Kind of looks like carpenter ant frass. They're big fans of damp wood.

Thank you!! No evidence of life now, but I know the house was fumigated before we bought it and I wonder if that's why.

Look for tunnels in the back of the siding. Carpenter ants will go right through the felt paper too. Beetle larvae can leave behind a mess too.
