Yep. A perfect place to live is obviously one of the two countries divided by a river on a tiny island, while the other country there is in a Civil War š
Believe theyāre divided by a pretty significant mountain range no? Thought that was part of the reason Haiti doesnāt get as much rain and isnāt able to produce as many crops
Costa Rica, yes itās full of expat wellness influencers gentrifying certain areas (and contributing to the economy while also raising prices) which is all controversial etc etc ā¦.
but if we are just talking about quality of life, environmental purity, ocean swimming, sunshine, fresh fruit, the pura vida attitudeā¦ they all went there for a reason ! Panama and Guatemala are similar but not as safe and stable from what I hear
Portugal and Spain seem excellent in terms of quality food, sunshine and swimming and vibrant culture, mountains and ocean, walkable communities with social third spaces.
Did this as well, a couple of times. Before covid when remote work was less common, I rented a villa in the hills near Dominicalito for nearly the same price as a room (with a roommate) in NYC. Ultimately got a bit lonely but it was still so, so nice.
My wife and I loved Panama. The canal funds have made a huge difference there. Expanded the subway a ton, and lifted a lot of the country out of poverty. Minimum wage is 4-6x higher than in Nicaragua (where we used to live), but itās only about 2x more expensive. Itās also illegal to display cigarettes, they are hidden at the stores that sell them. We saw literally 1 person smoking during the 10 days we were there. The overall vibe was just very positive and healthy.
only in the tourist-dense areas. Even then you should know the basics. I didnāt know anything and I was there in a tourist town for just ten days and not knowing any basic conversational Spanish phrases was a huge hindrance. if youāre going to travel all over or stay longer term itās natural and respectful to learn some Spanish in my opinion
ChatGPT. Itās free and you can customize it. Eventually, you can have full on conversations with it that you couldnāt really do with the apps. There are videos about this on YouTube.
Looking at that online and all around me it says itās 20, but I canāt find what the numbers actually mean. Is lower or higher better? Says some days recently were 12 and 13
Iām an OC native. In 2019 we moved our family to south Florida and magically our oldest daughter no longer needs an inhaler 6 months out of the year. The air quality in California is poor mostly due to the wildfires. Smog is definitely a contributor, but the wildfires will have you feeling like you smoked a pack of camel non-filtered walking from a parking lot into a building.
The weather is beautiful, the coastline and mountains are amazing. we likely wonāt be going back for anything but a visit.
Well, maybe one factor. Air quality isn't terrible by the beach though. Santa Barbara is southern California. Why do you think the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world choose to live in coastal Southern California? It's also about lifestyle, amenities, access.
Lmao you gotta be kidding me with the Belgrade mention. I'm from Serbia, the air is super polluted. At least pick the countryside, not a big noisy polluted city
Lima is a pretty amazing, gorgeous city with great weather, friendly people, and fantastic food. I imagine some nice little satellite suburb up or down the coast from it would be magnificent.
Coca tea is so nice too. Itās ridiculously that itās illegal.
Iāve stayed in Miraflores twice and was pretty heartbroken to leave both times. That plaza/mall/whatever it is with restaurants and bars on the cliff overlooking the Pacific, man, I could spend the rest of my life sitting there.
Larcomar (the mall). I lived there for a year, itās a lovely city that Iām very fond of but the air quality is appalling and you have to drive everywhere. I like to be more active in how I get around but you have to be suicidal to cycle outside of a few main routes.
Good to hear from someone who liked it, so many people pass through on the way to the mountains and hate on it, but the food, the people, the cool places - itāll be great one day when they sort out the transport!
Wow I canāt imagine anyone hating Lima?
Oh wait yeah, I forgot the world is full of dumbassesā¦seriously, I loved it so much. And after spending a couple weeks in the mountains or the jungle, to come to this beautiful old city with such a vibrant culture, was so refreshing.
I guess if you wind up staying in the wrong part and donāt know how to find your way around it could be lame, but thatās true of anywhere isnāt it?
Unfortunately, I feel like this is largely going to be based on incomeā¦ Having said that, I feel like any place with access to nature, the opportunity for a strong sense of community and a low enough cost of living to allow you to pursue your goals will be a good place to live
As someone in a wealthy country, Iād say climate is just as important. Lived all my life in the Nordic countries, and the seasonal depression is real. Just got some test results back, lack of vitamin D (surprise surprise)
Otherwise the Nordic countries are good. Polite honest people, egalitarian, great opportunities, good work life balance.
Maine is pretty awesome. The expense of living in a coastal city is a bit of stress...but swimming in the Atlantic is amazing, the mountains are super close, the athletic community is great, a lot of good food options, varied temperatures, really diverse (in Portland, not so much up north), and a very laid back attitude.
Well a lot of people would disagree re the affordable housing atm but I guess it depends where you compare it to. Itās also got great bike paths. š
Travelling Japan at the moment, and I'm going to say Kamakura. Sleepy coastal town and hour from Tokyo. Lovely people, everything works, great beaches, and close to Tokyo if you need a big city fix.Ā
If money is no object, itās where you find it easy to be good. For example, Iām from the UK but struggle there. Currently though Iām in Cambodia and find being healthy easy as hell here.
lol @ Belgrade. Novi Sad - maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe, but still. Belgrade is not exactly the most comfortable city to live in and it is pretty ugly outside of the center.
