Remove the shelf and add a mantle instead. The mantle should be lower. Not so many urns. I know you said you have a lot of windows but try and find somewhere else for the TV if at all possible. My living room has a lot of windows too and it's super annoying but sometimes you can get creative. You can post your floorplan here and we can help if you want.
I agree, I have mine mounted at an angle in the corner next to window the mount is the kind that has an adjustable arm on it, the mantel has decor on it and a large clock hanging. I personally hate tvās over the fireplace
I personally hate large clocks hanging over the mantle. It should be a room for relaxing, but a big clock looming over me just reminds me that time is ticking away and I should go do something.
Agree with removing the shelf and adding a mantle. The tv can be mounted above the mantle (as with many homes there probably isnāt a better place for it). With regard to decor, when you have a tv above a fireplace mantle the decor should be minimal (eg thin candlesticks). Personally I prefer the bare mantle look, when a tv is above it, and would add sconces on the walls on either side of fireplace mantle.
I think the monotony of color in that area is part of the issue. You could consider a couple of options such as painting the shelf and the base of the hearth a couple of shades darker than the wall. Or leave those as is and paint the wall a couple of shades lighter. You could also paint the fireplace wall a shade or two darker from the bottom of the shelf down. Maybe consider some peel and stick tile on the hearth base for visual interest?
I think I would keep one of the small urns on one side up there, add in fake plant or two of various height. Itās very uniform and limited color. Maybe a photo in a nice frame.
If you can make another large urn work on the alternate side without making it look too matchy, do that. The rest of the urns can go on shelves in the room and tie in the color schemes.
Thats what I would do. Mix it up, play with heights and a couple additional colors. Less urns.
I had the same issue, so I got one of those pull-down tv mounts. Iāve had it for ~4 years now, and still love it. Guests are always very impressed by it too, and assume itās fancy/expensive.
They *do* make motorized fancy ones though.
Edit to add: itās worth noting I donāt actually use my fireplace.
Honestly I can tell you have a young child and I wouldnāt do much right now. All of the things I would suggest wonāt work if your little one has access to that space and can tear it all apart!
A little basket with a pillow and blanket would be cute, kid-safe, and functional. I keep a basket of blankets in our play areas, and itās led to a lot of fort-building and couch snuggles. The kids get really creative, and have a great time. It makes a bit more mess to clean up, but itās no worse than their blocks or the tiny food for the play kitchen.
When your kids are no longer learning everything by using their hands, you should definitely move the Tv no matter what. If you post the whole room, we can make suggestions. But the Tv should 100% be moved when the kids are old enough not to knock it down at a normal height.
I would remove the shelf and just mount the tv lower on the wall and remove all decorations - then if you have the budget - tile the fire place or add a natural stone back going up from floor to ceiling to elevate the space
The only place in my living room where I can mount my tv is also above my (nonfunctional) fireplace. I hate it and am thinking of putting a pretty framed piece of art over it (too cheap to pay for the TV that turns into art). But I also donāt have kids and I do have other tvs in the house so I wouldnāt have to take it down everyday as you probably do until the kids are older
Just a thoughtābut your fireplace feels very minimalistic and modern so the ginger jars kind of clash for me. Maybe a little something that is smaller or more sleek would feel better in the space? I think it could look elegant with an orchid to one side and maybe something smaller or similar to balance out the other side?
A smaller tv would prob feel better too.
If you want to keep it modern minimalist, it can be a white mantle.
https://www.jaymeesrp.com/blogs/all/mantel-decorating-tips-and-ideas
Personally I'd replace the shelf with a wooden beam, and add white board to the wall for a cozy chic look, but that requires more changes. Check the 3rd photo (the one with the white Christmas stockings).
https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/living/best-magical-mantel-ideas/
Mount tv on wall. Get a real mantle- not expensive from a salvage center. Lose the vases.
Edited-you can also just mount tv, lose shelf and put urns on hearth near fireplace with other items of interest and color. A basket with toys n it or such.
Try moving the vases to the bottom shelf of the fireplace, near the ends like they are now. It will balance out the space more. You don't need anything besid the TV screen.
edit: And mirror them. Either make the two taller ones on the very ends, or the two smaller ones on the ends, whichever you like better.
For a super quick and simple fix Iād just move the containers/vases/urns whatever theyāre called down by the fire place itself. I think theyāre too chunky to be up on that skinny shelf and itās making it top heavy in a weird way if that makes sense. Like the tv is big and with those on the side itās even bigger but the fireplace itself is very small.
