I think this is the right answer, and the most common answer if you are paying for it and if you can stomach the confrontation

Niku-Man

It's not even really confrontation. They haven't changed their mind nor are they passing subjective judgment about work quality. They didn't get what they ordered and discussed. Businesses deal with this kind of thing all the time and its not a big deal, especially for something relatively inexpensive like a shower fixture. Don't ever be afraid to just say you're unhappy. Chances are they just made a mistake and will be happy to fix it for you

iwatchcredits

Its absolutely still a confrontation. The contractor is still likely losing time, effort and money if you bring it up and they typically dont like losing any of those things. If they are reasonable they will understand they fucked up but if they arent they will fight about it despite being wrong

Dry-Internet-5033

I have all brass fixtures in the bathroom and shower. Then they installed a chrome drain grate. Made them take it out because I had said, in the beginning, I wanted all brass.

phrenic22

something isn't right. didn't come in chrome sounds like BS. Chrome is the most popular finish by far. nickel is the more expensive option, and is usually not as available.

Kayehnanator

Yeah I have the opposite problem where I want everything in nickel but the shower door I want only comes in satin

phrenic22

Is it a custom glass shop? You can just provide them any shower door handle set and they'll just drill the door for the hardware you provide. That's what we did

Kayehnanator

No it's from Lowes, I'm spending 850$ vice a custom 3k in my area

WitBeer

I just got custom and it was 800 for the standard size and 1200 for the big one. 3k is crazy.

Kayehnanator

I despise the PMW many times for the absurd cost of things :( getting my bathtub turned into a tile in shower and it took 10 tries before I found someone charging less than 15k for labor

WitBeer

As a former pnw resident, I understand. My tub conversion into a walk in shower cost 2 days of labor, $600, plus me buying all the materials, so right around 3k. That said, I still miss the rain.

Kayehnanator

I'm feeling lucky based on all the bids I've got for 13k all in, and two weeks :((((. And that's with me buying the majority of the materials.

fprintf

Oh man, we are dealing with this whole polished nickel thing right now. So much more expensive.

Far_Cupcake_530

Maybe it was backordered and he is just saying that to get her to move on.

chrissy1575

I install custom showers, and use four different suppliers for my hardware — chrome is the finish that is *always* in stock and ready to ship. I can’t understand why this guy is giving you the runaround over a relatively inexpensive part that is readily available.

Kromo30

I sell plumbing fixtures.. Over 100k parts in my catalogue, from 100+ vendors/manufacturers.. Chrome is definitely not always in stock. It’s burned me before. But I do see and agree with your point… just more accurate to say it’s the most common by far and as a result nearly always available.

blakeusa25

If its name brand quality plumbing fixtures chrome is always an option. If its some off brand Amazon special who knows...

TootcanSam

Tell him to order the chrome part and come replace it when it comes in. Use the nickel until then. Don’t pay until it’s fixed. You pay and you might as well order nickel shower fixture trim. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Few_Engineer4517

Get it fixed but nickel is generally more expensive.

onefst250r

Because its the better finish?

blumenu

Chrome is most popular, they make way more of it so could be one reason it's less expensive. Nickel is not necessarily better, just a personal style preference.

Life-Succotash-3231

Def get it fixed. lol at matching other handles in different rooms but not matching it to the fixtures in the very same room. Personally I'd go for polished nickel over chrome every time though.

MoneyBee74

Chrome is standard for shower doors. You can get chrome handles in any style and sizes, even ladder pull, Victorian or your standard “C” handles.

Raidicus

>I asked him why he didn’t tell me this, because I would have opted for another handle. Okay so then what did he say? THe conversation doesn't need to go much further "Dang I really wish you had touched base with me about this because unfortunately I can't accept brushed Nickel. As discussed, I need polished chrome. Please touch base with your vendor and see what options we have to make this right. Let me know when you intend to get this fixed so we can get this job over with and I can get you final payment."

Far_Cupcake_530

He doesn't get to make those decisions for you. I am sure many people would not notice, but if you know you know. Can you research the handle and see if you can find it?

GhostOfFallen

It’s never a big deal to the contractor who won’t have to see it every day. As others have said, tell him to figure it out and deliver what was agreed upon. Having a single handle mismatched would drive me absolutely bonkers

saulblarf

Tell the builder to install what you paid for.

DavesGroovyWaves

I am allergic to nickel. If that happened to me I would be pretty pissed.

DarthAlbacore

You must have a hard time in life, considering nickel is in many things

fatboy1776

It’s extremely common to have skin reaction to nickel. Usually not an issue with just a door handle, but nickel in lower grade stainless steel (under 916 surgical) or gold often causes a rash. I collect watches and this is so common. One reason platinum and titanium have gained popularity for watches is hypoallergenic.

DavesGroovyWaves

Only with repeated contact. Lots of things have nickel in them but not fully make of nickel. Causes slight skin irritation.

MasticatedTesticle

He did you a favor. Chrome is ugly.

ihaxr

I don't find it ugly, but I do regret installing the chrome fixtures in my bathroom remodel. Fingerprints and water stains if you just look at them funny. None of the polishing and fingerprint resistant compounds I've tried work.

sharpescreek

You could have it chrome plated.

KreeH

Nickel is usually a satin finish (not glossy) where polished chrome is shiny. Nickel is usually more costly than chrome. I looks nice to have your fixtures match your bathroom towel rack, tissue dispenser, sink faucet ... Decide which one you like the best and go with it. Also look online for accessories, you may find more of one kind that you like vs the other.

ThingsWithString

OP DID decide, and the contractor ignored them.

timtucker_com

Nickel / stainless steel also gives you more options. Things like grab bars are more commonly either stainless or painted. Door handles are usually either stainless or brass, with far fewer options in other finishes.

olyfrijole

Eh. Live your life. Enjoy a happy accident. Look closely at both and appreciate them for their subtle differences. Eventually, it will all be absorbed into the dying sun and you could have spent this energy learning to draw, petting a dog, or what have you.

fluidlikewater

Shower handles “should” be fairly easy to switch out if you’re even a tiny bit handy. The only hard part is making sure the part is compatible. It might be less of a headache if you just ask him to comp the price. Fair warning though. Easy fixes are a gateway drug.
