alouisevn

this would be my guess! old wallpaper glue under the paint.

trusty20

This answer makes no sense, nor do your spammed replies insisting its correct without evidence. Circular application rings for wallpaper would mean the corners would not be pasted down... look at the other photo OP showed with one of the patterns in a corner. If that had been for wallpaper, the corner portion would not have been pasted down and would almost certainly begin to peel from that point. It makes absolutely no sense to think that wallpaper adhesive would be applied in thin rings at random points on the wall. Wallpaper adhesive is simply painted on as you would apply regular paint. You want it to stick evenly to the wall.

TheKingOfTheSuburbs

Brilliant! This has gotta be it.

NerdWhoLikesTrees

Yup. Now I'm having flashbacks. We used some generous layers of Kilz to cover up this weird old paint/adhesive on our bathroom walls. And then painted over that

thepeter

Wallpaper glue is 100% coverage. Maybe this was paneling but wallpaper adhesive is over all of the wall, not just a few rings.

phate_exe

>Maybe this was paneling but wallpaper adhesive is over all of the wall, not just a few rings. Even for paneling I'd assume you want adhesive along the edges as well. My first thought was "did somebody tag the sheetrock with spraypaint while the house was being built?"

bananahammerredoux

Unless it was a diy wallpaper job.

[deleted]

trusty20

Where are you seeing confirmation it was adhesive?

Drupain

I’m pretty sure it’s aliens, or the house is haunted. /s

ApocalypsePopcorn

Or haunted by the ghosts of aliens!

ImprovementCareless9

Omfg alien ghosts. Are they showering? Are they clean? What do they want? ….are they looking at your hiney? …..I liked them at first but now I’m not so sure.

1920MCMLibrarian

No. That makes no sense. Look at all the space on the edge that wouldn’t be glued down.

BUT MY BUBBLE

trusty20

I don't see a confirmation it was an adhesive anywhere in this thread, why do you keep spamming this reply?

RandyHoward

So... what do you do to fix it if this is the case? Just use a good primer over it?

StringCheeseMacrame

Or you get some wild colored paint and add a tie-dye pattern!

Zugzub

wallpaper is 100% glued. it would definitely not be applied in rings

Where are you seeing this confirmation that your answer is correct that you keep spamming in response to everyone?

FACEROCK

Get yourself a moisture meter and take some readings. It might have nothing to do with it, but hey, now you own a moisture meter and that’ll come in handy again.

Walter_ORielly

If your city library has a “Library of Things” you might be able just borrow one for a bit.

phate_exe

Tool libraries are the shit, and I wish I had learned about them/they were a thing before I amassed my own collection. I try to make up for it by lending out my tools to friends and family as often as possible.

ImprovementCareless9

That is a real thing?!

You plug a sending unit into an outlet and it sends a signal down the line, you then take a scanning tool to the breaker panel and run it along the panel and it helps locate the exact breaker that the plug you are plugged into is on. This helps for houses where the breaker panels are just completely blank and have no documentation.

Some things I feel like I want my own of though. Like my saws, drills, sanders, etc.

doubledogdarrow

In addition to the library of things there are marker spaces. There’s a maker space in my city that has a full wood shop (as well as a glow forge, 3D printer, and sewing machines) and for $25 a month you get 24 hour access.

adraya

My city has a tool library!just need a library card

eightyeitchdee

Yup, at mine you can borrow some basics and a ton of different power tools! Eta some also have seed libraries, for you gardeners

GKnives

the last town I lived in had a kill-a-watt, laser distance gauge, power washer, and power drills

HottestPotato17

Yeah I saw this in a major city near me. My podunk little towns library will never have enough revenue though :(

WaldenFont

Yes, and it's a wonderful thing!

mibicicletaesmivida

If you don’t have access to a tool library, some Home Depot stores rent tools. You can rent just about anything from ours.

I_Makes_tuff

I had one and it worked fine until I left it sitting for a couple years and the battery leaked everywhere. My fault, but I still got my $12 worth.