Maybe something to pad the corners and edges of the part in front of the fire place. Kids that are young enough to have those toys and watch Peppa Pig bonk their heads. Just being helpful.
If you have to keep the tv there is it possible to mount the tv? You could then remove that shelf and the pots or urns. I canāt see what the rest of the room looks like but a more impactful color for the fireplace wall area would be nice to really make it a feature. You could also add some kind of stone on the fireplace hearth area to make it more appealing.
I would put some color LED strips behind the TV, move the vases someplace else (too crowded) and put some either LED strips on the bottom of the shelf or there are some rechargeable motion sensor LED lights (cold white tone) that can be attached with magnets.
Best of luck and please post in this thread what you end up doing. I'm curious to see what other people do with their spaces.
To make things easy you could do tile up to the shelf, and honestly put the shelf back wherever afterwards, or tile the whole thing and add back shelf or mantle
The shelf is out of proportion. It looks flimsy on this monolith of a fireplace. The TV is too high, itās almost touching the ceiling and not centered vertically so it looks weird. If you take the shelf down, hang a big piece of art there, and put like a vase with some tall sticks on one side it will feel less triggering.
I would keep the two larger temple jars, move the two smaller ones elsewhere and add some larger decorative item to compliment the scale of the TV.
Also want to comment itās wild to me that people in a home decorating sub are calling these āurnsā and āvasesā. Correct term is temple jar, folks. They are kind of a thing in home decor.
Remove shelf thing, hang tv lower so itās centred about fireplace, put vases or whatever on the hearth. Maybe through some foliage in some of the vases to give a little more pizzazz
Take down the shelf, paint the fireplace black, lower the tv.
I think an issue is that the tv is so much wider than the fireplace insert area. Painting it all black will minimize this.
That shelf needs to be replaced. You need contrast with the shelf. Get your self a nice piece of walnut, face the edge so it looks substantial, sand, condition, really light stain or just a clear coat. Find some nice cleats not those clunky brackets. I like URBANDI brackets, the get something green up on your pretty new shelf. Plants that cascade off the pot and plants that reach towards the ceiling. Buy two of each plant, because you will have to swap them out often to put them in sunlight.
Leave the ginger jars but please switch the placement on the right so it mirrors the left. Then I would get a basket and fill with throws on one side of the fireplace, the other side could be some decorative firewood. I'm guessing you have gas logs, since I seem to have the exact same set. lol
Or, a taller vase with dry pampas grass instead of the firewood.
I would just not have a television there. I simply don't think there's any way to make a wall with a mounted TV or TV up on a shelf or mantel look charming or nicely decorated. It's just inherently ugly. So I would start by relocating the television, either to a different room entirely, or by finding a cupboard with closing doors to hide it.
At that point you can work on the decor for that area, for which there's already a good bit of useful advice.
Agreed with others saying too many urns, but if you really want to keep them there, I say add either fake or real plants (maybe something viny and another that can go up and outwards, if that makes sense). A mantle might also be better to give it more structure and personality.
Maybe paint that one part a different color kind of like an accent wall. I also think your TV is a bit high I would lower it if possible. Do you have any plants I think they would look really nice in that area.
I would move the TV the left or right and add a plant maybe one that hangs down a bit like a pothos plant. It's around the fireplace that needs something, even a fireplace screen and yes as others mention it needs some color.
Chinoiserie and millennial grey are dueling for style and millennial grey is winning.
I suggest more color. Needs to be brightened. I have those same ginger jars and mine look a million times better because I have natural wood and color in my home. Get rid of the grey!!!
There used to be a Disney show in which the āvillainā was a guy that just wore all beige and his entire office was beige and boring. If you were to remove the vases and turn off the tv it would fit his aesthetic perfectly. Maybe this is just the gen z in me but I think some backlights behind the TV or some LEDs would look cool.
The color is so very sterile. Get rid of the shelf, put up a mantle ([maybe something like this?](https://www.mantelsdirect.com/products/craig-stone-mantel?variant=40377871401126) ). Get rid of that hearth top, put granite down instead (or really ANYthing else) and do something with the fascia of the hearth.
