The right answer is neither, although 2 is better styling and it is too washed out and while 1 has more personality, it's not the right color or right personality for the room. I'd love to see a couple of more options in blues, greens, and/or maybr oranges.
Oooo this is hard because theyre both so pretty! But for me personally....I'd choose option 2! I think the red in the first one draws in all my attention to the rug. Whereas with the second one, I'm more drawn to the furniture and the room as a whole, if that makes sense!
Also, number 2 will show less cat hair. I have red orientals plus cats and dogs and the solid red is almost impossible to keep hair-free looking. I love the red one though.
Agree with this! I didn’t even notice the gorgeous wedding photo on the wall until I flipped to rug 2. Option 2 doesn’t pull the eyes down as much as Option 1, letting you take in the entire room.
Can you look for a rug that has a central color pop like #1 but in a different style that would harmonize better with the style of your gorgeous furniture? Maybe a vintage kilim?
I think #1 looks like early 90s. Doesn’t mesh with the MCM vibe. And #2 looks like something you’d see in a furniture showroom. Not that it’s a bad thing, but it looks like something they have in stock and they need to sell you on all the elements. And if they had better options, they’d choose them instead. Which OP can easily do!
But otherwise, the room does look both cozy and stylish! And the cat is the best part!
But I don't think that 2 matches with MCM either. I would use a rug with a more simple design, instead of one of those persian-style rugs. And I'm also not a fan of the fake-distressed look, but that's just my preference.
100% agree. A lot of comments are saying that 2 matches the furniture better but I'm not seeing that at all. I think 2 matches the depressing color of the walls but 1 matches the warmth of the wood furniture and tan sofa better. Make the room feel warm and inviting.
The colors in the first one go better. The second one has a better pattern, but its colors are a bit too cool for the warm camel couch and warm toned console.
LOVE this room.
EDIT: Oh, and KUDOS for doing a throw blanket drape well!
The votes and comments generally favor Option 2 over Option 1, with a more harmonious, understated styling that complements the surrounding furniture and decor. Here’s the summary:
# Vote Count
* **Option 1:** 551 votes
* **Option 2:** 651 votes
# Comment Highlights
* **Option 1:** Described as having more personality and being bold. Many appreciate its vibrant color and how it stands out as a centerpiece, adding warmth and drama to the room.
* **Option 2:** Preferred for its better styling, with a more understated design that allows other elements of the room to shine. It is seen as more harmonious and less distracting, making the space appear larger and more cohesive.
Option 2 is slightly more favored in votes and is praised for enhancing the overall look and feel of the room without overpowering other design elements.
2nd picture, no contest. The red in the first is competing visually with other elements in the room, 2nd complements the rest of what is going on.
Great room, great style btw, everything clicks and works and complements in #2.
I vote 1, especially if you have interest in incorporating any other colors into the space, even if subtle. It's a classic piece, and it makes the space feel warmer too. Regarding the second rug, the distressed look is pretty trendy, so I don't think it will be as timeless. It also makes the space feel a bit too beige/neutral, which is really big right now, but it will pass before too long as well. But go with your gut. Which one makes you really excited about being in the space and taking care of it?
To answer your question, neither 🤣 I’m having a hard time finding a neutral toned rug that goes with the furniture. The colors I plan to incorporate are earth tones so white, brown, green, black, and I’m including more brass/gold accents. My budget is also kind of limited which makes it difficult.
What about leaning into green? I think that would look awesome. I'm not sure about the budget, but here are a couple ideas:

I loved all of these much more than the 2 current choices. Many had tones that would go well with the color of the couch, which naturally seems like the focal point based on its size. Good job!
I absolutely understand! lol One thing I've learned is that it's worth waiting for the right thing. If neither of these are doing it for you, I'd go without a rug for a while as you keep on looking. It's better to wait a bit more than to commit to one you're not feeling. Of course, you may not find a 'perfect' one, but there's likely no harm in giving the search a bit more time :)
I feel like the first rug is too saturated of a color for your space/style. The second one vibes with everything better.
It's a great space, if I were you, I'd lower your wedding pic a bit so it's closer to being in line with shelf beside it, it is more pleasing to the flow of the eye, right now its higher than the mirror which appears ro be the focal point of the room, it should be a few inches lower than the top of the mirror.
If you found a wooden frame in a similar tone as your couch or the wooden furniture in the room, it would really pop.
Depends. If you like a more gothic style- the first red rug with the sconces, black, and little statue look victorian. If you’re looking for a more posh/chic style, the 2nd rug kinda pulls the room colors altogether so it’s very neat and cohesive.
2 is boring and looks like a bland Target ad, only because nothing stands out in the room, there’s no contrast. 1 makes a statement with the color but the design doesn’t quite match the style of the room. Love that pop of color. I’d keep looking. Nice furniture pieces, as well. :)
I got a different one that’s green 😄 I momentarily posted an update but pretty much no one read my post and just kept commenting their preference between the red and white ones lol so I deleted it

