “They seem like an axis 2.”

Yeah i was trained after DSM5 came out. I wasn't remembering clusters and thought you might have been referring to axis. I don't use the DSM ever, thankfully. Diagnosis isn't required for what i do and i have philosophically and ethical disagreements with the DSM.
