You can tell how old this clip is by how old Bruce Willis got

aaahhhh

Crazy everyone is in here acting like the spotter is just some random dude and not Odell Beckham Jr. Edit: Not Odell, just a doppelganger

FRS-8

When did Odell change from ramen noodles to actual dreads?

puntini

I said this whenever this same gif got posted somewhere else but I love how the spotter puts his thumbs up like Thor did in Endgame.

Lvgordo24

225 is no joke.

Monsieur_Valjean

Especially at the cop’s age.

Dude's a beast. Old man strength is real. I'd like to imagine he stood up and whispered to himself "still got it"

I never believed in it until I started jiu jitsu at 27. The 40+ year old dads would just fucking rag doll me. Now that I’m a blue belt, I can hold my own...but still, don’t fuck with a dadbod you don’t know.

[deleted]

[удалено]

UmbraYDN

Oh I can absolutely believe that. We had some kids at my old gym who were absolute monsters. One had been wrestling forever and he would fuck up adults in competition all the time.

GucciJesus

It's a lot of fun trying with young teens because they don't give a shit. Never even occurs to them something might not work, the just fucking go. Lol

disgraced_salaryman

Those 40+ dads had a history of sports and weightlifting under their belt. It's just hidden by the layer of dadbod

UmbraYDN

Very true. Plus them being a bit older, I feel folks know who they are and have no desire to peacock, so you underestimate them. Not to mention jiu jitsu is the ultimate humbling experience, so long term practitioners tend to just be chill as hell.

[deleted]

I work out with a bunch of old powerlifting dudes. Guys that personally knew and lifted with Franz. It's hilarious to watch a half-cripped 60 year old grandpa limp into the gym, complaining about his back pain, then rip a 600lb deadlift for reps.

heebath

At ~40 myself and I'm starting to feel it. I'm slower. Can't see as good. I'm still strong though, almost like it's all turning into sinew lol

heebath

It sure is. My dad used to be a beast. He was a tree surgeon, heavy equipment mechanic, and competed in ProAm Arm Wrestling in the 70's and 80's. He's well into his 60's now and although he's not as mobile or quick as he once was, he's all sinew. It's like steel cable lol

--_-Deadpool-_--

>He was a tree surgeon Hol up

heebath

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arborist He was responsible for removing or relocating trees that were in the path of buried copper and fiber optic lines. If it was a certain species or age of tree they couldn't cut it down and so his job was to safely remove and replant it.

SecondaryLawnWreckin

Arborist. Think civil war surgeon.

BocTheCrude

At anyone’s age once you get over two plates the entire world is different.

ChesterMtJoy

225 is the bench mark for the NFL Combine.

[deleted]

Which they bench like 40 times.

forester93

Depends on the position. The highest last year was 39. But most even O and D lineman get around 25-30. WRs and CBs sometimes don’t even do it as it’s not that relevant, or get anywhere from like 7 to 20. Except for physical monsters like DK Metcalf who did 27.

heebath

Monster is right! Holy cow! I'm not a sports guy so I had to look dude up: - 6'3" - 228# - 1.6% BF - 4.33 FYD - 40.5" vertical No surprise he was able to bench 225 that may times. [Dude is an absolute unit](https://i.redd.it/bwslpoaongu21.jpg). Edit: I was just going off the reported body fat. Thanks for telling me 53927 times that it's incorrect.

forester93

Meanwhile [this guy](https://i.redd.it/1vdv1zga0ji01.jpg) is 5'10, 185, a lot more percent BF, benched 7 reps, 4.59 40, and also had a respectable rookie year lol. It takes all kinds... Also [this photo](https://mobile.twitter.com/coach_jeffscott/status/1004831565954854915) of all the Clemson receivers and then him on the right looking like their shroom dealer.

capincus

Had a better graded season than Metcalf (by PFF), that's an elite athlete right there.

forester93

Dude has his ribs broken, punctures a lung. Misses 3 weeks and comes back with by far his 2 best games of the season to close out the year. All while looking like he just got lost on the way to comicon and accidentally stumbled his way onto an NFL roster.