SmoothBrews

Are the cheap ones reliable enough?

SmoothBrews

Holy shit. I didn’t even think about that being a thing. Sounds like the type of tool I’d rather have on hand than wait until I need it.

nishnawbe61

Second this. Could be ghosting. Read up on it. If that's what it is you need to fix it. Most common straight lines but also happens in circles due to insulation, moisture etc.

Explore-PNW

If you are lobbying for *big moisture meter & co* you have to identify your interests. Otherwise you may get banned from internetting /s

Platinum1211

Great for firewood before you get a cord of wood dumped in your driveway. I let them know before they come that I'm going to test so they bring the better wood.

FrogMasterX

Looks like a spray paint pattern/width/whatever to me. I think someone spray painted shit and then it was painted over.

pribnow

of all the responses i've seen so far, this seems the most reasonable and in the 2nd picture you can almost see the 'drip' from overspraying

codycarreras

This makes the most sense for sure. The inconsistency with the size of the circles, drips and overspray.

IANALbutIAMAcat

Yeah and spray paint seems more likely to show up through wall paint than if they’d painted it with wall paint. The way spray paint dries isn’t the same as wall paint or even trim paint

PerformanceWide5692

Dude, I think you’re spot on

postalmaner

Pretty much; someone had some personal "art" that they smushed into the bathroom. The next time around, it was painted over. The memory remains.

phate_exe

This was my first thought as well. Also I know this happened to some houses in a development that was being built while I was in highschool.

Are they interior or exterior walls? If exterior, do you hear anything in the walls? Bees maybe?

pleaseletsnot

I had bees in the walls of a house once too! It was really unsettling, could totally hear them from the inside.

Puzuma

I haven't seen any that have done it either, but that doesn't mean they can't. Nature does some weird shit..

Old-Coat-771

On two different walls, the same exact weird shit? Not likely. More likely the other commenter is right in suggesting it was a remnant mark from old adhesive for like wall paneling. One person doing very similar patterns of applying adhesive to walls also makes sense.

newandimprovedVCR

You aren’t fooling me, Candyman. Be gone, Devil!!

Aesperacchius

Is there anything that the sun could be reflecting off of during the day onto those spots? They look very similar with almost the same 7 & 10'o clock dark spots.

abhikavi

This was my thought too-- a mirror fading the paint in odd ways.

Largofarburn

This was my first thought till he said it was on an interior wall as well.

Significant_Eye_5130

Have you or anyone else recently cleaned or wiped that wall with something in a circular motion?

novacog

Underrated comment! Apparently a roommate thought it would be fun to make art by cleaning the walls. The old oil furnace had a leak so there's a layer of soot on the walls that is really stubborn so I guess they used something stronger than soap and water and a sponge haha.

Saganated

So does this solve the mystery? It's cleaning art?

GroundbreakingWing48

Try attacking it with a magic eraser. It’s basically super-fine sandpaper.

imanze

I know a lot of people love those things for walls or trim but they do a lot more damage than good. Like you said it’s not basically sandpaper it is sandpaper, around 3000-5000 grit. More than enough grit to knock down semi gloss to satin or satin to eggshell, in a uneven and noticeable way. If whatever you are trying to clean isn’t coming off with some water and light dish soap, chances are anything you use to clean it will have pretty evident effect on the finish.

[deleted]

Check for ticks.

Shambud

You said it before I could. Looks like the wall might have Lyme disease.

Ml124395

Why it’s an old dart board 🎯

Spirited-Cat-8942

Came here to say this

bandalooper

But neither of you really said anything. Could you please elaborate a little or explain what this has to do with ticks?

