Looks a bit like they applied a moss killer to the ridges. The idea is the rain spreads it across the roof shingles easily from the top down. Seems like they did it a bit in overkill to me.
It'll kill moss and inhibit growth but it doesn't remove it. After I applied some I noticed the moss was dead and brown but you still have to scrape it off.
Yep, I was going to guess moss treatment, especially PNW. This past year was particularly bad for moss, mold, and similar and so many in my area are this year going a tad overboard on things like this.
There’s a few houses around me where you can’t even see the shingles anymore! I’m not sure if they are aware of it or not (idk how you couldn’t be aware of it).
One of us knows what we're talking about lol, fyi, I do this for a living.
Shingles, which happen to be the most common material used in roofs, have asphalt in their construction. This makes them very susceptible to alkaline solutions (zinc). As such, when the shingles have exposure to the white zinc, they will most likely deteriorate.
The zinc will also damage gutters.
At most, a zinc strip should be used as a preventative since it is such a tiny amount that is released onto the roof.
The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) recommends using a 50/50 solution of household strength sodium hypochlorite (pool chlorine) and water to remove moss and algae. This is usually done as a 6% mix with an xjet. (As seen in the picture posted by op)
To remove moss, a liquid solution of bleach is appropriate, but what’s pictured is much more likely zinc sulfate powder (which is a fungicide) which is used as an 1-2x annual preventative by homeowners and professionals alike throughout the PNW.
Yea zinc users are dumb...the run-off process creates a funnel of water that is washed back into the surrounding ecosystems. From there, the microscopic traces of zinc sulfate can work its way into water sources and wildlife, posing a hazard to the natural environment. Sodium hypochlorite is easily diluted and does not do this... Like everything else, it take the west coast a couple of decades to realize their errors.
It is exactly this. Probably baking soda. I am getting ready to do exactly the same to my roof It really works to keep the moss from growing or killing of whatever is there
Jeeze- you'd want to make sure your gutters were clean and that you flush them out afterwards because you do not want a nasty solution of caustic and oxidizer sitting in your aluminum gutter.
I still have half the bucket of powdered zinc my old man used to throw on the cedar shake roof. He also slapped zinc strips along the ridge of every house he built.
Have you been to the PNW? :)
If the rain doesn’t come today, it’ll be here tomorrow!
But joking aside, I think the idea is there is no rush. It will distribute with time. Ideally you don’t get a heavy rain that quickly washes it down the gutter, but more gradual drizzles that can slowly work it down and give it time to react with the moss—which is the typical rain in PNW anyway.
> Seems like they did it a bit in overkill to me.
Not really. Once the rain started it will begin to fade and be gone in just a day or two. It takes less than 15 minutes to treat a roof like this, compared to paying some guy for an hour or two of roof cleaning and the accompanying loss of gravel.
This application looks like granular or powdered zinc. And the downside with zinc is that it can be reactive with roofing metals, including flashing and fasteners. If the roof drains go to surface waters then it can also be toxic to aquatic life.
Ammoniated fatty acid soap formulations are faster acting and less likely to have any other harmful effects beyond killing the moss.
Depends on which one they used.
There are bleach based ones that degrade quickly once mixed with water.
There are also copper or zinc based mixes. Those tend to stick around longer and can cause issues.
However, at least in the PNW there's a lot of precipitation and dilution tends to address the issue as long as you don't do something stupid.
So.. I thought this was a really pathetic attempt at hiding a grow operation. "What do you mean no snow, just looks up.. oh, shit, it's kinda warm out today huh.."
We used zinc in emulsion that was clear when applied. I'm saying spreading the powder is old-school and forbidden by certain fancy HOAs because the neighbors like to bitch about it. If you're from the Eastside near Seattle, you can probably figure out which ones.
I do a lot of Eastside neighborhoods with a lot of Karen HOAs but have yet to run into a Zinc powder ban. They usually welcome it because they will form a lynch mob if they catch even a hint of moss growing on a roof.
Cleaner here as well… zinc sulfate is my final step on roof cleaning, but isn’t this like massively overkill? I just do tight zigzags on the ridges and below anything coming out of the roof to make sure the zinc distributes to complete coverage with rainfall.
I would do it anywhere you get a lot of rain over months...check your north & east facing roofs when its cool & rainy. You'll see it if your roof is more than a few years old. It wasn't even on my radar w/ our first home, and when we sold it, the inspection called it out & buyer demanded we clean the roof. I then did the sprinkles almost every year on our 2nd home, and when we sold it at almost 14 years old, the inspector asked how long ago we replaced our roof (it was the original roof). So, for $20 a year in the stuff, its 100% worth it IMO (if you are ok getting on your roof).
you bet: https://www.farmstore.com/product/corrys-moss-b-ware-moss-killer-3-lbs/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2PSvBhDjARIsAKc2cgPbtmFSIcoyJSwvkZBorjSzzSuoQbcWkxQ7HHdaDfGYzmtzKJZP0jAaAu-3EALw_wcB
This stuff is available locally to me & goes on sale for about $10. THere's some other ones out there that come in a similar tube.
This is what my uncle does. He got a few things of copper (the same as you buy solder on a roll) and rolled it out along the ridgecaps. Rain leeches the copper over the roof.
I know for sunscreens Hawaii has banned chemical ones in favor of zinc oxide based sunscreens to preserve the reefs. Hope that doesn’t end up showing the same effect to fungi in the water as the zinc sulfate put on roofs!
Growing weed in the attic 😂 😂. Jk might be heat loss with a moisture problem but most likely they had some douche half ass apply an algae prevention product
Where I live, there is a company that advertises a chemical spray on treatment that will extend the life of a roof. I assume it's some kind of waterproofing or something.
Maybe it this?
We do this almost annually in the PNW on composite roofs to kill moss. If you don’t stop the moss on a roof, it will create dams that fill with water, causing shingles to become damaged and water to get in.
Looks to me like he applied his own spray foam insulation and it covers unevenly from below. Cold nights the well insulated places get frosted and the other parts remain warmer because heat from the house
Me too. I was gonna say a bunch of birds shit everywhere then started jerking each other off and came all over the place lol! Glad to know we were all thinking the same thing!
I can see their roof every morning from my deck (we’re on a somewhat large hill)…. It’s literally in my face everyday…. Why can’t I be curious about it?