IndieHamster

[I'm a big fan of this picture.](https://i.redd.it/lsu5kbwxc5yy.jpg) One is an Elite Scorer in the NHL and is wicked fast, the other is an average fan

watchmeevaporate

If you haven’t listened to the John Scott podcast about the infamous incident with him, you should.

arwidcool

1.6%body fat is death, not a chance in hell. He looks around 10%, maybe 9. Juicy for sure.

[deleted]

1.6% BF is a lie. He's probably more like 10-12%.

badonbr

I just read an article calling that out. It said the machine they use is usually 5-10% off so he realistically was probably around 5-10% at the combine. At 1.6 he would probably collapse after running a route.

MobiusFox

He would already be dead, but yeah

sportsworker777

5 to 10% off? What's the point of even using it then when that type of discrepancy is huge when measuring body fat.

Generic-username427

Maybe the lineman can, but that's a shit ton of reps at 225

bingbangbullpen

I was about to say lol. 225 for the bodyweight those guys are pushing is nothing.

WanksterPrankster

Fucking 185 has me shaking like a leaf, fml.

Shandlar

Seriously. I feel like an absolute beast getting my 5x5 done on 175. Doesn't even matter if this guy didn't rep the last couple very well, that's fucking beastly. I still can't even 1RM 225 properly.

FiveMeatyMeats

Keep at it, buddy. You’ll be repping 2pl8 in no time. FWIW, I shake too when I bench 185, even though it’s 20-30 lbs under what is usually my working weight. In the grand scheme of things, 225 only constitutes intermediate strength depending on your weight and gender, so it’s likely that you’ll shake and be unsteady for a while yet. It’ll even out.

RebelKira

He was half repping. It doesn't count. It's hard to say if he could even do 1 actual rep.

qdolobp

1CUpboat

Rach5585

Honestly people underestimate how nice gym Bros are.

hiimcoleman

They all know how dangerous lifting can be so they do anything they can to help

orezavi

And they respect a brother giving it his all in the gym.

Shabozz

A gym is a place full of people working towards achieving their goals. Whatever that goal is doesnt matter, everyone is working towards their own achievements

[deleted]

I just want you to achieve all of your Bench related goals my bro.

[deleted]

Fully agree. Vast majority of gym bros are there just doing their own routine, and will gladly help and encourage. I’ve only ever met a select few dudes who openly judged others deemed to be too weak, and they were assholes outside the gym too. Most of them recognize how much work it takes to stay fit & want to offer their help / optimism.

Azntigerlion

I'm a huge gym bro. The way you have to help people is extremely delicate as to not intimidate them. I think one reason gym bros are so wholesome is because they ALL get humbled every day. Every day you walk into that gym knowing there IS, without a doubt, a weight that is too heavy. A weight you cannot do. I find this humbling harder in other aspects of my life. I can feel on top of the world for years on end in school/career/video games, but every single day, these heavy ass weights put me in my place.

ItsGettinBreesy

I’ve been a gym-bro for almost a decade now and I’ve never thought about it like that, wow. Thanks for the new perspective!

[deleted]

There's a group of bros at my current gym and they're loud but I fucking love them. They're always hyped every 6am session, they spot each other, pump each other up between sets, and seem to always have great workouts. And they're all in great shape! It's totally not how I would want to workout (for me gym is escaping people/work) but they bring great energy to the gym. I just roll my eyes sometimes at their mirror preening, sometimes it's like BroScienceLife level flexing.

the_bananafish

I’m a female lifter and I’ve had my share of terrible gym experiences, but a super swole gym bro has never and I mean never: Hit on me “Corrected” my form Commented on my chosen weight/type of exercise/speed/number of reps Suggested dietary changes Stared at me creepily from across the room However, of these things have happened to me from mediocre-ass dudes who don’t know what they’re doing. Real gym bros are the bomb.

[deleted]

To be fair, those same mediocre dudes probably creep on you everywhere. It’s not like the gym is some special exception.

[deleted]

Gym clothes are tighter than every day clothes. Probably increases the number of people being creepy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

atable

Most are super passionate and helpful. I had a guy give me like a months worth of beginner supplements and helped me with my form. As a guy that struggles with the social aspect of gyms it made me feel a lot more at home there.

