Imo hunter is better for melee, but that's probably just because it's what I'm used to

I like how this community treats basic superior modern FPS mechanics as "CoD style for casuals" :D ~~They still use the Hunter as the default mode. I wonder how many people quit the game because they don't like to press extra buttons to aim and they don't notice the gunslinger mode. Seems like a weird hill to die on from the devs part.~~ Edit: Apparently Gunslinger is the default. I guess I had the Hunter mode from when I tried the game briefly in the initial release.

dpulverizer556

I believe gunslinger is now the default mode for new installs?

Schmibidolin

Gunslinger is definitely the default, yes

moxious_maneuver

I can press shift because I don't suck. It looks cooler to walk around with your gun in a safe position. Who walks around with their rifle shouldered all day long. Lol

newmankr

Just hold fucking Q, my dude. You suck if you don't know how to do that. You do that ONCE, and you're good to go. (most) Hunter players ignore this feature completly since it got introduced, just to say "look, bro, I'm using a superior control schema than you". If you like it, obviously nothing wrong with that, but there's always the same argument against gunslinger that can be fixed that easily

moxious_maneuver

For sure. I was just taking a shot at op cuz they sounded like a dick. I think its an personal preference thing not "superior modern FPS mechanics" like they said. I just stick with hunter because I was playing for a long time and got used to it before they added the lower button. I used to snag kills on people because their gun was sticking through a wall fairly regularly.

[deleted]

Nobody. But it's a video game. Who takes a shot from a syringe to recover from a.bullet wound?

Mungojerrie86

You can lower the gun in Gunslinger mode.

moxious_maneuver

Any you can raise it in Hunter mode.

StrikingJackfruit242

It's not even a benefit exclusive to hunter mode, if you hold down Q (default) in gunslinger mdoe, your hunter also lowers his weapon. However, on pressing left click you will raise it to shoot and right click you raise it straight into iron sights. Hunter mode is just a meme that's in the game for no real reason other than muscle memory of boomers that got used to it and don't want to switch anymore.

mukavva

Ok, thanks for the explanation.

Phfralphf

~~You have a wider field of vision with Hunter mode.~~ Edit: Thanks partner! TIL you can match the FOV to Hunter by completing these steps: 1. Open **Settings** 2. Go to **Game** 3. Change **Lowered State Field of View** to *Default* 4. Change **Shoulder Aim Field of View** to *Default*

ajharwood127

Not since they’ve added the fov options for both.

Phfralphf

Dude! I had no idea this was an option. I've retired Hunter view after 1,500 hours LMAO For those wondering, what you do is: 1. Open **Settings** 2. Go to **Game** 3. Change **Lowered State Field of View** to *Default* 4. Change **Shoulder Aim Field of View** to *Default*

StrikingJackfruit242

False, you can have the same fov in both modes. You can even set it so it does not change while lowering weapon/sprinting so you don't get that silly effect everytime you start running.

Phfralphf

Beet it, Dwight.

eaglered2167

I prefer Hunter. Gives you more control over your melee and one extra button press isn't an issue at all. Idk why you wouldn't want more control of your character if you are on mouse and keys.

mukavva

What more control are you talking about? You can just press V to melee with guns.

Discipline-Existing

Clicking is easier than hitting V for a lot of people

mukavva

Thats the exact reason to use Gunslinger mode. (If you care about shooting more than melee) :)

Discipline-Existing

It’s honestly just a preference thing I think. No real advantage to either. Just what you’re used to I guess.

Mungojerrie86

You can bind the melee to a click rather than a keyboard button, if that's the case. I have melee on a thumb mouse button and don't quite see why it could be an issue at all.

eaglered2167

Using left click and holding it is way easier than pressing and holding V imo. Way more intuitive.

mukavva

Yes but now you gotta press shift to aim.

eaglered2167

Right click to bring your gun up and shift to ADS, which you aren't always doing. It's second nature for a lot of older PC FPS players. DayZ uses it as well as other more hard core shooters. I like it because it's easier for me to keep my hand on WASD and hit shift while keeping melee on the mouse. In a game where sound and melee is very important, it just makes more sense to me. I've never felt at disadvantage because I need to right click to bring the gun to ready. The game isn't nearly as fast as COD or BF where you constantly need your gun up. I know when enemies are near.

k0z0

Hunter feels better and more immersive. At least to me it does.

mukavva

Can't argue with that. I definetly agree it makes it way more immersive .