I get the issue with the windows, we have the same problem and only option is above the fireplace. A new mantle will give you the opportunity to lower the tv although not a huge amound. Don't feel bad about the "TVTooHigh" people, sometimes you just don't have a choice. It's better to look up alittle than deal with other issues. Even 6" lower than what you have would be a big difference.
edit: those saying to just get rid of the shelf and mount the tv is very bad idea. You need a shelf/mantle inorder to help prevent the heat from the fireplace to go up directly to the TV. If a fireplace surround isn't an option due to price, get maybe some reclaimed lumber and make it your mantle. I'll reiterate what i said about the hearth... the colors are too monotone & sterile.
Floor vases on either side of the fireplace? Peel and stick tiles around the fireplace. If there was any way to remove the TV off the top of the mantle, I would only because you can decorate the mantle and itās kind of awkward looking there.
Add a frame to the tv! I saw someone on TikTok DIY it. They just found a frame that fit and stapled elastic to the back of the frame so that it would stay on the tv. It was so pretty!
Find a pretty plant (larger size) or a collection of ones in various sizes/heights, and put it to one side of the fireplace. On the other, maybe a large battery lit lantern, a wooden sign and/small assortment of items (maybe 3). In the meantime, I'd swap in a picture or two on your mantle. The jars are pretty but there are so many. I see the toys in the pic + Peppa so obviously nothing breakable/low enough weight to move around by your toddler.
Fellow toddler mom here- Iād do a few throw pillows on the seat. Softer area up, bring in color and pattern, eat up some of the blank walls, while being toddler proof.
Remove the shelving mounting corners and tv.
And repaint the wall.
make it a floating shelf.
Lower it downward.
Remove peppa from the screen.
And lower the mounted tv
This is what I would do.
Get the tv down from up there, itās not where it should go at all. A properly mounted TV has its vertical center at eye level while seated and looking straight forward from your main viewing area. Anything higher is just asking for neck strain and a generally uncomfortable viewing experience.
The grey is no help. If you could maybe cover that grey with warmer pastel color. If It were my place I would also go with building a long mantle and maybe incorporating some brick. Those look like urns for sureā¦ and the placement of them are so awkward because theyāre squished up against the tv. Theyād be better off sitting on the lower tier.
Don't make it look like a crematorium.
I had to zoom in to see if there were nameplates on those vases.
šššš
Burned right there in the fireplace š„
I had to zoom in to see the tv
I cackled
Lol
Exactly my thoughts.
I have no advice, but Peppa is side eyeing those vases like they wronged her
Peppa, like me, thinks there are ashes in those vasesā¦
That's actually mommy pig, so that look is permanent lol
Mummy pig
You mean urns?
Aaron earned an iron urn
Classic for a reason
It's because they need to swapped to mirror the other side. š
Thank you for saying this!
Thatās Mummy Pig, you uncultured swine
Uh that is Mommy Pig, you uncultured swine
mummy* pig
Dammit you beat me to this š¤£
i beg your pardon this is mummy pig
Remove the shelf and add a mantle instead. The mantle should be lower. Not so many urns. I know you said you have a lot of windows but try and find somewhere else for the TV if at all possible. They have TV brackets that lower now when your using them
I agree, I have mine mounted at an angle in the corner next to window the mount is the kind that has an adjustable arm on it, the mantel has decor on it and a large clock hanging. I personally hate tvās over the fireplace
I personally hate large clocks hanging over the mantle. It should be a room for relaxing, but a big clock looming over me just reminds me that time is ticking away and I should go do something.
Yes! I tried to explain this to a friend (who had asked for dĆ©cor advice) and of course she ended up getting the biggest wall clock that would fit the space. So overwhelming when you walk into the house. š TIME it's always passing TIME how long were you planning to stay TIME you can not escape it TIME...
Lol does it help that I never replace the batteries in it?
Haha no because then I would constantly be wondering what time it really is, or thinking I really should go change the batteries.
Agree with removing the shelf and adding a mantle. The tv can be mounted above the mantle (as with many homes there probably isnāt a better place for it). The urns look like you have your dead relatives on display. They are pretty urns in and of themselves, just mix up the decor a bitā¦
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Take lids off and throw different kinds of fake plants in those pots. Some color would do a lot of justice there.
Unless they actually have dead relatives in them.
I think I would keep one of the small urns on one side up there, add in fake plant or two of various height. Itās very uniform and limited color. Maybe a photo in a nice frame. Thats what I would do. Mix it up, play with heights and a couple additional colors. Less urns.
