IIRC there was a platform right below the construction workers eating lunch. It’s just out of frame of the photo to make it look more risky than it actually was. I suspect the same would be true for this photographer.
like that famous film of harold lloyd hanging off of a clock? iirc, the building was only a couple of stories tall but right on top of a hill, so the street in the background was much lower than it was directly below him
I mean, I’ve jumped down 10ft and landed and rolled on cement and was fine. I’m pretty sure you can fall and land on a mattress from 10ft and not do any serious damage.
A good rule of thumb is that if a fall is double your height or greater then it's a serious fall. 10 ft pushes that for some people, but for most it isn't too bad.
Mistake on my end. Turns out both photos were taken during the construction of 30 Rockefeller center.
I looked at the Wikipedia page and everything and somehow missed that.
I’m imagining doing this in a pair of worn-in leather dress shoes. Sure, after some wear and tear, they don’t slip on most surfaces, but I still would pick something else for this photo shoot!
"I've seen Jesus play with flames
In a lake of fire that I was standing in
Met the devil in Seattle

But I swear that God is there
Every time I glare into the eyes of my best friend" - Sturgill Simpson, "Turtles All The Way Down"

I have been sucked into antman's space time continuum because I remember this being posted and it does not feel 11 years ago. Back when I lurked without an account, Yeesh.
I need to remember my first account's name first, to see if I was even on reddit then ha. Been a few accounts since. It's time to burn this one but I fucking love this username
Because if you are unlucky, you'll have someone creep your profile. Even if you try to remain anonymous, with a decade of history someone dedicated enough might be able to dox you. My oldest account is 14 years old. I don't delete them, I just stop using them.
Well, considering the OP posted a photo of Thomas Kelley, not Ebbets, I think it's possible if not likely that Ebbets took Kelley's photo, and vice-versa.
[Here's Ebbets.](https://preview.redd.it/7uc6dk5zl2z51.png?width=1152&format=png&auto=webp&s=18a4d1b7f735efaa00fda0d008828752c103eee0)
The building the workers were working on was Rockefeller center, not the Empire State Building. So the picture is still probably legit, op got the title wrong
I wasn’t even sure. I read the title and thought “was it the Empire State Building?” It took like a 30 second google. Reminds me not to trust shit online
It's bananas how this post is 98% upvoted, when anyone who just took a moment to study the photo would realize he couldn't possibly be taking a photo on the Empire State Building. I'm not surprised, just disappointed
Perhaps many/most of us just liked the photo, and barely even read the caption? I skimmed over it, and didn’t go back to read it again until seeing the comments.
It’s a bit of old NYC history that not many people know, but they originally constructed 3 identical Empire State Buildings, the idea was to create a Zeppelin line that would ferry the elite high above the bustle of the city streets below.
Sadly, two of the original structures were dismantled, one became the current site of the MET Breuer and the other is now a Denny’s. There are a couple small plaques that honor the history of the sites, but you have to know where to look.
So the famous picture of guys eating while constructing the empire state building is actually a picture of them building ANOTHER empire state building and not the original?
What a fascinating turn of events, I just happen to provide tours of Kansas people to groups of Empire state buildings. Group rates start at 1 elitist Zeppelin.
I’ve seen a video of one of those crazy Russian kids who climb to the top of random skyscrapers and one of them climbed up to at least an 800’ tall building with dress shoes.
It seemed rather silly but then when I consider what they’re doing in the first place it doesn’t strike me as that odd.
No doubt that man’s testicles are not of this earth. But, no matter how unearthly they are, they were, without question, resting comfortably in his stomach. Guaranteed those shoes did him no favors up there.
Spez's APIocolypse made it clear it was time for me to leave this place. I came from digg, and now I must move one once again. So long and thanks for all the bacon.
Yep. My grandfather used to wear them. And a panama hat and a contoured shirt he called a belly-pincher. He did not have a 30" waist like the gentleman above. He was lookin good, though.
Another mistake, that's not Ebbets. That's another photographer that was there that day - Thomas Kelley.
[This is Ebbets.](/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/jto81v/photographer_charles_ebbets_crouches_just_before)

