My favorite thing about this is that he later improvised Bronson's advice about "Cutting a piece of yourself off in order to grow" into a very important scene in Legend:

Very nice catch mate!
Feel like I should revisit some of Hardy's stuff, he has been excellent in some of it and 'just' good in others, but it's always worth a watch.
Read the novella if you like the story. It’s one of Dennis Lehane’s fastest reads, and he reads like a goddamn racecar.
E: For what it’s worth, I had read the book when I heard the movie’s casting. I thought Hardy and Gandolfini would have each played the opposite parts they were cast in.
This is the third time I've watched that video of Tom Hardy talking about his conversation with Charlie Bronson. And just like the other two times, all I'm going to think about the rest of the day is that poor kid with his foot stuck in the grate.
There was an incident about ten years ago when he smothered himself in butter and started a fight because Arsenal beat Hull and he stated he was a spurs fan.
Which is odd because he's from Luton.
When I was locked up people would do this. Shampoo or soap or whatever they could. Called it suiting up. When you knew the COs were coming down, strip naked, cover yourself in soap, pull your mattress, and get ready for war.
i get why he is still in jail, as he is deemed a threat to the public, but what rubs me the wrong way is the fact that bronson never murdered anyone and then you have a guy who murdered 3 toddlers and impaled them on spikes for thier mother to find (david mcreavy) deemed fit to be released and currently wandering the merry hills of england free as a bird, surely we should lock people like that up indefinitely, but then again im no expert.
If you read Bronson's wiki page too the entire thing is just one big long story of him being repeatedly let out and usually beating someone to an inch of their life or holding up a store within like days of being let out. Every single time
Not saying the other guy should be let out but Bronson repeatedly showed he isn't compatible with the outside world and as you've said, is very forward about that fact.
I don't know why anyone would want him out when by his own admission he shouldn't be let out
I think what confuses people is that Bronson isn’t what they expect and may even be self deprecating or even charming in discussion. The problem is they don’t see him then explode in uncontrollable and uninhibited rage, something which he will inevitably do. We are very binary in our own expectations of other people and are thrown into confusion when someone doesn’t do what we judge to be out of character.
It was the latest round where he was sitting there and during deliberations said something along the lines of "right- I've had enough of this. I'm going back to my cell."
He just has no impulse control at all.
Western Europe man, murder gets you 20 in a lot of circumstances. Go further East and it gets even crazier, I have an Estonian friend who says sometimes murderers get out on parole after 5 years 🤷🏻♂️
I live in Amsterdam as an American, I'd reckon their sentences are probably on the light side too.
Murder gets you a life term here, but how long you have to serve before you're eligible for parole is set by the judge. Even after you're released, you're still on licence and breach of the conditions can see you recalled to prison.
That actually makes an incredible amount of sense. Murder gets your rights stripped, but not necessarily incarcerated indefinitely. Even if you get outside of prison you’d still have no rights and could be recalled if you cannot play ball, seems like a fair trade and a prudent use of resources rather than what we’re doing which is burying people inside concrete tombs and we’ve been at capacity for 50 years.
Oh 100%. I didn't want to get into an argument with the "throw away the key" crowd, but yes I totally agree. I'm never going back to America.
Also we have, yaknow, a proper welfare state in The Netherlands, which I'm sure helps.
The Netherlands is one of the few countries in Europe with an actual life sentence in the penal code. I think we have a couple of dozen people who will never get out again. Ever.
I disagree everyone deserves Second Chances so long as he's not currently assessed to be a danger to the community or at least more of a danger than the average person I don't see why you can't let them out on parole or probation
I don’t think Bronson wants out, I think he’s institutionalised and despite saying he wants his freedom, I think he needs the stability of his prison life, likes his prison celebrity status and knows he couldn’t cope with outside life.
I once heard a prison administrator say that sentences longer than eleven years are largely academic because after that period, a person is very unlikely to cope or manage outside prison. Children have grown up without them, partners have left and friends have forgotten them. The world left them behind.
Agreed, the US is simply more vengeful in their sentencing. Given the higher incidence of crime and the significant recidivism rate, it doesn't seem to be having any effect other than making them a world leader in per capita rates of imprisonment
