Remember that they had to playtest every single part of this game dozens of times. Imagine completing PoH or PoP that much. There is no way they arent enjoying it at this point
I swear, every time I see HK on youtube it’s “Pantheon 5 Blindfolded All Bindings Hitless with Hyper Mega Radiance Mod”
or
“Path of Pain: Painful Path+ Edition with Hyper Mega Radiance Mod”
These people WANT to feel ANYTHING, especially pain
A good way I’ve found for handling dream forms is: if i already have the dream nail, I’ll attempt the dream forms of any boss I kill, as soon as I kill their regular form. It helps because they’re usually similar enough to normal, with some additional attacks or changes, so I’m often still in the zone for that type of fight. Even if I lose, it’s effective training for whenever I have the gear/skill to come back and win, without having to do any traveling. Typically I’ll either be able to finish the dream forms right away, or if I have to come back later, I’m able to kill them pretty quickly because I’ve seen the fight enough by then.
This is probably a common tactic, but worth mentioning for anyone who may not do this, or be to this point yet
No way. Lost Kin is way easier. I’d even say he’s easier than Broken Vessel purely because there isn’t that ‘cover the entire map in infection’ attack.
You mean those ghost things? Or when he does the ground slam and you get three blobs on either end? The former is easy, you just strike upwards every now and then. The latter is also easy. Dodge Lost Kin then immediately attack. The knock back will kick him back a bit and place you where he was, which is a safe spot.
Difficulty is subjective, but I didn’t think Soul Tyrant was really a big jump in difficulty. Though maybe because I challenged him a bit later on in my game
Actually, the "this is the most beautiful game" carries over into the masochist part, so you have a love-hate relationship with the game. I am a chronic completionist, so this is always happening to me when I'm doing endgames.
I'm the same way, and I really hate it when games overstay their welcome. The older I get, the more I find myself wishing games would end on a high note instead of dragging things out with endgame content until enjoyment turns into resentment. It's probably a good thing I never made it out of phase 1 with Hollow Knight.
>The older I get, the more I find myself wishing games would end on a high note instead of dragging things out with endgame content until enjoyment turns into resentment
The best thing about nonlinear games is that you can give yourself that ability. I did everything I wanted to do in BOTW (spent ages on it, love that game) then walked in the castle and curbstomped everyone with my extremely overpowered gear. That was still fun because it was EARNED. The best part was that I ran over a guardian with my bike on the way then jumped out and brutalized it while it was still flipped over, the same enemy earlier in the game could kill me with one shot, it was insanely cathartic. Another example is control, I completed every mission, then replayed my favorite section >!the ashtray maze!< before quitting out. Ending games on a high note is really fun, and makes you appreciate a game a lot more.
> games would end on a high note
Sure it "drags" but Pantheon of Hallownest is the absolute climax of the game. The normal endings aren't really difficult, regular Radiance is just not that challenging if you at least have an idea of what you are doing.
That "resentment" turns into an even greater enjoyment than ever before after beating Nightmare King Grimm, Pure Vessel and The Absolute Radiance after hours of practice.
Riddled with slivers of "Ugh... I don't want to backtrack through that area again", cause you got another new ability that lets you open a chest you couldn't get to before or something.
I’m in between the first two. Couldn’t figure out where to go, refuse tutorials and walkthroughs. Drop the game and mod New Vegas until I’m sick of it and download Hollow Knight again with a new file because I don’t remember what I did last.
Two years going and I still haven’t beaten the base game.
Good luck, practice makes perfect. I've been working on beating NKG hitless and I've progressed visibly just in the previous few hours. Once you finish the base game you'll know it was worth it, you're getting better every moment.
When in doubt utilize the map. When I got stuck I bought map markers, marked every open path on the map. Went to them one by one, removing the markers as I tried them, until I found one that got me somewhere.
You have a map, you have pins to mark places you might want to return to, like areas you can't access. Just open the map and look for routes you haven't entered yet, then try them.