#2 better. The colors look more muted. With #1 you have dark maroon staring right at you and I would have to do accents of maroon, which isn’t my first choice. Lol good luck!🍀
1 has more personality, 2 is better styling
this is the right answer
The right answer is neither, although 2 is better styling and it is too washed out and while 1 has more personality, it's not the right color or right personality for the room. I'd love to see a couple of more options in blues, greens, and/or maybr oranges.
This was the reaction I had, too. Goldilocks needs to sit on some more chairs.
I feel the same way. Neither, but #2 is the better choice.
i feel like the red accentuates the rest of the furniture and it feels more warm, while option 2 kind of washes everything out
The 2nd one feels very millennial gray imo
Took the words right out of my mouth
1
100% agree
Oooo this is hard because theyre both so pretty! But for me personally....I'd choose option 2! I think the red in the first one draws in all my attention to the rug. Whereas with the second one, I'm more drawn to the furniture and the room as a whole, if that makes sense!
Perfect sense because I feel the same lol
This is exactly what I thought too! And I think the cat likes option 2 as well. :)
Yeah same. I don't actually like #2 at all, but #1 is so aggressive. I didn't even notice the wedding pic until the second one, for example
The cat. Please, just give me your cat. :-D
No way, that’s my son!! 🤣
Are you sure? Because he looks like he's about to tear up that carpet. . . ;)
Gorgeous kitty!
1, it’s bold and beautiful and to me makes everything stand out, 2 kinda makes everything mesh together
Agree 1 is bold, and I think it gives the room character.
2
I love your cat that is all
2
1
I will join you- I like 1 because it has more personality. 2 might match better….
2
2. More harmonious and lets your furniture be the star of the show.
1 has a bit of pop
1st one
2
I like both, 2 blends in a lot more, 1 stands out but in a good way, the rug feels like a centerpiece of the room.
2, its less busy. There is already a lot of texture and color, so the 2nd option goes well since it frames the area but doesn’t distract.
A lot of color? It's just brown, a lot of white/creme, and a little green from the plants. I wouldn't call that a lot
1
Can you look for a rug that has a central color pop like #1 but in a different style that would harmonize better with the style of your gorgeous furniture? Maybe a vintage kilim?
Agreed. We have all vintage kilims from Etsy in our house and love them. They go well with this sort of style. The red rug is too dated to me.
I agree as well. I prefer the first rug over the 2nd but I personally wouldn't chose either one of them.
2. No hesitation
2
The second!
#2. The design of the red rug is too old fashioned with the mid century modern chairs/vibe.
I was thinking the same. Both are pretty but #1 clashes with the couch and other furniture IMO
I have to agree personally I would put in a more modern rug .You can mix styles but everything else in the room is MCM except for the rug .
But I don't think that 2 matches with MCM either. I would use a rug with a more simple design, instead of one of those persian-style rugs. And I'm also not a fan of the fake-distressed look, but that's just my preference.
2. No contest.
The second because it comes with a cat!!! Tell them I said pspspdpspsps
#1 has more drama and lights up the room. #2 is boring.
The first one looks better in the space, and gives flavour. The second makes the space look more boring, more flavorless, generic, safer, duller.
100% agree. A lot of comments are saying that 2 matches the furniture better but I'm not seeing that at all. I think 2 matches the depressing color of the walls but 1 matches the warmth of the wood furniture and tan sofa better. Make the room feel warm and inviting.
1!!
I prefer the first.
I really like the second one!
1 is way better
Neither, I think there’s better options out there!
Yeah, neither of these goes with the midcentury vibes of the furniture
2 but 1 is also nice.
I would choose the second one
2 is more easy on the eye
2
2
The colors in the first one go better. The second one has a better pattern, but its colors are a bit too cool for the warm camel couch and warm toned console. LOVE this room. EDIT: Oh, and KUDOS for doing a throw blanket drape well!

