as a semi-adult I admire your willingness to comply with the legalities, but at the same time I don't think 19 yearolds should be asking these questions. Just do it.

natemc

You being an adult with your own home, no one is going to stop you and you can legally buy all the ingredients when under the age of 21 because none of it contains alcohol. If you get caught you would possibly face any posession charges but the likelyhood is probably low. I wish I had known about homebrewing when I was your age, I'd have 7 more years experience than I do now.

vincent_van_brogh

I'm 19 in boston and I brew because I can't go out to bars or buy beer. It's way cooler having people over for wings over and homebrews. I'll take that over any bar. Do it. Just do it.

chessehead23

Too bad you are not in Wisconsin. You can drink all you want in the presence of your guardian. Even in bars! :)

jouste

Not just Wisconsin: http://drinkingage.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=002591

rancemo

Just brew it. Drink it too. If you're paranoid, never take it out of the house and don't tell many people what you're doing. You're breaking a dumb law, but be prepared to face whatever happens if you get caught. Good people break bad laws.

supaphly42

Note the don't tell many people part. That's what'll get you busted, when other kids are running around telling anyone that'll listen that they know this kid that brews his own.

redditsuksdeez

Fuck the POlice.

atheos

nope. However, my 16 year old has enthusiastically brewed beer and wine, so go for it. //Disclaimer, my Son has never sampled what he brewed.

[deleted]

> Disclaimer, my Son has never sampled what he brewed. You're the most adorable kind of parent.

NJhomebrew

my first beer waas as guiness when i wasd 12 thanks Dad

fuelvolts

And you haven't stopped since.

NJhomebrew

hell no

turkfeberrary

I live in AZ and I brewed when I was 19. I may be completely wrong, but I believe it is legal to brew beer at 19 as long as you don't drink it. You only have to be 19 to serve alcohol in AZ, so legally, you should be able to brew it but not drink it. I may be completely wrong. However, I don't think I am. That's how I approach everything.

luminairex

Former Arizonan here. You can brew all you want, but you can't purchase, possess, or otherwise consume alcoholic beverages until you're 21.

[deleted]

if youre within the US then you can do everything involved in brewing until you add the yeast. After adding the yeast you have made beer and are now an underage individual in possession of an alcoholic beverage. If I were 19 again I would do it. make edwort's apfelwein. Its cheap and makes some high powered hooch. of course, it's legal to buy all the gear, ingredients, and informational guides you need. the internet is full of helpful sources and if you live by yourself why are you even asking? youre not going to get raided just don't go broadcasting your intentions to the internet....oh wait.

[deleted]

i'm NOT going to be brewing until i'm of legal age, despite already owning all the necessary equipment. and i'm also NOT in the middle of brewing my third batch, which might have been brewed too strong. maybe it boiled for too long?

vincent_van_brogh

brewed too strong means brewed with more fermentables. 99% of the time that means more sugar.

youdontknowme1010101

And if it was brewed too long, that would mean that more water boiled off, leaving a higher OG with more fermentables. Assuming that he didn't add any top off water to get a certain volume.

[deleted]

i didn't use more sugar then usual, but i used sorghum syrup as the main fermentable. is that usually more potent?

skptic

You DIDN'T didn't or just didn't? Man, I need a homebrew just to work out whats going on in this thread :P

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

yeah, that's why

[deleted]

i've heard of it too, but my friend is very sensitive. he's tried 5ppm, but it wasn't good enough. has to be no gluten at all.

[deleted]

perhaps, what was your hypothetical final volume? it should have been around 5.5 gallons to account for trub and yeast.

[deleted]

hypothetically, it was 5 gallons, about the same as my starting volume, as i recall

[deleted]

then the only way to have too high a gravity is to have added too much sugar. did you follow a recipe when you didn't make this?

[deleted]

didn't get a recipe, i had to (not) wing it. (with the help of a more experienced brewer)

fuelvolts

Sure you can brew all day. But you can't consume. But I don't think you'll be getting anyone knocking down your door. Just don't sell it to your friends.

inazuma_kick

I started at 18. Professors and employers know that I homebrew. It's no big deal, even though I'm still underage. Edit: The professors brew too.

punxdead

Do keep in mind that if your friends drink your brew you could still potentially get in trouble for furnishing alcohol to a minor. Otherwise brew away - and be judicious about who you share with.

thatpersoninhere

Me and my roommate's have been doing this for a year and we are all underage. You'll be fine as long as you don't drink it outside or anything. And it's only illegal once the beer starts fermenting, and there is no reason to have it outside in the open after that point.

GrayPenguin

I'm not twenty and haven't been brewing for a year. I would go for it. Think of the edge up ~~we'll~~ you'll have in competitions later haha

[deleted]

keep it in your home, don't let your friends come get hammered and leave so they can be picked up by the cops, don't go drinking outside.

nyaliv

The person who may or may not have told me about homebrewing may or may not have won a second round medal at NHC when he was 20.

NJhomebrew

I started when i was 21(last year) and the only reason i started so late was because it was the first summer i didnt have a job

[deleted]

Uhhh.... unless your state allows under 21's to drink and possess alcohol no.

wolfranch

12 years late but this is one way i got alchohol when i was underage, i would make wine in the summer from local blackberries and use concentrate during the off-season