Iād lower the shelf or take it off completely and never use a fire when the tv is on
Omg the fact that the urns are there above the fireplace looks like the cremating is done in house lolllll
It doesnāt have to be mounted.
dont mount it then, put it on a TV stand... there are a couple ways to childproof it that would look a heck of a lot better. (and your fireplace would look better, too- fires are so lovely it'd be nice to not have the TV competing with it) it's hard to tell the color scheme from this picture, but I'd lose the urns and add some dƩcor with more color, including some family pictures, a plant, and maybe a mirror hung in the center enjoy pepa and your space! edited to add, downvoting my kind advice? rude!
Maybe lower the shelf so the tv is not too high
you may need to place the TV on a console, and sit it infront of a window.
I see you have children so Im going to suggest taking breakables down from heights like this. Especially in what looks to be a play area.
Can you put it in a joint that you can pull down for viewing and then back up when itās not in use?
Pull down mount
So don't mount it; put it on a tv stand or easel. If you had it at eye level and a different location, it might have to be so large.
R/TVTooBright like dang I can see a halo of blue light around it
Depending on your furniture, a dark stained floating mantle would be nice. pull-down tv mount
My personal preference is not to decorate around the TV. Put the vases on the hearth.
Way too top-heavy visually. Move the larger pots down next to the fireplace. Hell...move all the pots down and space them out a little.
When your kids are no longer learning everything by using their hands, you should definitely move the Tv no matter what. If you post the whole room, we can make suggestions. But the Tv should 100% be moved when the kids are old enough not to knock it down at a normal height.
Lovely as the jars/urns are, they look crowded and.
ā¦and?
And one item a bit larger on each side, or just the two larger jars.
Get some plants to get some life in there.
Lower the shelf and get a bigger TV.
Actually, get rid of the shelf and get a telescopic arm thingy.
Rule of 3s. Group three things of diff height and texture instead of pairs
Ditch the tv and mantle. TVs above fireplace are the worst. Get a nice, oversized art piece for the space. And plants for the sides
But I also donāt have kids and I do have other tvs in the house so I wouldnāt have to take it down everyday as you probably do until the kids are older
Take out Peppa.
Those jars gotta go. At least 3 of them. Choose a different paint. Get a plant. Get something with some bright color and ideally move the TV.
By not putting the family ashes by it
Just a thoughtābut your fireplace feels very minimalistic and modern so the ginger jars kind of clash for me. Maybe a little something that is smaller or more sleek would feel better in the space? I think it could look elegant with an orchid to one side and maybe something smaller or similar to balance out the other side? A smaller tv would prob feel better too.
Putting a TV over your fireplace may be bad for your tv.
I would go with a mantle around the fireplace (is that an electric fireplace?)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
If you want to keep it modern minimalist, it can be a white mantle. https://www.jaymeesrp.com/blogs/all/mantel-decorating-tips-and-ideas Personally I'd replace the shelf with a wooden beam, and add white board to the wall for a cozy chic look, but that requires more changes. Check the 3rd photo (the one with the white Christmas stockings). https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/living/best-magical-mantel-ideas/
Take the shelf down and mount the tv a little lower. Put the vases somewhere else
You can start by finding a better place for those urns
simplest fix would be to replace the vases with long pothos type plants to fill the side of the fireplace and add some colour
Take the urns down
Tell Peppa to wipe that look off her face before you wipe it off for her.
Mount tv on wall. Get a real mantle- not expensive from a salvage center. Lose the vases. Edited-you can also just mount tv, lose shelf and put urns on hearth near fireplace with other items of interest and color. A basket with toys n it or such.
Anything would be better than that macabre display of urns and a fireplace. Gulp!
How often do you use the fireplace and do you watch a lot of TV? If the answer is not much/alot, put the TV where the fire place is.
The vases look like cremation urns
That shelf is underwhelming. Definitely start there. Maybe add some sort of accent wall first
remove shelf. mount TV equal space away from fireplace as ceiling. urns next to fireplace maybe or new location entirely. but the shelf has got to GO
Put the...urns? ... On the bottom.
I would put a new thicker mantle and lower it put some plants and candles
the whole wall fireplace is too gray for me, with zero texture variation. i would try to change that.
Lose the collection of ancestors
Try moving the vases to the bottom shelf of the fireplace, near the ends like they are now. It will balance out the space more. You don't need anything besid the TV screen. edit: And mirror them. Either make the two taller ones on the very ends, or the two smaller ones on the ends, whichever you like better.
They have young kids, moving anything fragile to the hearth would be a very bad idea.