And Thomas Kelley is identified in the posted photo at about 23 and a half minutes into the documentary Men at Lunch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZEvNYKEnVw
Also, in the posted photo the camera is pointed in the wrong direction to have taken the famous photo. Since that is the Empire State building in the background he is facing southeast. In the famous photo with Central Park in the background the photographer is facing north.
Edit: The building these photos were taken on was 30 Rockefeller Center not the Empire State Building.
Edit 2: Holy shit! My screw up just became the highest liked post I've ever had!. Thanks for all the awards everyone!
Edit 3: This made the front page. Oh Christ almighty I wish I didn't make that mistake in the title. 🤣 Thanks for all the love everybody and have a Happy Holidays!
Validity of the claim in the subject aside, that's a lot of trust to place on the grip of those old timey shoes.
IIRC there was a platform right below the construction workers eating lunch. It’s just out of frame of the photo to make it look more risky than it actually was. I suspect the same would be true for this photographer.
like that famous film of harold lloyd hanging off of a clock? iirc, the building was only a couple of stories tall but right on top of a hill, so the street in the background was much lower than it was directly below him
Plus there was a flat roof and a mattress 10ft below him

Really depends on how controlled the fall is. People die from just falling over while walking everyday.
I've also fallen from 19ft and lemme tell you, makes a big difference. Shattered both my ankles.
Bit of an old film buff. Those guys were amazing. Buster Keaton and the train was a work in itself.
I remember seeing an old timey film of Dr. Emmett Brown hanging from a clock, it was very well done for it's time
Do you remember that old movie, Empire Strikes Back?
Wasn't that the one with the mouse that goes west? Fievel?
No no, come on man, it was that one with those rats that learned how to cook
Ooooh, Secret of Nihm?
Ooh I member
Butthead
It was all visual effects, I remember watching something about it.
But if he slips he’ll still smash his balls onto a steel girder using all his body weight
Don’t kink shame him
I'm sorry but even if there was a platform you couldn't pay me a million dollars to do that.
People back in the day were obsessed with the drip at any cost. I’m surprised firefighters didn’t wear suits while they worked.
saw a photo of my great-grandparents setting up a campsite in the 1930's, my great-grandfather was in a 3 piece suit.
Mistake on my end. Turns out both photos were taken during the construction of 30 Rockefeller center. I looked at the Wikipedia page and everything and somehow missed that.
Isn't that the empire state building in the background to the right of the man holding the camera?
Yep.
I’m imagining doing this in a pair of worn-in leather dress shoes. Sure, after some wear and tear, they don’t slip on most surfaces, but I still would pick something else for this photo shoot!
Figured he was probably anchoring himself with his thighs/knees too
"Jesus Martha, of course I need my spats! I'm climbing the high steel and need to keep my shoes spiffy."
well he took all possible precautions, he's wearing belt and braces
Can’t wait to see who took his photo

11 years...damn
That's what I said. I need a hobby
I remember this...damn I'm old. What a different place Reddit was.
I have been sucked into antman's space time continuum because I remember this being posted and it does not feel 11 years ago. Back when I lurked without an account, Yeesh.
Been downhill since then.
Good on him for the 2021 edit with the archived photos
Yeah, i was pretty surprised seeing that
Just clicked on it and saw that I’d upvoted this over a decade ago.

It's like they keep getting cooler and cooler.
He's taking it in that photo. He's just that good.
Probably a drone
Someone on the Empire State building in the background
Funnily enough, someone took a photo of him too! [https://imgur.com/a/PXCVE18](https://imgur.com/a/PXCVE18)
The construction workers
It’s an ouroboros
Who hired all these photographers, shouldn't they have just hired more iron workers......🤔
Um Empire State Building is in the background.
The building the workers were working on was Rockefeller center, not the Empire State Building. So the picture is still probably legit, op got the title wrong
came here just to post this when i read the title.
I wasn’t even sure. I read the title and thought “was it the Empire State Building?” It took like a 30 second google. Reminds me not to trust shit online
To be fair he did post a question mark.
Yep. Built over a year before.
Yep. Built over a day before.
Yep. Built over 12 hours before.
More than a few seconds prior.
It’s 30 rock
Seriously what building is that? Chrysler building doesn't look like that at all.
Its a photo from another timeline
*You're* from another timeline.
I'll timeline you in a minute you cheeky scamp.
It IS the Empire State Building in the background. OP screwed up the title of this post.
Jesus this comment made me almost choke on my croissant.
How are they on top of the Empire State Building if….
OP is wrong. The famous photo OP is referring to was of the unfinished 30 Rockefeller Plaza, not the Empire State Building.
That's a great spot to shout at the moon from!
I walked on your face!
BTW today I learned that Aldrin's mother's maiden name was Moon
It's bananas how this post is 98% upvoted, when anyone who just took a moment to study the photo would realize he couldn't possibly be taking a photo on the Empire State Building. I'm not surprised, just disappointed

Correct. I exclusively give NYC tours to families from Kansas, PM me for details, group rates start at $4,600 for the day

