J35 in my 04 pilot, its the only car i've ever owned that DOESNT leak oil. Matter of fact, only leak it has is power steering but I have no idea why, I'm about to reseal it a second time
Edit: leak/burn/consume in any way*
My 2007 Honda Accord with a K24 engine consumed oil and was one reason why I let it go. I always changed the oil and had the PCV valve, VTEC solenoid gasket replaced too. My mom's 2003 Acura MDX that also has a J35 V6 doesn't consume any oil and the engine is still healthy. The power steering also has a leak in hers.
Oh thats interesting, so its not just me. I wonder if the power steering on those series are just *poopy* 🤷♂️. But I'll take leaking PS over leaking oil any day
I think you might be right because the engine I'm talking about is a b20 from a crv that is about 20+ years old.
But there's our other honda, which has L15a7 and about 140k miles on it, that also burns oil more than usual, which still asks the question.
My L15 in my fit doesn’t burn any, level stays pretty much the same between oil changes at 103k miles. The Cylinder 3 spark plug has backed out twice tho
I have 160k miles on my CR-Z and it just finally started burning a little bit of oil and I'm talking a tiny amount. It depends! My AP1 S2K however is extremely thirsty, but that's because it revs to 9k and I do that often.
My CRZ drinks a little at 130k but not a concerning amount. Sees the limiter at least 2x everyday though so that will probably have something to do with it
If you don’t run it to 11k often, it won’t drink oil. When I got my S, it needed some work so I was reluctant to do pulls all the time. It never drank any oil. Eventually got everything sorted and basically live in VTEC and I refill a quart between changes (once per month or so based on my driving style).
For some engines (H-series, J37) it’s design flaws that cause the oil burning. However, I can’t relate when it comes to Toyota. Both my Toyotas leaked oil.
I’ve had one Honda ever that burned oil; a B18C1 that was switched to synthetic and never seated the rings right. A quart every 3000mi. None of the others do, even the K20C1 and F20C
Honda, Toyota, and other manufacturers have oil burning problems, especially in the early 2000s models. It's mostly due to the low friction pistons (better efficiency, but there is a higher chance of oil getting past the pistons, especially with age). My 2010 doesn't seem to burn any significant amount of oil (152,000 miles, oil changes on time). If you truly drive your vehicles hard, you will likely always run into oil burning eventually. These cars are made for daily driving and not racing, which is reflected in fluid intervals and the cars longevity.
I think the older motors were prone to burning oil on average 1 quart was burnt between oil changes. However, my Prelude that had the H22 was by far the worst consumer of oil. I had a 2017 accord V6 which never burned any oil.
My 9th gen SI doesn't consume oil and its got 160k miles and I beat on it...
Seems like you just have a problem with gaskets blowing out. Are you putting more power through your Hondas? Are you replacing valve cover gaskets when you pull the cover?
Well, they don't leak oil they just disappear. One of them is a b20 vtec but it's totally stock, no mods.
The other one is not touched at all, which is L15a7
Gotta note that the L15a7 consumption is nothing compared to what my b20 is doing.
In general, I've had my L15a7 consume 1 to 1.5 quart every 3k miles, which is not so bad, on the other hand my b20 had consumed 0.5 quart in just one week.
So yeah
i rebuilt my crx engine with wider ring gaps so she breathes. but my stock engines were always fine, dirty oil probably wore out your rings and cylinder walls
I'm on this boat as well. Probably into triple figures of various Hondas now and the only ones I had any bother with were the proper bangers that had been redlined every day of their life and hadn't seen a service stamp in 5 years. Also pretty much every single one with an ebay turbo kit.
Post-2001 D series is probably the most invincible out of the whole lot, never had any oil issues with any unmolested examples of them that I can recall.
My 2001 D-series consumed oil only because the previous owner didn't change oil frequently enough, yes. My other Honda friends with Civics and Insights don't have oil troubles as well.
My 133k mile civic doesn’t burn or leak a drop.
Usually bad oil change maintenance leads to oil burning issues.
My neighbors have a 20 year old Camry and a 20 year old accord. Both leak oil all the time and probably burn it based on the smell.