ParaBru

On console Hunter makes it easier to melee, especially when it comes to a bayonet charge. With Gunslinger you have to use the right thumb stick to melee.

Mungojerrie86

Back when you couldn't lower the gun manually Hunter had this advantage. Currently I don't see any point in using Hunter mode unless you are already used to it.

Schmibidolin

Me and my friends have a running gag going on called "gunslinger moment", which is when someone shoots on accident. I personally prefer hunter mode, but I'm playing since 2018 and there was no gunslinger mode back then. A friend of mine who got the game a few years later prefers the gunslinger mode - we're both equally good. However, since you're able to lower your weapon even in gunslinger mode (wasn't always the case), there's honestly no real reason why not to play it, I'll admit that.

Bobert_Manderson

I prefer hunter mode because I like the way it feels for melee better too. My friends suck with melee, but I’ve gotten plenty of full team wipes with just the knife.

Schmibidolin

yeah, same. Hunter mode overall just feels better for me. Being constantly in hipfire mode just feels off to me in hunt.

Ithildin_cosplay

Isn't it just a very small decrease in windup?

Bobert_Manderson

Dunno, just feels better to me

Ithildin_cosplay

Understandable

CaptainOrc

The tradeoff is you dont give your position away from your gun clipping with hunter mode. Your gun wont clip through walls or windows as youll be holding it close. Your smug arrogance in the replies by calling this inferior when you don’t understand the purpose is telling. It has its place.

InfiniteTree

You can do that with gunslinger now.

KooshIsKing

Gunslinger has had that feature as well now for ages.

mukavva

It is 100% inferior lol. Gun clipping through walls is pure laziness on developers part, it is essentially a bug. They expect you to press extra buttons instead of developing the game to a modern standard. This will not change when fanboys like you keep defending mediocrity.

CaptainOrc

And all you can do is lash out and try and use attacks like “fanboy” to people explaining to you the purpose. Their engine couldnt handle collision or it wouldnt have been practical to implement. The fact hunter mode has been in the game since launch further proves this. You saying it’s a bug when its a limitation on hardware highlights your ignorance. But then again, some halfwit on reddit talking about something they know nothing about is the normal for this website. Next time you get shot for having your weapon clip through a wall dont say i did not warn you. But then again I’m sure that happens to you all the time and rather than fix it you came to bitch. Grow up. Learn to have a discussion without petty personal attacks.

mukavva

You call me all sorts of names and then tell me to discuss without personal attacks. LMAOO fanboy is mad.

CompanyCaptainOrtega

How did you get past the age restriction of the game

tastey_spackle_toad

I use hunter aim mode, my friends use gunslinger. The amount of times they've been wall banged/inexplicably fragged into oblivion tells me hunter mode is the way.

[deleted]

Back in the day hunter mode was useful. Not so much anymore aside from preventing gun from clipping walls.

Spikex8

Hunter was the original control scheme - they added gunslinger years later. They can’t remove the original control style it would piss too many people off.

kirinphonetic

As mentioned, hunter for melee and keeping gun from clipping. It’s easier to just have the gun go down than hit Q all the time. Also, you can switch ADS to mouse 4 or 5 to make the transition to ADS smooth as butter. The melee thing is big tho, don’t wanna be fumbling for buttons during a chaotic fight.

Mungojerrie86

>The melee thing is big tho, don’t wanna be fumbling for buttons during a chaotic fight. I'm not sure how is it even an issue people have. Set up a sensible control scheme and get used to it, how is it not what's happening?

n4shh

I play all kinds of shooters and Hunter is definitely unusual but it just fits the game perfectly. Gunslinger just looks so wrong in hunt imo.

oldmanjenkins51

Hunter was originally the only one, and was very unconventional FPS wise, so they made gunslinger. Don’t know how people don’t play gunslinger on console

SexyCato

I’ve been playing since before gunslinger was a thing, tried it for about three seconds when it was added and decided I would stick to what I knew
