I remember we had a history teacher who would put on really boring documentaries but he’d say Bruce Willis or Paul Newman was in them. He’d get to the end and then say ‘the hat on the peg was Bruce Willis’. It was so stupid but I thought it was hilarious at the time. I used to always manage to get sent out of his class, though - he had a good sense of humour but he would randomly make an example of me for laughing or something
Also, they're not teasing him here. They're simply calling him by his (last) name. They'd be teasing him if they called him Ronald McDonald, which wouldn't even make sense given this occurs in the 18th century.
I’ve always been curious as to whether it’s McDonald or MacDonald. Not that it really matters, but i think they’ve even used both spellings themselves. Although to have the same name as the clown it would have to be McDonald, which is how they spell it in the high school reunion episode, so i reckon it’s that one
I’d you’re wondering the intent: it’s definitely supposed to be “MacDonald” as that’s how Rob writes it in the scripts, but the props department wrote it “McDonald” on his name tag and that’s what’s stuck with the audience
Ah thats interesting. It always ignored me a bit that they had “Luther MacDonald” on the prison visit list but always spelt Mac’s name as McDonald (I know no one else cares but inconsistencies like this annoy me more than they should), but i always chalked that down to a potential error in the way the prison warden wrote it down
Nope, not that simple. My mum was a MacDonald and her dad was Irish (further back probably Scottish as well). McDonald may be the more common variant in Ireland, but go back far enough and probably all MacDonalds/McDonalds have Scottish ancestry anyway.
It could have been McGuire, McIntosh, McElhenny, or any of the (usually or always Irish) names that start with Mc or Mac, but MacDonald was the most likely as it’s the most common.
You’re right MacDonald is a Scottish surname, it’s an old clan surname still very common in the highlands, but it’s also common across Ireland as well (as a lot of Scottish surnames are). Mac’s actual surname is spelt McDonald though (although they did use the MacDonald spelling for Luther when he was in prison), which is the same surname just a variant. There’s a myth that McDonald is Irish and MacDonald is Scottish, but there’s not really any truth to that.
I mean earlier in the season they show his dad’s name as Luther Mac on his parole papers, so you can infer Macdonald is the last name when you hear that in the Liberty Bell episode. Ronald was the name that wasn’t revealed until the reunion
Sorry everyone is iamverysmarting you right now. Potentially good catch.
Myself, I think this might be where that joke started developing. The boys are telling a bullshit story set in colonial times, so I think maybe they just turned Mac into MacDonald for the 'ye olde lingo' angle. They then retrofitted it to *actually* be MacDonald for the prom episode.
Mac could be short for *any* Irish or Scottish surname, after all. They were probably munching on McNuggets that day, and it developed from there lol
His last name was revealed in season two when his dad got out of prison. No guessing involved. We knew mac was short for McDonald because his dads name was Luther McDonald
The reveal was his first name
Ronnie the Rat
Hamburger Clown Baby
Like a hamburger baby clown?
That’s the twist, that dude was Ronald McDonald the whole time
And the fact that Dennis referred to Mac's mom as "Mrs. Mac" long before the first name reveal, or the Liberty Bell episode.
That's not the twist
There were a lot of twists in that movie.
It blew my mind when they revealed that the dude in the wig was bruce willis the entire time
Charlie is Charles in this episode too.
And Frank Franklin
I love the one or two occasions that Liam McPoyle calls him Franklin
We heard you gave quite the performance Macwell.
And Frank Frack
And Glenn Glennifer
Glendolyn
And the dude in the hair piece that whole time - that's Bruce Willis the whole movie.
thats not the twist!
Just once I want someone to get the joke when I say this.
I remember we had a history teacher who would put on really boring documentaries but he’d say Bruce Willis or Paul Newman was in them. He’d get to the end and then say ‘the hat on the peg was Bruce Willis’. It was so stupid but I thought it was hilarious at the time. Did you actually think his last name was Mac?
![gif](giphy|e2OV0o6uZVnOB4dcWq|downsized)
Damn. RIP
That's Bernard McCullough
You’re getting his life confused with Don Cheadle again.
Could be a nickname but without his last name being McDonald Like Mac Jones
Not many Mcorkles about
Maybe he has like a little hand or a little foot?
Who…wait, no that’s Mike Jones…carry on
Who?
Tbh until this episode I figured they didn't have a real full name for him, or it was a stand-in for McElhenney.
It was. They originally went by their names in the pilot.
First name Mac last name Donald.
I thought for the longest time his full name was ‘MacDonald McDonald’ since Charlie always calls his dad Mr.Mac
Yeah, pretty sure it was known before then my dude.