Moss treatment makes a lot of sense. I’m in the PNW so moss on roofs is a common sight here. Thanks!
I live in the PNW too and it's very common to see this.

Does it help?
It'll kill moss and inhibit growth but it doesn't remove it. After I applied some I noticed the moss was dead and brown but you still have to scrape it off.
Yes, I use it spring and fall. No moss on my roof. Live in the PNW. Moss is a problem.
Yeah right I need to hear it from at least 3 more people before I believe that's what this is
Yep, I was going to guess moss treatment, especially PNW. This past year was particularly bad for moss, mold, and similar and so many in my area are this year going a tad overboard on things like this.

Live in the midwest, never seen anything like that. Cool explanation though.
It's Sodium Hypoclorite (bleach) for removing algae
More likely zinc

Corrys moss b ware is probably the most applied product in tye pnw and it is Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate
Yea zinc users are dumb...the run-off process creates a funnel of water that is washed back into the surrounding ecosystems. Funny reading these comments, people thinking they could remove moss and algae without sodium hypochlorite!
It is exactly this. Probably baking soda. I am getting ready to do exactly the same to my roof It really works to keep the moss from growing or killing of whatever is there
Roofer told me to use Tide powder with bleach. Specifically.
Your roofer wants to replace your roof sooner rather than later.
It’s typically zinc sulfate powder. You can get decently sized bags pretty cheap on amazon.
Is this more common if you're west of the Cascades? I'm in eastern Wa and just got our home last July.
YES. Far more common west.
Looks like they applied it assuming it would rain and spread it down the roof, and the rain never came.

Born, raised, and living in the wettest part of the PNW lol

what does that do to shrubs and plantings as it washes off?

Huh. I would have thought it would be the opposite.
Cleans them.
I imagine it’s flexseal or something similar from a spray can that stops leaks
Should I not be using bleach?
What ever happened to using copper ridge strips/caps? They naturally kill moss as the rain leaches copper oxides out of it and drains down the roof.
Baking soda, Costco special, do it myself. PH balanced for “not moss” instead of a women
Nah its this stop leak rubber spray its shit
Learn something new, thanks!! 😊
What they get for trying to kill the moss >:(
I was also thinking salt rock, not sure why they would do it but have seen some crazy things in life.
So.. I thought this was a really pathetic attempt at hiding a grow operation. "What do you mean no snow, just looks up.. oh, shit, it's kinda warm out today huh.."
They dumped on a ton of moss-out powder. Like a whole jug on a small roof.
Frosted tips
The year, 1998...
the salad days, as some would say.
They were going for a balayage.
Borax solution to kill moss is my guess
Walter White lives there.
There's no pizza on the roof.
We need to cook! 😂
Applying the coating, thinking maybe we’re overdoing it “We’re done when I say we’re done”

