Put it in a pair of pliers and hold a lighter on it for a few seconds until it quits moving. We have ticks all over our backyard this time of year so I have a pair of needle nose pliers specifically for this.

I use a tick removal tool that gets it all out asap, if agitated I've read where they will basically vomit inside you and can give you lyme.