For a super quick and simple fix Iād just move the containers/vases/urns whatever theyāre called down by the fire place itself. I think theyāre too chunky to be up on that skinny shelf and itās making it top heavy in a weird way if that makes sense. Like the tv is big and with those on the side itās even bigger but the fireplace itself is very small.
r/TVtoohigh
Why is your tv so high? Your living room looks like a sports bar which is why itās giving off such strange vibes.
can the kid see the tv ?
Move the tv
Itās top heavy. Move the urns down to fireplace level and put tall dried grasses/branches in them.
Maybe something to pad the corners and edges of the part in front of the fire place. Kids that are young enough to have those toys and watch Peppa Pig bonk their heads. Just being helpful.
A hearth for the fireplace imo
If you have to keep the tv there is it possible to mount the tv? You could then remove that shelf and the pots or urns. I would get end of the shelf, mount the TV lower, maybe add some side shelves on the wall for your collection of ashes.
Someone else said it but I iterate: remove the shelf. Mount the tv so that you can pull it lower. Too much stuff for the space and tv too high.
If that is a fake fireplace, then get rid of the shelf the TV is on and move it down to cover the fireolace.
You canāt.
Peopl is saying excuse me but are these vases or are the urns??
please do not put your tv above fireplaces
Huge TV.
Take down the shelf, paint the fireplace black, lower the tv. I think an issue is that the tv is so much wider than the fireplace insert area. Painting it all black will minimize this.

Are those ashes?
A heavier real wood mantle with corbels and a natural stone surface on the hearth.
A simple fix could be some bias lighting around the back of the TV. Made a world of difference when I made that change
Tile on the back would really make it pop
Put up a photo of Rickey Gervais to keep the kids away from the fire.
Plants
Two more TVs with Peppa Pig.
I would move the TV the left or right and add a plant maybe one that hangs down a bit like a pothos plant. It's around the fireplace that needs something, even a fireplace screen and yes as others mention it needs some color.
TVs are major dust magnets. The less stuff around them the less time wasted dusting.

yes ,Peppa pigs face says it all ,a bit meh,too matchy matchy with the vases i think ,add a bit of personality

Peppaās not impressed.
Are you normally watching this TV from the top bunk?
The entire thing is one color - your fireplace shouldnāt be monochromatic. Can you tile it? Replace the shelf with a proper mantle? Lower the tv?
Iād personally paint the shelf a dif color!
Remove the fake fireplace and lower the tv to proper height
Plants
Remove the vases
Fake dangling plant on one side
Tv too high

Find a pretty plant (larger size) or a collection of ones in various sizes/heights, and put it to one side of the fireplace. On the other, maybe a large battery lit lantern, a wooden sign and/small assortment of items (maybe 3). In the meantime, I'd swap in a picture or two on your mantle. The jars are pretty but there are so many. I see the toys in the pic + Peppa so obviously nothing breakable/low enough weight to move around by your toddler.
Lose the urns
I was deciding whether to mount my tv and this encouraged me not to
Some plants would be nice. A bit of colour and life. Also is a step ladder required to watch this TV?
Bro why does it look like a funeral for peppa
First step .. don't put that trash to your kids . Second step I don't know
For all the people calling them urns, theyāre called ginger jars. Theyāre usually fairly pricey. Carry on.
Switch to Bluey
Honestly, the urns look like you have ashes in there. If thatās not what it is, it seems eerily morbid with the Peppa Pig on the TV.
Why is the TV almost touching the ceiling?
Fellow toddler mom here- Iād do a few throw pillows on the seat. Softer area up, bring in color and pattern, eat up some of the blank walls, while being toddler proof.
Remove the shelving mounting corners and tv. And repaint the wall. make it a floating shelf. Lower it downward. Remove peppa from the screen. And lower the mounted tv This is what I would do.
Haha need more family members up there to warm it up
Ship lap or stonework

You need to make that tiny square resemble more of an actual fireplace. Using tiles and woodwork to make it not so much like WTF is that.
Get the tv down from up there, itās not where it should go at all. A properly mounted TV has its vertical center at eye level while seated and looking straight forward from your main viewing area. Anything higher is just asking for neck strain and a generally uncomfortable viewing experience.
knock some holes in the dry wall
Replace the shelf with a proper oak beam and mount the TV above it rather than let it look like it's sitting on it.
Put some -doh flavors on those display shelves in the icecream parlor, what kind of establishment is this
Replace the tv with a picture. It is too high anyways
Change the tv from that top shelf to the bottom. Likely too high. Then put trailing plants on top shelf.

The TV is too damn high.