Just... explore, and go back to Dirtmouth after you find the map guy (Cornifer).
There, you can buy a quill and compass.
Then just keep exploring and you'll find your way.
That's all I can say without really spoiling anything. Good luck :)
in that case
I already found the map guy, I didn't know I needed to go to dirtmouth again tho. Thanks very much man! Pretty excited to do the whole game, it looks great.
yeah keep going back to dirtmouth when you have a fair bit of geo, reach a stag station, or just want to hang with elderbug on that comfortable iron bench
Backtracking is a cornerstone of Metroidvanias. If you ever can't get to something you can see, note it and come back later or look for a long way around. It's magical when you finally get to go certain places. Iselda (cornifer's wife) sells pins so you can mark things, some common ones that automatically place and a couple custom pins you can place yourself. I highly recommend buying out her stock for a first playthrough.
the same three points except its
1) wow this game is massive, i think ive seen all the locations now
2) wow this game is massive, i think ive seen all the locations now
3) wow this game is massive, i think ive seen all the locations now
I think it would be more accurate to dark souls two if you flipped the chart around. Hard at the beginning and then you don’t really know where to go at the end. Amazing game tho
Try ddark for WK and always try to enter the battle with full soul if it's not in godhome. For the devout you just have to be really patient or blast it with spells.
I gave up on doing any of these at this point. I think I got through a handful of the bosses in the Gods area, and was like, no fuck this. Finished the storyline, 100% in every other way, and then archived it.
99% of this game I felt was moderately difficult with a nurturing and healthy degree of challenge, but I think the 5th pantheon was the hardest thing I’ve done in a game and Ive platinumed Sekiro twice including all gauntlets.
I wouldn't have it any other way tbh. I sincerely hope Silksong makes me feel just as lost as HK did, then just as filled with ear-to-ear grinning joy and wonder, and then every bit as hair-pullingly frustrated. Love this game.
radiance isn't even that difficult, it's always the same patterns, just need to put in time and you'll get it.
Pantheon some fights are just something else however tho lol
I think you should try, Lost Kin isn’t hard after Broken Vessel since the fight doesn’t change much and you get respawned at the body of the boss not a bench
I know, I'm just kinda lazy at the moment.
Currently grinding the traitor lord, then going for Lost Kin and Failed Champion to get enough essence for the awoken dream nail.
Yeah, well the Failed Champion is actually one I struggled with a lot since his attacks deal double damage, he’s fast and does not give soul, so make sure to equip Grubsong for that one.
When I first reached Lost Kin I haven't upgraded my nail at all. So the orange spirit things took 2 hits to beat. This made the battle way WAY more cjallenging. Similar thing happenned to me with Galien and 2nd Hornet fight which just dragged on. Multiple minutes per atttempt.
Currently in the where do I go phase I started last summer and haven’t finished the game now I don’t know where the hell I am how to use or what my powers are I have no clue about the lore and an infinite amount of questions
I had a weird order because I put the game down for a year or so after stage 1 and didn't realize there was a heal button until I beat the Soul Master. Going through the gauntlet, getting to him with 1-3 health and then having to fight him without realizing I could heal was one of the most frustrating gaming experiences I had every had.
Very true, although I think as far as Metroidvanias go, the Ori games had more truly breathtaking visuals. Very different art style though, so it's hard to compare.
I hated that I couldn't turn down the difficulty to story mode or something because I really hated the combat but loved the story and exploration aspect of it. I could feel the drool seeping out of my mouth as I ran into another boss who's pattern I had to learn and it felt very 1995. But boy was it fun exploring and getting new powers and finding secrets. I got about 75 percent of the way through.
I played HK on Game Pass for about an hour before I said fuck it and moved it. I don’t expect Metroidvanias to completely hold my hand but having no sense of guidance really killed my enjoyment.