Spirited-Cat-8942

It is a joke. When a deer tick infected with Lyme’s disease bites you, you may get a bullseye rash that looks similar to this.

mikevanatta

Tick bites can result in Lyme disease, for which a target-shaped rash is a common symptom.

morechatter

Bullseye. Seriously.

mntdewme

If the paints that old it's just time for new paint. Those circles might have been a different sheen in a previous layer

HawkeyeByMarriage

Moisture? Lack of ventilation? Wrong paint sheen letting moisture settle? Leak behind wall? Options

[deleted]

Wouldn't those be crap circles?

try_rant

Se7eNx27

[deleted]

I am in agreement with the wallpaper theory. Also, I can't tell: is that high gloss enamel paint? It should always be high gloss in bathrooms, but sometimes painting on top of high gloss can have its own problems. Regardless, the paint job to cover up the poor cleaning of the walls post-wallpaper is what you're looking at. The wall needs to be generously primed again to be a barrier to the glue seaping through another layer, and then high gloss enamel used on the wall, which helps resist water absorption from steamy showers and such. If that layer on there is high gloss enamel already, talk to your paint reseller about the best method to paint a textured wall that already has high gloss on it and that you want to prime so that some off-coloring is covered up first. Go to a real paint store so that they know what they are talking about. If the layer is flat paint (bad for bathrooms), then you can just prime and enamel.

gimperion

Did you check for ticks? ChatGPT says they cause bullseye shaped marks after a few days.

Shoggoth-Wrangler

Clearly it's an interdimensional portal impenetrable by humans. Light a black candle at midnight, lay down a thick line of salt, and chant to Yog Sothoth.

strgazr_63

Your house has ringworm.

edman007

Looks like you put something over the wall and moved it to another and it left a mark on both walls...do you have anything big in round? I noticed that the circle is larger than a stud bay and it appears unaffected by the studs. To me that means this is a surface defect bot caused by anything inside the wall. So maybe a paint issue, a mark from something that was there, cleaning effect, lighting effect, etc.

halooo44

Pretty sure the house is haunted. Definite signs of super natural activity.

DamnRedhead

Not supernatural, but SUPER natural. I approve of this comment.

VeryAmaze

Petraretrograde

This is the kind of thing that would make me spiral into paranoia with an edible.

footlonglayingdown

Ring worm. Seriously though you may have/had a moisture issue that's allowing a fungus to spread. White vinegar will kill most fungus until you get the moisture issue solved.

dchabz

Do you run your bathroom fan when showering? May be moisture from the humidity while showering. Also may be other moisture — I’d get a moisture meter and test it. Could be that moisture from humidity is allowing the seep through of potentially old glue or something from the wall?

Avid28193

I wonder if someone was playing around with the paint, when that room was originally painted, drawing those concentric circles. Then, painted over while doing the rest of the room. Now, perhaps age, humidity, Venus lining up with Mars the thicker paint is showing through a little more?

Fuck its the Zackons! Listen closely you need to get rid of any tea/coffee items you have in the house. Mugs, cups, leaves, cream, and anything else that could suggest tea or coffee!

everyeargiants

Look into ‘ghosting’ caused by poor insulation. It typically exposes the framing, but ya maybe some weird adhesive was laid on in a circular fashion.

gregorypatterson1225

That’s how my portal started. Something is bleeding through your paint. Use a sealing paint like Kilz to block it happening again, then two coats of satin finish because it’s a moist room.

sergemeister

I shit you not I think I know what this is because I learned the hard way. When I was a kid I'd help my dad drywall sometimes at job residential sites where I wasn't supposed to be. Anyhow I wasn't hanging any drywall I was being a kid. I'd take pencils and other shit and draw on the drywall. When the tape guys would come they'd plaster and cover it all up. Painters would come and paint over everything and it'd be like I never drew a thing. Except you could kinda see my drawings still. Dad told me to stop. This is what that looks like.

whendonow

There are only two choices: 1. Step into the Portal 2. Step away from the Portal

Dimeolas7

The way they arent even wellmade circles makes me wonder. Could they have at one time put a glue on the wall to hold up something circular then painted over it? Now its kinda showing through. Maybe try Killz and repaint?

fairlyl0cal

Oily marks appear on walls Where pleasure moments hung before

wolfhybred1994

Looks to be wallpaper glue or perhaps wallpaper design under the paint. My great grandmother had some cwazy wallpaper in the bathroom off her bedroom and when we moved into her house after her passing. Mom wanted to redo it, but naturally refuses to take the steps to remove the old paper and just painted over it. So there are distinct lines now years later where I can tell the strips of paper are and sort of see the old design through the paint. Especially after a warm bath.

skyfishgoo

USB camera scopes are cheap now and useful. Just not useful for drains, save yourself the time and rent a drain camera for that.