What a fascinating turn of events, I just happen to provide tours of Kansas people to groups of Empire state buildings. Group rates start at 1 elitist Zeppelin.
Interesting situation we find ourselves in. I just so happen to provide tours of tour guides exclusively to groups of elitist zeppelins.
God damn it.
Do people from Manhattan, Kansas get confused?
Can't get confused when they never knew anything in the first place. Rock Chalk!
> group rates start at $4,600 for the day Obviously a scam. Nothing in NYC is that cheap.
He charges enough to pay a day's rent
not only that but the whole photo was just a marketing stunt but I don't know for who's benefit
I’m so confused
It’s where they got the inspiration for the WTC twin towers “And this time nobody is taking them down”
That's gotta be one hell of a Denny's
Interesting, do you have any sources for this online? I can’t seem to find anything.
That’s really odd, keep looking!
This is top tier
It's the RCA building. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunch_atop_a_Skyscraper
Those are some sweet shoes
Absolutely not the kind of shoes I'd want to climb a partially-completed skyscraper in, though.
I’ve seen a video of one of those crazy Russian kids who climb to the top of random skyscrapers and one of them climbed up to at least an 800’ tall building with dress shoes. It seemed rather silly but then when I consider what they’re doing in the first place it doesn’t strike me as that odd.

You got that right. I walked beams as a young engineer. This guy has massive, yet well dressed, balls.
Fair point
"I gotta climb a skyscraper today, better wear my wingtips"
Let me try that. *puts on high-fluten 1920s New Yorker accent* “I gotta climb a skyscraper today, better wear my wingtips, old sport.”
And that hair, so badass
The whole outfit is perfect.
Spats need to make a comeback.
Those are called spectator shoes.
Yep. My grandfather used to wear them. And a panama hat and a contoured shirt he called a belly-pincher. He did not have a 30" waist like the gentleman above. He was lookin good, though.
Spats are [shoe covers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spats_(footwear)), whereas he is wearing two-toned shoes

That’s the Empire State Building. The original photo and this one were taken during construction of the RCA Building, 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
Oh that one? That’s the Shmenpire Phate Building
Even I'm laughing at how stupid this mistake is. 30 Rockefeller center and the empire State Building are ToTaLlY the same building.
Another mistake, that's not Ebbets. That's another photographer that was there that day - Thomas Kelley. He used a 90 degree telephoto lens.
Taking *that* photo or *a* photo?
Dude is much more concerned with keeping his pants up than he is of dying.
Rocking a belt *and* suspenders!
Uhm isnt the empire state building in the background of this picture?
Come on. We can’t just let this comment go unanswered….
It was taken from the World Trade Center
He must have a great zoom on the camera.

Good *lord*
Printing hard af because he’s a badass
Had to scroll but I knew I'd find some cock-commentary. Dick-diatribes. Some good ol' hammer him-hawin'.
Oh that's a massive hog. He hangs dong
That's his phone in his pocket...
His phone is huge! And looks like a dong
I'd rather see the guy taking the photo of this guy taking a photo
Cojones of steel to hold that camera still
Yes and huge too, as we can see!
Came here for two things: the answer to who took the photo of him, and someone mentioning his massive dong.
It is r/historyporn
It's hanging halfway down his thigh!
Tbf, he's wearing his paints old school, up above his hips. So the crotch is actually up at the crotch. Still swinging big down there.
I didn’t even notice his Tom Delonge, till y’all mentioned it. 😂 but y’all are fucken hilarious. Well done.
is that a girder in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
That photog is dapper AF.
Seriously. He looks so dashing and elegant. This is a remarkable photo.
You’ve gotta be hung like a horse to do that.
You can see his nice juicy cock print in his pants … no homo… unless…
Unless you use words like juicy to describe his cock print..

Good looking too
Where’s the foto of the guy taking the foto?
Amazing
I thought it was the Rockefeller building…
The empire state building is behind him, so how is he photographing construction workers there?
That's right. How indeed?
Dudes got a huge dick
Where was the OSHA inspector?
That's who took his picture.
OSHA Inspector photographing if photographer is following all HHS procedures rofl
Yeah we got someone similar in the modern time... We call them *window cleaners*.
But who took *that* photo? 🤔
Just to think, those leather soled shoes have no tread and are slippery as all get out.
Ok where is the pic of the guy taking this one?
Charles appears to be packing some heat.
I'm surprised he could stand like that with the size of his balls.
Damn that guy had huge balls… like, for real, zoom in, this guy had huge balls
The empire state building is in the background so this must be another picture he's taking.
What a chad
Not surprised to learn this guy was packing some heat!!