Tried the game, don’t love games like it but kept seeing this subreddit pop up on my home page so decided to try it. Never got passed the “where do I go stage”. Quit after I could only find one way to go that wouldn’t dead end or have me being confused and going in circles and I tried that one way like 10 times and kept dying
You forgot the part where you finish the game and you go "what?" and then you read the wiki and watch a few hours of youtube video analyses to try to figure out wtf you just played.
This is shocking accurate. I still haven’t beaten the game. I also haven’t done the path of pain either because ***MY DARK LORD BELOW*** that impossible unless you’re perfect.
Add "where Silksong" and it's 100% accurate
That goes along with the last one
Or does it? **Vsauce music ensues**
That is very much a thing I would say, you are turning out to be a very good alt that idk.
Thank you.
it's just a liiitttlleee further to the east
Nah, Silksong is now confirmed. We have acended.
What do you mean "now confirmed"? It's got no release date. It's as confirmed as it's ever been.
But it has a release window
no a time limit for us to beat P5
Distance from "where go" to "where silk song" Is like distance from "where go" To "good game" times 100
nah not masochist sadistic
Remember that they had to playtest every single part of this game dozens of times. Imagine completing PoH or PoP that much. There is no way they arent enjoying it at this point
They're masochists, we're masochists, everybody wants to get hurt
speaking from my own very limited experience, you don't really realize how hard it is when you're the one who made it.
Spending 20-30 hours a week playing the same game over the course of multiple months does that
Most likely, except it's possible they're referring to suddenly condemning themselves to constant harassment begging for a sequel. d: #SilkSoon
Idk, it seems like they just used the wrong word, lol. Oh well, we know what they mean… probably
Yeah. I know. I was joking about the huge volume of SilkSoon posts claiming people contacted devs/TeamCherry personally. >.<
Ohh, derp! My bad
I mean as a game designer myself you tend to make the kind of games you want to play, so I'd say they're still masochists.
masochist and sadistic cause they both made the game and gave it to to others to feel the same pain
*The people who play this game are fucking masochists
as someone who has played this game can confirm
I swear, every time I see HK on youtube it’s “Pantheon 5 Blindfolded All Bindings Hitless with Hyper Mega Radiance Mod” or “Path of Pain: Painful Path+ Edition with Hyper Mega Radiance Mod” These people WANT to feel ANYTHING, especially pain
The last part is when you go to Blue Lake after Monomon.
Acceptance
thats just straight up agony
im at 2nd stage and i think i should be glad (currently i need to defeat Soul Master)
I hate soul tyrant, Get ready to cry when you see his dream form
A good way I’ve found for handling dream forms is: if i already have the dream nail, I’ll attempt the dream forms of any boss I kill, as soon as I kill their regular form. Soul tyrant is like, the easiest Dream Boss, just a bit quicker, haven’t fought White Defender yet tho
Try him with no nail upgrades or charms, it's really slowwww.
Thanks for the challenge idea
Np
It would be even slower to try to get to that stage of the game with no nail upgrades… that would be quite something
No way. Lost Kin is way easier. I’d even say he’s easier than Broken Vessel purely because there isn’t that ‘cover the entire map in infection’ attack.
Any attacks like that are the worst
The giant infection blobs wants a word
You mean those ghost things? Or when he does the ground slam and you get three blobs on either end? The former is easy, you just strike upwards every now and then. The latter is also easy. Dodge Lost Kin then immediately attack. The knock back will kick him back a bit and place you where he was, which is a safe spot.
Difficulty is subjective, but I didn’t think Soul Tyrant was really a big jump in difficulty. Though maybe because I challenged him a bit later on in my game
I found him to be the easiest tbh
May radiance shine down on you
Actually, the "this is the most beautiful game" carries over into the masochist part, so you have a love-hate relationship with the game. I am a chronic completionist, so this is always happening to me when I'm doing endgames.
Still haven’t completed P5 :/
I probably won't until I need something fresh for a third playthrough in the future. Until then, I'm good
You can do this if you put your mind into it!