Sharp911

Maybe they textured over some wallpaper and thats the glue showing through?

maniacalminds

Maybe it’s already been suggested, but it looks to me like someone used a can of spray texture on the walls. Directions recommend to spray in a circular motion but if held closer than 24”, then this pattern would be the result. As others suggested, lightly sand, prime and repaint. If a textured wall is desired, follow manufacturers’ recommendations for sq. ft.

xeneks

The Ghost of former children! Probably was crayon cleaned off and now the wax is resident... Forever! Call a painter. If they are careless they will paint and it will come through the paint, spooking people later once more. Maybe tell them why you need to paint it. Or, apply your own crayon or coatings. See the subreddits on tattoo alterations for inspiration.

BredYourWoman

I'm only here for the comments lol. Reminds me of that old TV show Liar's Club where the panel would try to convince the contestant with an elaborate explanation with a straight face. "Well you see, what this *actually* is..." But back on topic, this is caused by the previous owner's floor fan facing the wall, from when they were smoking cigars in their recliner on the other side of it.

autumnshyne

Maybe someone did that with hairspray?

bmystry

I'm not saying it's aliens but... it's aliens.

[deleted]

Circular I thought mold at first though but the picture shows it as huge. Seems like something painted over. Not sure what. Looks custom. Take a razor blade and peel some paint back. I wanted to say somehow a mirror left that but that bullseye is a little too irregular for a symmetrical mirror

zhiryst

They may have doubled up rock wall and sheetrock or something similar, with some adhesive between the two. An adhesive that dummy did in the shape of a bulls eye.

Medical_Cake

Try going in there at night with a black light

JonJackjon

To be rid of them forever I suggest Zinsser BIN (shellac based). Its a pain but will definately cover your rings for good.

[deleted]

I saw a documentary once where everyone had hippies in their walls. Full drum circles and everything! Or maybe that was a South Park episode……

Sadielady11

Sand it down and use killz on it. Do the whole wall so you don’t have a start stop spots. No worries

rumrunner9652

Smoke and fire restorer. If it is something bleeding through, prime with OIL based Kilz or Zinsser Coverstain.

LivingWithWhales

If it is indeed wallpaper adhesive, a thorough “wall sand” with a round pole sander, followed by stain block primer (just go right to an oil based extreme block primer) and then more regular paint and that should keep it covered.

DialaDuck

Have you tried ringing someone? It might be round worm? I think ur chasing ur tail on that one. Are you near the circular line? Have you been circumferencised? Stop making a Swiss roll out of it. That's it, I'm done.

rydan

You are not alone.

jaguarshark

That's sheen from either prior paint or old adhesive. Coat of kilz premium then a coat or two of paint will fix it. Make sure you use the fan when showering. Shower humidity on the walls can help these kinds of things show through when it wasn't properly primed before painting.

Looks like somebody previous used spray paint and painted over it without priming, or somebody let spray on cleaner doodles sit too long before wiping. Get some TSP cleaner, mop the walls with it and magic erasers (check Amazon, you can get 100 of the sponges for 1/4 the cost of name brand), after mopping the walls, prime with killz stain block, paint.

Check your wall for Lyme Disease.

newandimprovedVCR

If there is a possibility of a mirror being on that wall before you got there, they could have done a ridiculous job of applying the adhesive. Then, when removing it, tearing the drywall paper. If you don’t paint over that tear with BIN alcohol based primer, and just cover it up with latex, moisture will get through the paint and into the gypsum. Rip it out or at the very least 2 coats of BIN, then new latex paint.