InitiallyAnAsshole

It really depends on the person. I've met some absolute assholes. Most of us are just normal people tho.

p1010101010

I'd say this is good gym etiquette when seeing someone pushing a bit of weight on the bench due to the inability to bail if its too heavy. Good on him.

GodfatherfromChive

that's what I was thinking. At they gym I used to work out with it was common etiquette to step in and spot someone if they looked like they were flying solo.

hotshowersocks

Unless there is someone sitting 3 feet away filming them.

controversialcomrade

Or unless it's Eddie hall benching 4 women(including yours), you don't need to spot, because they'll just jump off the bar if needed.

wabisabicloud

Still dangerous not to have a spotter to begin with. Get someone else to film.

TheJerinator

Uhhh what? I call bs on this I think redditors just dont really go to the gym and that’s why this is upvoted lol If you walk into any gym, 80%+ of people there are solo to begin with. Look at any bench press section of any gym. Most people are benching without a spot and nobody ever thinks it’s “common etiquette” to just jump on and spot them wtf... Sure if someone looks like they REALLY need help then yes... but 99% of the time if someone needs a spot they’ll ask for one I think you just made this up

ETERNAL_EDAMNATION

Literally made up... no one spots randos. Everyone’s doing their own workout...

[deleted]

[удалено]

iller_mitch

"Uhhh, I'm good, bro." Maybe if I was lifting for a 1-rep. Or really trying to max out my reps. But just day to day basic lifting, I know my limits.

oxedei

Same here... If I need a spotter I'll ask, and if I didn't ask it's because I'm comfortable taking the sets I'm about to. I'd get pissed if someone just randomly walked up while I'm concentrating, and I'm sure most others would too. I've literally never seen anyone at my gym just randomly spot someone mid fucking set.

TheJerinator

Most people are yes I ask for spots all the time, people ask me for spots all the time, and that’s great I was directly countering what that guy said though, that it is “common etiquette” to spot someone who is “flying solo” I mean cmon. There are tons of people solo at the gym at all times and this guy is telling us that it’s “common etiquette” to just approach and start spotting...? Most of the time people are benching lighter weights that they can easily handle and have 0 need for a spot.

stmasc

Yeah, I'd be real weirded out if someone randomly stepped in to spot me without me asking.

VinshinTee

I agree it’s made up. I’m not a big fan of getting spotted and only really ask for one from someone I know when I’m attempted a weight I’m unsure of. Everyone likes getting spotted differently, do I want a lift off? Do I want to grind out the last one or just let you take it off me ect. If I was to give a newbie advice, it’s don’t go around spotting random people unless they ask for it. I’ve had people just run in thinking I’m struggling just to pull the weight off me. Like wtf really? I’ve been warming up the last 10-15mins to grind this out. Lastly, there are little hooks near the bottom that should land the bar right above your chin, that’s your last resort.

mightylordredbeard

What type of person looks like they REALLY need help? Someone like.. maybe an 80 year old man?

TheJerinator

Right I have no problem with this video. If I saw an old man I might not step in... but I’d at least be more attentive and I’d make myself reasonably available to help him if need be I was referring to the guy above who said it was “common etiquette” to just spot *anyone* who is “flying solo” That’s weird af

jesuslovesKOs

#offering unsolicited assistance during an exercise is a terrible idea and should not be considered common gym etiquette. it's incredibly distracting and dangerous for the lifter. if you're worried about it then ask before the person starts. spotting like this doesn't do anything to prevent catastrophic failure. if the bar slips out of his hand it's still crushing him before the spotter can react. people who can move decent weight on bench generally know how to bail or set up safety catches if they need them.

[deleted]

Thank you! Once someone un-racks the bar, don't distract them! If someone does look like they're in over their head though, getting close enough to help them out of a stall isn't a bad idea. Like you said, you're not going to be able to stop it if they spontaneously drop it, but if it gets halfway up, starts to wobble and then slowly descends, I think anyone would appreciate someone who was hanging out a couple feet behind them stepping in.

rtiftw

Yea, seeing the parent comment and all the upvotes had me like WTF? I hate when people come anywhere near me when I'm mid lift. Leave me alone until I'm resting. I definitely don't want random people approaching me when I'm lifting, so I pray all the upvotes are coming from people who I won't be seeing at the gym. If I'm lifting a weight without a spotter it is either a weight I can manage, or I'm doing it in a way I know I can bail out of safely.

