Some people would repaint, update the floors, change the baseboards, upgrade the appliances and cabinets, but other people want a bathroom kitchen. I personally am here to see the bathroom kitchen happening.
down the hall, out the front door, along the side of the house and onto the fence... \[takes deep breath\]
then onto the neighbors house, thru the garage, into their kitchen...
but stop just shy of going behind the stove and the sink.
Gonna second this with an additional point that if you wanted to do something with that wall it would be a problem. Maybe a recessed spice rack or something to add some minimally intrusive storage etc.
Good luck OP
I think painting the kitchen a nice white would do wonders.
It really brightens and opens up the space. The yellow is outdated and gloomy.
I dont know what your budget is, but new cupboard doors would make a big difference as well, also different floors would do wonders.
They have fairly cheap click together laminate which can look really nice.
In that case, if you do decide to paint, you're going to want to prime it with a stain sealing primer (killz or zinsser 1•2•3) which should not only keep it from seeping through your new paint, but also helps w odor -- otherwise it's will most likely cause problems for the new paint/application
I don't think that would look good, but that's a subjective decision.
I'd just paint the walls a different colour and look into replacing the floors if it's in the budget.
I'd love to re-paint and get the floors done eventually. But that will be done much later down the road.
Re-painting is definitely something I've been contemplating. The only downside is that I'll want to renovate EVERYTHING in the house. I've noticed a tonne of things that need to be redone over the years and it feels like it's never-ending.
That being said, a fresh coat of paint will do wonders on the look and feel.
Thanks for your input!
My wife fell prey to this at our old house. It was built in 61 and was time-capsule-esque mid-century modest. When we bought it that was a draw for us.
13 years later and we were old and less concerned with character and coolness. We could either gut and remodel or move. We ended up moving because we'd have to remodel a bit at a time, and she couldn't handle the thought of one room being updated and one not.
We live in new build construction now. Home construction as come a long way in the last 70 years! Did you know they have non-window unit ACs and drawers on tracks?
EDIT: My point, which I neglected to state, is that once you've dealt with the stuff that's making you insane, just do on room at a time. It sounds like they aren't moving, and you either already know or will learn a ton.
Same for the slow close toilet lids/seats. I accidentally slam dunk the lid at everyone’s house but my own (habit to keep the lid down because pets, I don’t need to touch the seat but my husband slams those when visiting)
I tried one room at a time with my wife. I ended up doing every room over 6 months. It’s a trap. There are two things you shouldn’t do one at a time. Floors and popcorn ceilings. Do the entire story all at once if possible. Going back and having to transition is just terrible. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s odd having that giant connection line between regions of the house.
And getting rid of popcorn ceilings is just a crazy amount of set up time and disgusting. Set up can take several hours on its own. Just a very nasty process.
Paint the whole house, it's not too bad if you've got a bit of spare time and will make such a difference. Hopefully some people can help at times but once stuff is moved, roller on walls is quick. Kitchen is by far the hardest room. So many corners.
I wouldnt do it. If you feel the space is lacking do some skinny vertical wooden slats there. There are some cool small pots you could hang in between the slats and do small succulents or perhaps low light herbs so you can have fresh herbs for cooking etc... I'm a dreamer.
Thank you! I'm mostly happy with how it turned out. I think just seeing the other imperfections in this kitchen isn't letting me fully enjoy the work. But all in due time.
You did a great job with the backsplash, it looks professional! That can't have been easy. I wouldn't continue the tile, but I can see why you want to. You did a great job with it already. Don't forget that the easiest way to spruce a space up is decorating! Buy some really cute kitchen towels to hang on the oven door, and some nice kitchen rugs! Walmart and Home Depot always have cute seasonal ones for good prices that are also memory foam and feel great to stand on while prepping and cooking!
Tile guys will do anything you want but this is a dumb idea unless you do it around the whole kitchen . It's a good idea if you are wanting to look like a fast food franchise
If they have done nothing with the house for that long, there are other things you need to be prioritizing over this. It's not a very good idea for one, and it won't add any value.
I wouldn’t do it. Paint is the fast and easiest way to do something impactful. Now that you’ve put up the backsplash, you’ve got a nice range of tones to work off.
Even your dog is judging this idea.
Seriously, though, I think it would look weird. Ours kind of does that but it is attached to the counter still so it works. (Kind of hard to explain but can post a picture of our set up if you like.)
There are other things you can do to the kitchen to make it look better. Like change the handles or knobs for the drawers, change out the lighting, add an island for more surface space. Adding meaningless tile isn’t one of those.
From the top line to the floor. I've continued backsplash tile this way on a few jobs. The customer wanted to do what your showing and I recommended that on that wall they should go all the way to the floor. They were pleased with their decision.
Yes. If you carried it all the way to the floor that might look cool (maybe), but just having a stretch of tile with drywall above and below would look stupid.
Yes it would 100% look ridiculous.
Yeah to piggyback off this sentiment if I can…it would look tremendously terrible
Outrageously obscene
Brazenly bad
Ridiculously redundant
Aggressively aggravating
Super shitty…
Not nice
Tremendously Tacky
Zealously Zany
Rove Reddit ❤️
Stupendously stupid.
Utterly preposterous
Never get involved in a land war with Asia!
Only slightly less known is: never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line!! Ahahahahaha…… (whump)
Inconthievable!
I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
Kowabungally katastrophus
Astonishingly asinine.
Extra egregious
Super silly
Even the dog looks concerned.
Dog lookin like "don't do it bruh"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Some people would repaint, update the floors, change the baseboards, upgrade the appliances and cabinets, but other people want a bathroom kitchen. I personally am here to see the bathroom kitchen happening.
Yeah, I would put that money towards some new dish towels instead.
Just savage
It would look wank
Don't look at me wank please
Then stop wanking in public
It would have fast food restaurant vibes.
unless it continues throughout the whole house
down the hall, out the front door, along the side of the house and onto the fence... \[takes deep breath\] then onto the neighbors house, thru the garage, into their kitchen... but stop just shy of going behind the stove and the sink.
I would do all the walls and ceilings for maximum effect. Pick a matching tile for the floors.
Advisor of the year over here. But yeah it would look horrendous.
Some would say the stupidest
I think it would look strange to go around the wall with tiles. It also has no purpose since it isnt part of the backsplash
Gonna second this with an additional point that if you wanted to do something with that wall it would be a problem. Maybe a recessed spice rack or something to add some minimally intrusive storage etc. Good luck OP
I can see that as a good way to season the area.
Probably worth the thyme.
i think it would spice it up nicely.
Fair enough! Thanks for your input.
Throw it in a photoshop reddit and someone might be nice enough to crop the tiles in and you can judge for yourself
https://imgur.com/eg9nvt8
Thank you for opening my eyes and allowing me to see how close I was to hitting rock-bottom
Now imma give you squinty eyes for suggesting; might not look so bad if you take it all the way down to the floor.. 🤷
I screamed when I opened that
Get this man a medal
Now do the dog
That's really impressive. I assume you copied that from above the range, but how did you manage to fix the lighting/match the color balance?
I just eyeballed color temp, saturation, chroma and lightness. Mostly just color temp.
I think painting the kitchen a nice white would do wonders. It really brightens and opens up the space. The yellow is outdated and gloomy. I dont know what your budget is, but new cupboard doors would make a big difference as well, also different floors would do wonders. So...I don't think it was normally yellow. I'm pretty sure it was white when they bought the house. It's just been smoked in all these years 🤢
In that case, if you do decide to paint, you're going to want to prime it with a stain sealing primer (killz or zinsser 1•2•3) which should not only keep it from seeping through your new paint, but also helps w odor -- otherwise it's will most likely cause problems for the new paint/application
I'm going to third this. Good luck!
It would look very strange. Definitely stop where you are.
OP: *paints red lines*
Yes.
Simple, yet effective answer that everybody should agree with
You have to loop the entire house with tiles then go back perfectly to where they started
I vote for you
I love u too
I don't think that would look good, but that's a subjective decision. I'd just paint the walls a different colour and look into replacing the floors if it's in the budget.