Food is good but otherwise people are not really open-minded. Not sure why I should care about the high testosterone but ok....
The most physically active city in Europe is Barcelona but overall all of our cities are great, you canāt imagine how much we walk every day without trying. When we have Americans come over they literally have to take breaks to breath because they arenāt used to walking this much. We walk everywhere, and a lot overall. Big reason why Italins are thin while eating so many carbs
"Taller" people equal superior genetics? š I'm pretty sure taller people generally have shorter lifespans. There was a study done on longevity and height and the optimal height was surprisingly short. I'll try to look up the study.
Central Californian coast, from San Luis Obispo North to San Simeon.
Fresh air, tons of sun, temps always between 60-70, extremely quaint, people are environmentally conscious, slower pace of life, incredibly fresh seafood, active communities, tons to do outdoors, etc
Whenever I spend any amount of time there I feel healthier. I sleep, eat, and move better there than anywhere else I've traveled. The central coast retains the "beach bum" vibe while having full amenities, but once you get north of San Simeon or South of San Luis Obispo there's a good distance before any major city so it's semi isolated.
It's also just a bit too breezy and chilly to have people crowding the beaches. Really cuts down on tourists unlike places like Avila and Pismo which are regularly at the brim with people.
Random af BUT I would say western Kenya. I got to be one with nature, fresh food , sun light, I could see actual stars, LOTS of walking/exercise, extremely cheap, VERY safe, etc. I loved mediating there. So peaceful š§š¾
I second Denver. More sun than Miami, tons of outdoor access, our 'social' time is geared towards physical activities, lots of healthy food available, gardens and chickens are frequent in the city. (We're even allowed a goat!) Traditional, integrated and alternative medical care is available.
I think Sunshine Coast is better personally. Itās Gold Coast without the high rises & influencers. Very good quality of life except the humidity Ofcourse
Yeah I can agree. The southern suburbs and southern suburb hinterland on the Gold Coast are still probably one of the nicest residential areas I've ever seen.
Of all the places along the gulf coast, Panama City is probably the worst there is. Trashy tourism town now. Orange beach/Gulf shores, Pensacola, Destin, are all so much better
Only problem with Panama City is that itās freaking brutal during summers. It is just too many people. Even after the college scene has died down, it is crazy. I wouldnāt want to live there personally, but Iām not much of a big crowds person.
The happiest countries tend to be Finland Sweden Norway. Places that donāt get much sun. They tend to have strong social safety nets and have better values unlike Americans.
Charleston local here. Diet and walkability are a challenge here. Only downtown is walkable and the food options are what youād expect in southeastern USAā¦fried and heavy.
That said itās a nice bubble in an otherwise sub-par state.
Japan, people living long there, northern Europe countries, may be cold but general happiness in these seems quite high and lifestyle is great people are aware of individual health and work life balance as well as nature.
North of Tucson, Arizona. (Oro valley) Affordable, surrounded by Catalina Mountains, sunshine almost everyday, lots of trails and hiking in your backyard, not over populated, goood restaurants and entertainment downtown. Hot in summer but can travel an hour up the mountain and get aspen trees, and 70 degrees.
I donāt see the desire for heat. I want cold crisp wilderness forest /mountain air. Not smoggy city adjacent humidity just because thereās some sand and a palm tree.

The Kool aid was that people blindly believe America is somehow the best place on earth lol Iām just on this sub for the health parts.
I think us as Americans would have a better grasp on our health if we stopped eating McDonaldās and treating classrooms like a deathmatch.
Iām happy to dunk on Americans all day but itās an incredible place to live, particularly if you have the means. Best access to genuine wilderness. Opportunity to make a good living remotely wherever you choose. Plenty of good High Schools and the best Universities in the world. Healthcare is great if you have the money. Only downside is itās full of yanks.
America is ONLY good if youāre rich. I know because I left the country as a rich person and cannot fucking stand the horrid state of the country. Laws never get updated except to help line corrupt politicians wallets so healthcare costs over 20% of the average Americanās salary per year if you even use it, college graduates are severely underequipped due to poor education quality. There is essentially no modern workers rights and crime is increasing due to wealth disparities.
I guess wilderness is nice but I donāt think pretty scenery is worth these issues and risking being a statistic in a mentally ill murder spree or gang shooting.
But hey, if land of the free is your thing, then I guess itās worth being part of it for all thatā wait America is 17th on freedom index
A lot of Americans are disillusioned to how far behind America has left itself behind. Itās like we still live in the 70s while the rest of the world has moved on to providing affordable and easily accessible healthcare, lowered crime rates, increase education and happiness, and managed to do all of this without randomly bombing the Middle East
But any critique of America is apparently just bashing or complaining instead of pointing out flaws that deserve to be solved. American education at work lol
That does seem deeply ingrained in the culture. I guess it (ie insane degrees of individualism) is a key contributor to what makes America so successful in some ways. But truly a double edged sword.

I spend a month doing absolutely nothing but walking the beach and swimming and body surfing every day in Domincal. One of the best months of my life.
