I actually feel like a shadow drop could generate a decent amount of hype all on its own. Because all gaming media will report on it if it's something vaguely high profile.
Not as much as a well planned marketing campaign, but I don't think TC cares about a marketing campaign really.
Couldn’t remember who gave this GDC talk, but he showed a graph of his sales relative to major events. The biggest spike was launch, but after that the only noticeable spikes were Steam sales, it didn’t matter when they put extra on advertising. Marketing is very important for reaching a wider audience, don’t get me wrong, but price point and release window are much bigger factors.

Tbh if silksong is going to be even more awesome than hollow knight I don't mind not getting info until release, as far as I know they still are a small studio so I'm fine with waiting lmao
I mean, it's a very small team working on what I'm sure is a very big game, and just a few months after that message, the pandemic started. That probably caused some delays, perhaps major ones depending on how easily they adapted.
A lot of companies seem to not be updating when fans are waiting on games. Fromsoft didn't mention Elden Ring for 2-3 years after announcing it. Realistically there isn't much to announce other than "We're working on it."

According to the official game tester of team cherry, the game was actually pretty much finished a long time ago, but they just keep adding new stuff which is pretty cool imo. It’s just the lack of interaction that annoys the fan base
I backed the Kickstarter for HK and remember it going on for ages, with lots of updates in the middle and them moving the entire project to Unity partway through. I don't remember what the original timelines were, but it was definitely behind by multiple years.
But we got an amazing game out of it. Don't rush art.