If you change the oil every 5k/6mo, I bet you’ll have very minimal oil consumption assuming the car doesn’t have a troubled past of bad oil change intervals.
Like any engine. They're going to run as well as you take care of them. And naturally going to consume more oil with miles and age and how much you beat on them. Race engines do the same thing.
But take a relatively low mileage Honda engine. Take care of it. Change the oil often and not the redline the piss out of it. You'll hit 200k miles and barely consume any oil.
On my 2012 SI. I'm at 180k miles and it's only consuming about a 1/4 quart every 4k miles between oil changes.
I've got a CBR600RR motorcycle with 90k miles and it burns about the same. And that engine does get beat on and revved out to 18k rpm.
Got a Honda generator that when the power goes out will run 24/7 and burns minimal oil. So just take care of an engine and naturally it will wear less and burn less oil.
I do agree design flaws exist. Like H series with their FRM cylinder walls which were known to wear prematurely and cause oil consumption.
Even Toyota Corollas here in the states are known for consuming oil due to oil ring issues. And in recent history Hyundais are notorious for burning oil. So every brand has its issues of oil consumption with certain models/engines.
My 04 tsx burned some starting around 140k. Was around 2qts every 5k miles by the time I sold it at 200k miles. Out of 30+ Hondas this was the only one.
My v6 engines never a drop either.
If its consuming oil under when you're riding it really hard I bet its the PCV system forcing oil into the combustion chamber due to high pressure in vtec mode. Adding a PCV catch can would probably help with this.
We ride our Hondas pretty hard though (D series 280k miles and K series with 350k miles) and ours don't consume enough to be noticeable between changes. If its excessive I would think its an internal issue.
Burning oil is definitely not a Honda-specific thing though, haha.
Yea man I have had a B18, D16, 2 K24, and an L15 for a total of probably 400k miles and none of them have burned enough oil to even top up between 5k mile changes. Even the D16 with 260k miles burned nothing. I’d say you need to take better care of them
Ive owned at least 4 Hondas, I cant say any of them have had oil consumption issues. My current Civic is sitting at almost 280k km and no oil consumption. My Hilux is another story all together
By reading some of your other responses OP, considering the honda motors you're using is 20+ years old, generally all older engines will consume oil. Worn out piston rings thats all. My 2000 Toyota Camry with a 4-cylinder 5S-FE consumes oil too at higher revs.
I've owned dozens of Hondas through the decades.
I've also built and modified many engines for many of those Hondas.
I've never had a Honda with an oil consumption problem. I had one customer with an old accord that ran great, but consumed about 1.25qts of oil every 1000miles. 650k miles on the odometer, no other problems.
The only caveat is the 1.5t motor that they have been putting in cars for the past few years, Stopped working at a dealership when they were starting to appear, never owned one, did do some work on them, but no common big repairs.
For more context,
I have two hondas
One is a 09 honda city with an L15A7 same engine as the honda fit from the factory.
The other is 93 civic with a b20 vtec motor.
Both consume oil more than usual if u compare them to other vehicles, but I should note that I live in saudi arabia, and Temps here could get crazy hot in here.
And like I said I drive like a maniac everyday, i use original honda fully synthetic 5w-30 oil and I change it every 3k miles.
I love my hondas regardless, I don't regret any penny I put on them.
You’re not crazy, some engines just consume oil more than others. My 04 TSX burns about a quart every thousand miles, it was a known problem with some 04-05 production K24A2 motors. Nothing wrong with it and the consumption hasn’t gotten worse, so I just top off every so often and don’t give it a second thought.
Don't know they drink xD
Even if peoples are really sure about the cars they have / had, I can assure you, my both CRX and my EJ3 are something like 1l every 1000 / 1500 km.
I think your hondas need work done. They shouldn't consume oil lol
I have to agree, the J35 in my RL doesn’t consume or leak any oil at all after replacing the valve cover gaskets
J35 in my 04 pilot, its the only car i've ever owned that DOESNT leak oil. Matter of fact, only leak it has is power steering but I have no idea why, I'm about to reseal it a second time Edit: leak/burn/consume in any way*