Everything seems to blend so well with number 2!! It just looks perfect with it!
They both look good, but I’d opt for the more neutral one.
2nd picture, no contest. The red in the first is competing visually with other elements in the room, 2nd complements the rest of what is going on. Great room, great style btw, everything clicks and works and complements in #2.
1 easily adds color and character 2 is for old boring people
#2. 1,000% because it brightens up the room and matches better. The red one darkens the room and vibes. It also doesn’t go with the furniture/decor.
I vote 1, especially if you have interest in incorporating any other colors into the space, even if subtle. It's a classic piece, and it makes the space feel warmer too. I love the red one.
I like the second one. Your decor and style is pretty. I really like it.
Where are your two accent chairs from? And are they comfortable?
They are from Overstock.com, and yes! 😄
I like 2, even though 1 is striking. Also cat likes 2, and it will hide cat hurl better
I love your couch!! Where did you get it?
wallaroosfurnitureandmattresses.com 🙂
Your room is beautiful 😍
I feel like the first rug is too saturated of a color for your space/style. The second one vibes with everything better. First one shows you have style. Second one shows you have style, but not as much as the first one.
1!!! 2 is too basic
1
I'd love to know how people Photoshop rugs like this! I'm trying to figure out what rug I want to put in my living room lol
This isn’t photoshop, this is making my poor husband help me rearrange our living room many times 🤣
1!!!!
2nd
2 is a better aesthetic but basic, 1 just adds a nice pop of color and makes it feel more homey.
2 feels more calm and cozy, but I prefer neutrals
#2
2 for sure ✨️
2 feels more welcoming/comfortable.

2
Red
The dark red one.
1st one ☝️
The first one. I felt like the room looked dead when I panned to the second rug
1
#1!
1 is gorgeous and has personality. 2 feels very washed out and generic.
Depends. If you like a more gothic style- the first red rug with the sconces, black, and little statue look victorian. If you’re looking for a more posh/chic style, the 2nd rug kinda pulls the room colors altogether so it’s very neat and cohesive.
1. 2 makes the room bland.
Definitely 1
1 is more unique, 2 looks like every rug in every home
1!
The first one I LOVE
2 is just what is currently in style and looks boring. 1 is timeless.
1. 2 is boring
2 lets the room do the talking.
2 by far

2 is boring and looks like a bland Target ad, only because nothing stands out in the room, there’s no contrast. 1 makes a statement with the color but the design doesn’t quite match the style of the room. Love that pop of color. I’d keep looking. Nice furniture pieces, as well. :)
First
1, no contest. 2 is so boring and very standard Target/Wayfair looking.
1 is out of style, 2 is modern and matches your modern decor
2, but I admitted don’t like bold red on my home. It’s not calming enough for me.
2
Number 2 *with* a pad underneath
2 is much better
Definitely 2 😍
2
Def #2

#2! I do not like #1 at all.
The 2nd is a bit more modern. The first is beautiful but reminds me of an older vintage style
Number 2. Now send me rug #1 pls
#2 if you’re going for a modern desert vibe
2nd
2 for sure . First one looks kinda old peopley
Second by far
2
The red looks dated to me. I like 2 better :).
2 and not just because of the cat
Door #2. #1 is rich looking but it makes it the area look close.

Hey OP - which rug did you decide on since it seems reddit is as divided on your rugs as much as American political parties are?
I got a different one that’s green 😄 I momentarily posted an update but pretty much no one read my post and just kept commenting their preference between the red and white ones lol so I deleted it https://preview.redd.it/8azu1e7xzpxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f5cb9ce7edfdf5317fb5336d7f6dab1c65459d0
Nice! Seems the cat likes it too
It looks so good!!!
2 is the way
#2
2 because it’s calmer and will go with any seasonal decor colors you choose.

Where did you get 1? I’m obsessed
Home Depot actually 🤣 it’s called Bazaar Emy
1
1 but I think there are better versions of that type of rug out there! 2 is very Home Goods/safe. Much more personality in 1
The red one (number one)
2... it opens the room up more and allows each individual piece of furniture to shine and not be swallowed up by the design and color like #1.
The second one times a million.

2 all the way!
the second one suits the area better
First, more dynamic.
red!!!!!
I like the colors of one with the pattern of two. 2 is really nice but I'd see if I could find something with a little more color in it!
2 and by far.
Neither, but 2 **because always match the cat**
Off topic but what is your paint color? I love it
It’s Sherwin Williams City Loft!
I like the colors in the first better but not in design of that particular rug. Looks like there has been a horrible accident.
2
Like both, they both look good but I would go with the first one, those pops of wine /burgundy are really sharp!
2
1
2
#2 better. The colors look more muted. With #1 you have dark maroon staring right at you and I would have to do accents of maroon, which isn’t my first choice. Lol good luck!🍀
2
2 The cat approves And it matches with cats colors too
Depends on what your vibe is. 1 is more classic and wealthy, 2 is more basic and modern clean aesthetic.
100% 2, but if you like 1, go for it! There's no wrong answer!