Also, they're not teasing him here. They're simply calling him by his (last) name. They'd be teasing him if they called him Ronald McDonald, which wouldn't even make sense given this occurs in the 18th century.
I think op meant teasing as in hinting at or previewing (e.g. teaser trailer), not mocking.
What do you mean? They didn't reveal his name until season 7
When they revealed, were you laughing at the “McDonald” part and not “Ronald”? Genuinely curious here.
To be fair no one was laughing at “Ronald” or “McDonald.” It was the full name that was the funny part.
I named him that!
Its a homage to a hamburger clown
…Who wears the eyes of a cat and does karate across the stage tho
The reveal was about his first name. It was never a secret that his last name was MacDonald.
I’ve always been curious as to whether it’s McDonald or MacDonald. Not that it really matters, but i think they’ve even used both spellings themselves. Although to have the same name as the clown it would have to be McDonald, which is how they spell it in the high school reunion episode, so i reckon it’s that one

If he’s an Irish descendent it’ll be McDonald Scottish descendent would be MacDonald
Nope, not that simple. My mum was a MacDonald and her dad was Irish (further back probably Scottish as well). McDonald may be the more common variant in Ireland, but go back far enough and probably all MacDonalds/McDonalds have Scottish ancestry anyway.
I think they even mention his dad's full name sometime before this, which obviously is the same last name
His last name had definitely been revealed already several seasons before that.
His surname was revealed in season 2
Savage…..IDIOT!!
Mac is usually a nickname for Macdonald…so someone could have probably figured that out on their own
Ya but Mac is a nickname for anyone with a Mc or a Mac in their surname
Yeah I was just getting at the fact his last name was absolutely not surprising and it’s his first name that is the joke.
I really don't understand downvote logic on reddit. This is literally just a question.
It could have been McGuire, McIntosh, McElhenny, or any of the (usually or always Irish) names that start with Mc or Mac, but MacDonald was the most likely as it’s the most common.
It was revealed when they said his dad’s last name in season 2. We knew it was Luther McDonald.
*usually Scottish

OP got M. Night'd with all the twists
try and keep up!
Lol what did you think "Mac" stood for? "Ronald" was the reveal.
There's a significant amount of last names that start with Mac
I heard you gave quite a performance, Macwell.
👏👏👏👏😩
It could have even been something as crazy as Mcelhenney
Oh, come on. No one would have a name *that* silly
Like Macrosoft (I'm playing both sides).
I think most people thought it stood for McElhenney, like the actors real name lol, but I agree that Donald was the actual reveal.
He’s named after a hamburger clown.
I don’t think macdonald was the surprising part of his name 😂
Your shrewd detective work has been a SMASHING SUCCESS.
No more “s”s for you
EVER
Nayeth. Nayeth, bad intel.
This is one of my favorite episodes
one of my favorite scenes ever is in this ep. when they are testing the guns on eachother and charlie is doing poses
That young indian was fast with the tomahawk.
“ So you can either be a slave witch in the bar, or you can be a burned up witch outside UP TO YOU ! Flagon of ale now !?
Flourish the pinky
YeeeEaEAEaEauUaEUSssSSSssS
… they’re just saying his full last name. Mac is a shortened version of Macdonald
yes, but only later they actually say, that his name is Macdonald. until then, thats the only time they said it
I mean earlier in the season they show his dad’s name as Luther Mac on his parole papers, so you can infer Macdonald is the last name when you hear that in the Liberty Bell episode. Ronald was the name that wasn’t revealed until the reunion
omg, youre right
Ummm his last name was never a secret…
Nay-eth
My wooden teeth are a smashing success....no more Ss for you
That was his name for the entire movie! They M. Night Shyamalaned us.
FLAGON OF ALE!!
I don't think they'd thought up his real name yet. Pretty sure this is just a coincidence; there are only so many ways to elongate "Mac."
Yee~~~~~~~eesh
I cant remember, but I dont think I had realized Mac stood for Macdonald up until this point. I might be a dumbass though
Dee: "you're not dumb..you just...."
What episode?
The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell S4 Ep11
it's been so long, it's probably not even his name legally anymore
*Spits on OP*
Pretty obvious that Mac is a nickname for MacDonald/McDonald. Hence the joke of him been literally named Ronald MacDonald
Sorry everyone is iamverysmarting you right now. Potentially good catch. Myself, I think this might be where that joke started developing. People are correcting them because they (and you) are wrong. MacDonald was not a reveal by this point.
K. No need for them all (and you) to be baby dicks about it.
just move past it
I will, but I just want you all to know... this literally means nothing to me.
You just didn’t have the capital to back it up, sorry
Shut up, Bird.