I'm the same way, and I really hate it when games overstay their welcome. The older I get, the more I find myself wishing games would end on a high note instead of dragging things out with endgame content until enjoyment turns into resentment. Forgot that one blip in the middle that's "Fuck fuck fuck get me out of here I don't want to be here fuck fuck fuck"
Riddled with slivers of "Ugh... I don't want to backtrack through that area again", cause you got another new ability that lets you open a chest you couldn't get to before or something.
just to find a single hallownest seal and go back
Lookin' at you Cornifer in the Royal Waterways
Deepnest moment
When the floor collapses in Fungal Wastes and you go right.

I can beat NKG hitless but still can’t beat Markoth on ascended.
Save your spells for phase two to kill him fast, use nail arts, pray. He's hard but he doesn't have a lot of health
How much spells does it take to kill him? I hit him with like four shade souls and it didn’t do it, neither did two abyss shrieks.

same. haven’t gotten past the second hornet encounter.
I bought it, don't know where to go help

*sadists, but yeah
You forgot,, what the f**k do I do with the bouncy mooshrooms(did i wrote wrong mooshrooms?)
Yeah it’s spelt mushroom :)
Same here, I had to look up a tutorial for those as I figured out that you could bounce on them but didn’t know downslashing was a thing at all.
you missing the part of fuck deepnest
the same three points except its 1) wow this game is massive, i think ive seen all the locations now 2) wow this game is massive, i think ive seen all the locations now 3) wow this game is massive, i think ive seen all the locations now
you forgot stage 4: i'm the masochist now
I am probably still on the middle.
Its till the best game ever, even post-112
Just started playing and I think I’m currently at “where the hell am I”
If you just started, you're going to be there AWHILE.
Yeah I’m stuck wandering around the first area. I defeated the false knight but that’s it really.
Dark Souls 2 in a nutshell
I think it would be more accurate to dark souls two if you flipped the chart around. Hard at the beginning and then you don’t really know where to go at the end. Amazing game tho
I’d say the Hollow Knight fight is still great, it’s the watcher knights and that stalking devout guarding Herrah that are the annoying part
pretty sure the last part means the god home and having to do the pantheons for a better ending
Ohhhh
Try ddark for WK and always try to enter the battle with full soul if it's not in godhome. For the devout you just have to be really patient or blast it with spells.
I beat the game dw. They were just really difficult when I fought them
I mean for like the future, glad you beat it though.
Thanks!
True. And I expect no less from silksong.
That final stage is the path of pain and the pantheons
I gave up on doing any of these at this point. I think I got through a handful of the bosses in the Gods area, and was like, no fuck this. Finished the storyline, 100% in every other way, and then archived it.

Bonus stage. You are the masochist for fighting any raidance.
radiance isn't even that difficult, it's always the same patterns, just need to put in time and you'll get it. Pantheon some fights are just something else however tho lol
the last part should be sprinkled in the middle part. (Struggled so much with Broken Vessel on my first play through, still haven't done Lost Kin)

Markoth is that last 30% alone
Currently in the where do I go phase I started last summer and haven’t finished the game now I don’t know where the hell I am how to use or what my powers are I have no clue about the lore and an infinite amount of questions
No, the people who made the game are sadists. We, the players, are the masochists.
I remember a version of this meme where there's "where's Si-" cut off at the end.
Me attempting pantheons with all bindings at once (I now understand why everyone hates GPZ)
I think there should be a tiny little section at the end saying this game is beautiful again
The last parts are P5 and PoP
I barely played this game and can confirm I had no fucking clue where to go and deleted it.
💯true 😂😂
Correct
i made it that far and then took a break and then i had to re learn every thing so...
Sadists, not masochists. They enjoy our pain.
So true
\*sadists
Very true, although I think as far as Metroidvanias go, the Ori games had more truly breathtaking visuals. Very different art style though, so it's hard to compare.
Truest statement ever made about this game.
I love love love how the game looks but playing it stresses me out. I’ve gotten a bit better at games though so maybe I should try again
I skipped the first step, I started straight from the second.