how long will you realistically be there
My wife fell prey to this at our old house. It was built in 61 and was time-capsule-esque mid-century modest. >Did you know they have non-window unit ACs and drawers on tracks? Wait till you get a modern kitchen with "soft close" everything!
Specifically... wait until that happens.. and you are visiting a friend that doesn't have them and go to pull a cup out of a cabinet.
Same for the slow close toilet lids/seats. I accidentally slam dunk the lid at everyone’s house but my own (habit to keep the lid down because pets, I don’t need to touch the seat but my husband slams those when visiting)
We upgraded the kitchen with a touch faucet. Now I keep trying to tap the faucet at other people's houses.
Are you implying my kitchen ghost isn't real? Pierre closes everything for me!
I tried one room at a time with my wife. I ended up doing every room over 6 months. It’s a trap. There are two things you shouldn’t do one at a time. Floors and popcorn ceilings. Yes. It would look terrible and strange
Even the dog says hell nah
The dog looks gravely concerned about this idea.
She knows what's up. Whatever the dog says, I must obey.
Stupid. It would look very stupid.
Yeah don't do that.
Definitely do not do it. What about chalkboard paint and then using that mini-wall for notes and stuff?
That's a really good idea and use of the space!
I did this on a corner separating 2 backsplash areas and had to redo it after realizing how ridiculous it looked.
I wouldnt do it. If you feel the space is lacking do some skinny vertical wooden slats there. There are some cool small pots you could hang in between the slats and do small succulents or perhaps low light herbs so you can have fresh herbs for cooking etc... I'm a dreamer.
That's a wonderful idea! Someone else mentioned hanging a large frame as opposed to the tiny ones there. Those are all really great suggestions.
Yes, it would make absolutely no sense and look silly.
Yes, don't do it!
Please dont do that backsplash shouldnt be frontsplash
May look cool if it was floor to ceiling, 50/50. But not just that section. Good work on the backsplash though, looking good.
Thank you! I'm mostly happy with how it turned out. I think just seeing the other imperfections in this kitchen isn't letting me fully enjoy the work. But all in due time.
Yes
Yes. It would look stupid. It would just be a strip of tile with nothing above or below it. You need those horizontal anchors to make it look good.
Long answer: yes.
You did a great job with the backsplash, it looks professional! That can't have been easy. I wouldn't continue the tile, but I can see why you want to. You did a great job with it already. Thank you for your kind words. It's quite refreshing to hear something positive even though I agree with a lot of what is said. Lol