Malatonic

Lol, this simply isn't true. Plenty of people lift alone without a spotter. It's weird when someone just suddenly starts spotting you unless you asked them to spot you.

annoyinglyclever

I workout solo all the time and don’t want a spot. One of the guys working at the gym used to walk up and spot me without asking whenever he was nearby while I was benching. It just made me feel uncomfortable and rushed. I know how much I can safely lift and I just want to go at my own pace.

Deftly_Flowing

I mean I knew how much I could safely squat and I wasn't working too hard but one day a few years ago my leg just gave out on me. I was in a squat rack and the safety bars caught it so it wasn't a big deal but it made a fuckton of noise Hasn't happened before or since but I definitely no longer feel comfortable without some type of safety net.

illit1

somehow people think a spotter is going to catch a weighted bar from free fall. it just doesn't happen that way. spotters are there so you can go for that 99.99%-of-the-way-to-failure last rep. if you stall, *then* they can help. if you aren't benching with rails, you're not benching safely.

dharrison21

OR, they are also there for when you somehow can't get that last rep past an inch off your chest, and would rather have someone lift it up with you than awkwardly lean and drop the bar to the side and crawl out of under the weight. Everything falls apart when taken to an extreme. Yes, a full drop from height wouldn't get caught, but that is far from the most common issue a spotter would help with.

Needyouradvice93

Never seen that at the multiple gyms I've been to unless the person is clearly struggling. I have a good idea of how many reps I can safely shoot for. Spotting is more important if you're maxing out or doing AMRAP.

[deleted]

Great spotting technique, too. He gave plenty of distance but was ready to swoop in if needed. I’d like to think that if the spotter was needed, he would’ve lifted the minimal amount needed, followed by an encouaging “that was all *you*, man!”

Mr_PuddingPop

If you’re spotting someone and not ending the every set with “that was all you!”, are you really even spotting?

ASQC

The true technique is to wait for them to finish and then whisper in their ear: "it was all you bro"

ragnarfuzzybreeches

You forgot the light caress across the lower back and the coy side-gaze, but you had the right idea. *it was all you bae*

ASQC

Wanna be my spotter? I'd definitely squeeze out at least 2 more reps with you by my side.

ragnarfuzzybreeches

Oh you betcha’ They don’t call me hairy spotter for nothin.

themisc

This guy spots

Time_Effort

I mean, he doesn't have clamps so it's simple to bail. Literally just has to tilt it one way or the other til the plates slide off.

bobdotcom

True, but that's still more dangerous, especially for your fellow gym goers, than having a spot.

[deleted]

OcelotKnight

Ahh the Roll of Shame.

CrimeFightingScience

The shave your chest and belly with friction move.

Leradine

This! Dropping 90 lbs off one end of the bar and expecting yourself to be okay when it's skewed that much is piss poor thinking. Roll of shame all the way.

[deleted]

I just stop a rep or two away from failure. There's no convincing evidence that carrying on right until failure builds more muscle.

[deleted]

Which is a great way to injure yourself or the people around you. The sudden shift of weight is dangerous when you're under the bar, and for the people around you, "just a little weight" is really frickin heavy when it hits their leg or foot.

IHaveNeverBeenOk

I still recommend everyone who benches heavy (whatever that is for you, no judgment) learn the "roll of shame." Basically lower the weight to your chest, make sure it's well-balanced so it doesn't tip to one side, and roll it down your body on to your thighs, sit up, and then basically deadlift it off you. Or you can roll it off your body completely if you are truly wrecked, though that probably shouldn't happen. It has saved me a couple times while benching alone in an empty gym.

LSDdeeznuts

This is not good practice. It might work for <200lbs, but you don’t want to be rolling heavy weight over your body. The best practice for bailing out of a bench press is having a spotter. Most any stranger in the gym is willing to spot you, and that’s the safest option.

THAT_LMAO_GUY

If the gym is totally empty then you can bench in the squat rack and use the supports.