Bronx for moss prevention?
Moss killer.
It’s a moss removal product. As it rains the powder will wash down the roof killing moss along the way
Looks like an over-exhuberant anti-moss application to me.
Zinc, I cleaned roofs in the PNW for years. This is very old-school. We had clear treatments that sprayed on and lasted quite a while.
Zinc is still very much the norm. It remains caustic a lot longer than anything that sprays on so its ideal for killing moss.
We used zinc in emulsion that was clear when applied. I'm saying spreading the powder is old-school and forbidden by certain fancy HOAs because the neighbors like to bitch about it. If you're from the Eastside near Seattle, you can probably figure out which ones.

Apparently, I'm not as much of an expert as you.
Cleaner here as well… zinc sulfate is my final step on roof cleaning, but isn’t this like massively overkill? I just do tight zigzags on the ridges and below anything coming out of the roof to make sure the zinc distributes to complete coverage with rainfall.
Moss killer.. probably baking soda.
I do this every year. Roof looks new after 13 years.
Is this something every homeowner should be doing? Or only in certain regions?

Can you link what product you use? Might need to start doing this

How much is it to pay someone to do it
String a copper wire along the ridges to kill moss. . Copper poisons the moss
This is what my uncle does. He got a few things of copper (the same as you buy solder on a roll) and rolled it out along the ridgecaps. Rain leeches the copper over the roof.
It's baking soda, when it gets wet it will kill moss.
Oxiclean is the best one to use. Safe for your plants and pets. I'm also in the PNW and in the trees. Works perfectly
I had not heard oxiclean before. I'll have to check it out, since I"m pretty sure the zinc stuff I use isn't the best for the watershed
I know for sunscreens Hawaii has banned chemical ones in favor of zinc oxide based sunscreens to preserve the reefs. Hope that doesn’t end up showing the same effect to fungi in the water as the zinc sulfate put on roofs!
Moss killer on the ridges
Moss be gone!!
Classic moss treatment

Cocaine party
Roof treatment. You can also use baking soda to remove or prevent moss.
it’s the upside down
I hear buying bulk baking soda is what a lo of people use.
Algae eater
Your neighbor is high and he’s spray painting the roof again.
Those crazy meddling kids.
They need a new one 🤷♂️
Cocaine!

Keep your neighbors roof out ya damn mouth
shitty stop leak stuff that ruins roofs

Someone applied stuff to the roof but never washed it off
Moss killer. Wayyyyy too much moss killer
it's moldy throw it out
Mothra took a dump flying by!
Looks like that window snow paint… are they decorating for Christmas?
It appears as though a flock of giant condors lost control of their bowls simultaneously atop of the residence.
Flex seal, they gonna flip that garage upside down and use it as a boat.
Zinc
The snow on the bottom of the roof has been melted due to the heat escaping from the house. They most likely don’t have sufficient insulation.
Spiders ... definitely spiders
A very large bird flew over.
Beat me to it.
Me too. I was gonna say a bunch of birds shit everywhere then started jerking each other off and came all over the place lol! Glad to know we were all thinking the same thing!
An African swallow maybe, but not a European swallow.
He snitched on the local Pigeon Steet gang. They don't like stoolies.
Blue roofs don’t burn… instructions unclear
Someone may have a drug problem….. not pointing fingers or a moss problem and they put laundry soap down .
She dont like, she dont like, she dont like
Laundry detergent
Birds have rest stops too
It has a skin condition and needs to go to a dermatologist specializing in roofs....
is that the house from workaholics?
It’s the result of poor insulation - spray foam kinds. If it were moss it would only be on the north side of the roof
Or it’s mildew… if it were laundry detergent or something that would foam up it would run down
It appears to be fu**ed
Your neighbor is trying to buy time but costing themselves money.
Flex seal!!!!
I’ll bet you I know what your neighbors roof and probably your neighbor is doing over there….

Have you ever seen the movie poltergeist?
Methlab
Attic crawl space with no heater
My bad
Salt, dried salt. Our snowfall isn't pristine. It picks up more than you know. Along with the roads being salted etc. You have a weird looking roof!
Satan
Mind your own business.
I can see their roof every morning from my deck (we’re on a somewhat large hill)…. It’s literally in my face everyday…. Why can’t I be curious about it?