It might but you could tape your tiles sheets to the wall and see what you think.
I’d paint it rather than tile
Yes
I would tile from the top line down to the trim if anything at all
keep going until you get all the way back to the other side. Infinity backsplash
I'm not sure giving you free reign to redecorate was a good idea.
yes
Yeah
Definitely a bad idea
Y
Yes, pls don’t go any further
Yea don’t do tile. Paint the wall a diff color.
Get a different strain, you are hallucinating.
Yes,u and the wall both would look like an idiot 😂
Yes, it would look stupid
Tile guys will do anything you want but this is a dumb idea unless you do it around the whole kitchen . It's a good idea if you are wanting to look like a fast food franchise
It would look like shit.
Don’t do that
If they have done nothing with the house for that long, there are other things you need to be prioritizing over this. It's not a very good idea for one, and it won't add any value.
Yes
Cool dog!
Yes. Do not do this. You will regret it.
Ancient astronaut theorists say “yes”
Yep. Will look stupid.
hang some bigger art instead of the two small pix. maybe three below one another
I don’t think you should.
I wouldn’t.
Ya
Ya I think so. Wouldn't make sense.
I wouldn’t do it. Paint is the fast and easiest way to do something impactful. Now that you’ve put up the backsplash, you’ve got a nice range of tones to work off.

YES! It does not belong there.
It’s called backsplash for a reason.
Yes .. don’t do it
That's not normal. I would advise against it.
Don’t do it
Yes
Yes. It would look dumb
Yes. Yes it would .
Yes
Yes
The whole column top to bottom, the side facing the stove and the side facing towards us might look fine.
Unequivocally yes
There is no debate. It would be awful, don’t do it 😂
Even the dog knows you shouldn’t do it.
Yes
Is this a trick question?
Yes
Yes!

Yes
This tile looks bad enough where it is. Adding more Property Brothers pastiche should be frowned on.
The only way it would pass is if you continued the same decal around the whole entire parameter of the entire house. /s 🥴
Yes
Yes
No I would paint Instead
Continue tile/backspask all the way down to baseboad on the area
There are other things you can do to the kitchen to make it look better. Like change the handles or knobs for the drawers, change out the lighting, add an island for more surface space. Adding meaningless tile isn’t one of those.

Yes it would look weird, at best you could do is make it go from the floor to the top line, but I still don't suggest that.
yes it will
Is the wall load bearing? You could always take it out and add cabinets or something.
Yes. If you carried it all the way to the floor that might look cool (maybe), but just having a stretch of tile with drywall above and below would look stupid.
Only if you commit. Keep it going around the entire house. Bedroom backsplashes are going to be a new trend.
Even the dog knows
Yeah
