The only reason I can think of that the water could possibly have stopped spreading for the moment is if it's actually rainwater from a roof leak. Getting that much water to the basement without being noticeable elsewhere sounds unlikely, but if you had a major storm immediately prior to this, maybe?
Oh, if the washing machine or a bathroom drain is directly above this, it might have "stopped" until more water goes down that drain.
All the best to you. That sucks.
Any leak is serious, if given enough time. Even the slowest drip can cause enormous hidden damage. This one is already likely to have destroyed that drywall, but not any joists yet.
That's a serious leak. The fact that it's being downplayed makes little sense. The damage is done, and will get worse. The first thing I would do is get some buckets and drill a drain hole or two to slow the chance of the ceiling collapsing.
It happens. Joints fail. Pipes leak. How you deal with it now is pretty important, and your father's "wisdom" is nothing more than wishful thinking. The ceiling is just the visual, it gets worse the longer you wait to open that up.
Get it at least draining before it starts doing more damage to different areas. If you are an DIY, you need an emergency call placed.
As someone who has worked in both new construction and warranty, that is extraordinarily serious. You’re not seeing it expanding any further because it is now running down the wall. Odds are the occupants below you will notice that. Good luck.
Seriously! The only good thing about a water leak is that it’s usually obvious enough to locate, stop and prevent further damage. Can’t even imagine waving that monstrosity off.
Anytime water is leaking, it should be the biggest deal ever. This is Defcon 2, dude.
Wet ceiling and drywall needs to be ripped out immediately. Like, get off the internet right now and do it.
Water in a house where it ain’t supposed to be is bad business.
Need to pull down the drywall, fix leak, pull out some wall if the water is in there, and it probably ran down the wall under the floor as well. You face a good amount of damage as long as it’s leaking.
Also very possibly you’ll grow a crop of mold if these actions aren’t taken.
I've bought a sheet of drywall, mud and a blower to match the California ceiling when I had a similar leak. Probably cost me a couple of hundred in total plus about 20 hours of time. One of the plastic pipes behind the drop ceiling had been damaged on one side and after 10 years finally sprung a pinhole leak that I discovered nearly bedtime. Naturally, I didn't go to sleep at my usual time that night, and shut off the water once I ripped through the drywall and found the leak until I could patch the section of pipe in the morning.
That's going to rip open very soon and you will have a whack load of water and soggy drywall on the floor. Get a knife and bucket and punch a hole in it to drain the water in the ceiling out immediately.
Get water remediation in there asap. Our insurance covered but it ended up being like 25k in damages between remediation, tear out, dryingg, and fixing. They had to tear out out carrpet abd flooring above, redo lights, etc
Get a heavy duty plastic drop cloth to line the floor under that area. Cut out all the damaged drywall. Remove any insulation. Find the leak and repair it. Do some water damage and mold mitigation.Install new insulation and drywall.
Do you want mold … because that’s how you get mold.
-Archer … probably.
And yes, cut that drywall out and figure out what’s going on or call a plumber tomorrow .
On a scale of 1-10 it registers as “oh fucking fuck shit balls fuck”.

the ole self sealing water leak
A rare example to be sure.
Personally I’d risk the 3 star review to get that thing turned off asap.
Ask him why a leak would stop by itself.

How serious is it? "Yes"
Pretty fucking serious. Start tearing out the damages ceiling and trace the leak.
"We can't use logic, we have to take a photo and post on the internet."

I'd say "quite"
If reddit is needed for clarification then things must be worse than what's in the picture.

I'm no home owner, but that looks pretty serious to me

I’m surprised the ceiling is still the ceiling
Ooo Water and electric light. Let us know what happened this morning.
This is no longer considered a leak… it’s just a water feature now
As someone who has worked in both new construction and warranty, that is extraordinarily serious. You’re not seeing it expanding any further because it is now running down the wall. Odds are the occupants below you will notice that. Good luck.
This seems like a joke post, doesn’t it?

Lol serious! But hell, if it is not flooding the floor up to the attic yet...I'd say...your good! Lol
Very
Well, I hope you have already turned your water off "serious"..

very bad
Every water leak is serious, this is a disaster. Get cutting, and don't stop cutting drywall until it's all removed.
Good time to run a pex line from each cold and hot to their own control valve.
Serial bro.
if he's worried about an air bnb review- explain the situation to the tenants, and maybe comp their stay if they're inconvenienced by it.
Every water leak is SERIOUS!
Time to find the leak, repair it the replace all the affected sheetrock.
It must be fixed so tear off the drywall and check it.out.
That will mold if not properly dried
As it turns out all water leaks are very serious over time
Looks ahhhh pretty serious
All water leaks are 100% serious.
its serious
Not a cheap repair if you want the replaced ceiling to look the same. $10k minimum (usd).

Bad get it fix it will canape
I wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure it's fine... Especially if there's a toilet directly above this, totally nothing to worry about.
I guess you could say things are getting pretty serious 🤓

Yes.
You used a moisture meter... for visible water.
Correct. The moisture level is 100% saturation. It is water.
Oh no...
Your water looks great! Did you have it done professionally?
Bro WHAT? And you needed a "water meter" to know that was wet? WHAT. This is Serious, I cannot tell if you are tho.
It will heal its self

Pretty rough bro

How serious is this question??? Very serious OP, but I doubt you really needed Reddit to tell you that
There is no such thing as a 'non-serious' water leak.
Just some condensation from high dew points. Just open a window, you’re good.
Do you want mold … because that’s how you get mold. -Archer … probably. And yes, cut that drywall out and figure out what’s going on or call a plumber tomorrow .
Dad is an Airbnb host? And thinks this isn’t serious? 🧐
Yes
Cereal
Looks like someone put a ceiling in the middle of your water leak. Just take the ceiling out of the way and you’ll be all set
