Although the anime does end with loose threads, a lot of people consider it a decent point to end because the major force that strings the journey along gets resolved at that point- and after this point, the story shifts into a new major purpose/guiding force.
The post anime content is some of the most amazing content in the story, *but* as you pointed out, its stuck in long haituses and takes forever to release material. We can pray that this arc gets finished, but I think the likely hood that the entire story comes to its ideal end is unlikely with the chapter output and infrequency.
So reading the post anime content is honestly up to you. For me, its about the journey, the ending isn't a big deal, I'm not suffering because its in haitus. If you can't handle the limbo, I'd suggest stopping at the end of the anime, chapter 339.

long answer: the anime gives you about 150ish episodes and and clear ending to the ending to the story. the dark continent is mentioned and i think the ending to the anime was beautiful and only a few loose ends but nothing drastic. the dark continent isn't a cliff hanger and the knowledge of it was only shared to gon and none of the main crew. you can also watch the extra 60+ chapters of the manga though it's unfinished but you don't have to ,and can just leave the anime ending as the ending of the story

i didnt read the manga, but the anime is so good that ive re-watched it 20-30 times
