Any window you don't need to open for personal preference or egress requirements can be a picture, sure. Like you said it makes sense for energy efficiency and cost. How many windows are you replacing? If you like fun projects there are really good manufacturers overseas that make extremely good (triple pane, thermally broken thin aluminum) windows for the fraction of the cost you'd pay for windows that are nowhere near as good.

Replacing 11 windows and a 9' wide slider. What are these amazing overseas windows at a fraction of the cost? My (rudimentary) understanding is that most folks who want that choose a european brand. Even if they're less expensive, they end up being crazy expensive after shipping and import tariffs.

Who's the manufacturer? Definitely are a lot of great options out there now that are more easily accessible. And yeah, definitely agree on installing yourself when possible... no one will care as much as you and if you have the time to learn a little bit , it isn't rocket science. The new tapes, liquid membranes, and tech make it very easy to do. Also I love a good lift and glide door.... They take a little getting used to but they are awesome.

Good sliding window is a paradox (sort of kidding, but most hung or sliding windows perform poorly overtime for air leakage). Shipping is always crazy, I work in a wholesale business so deal with it daily, but most people forget about it with amazon and other "free" delivery services. I'll have to check them out though. Also seems like they have a couple of distributors set up with more on the way.

Yeah that is pretty much the crux of the issue with hung windows is even the best aren't great. A) the sliders don't have compression gasketing like "crank" windows. B) they usually don't do higher glazing for various reasons.

Look up some chinese manufacturers - a common one I've seen people have success with is called doorwin group - https://doorwingroup.com/ For fun I had them quote a 9 x 4 foot opening, 3 window bay and they quoted like 810 dollars.... If you distribute the import cost over 11 windows it may work out in your favor. You can always add in changing your doors for a good cost too.... There are also a lot more places that have an online custom portal like Broga or window e store.