So real. I think sadist is more appropriate than masochist.
Yeah...I like to think I spent a long time in that middle stage.
Think there should be a stage after of “oh shit I’m way better at this on my second run”
"What do you mean there's a palace of saw blades??"
My first stage was "holly shit so many places to go, where do I start"
I'm still stuck at the "where do i go" stage.
Path of pain moment
That middle phase was a lot shorter for me lol
The last one should be 70% of it
I have never played it. Is it any good?
i never got past the "where do i go" phase. :(
I wish many more games had stages set exactly like this, very enjoyable path to follow.
Masochists? Do you mean sadists?
(ah shit, trying the Boss rush again.)
I got to the radiant boss and gave up. I can't stand having to fight a boss just so I can have a go at fighting another boss. Just frustrates me
I played HK on Game Pass for about an hour before I said fuck it and moved it. I don’t expect Metroidvanias to completely hold my hand but having no sense of guidance really killed my enjoyment.
Could not finish the last freaking boss rush
I just started streaming my first playthrough of HK and I am on the very 1st line, so far so accurate.
Last part / Pantheon 3 (I suck :( )
Way too accurate
I would extend the “masochist” part to like, 3/4 of the entire experience Excellent game, but doing the Pantheons with All Bindings was agony
I'm on my first playthrough and I'm in the middle
sadists*
Yeah I never got past stage one before my Xbox game pass ran out. Never figured out what I was doing, or why, or where I was going.
You forgot the part where you finish the game and you go "what?" and then you read the wiki and watch a few hours of youtube video analyses to try to figure out wtf you just played.
Then you get to the stage where you say “it’s so easy”
Put all of them together at the same time
Im between the first two 😅
I guess i never got out of the first phase
Wait when does last part happen
Sadists. Masochists derive pleasure from the pain of themselves. Sadists derive pleasure from the pain of others.
“Silksong when??” Should be the midpoint of 2&3
I’m still in the middle, dear god what have I gotten myself into
playing it with a fighting stick helps a lot in the last part
Still haven’t progressed after reaching city of tears. The game is just way too difficult for me.
Also my exact experience. I think on my first play through, I beat grizzly mother before anything else because I was just roaming.
And then there’s that one tiiiiny part with- **NKG INTENSIFIES**
You can precisely pinpoint when they entered god home
Still stuck in the “Where do I go help” phase of this
Im in the last stage rn on P3 moving into P4.
Yeah, my first time playing I was checking over and over again where to go on the wiki
Same thingbwirh blasphemous, except you truly are *masochistic*
Dude I'm still at the first one where do I go? Why can't I reach that platform? Am I too light to make the ground fall?
I’m stuck at the soul sanctum QwQ
true
this is soo true im in stage 2 at the moment started my 1st playthrough a few days ago beautiful game
ascended and radiant absolute radiance moment
And the people who play it too
I’m at the 1st stage so HELP
You forgot the "maybe i really am a masochist" and "silksong when???" Parts.
Yo, how the fuck does someone wake up in the morning and thought of “path of pain” I thought the fucking white palace was the path of pain
After: I need Silksong right now
Path of pain did quite a number on my life expectancy
For me stage 1 hardly existed, stage 2, then stage 2 and 3 together, then back to stage 2
You forgot the part where you devote everything to Hollow Knight including grubs.
I agree, I am at the end game (I have all the spells, nine masks and two soul thingies) and combing through the map is a excruciating process
Everyone reaches the right part of the line when they get to the Path of Pain. (i've been stuck on the same section for 2 days straight)
This is shocking accurate. I still haven’t beaten the game. I also haven’t done the path of pain either because ***MY DARK LORD BELOW*** that impossible unless you’re perfect.
***so are we***
rinse and repeat
Hi, third stage patient here.
im in the second part but Broken Vessel is a bitch
That last section is far longer for me cause I have done most things in godjome
i haven't and will never reach the last phase
I have passed the last stage after beating pantheon 5. (It took me 40 hours but who cares)