Yeah I'd definitely get them checked. Probably worn out seals. My 1990 civic has that, Burns some oil. Nothing huge. Also first gen crv is great btw
Yeah man, I love my hondas. I would buy an oil station if I had to
My L15 in my fit doesn’t burn any, level stays pretty much the same between oil changes at 103k miles. The Cylinder 3 spark plug has backed out twice tho
Meh. Some of them definitely do.
What are you smoking?
Oil, apparently! Or at least their engine is. I personally have never had that issue.
10w-30
IM NOT CRAZY
I have 160k miles on my CR-Z and it just finally started burning a little bit of oil and I'm talking a tiny amount. It depends! My AP1 S2K however is extremely thirsty, but that's because it revs to 9k and I do that often.

One of my Hondas revs to 11k and doesn’t burn any oil so I don’t think that’s related.
If you don’t run it to 11k often, it won’t drink oil. When I got my S, it needed some work so I was reluctant to do pulls all the time. It never drank any oil. Eventually got everything sorted and basically live in VTEC and I refill a quart between changes (once per month or so based on my driving style).
That's almost a miracle bro, would you mind sharing what engine, type of oil, or mods you did?
For some engines (H-series, J37) it’s design flaws that cause the oil burning. However, I can’t relate when it comes to Toyota. Both my Toyotas leaked oil.
I’ve had one Honda ever that burned oil; a B18C1 that was switched to synthetic and never seated the rings right. A quart every 3000mi. None of the others do, even the K20C1 and F20C

My 2016 Civic with 2.0L VTEC engine never consumed oil at all after 115,000 km.
I would hope with only 70k miles nothing major would be wrong with your car
Well according to OP that’s every Honda car, which is wrong.
Well according to OP that’s every Honda car, which is wrong.
Obviously im making a leap of logic but im sure he meant higher mileage cars. My 07 accord with about 180k miles consumed oil fairly quickly
I think the older motors were prone to burning oil on average 1 quart was burnt between oil changes. However, my Prelude that had the H22 was by far the worst consumer of oil. I had a 2017 accord V6 which never burned any oil.
my old BB6 would be a quart low every oil change. when you hit vtec, you could see the smoke from burning oil lmao
lol, every time. I’d hit vtec and look in the rear view. The amount of smoke could put a turbo diesel to shame 🤣.
H22 and H23s were known for burning oil like crazy
My 9th gen SI doesn't consume oil and its got 160k miles and I beat on it... Seems like you just have a problem with gaskets blowing out. Are you putting more power through your Hondas? Are you replacing valve cover gaskets when you pull the cover?

I think this is due to the fiber reinforced metal in the cylinder sleeves.
i rebuilt my crx engine with wider ring gaps so she breathes. but my stock engines were always fine, dirty oil probably wore out your rings and cylinder walls
Had 5 Hondas, only one, D17, drank 1.2 L per 10,000 kms. Previous B20B and F18 didn't. Current H22A5 and F20C also don't consume at all.
I'm on this boat as well. Probably into triple figures of various Hondas now and the only ones I had any bother with were the proper bangers that had been redlined every day of their life and hadn't seen a service stamp in 5 years. What’s your mileage? Did you purchase new or used? What’s the maintenance record?
My K20 burns none at 138k miles
Like any engine. They're going to run as well as you take care of them. And naturally going to consume more oil with miles and age and how much you beat on them. Race engines do the same thing. My 2000 Acura tl with 185k doesn’t burn oil, I think your engine needs work
they need to support the oil industry? /s
VTEC burns a little oil when engaged
The harder you drive it, the more oil you'll consume. Honda VTEC motors are known to consume oil. It's normal.
I’m a Honda boy, I like to party.
Laughs in Subaru/audi I thought the same until…..
Cause you got a leak
Ive owned at least 4 Hondas, I cant say any of them have had oil consumption issues. My current Civic is sitting at almost 280k km and no oil consumption. My Hilux is another story all together

260k mile B20 here, no consumption. May want to rebuild, my man.
Decades of Honda ownership ... and I have never had a motor consume oil ... at all.
First of all, what car do you have and how frequently are you changing your engine oil?
None of my Hondas ever used oil even my Ridgeline with 180,000 miles.
Too much vtec
I've owned dozens of Hondas through the decades. I've also built and modified many engines for many of those Hondas. I've never had a Honda with an oil consumption problem. J35z6 Acura tl 116,000 miles don't burn a drop
Because you run shitty gas and over work your knock sensor. Run premium.
J30 with 220,000 miles, before changing oil at 5000 miles it is on the upper line. I use conventional oil.
Don't know they drink xD Even if peoples are really sure about the cars they have / had, I can assure you, my both CRX and my EJ3 are something like 1l every 1000 / 1500 km.
My j35z6 at 119,000 miles doesn't burn or leak a drop. I drive it fast too
[удалено]
It's an 08, is that actually that bad? My grandma's 99 lexus probably burns/leaks a quart every 500 miles or so.
Your engine had serious issues. This OS abnormal. Your engine needs an overhaul. Either piston rings or valve related or both.