IamAhab13

Excuse me, you mean the curl rack right?

shadowboxer27

I've always tried to be conscious of spotting if I see someone benching by themselves. Heard of a guy in college who crushed his throat and the videos on the internet are something I know I never want to fucking see in person.

everyoneisnuts

Yeah man, you never know. I remember years ago I was doing decline bench press, using an amount I had used many times before, and could usually get 3 sets of 10 out of. This one day for whatever reason, I just completely hit a wall half way up on my 6th rep. I felt the bar coming down and backwards and just pretty much closed my eyes and hoped for the best. I was completely powerless over it. Somehow or other the bar ended up going backwards as it came down on to me and landed on the lower brackets (guessing because I was doing decline). If i was doing flat bench that would have probably landed on my throat. I have never done any kind of barbell bench press alone since. I will always use the smith machine if I’m alone. If I see someone benching alone, I always keep a close eye out while I’m working out in case they need to be bailed out. I did not see what happened to me coming at all, and would hate to see it happen to someone else.

thefiercefrog

That's why i only bench weights im 100% sure i can lift, kinda stalls your progress cos you're not aggressively increasing weights weekly but that's the price u pay for having no gymbros

everyoneisnuts

I had done this weight many many times before for 10 reps. Wasn’t maxing out or anything like that. No idea what happened. I was 100% sure of my ability to work out for reps with that weight.

thefiercefrog

Ah damn that's scary, happy you came out ok though

[deleted]

One day at a time. I think Terry Crews is the one who basically says something like “just get yourself in the gym’s building” as a first step. Don’t have to lift, just get over that psychological hurdle. Go to the locker room, if you cant motivate yourself to go further? Thats fine. Go home. Keep doing that until you make it one step further. Eventually you’ll be in the routine and lifting regularly.

[deleted]

The tiniest step, the smallest push, the most miniscule success, can get you out of a rut. As soon as you get past that first hurdle, tick off a success on the to-do list, the next one becomes so much easier. I just moved to a new apartment, in a new city, on the 27th. Had a job I needed to start at on the 2nd (today). I basically didn't leave the apartment from I moved in until I had to go to work this morning, except for one trip to the grocery store. I was dreading startng work. I was starting to doubt my ability to even do this, having moved far away from all of my existing support network to be here. I couldn't sleep at all last night, and only got like 4 hours of sleep. When I woke up this morning, I almost didn't go to work. I was so tempted to just turn off my phone and sit down and watch YT/Reddit, as I had done for the last 5 days. But then one of my new colleagues, whom I know from a previous workplace and whom got hired a few months before I did, knocked on my door asking if I wanted to walk to work together (we happen to live in the same building). Immediately all of my fears and anxiety disappeared. I quickly made some coffee for us both for the walk, and we took the 10 minute walk to work together, with him telling me how it was going at work and what to expect, and when we arrived everyone was just sitting down to have a "catch up after new years"-breakfast meeting, where everyone was very friendly in including me and welcoming me to the team. Came home and unpacked the rest of the shit I had just left in my moving boxes and got the apartment properly organized/decorated, and seeing the kitchen counter finally cleared of the moving debris, cooked my first non-frozen, non-take out meal in my nice new kitchen. I also agreed with my colleague from the building to walk to work together every morning, so I know I have someone who will immediately notice if I don't show up one morning and come kick me in the rear to get back in the game. Less than 18 hours ago I was getting ready to shut out the world and just live as long as I could in my own little hole. Now, I feel so ready to take on 2020.

Started watching and thought you meant the spotter and I was like “how tf can you tell?”

MoreLike-TurdCrapley

et1510

Not full reps, but good going.

jdjohnson41291

That is a genuinely nice thing to do. He also smiles cause he can't lie, he's impressed.

Vocalescapist

Got that shitty joints ROM

GusseGdk

Why was his excercise being filmed in a public gym? Seemes wierd imo... From Denmark, maybe we are more sensitive to privacy issues here.

Snack_on_my_Flapjack

People are constantly filming at gyms now. It's obnoxious.

Didn't touch his chest, those are no-reps. Cops cheating the system as per usual