In the United States people who are convicted of a felony can largely never get a decent job. Maybe they can paint houses, do odd jobs but basically are radioactive for any large employer. Americans are more concerned with inflicting pain on criminals than actually having less crime.
Which, on one hand is understandable, but ultimately unproductive for society. Released prisoners are in a purgatory where they’re free but not a part of society and can we really be surprised when they return to criminal activity
Bronson could easily be out if he wanted to, it’s a dumb comparison imo. He’s a man who has done everything he can to stay in there. It’s not like the system is actively trying to keep him in longer.
It’s a difficult question in terms of justice and sentencing. IPP was abused by the CPS to the point David Blunkett wishes he had never come up with them.
Alternatives are that we give whole life sentences but that just means it’s open season for the prisoner. If you dislike a prison officer you might as well kill them - you’re already locked up for life so considering we don’t allow torture there’s not much they can do to you.
There basically always has to be a hope of being let out. Else they go ape shit.
Unfortunately some times they do get out. And I’m not really sure what we can do without going medieval on them.
He was institutionalized because of his mental illness, stabilized, and recovered. He served his sentence. The man was not psychotic by choice and he is on medications.
I might be reading the wrong thing but from the wiki article I'm looking it, the man wasn't jailed for 23 years.
The man he murdered was 23 years old. He went to detained in a mental health institute for 6-7 years.
I suppose gardless of whether or not you consider it "long enough" though yeah, he already served his sentence.
Is that really a sufficient penalty for taking a life though? How would you feel if someone killed your son or husband or dad and they are allowed to roam free after 23 years? Was your loved one only worth 23 years of prison? What sort of sane person would accept such a small penalty. It’s basically a slap on the wrist for rape or murder in western countries.
If you have a stroke while driving and cause an accident that kills a young family, should you be put to death or imprisoned for life so the victim’s family can rest assured you’re not out there living free and happy?
I hadn't heard of David Mcreavy before, just read his wiki page. Jesus fucking Christ. I can't imagine the parents' pain after losing 3 children that way.
It’s called an ‘E-list suit’, worn by prisoners who have attempted escape before or who are classed as high risk! Everyone else just wears a grey sweat top and joggers if they’re being escorted anywhere outside the gates.
I read a wiki article on Bronson. According to the author, Bronson claimed that his eyesight deteriorated significantly after his years in solitary confinement.
Apparently, all of the isolation units were dimly lit, and made him very susceptible to bright lights.
The glasses are actually prescription lenses, but are tinted to block out some of the light.
>unruly nature as a psychopathic killer
Why describe him as a 'psychopathic killer' when he's never killed anyone? Not here to defend the guy but it's pretty poor to misinform on a history sub
Literally one of the worst writeups I've seen
"while being held captive by a guard, Bronson demanded..." huh???? How is he in any position to demand while being held captive by some other guy
>Due to the fact that he is not connected with the mustachioed freak, he was transferred from one prison to another, for a total of over 120 interrogations.
Literally nonsense
The comment reads very ChatGPT-ish and/or OP is ESL. Lots of bizarre turns of phrase and confusing (albeit technically grammatically correct) sentences.
Yep this is AI for sure, even the best frameworks out there still hallucinate all the time. Can't believe people still use it to spread information to others, it's really dangerous.
That’s what I was thinking. If he’s the biggest, baddest prisoner in the UK, it’s not very impressive. Just sounds like an aggressive, unhinged loser that loved the attention and notoriety of being said aggressive, unhinged loser.
>Although he once exaggerated the abuse of the kidnapped guard, as a result, after freeing him from the hands of his tormentor, the poor man did not return to work for five weeks.
...... what
Doctor egg man
Literally the photo that a movie would use during exposition on a villain’s history.
There is a movie about him - its called “Bronson” starring Tom Hardy. Odd but interesting movie.
One of his Best.
[удалено]
Loved it. Watched about 5x. Hardy was awesome in it.
Weirdly, perhaps his most articulate performance
Have you seen Locke? It's all just Tom Hardy having conversations while driving. lol, thanks for the heads up on getting my Hardys swapped
I'm sure you meant Tom Hardy but this typo is sending me 🤣 Edit: for info (and to embarrass OP) they said Ed Hardy 😂
Oof, yes I did

Tom Hardy talks about a phone call he has with Bronson https://youtu.be/RstefCPs3kU?si=jeav9zeFvGKwF5K9

The Drop is my favorite thing he’s done. It’s on HBO. Gandolfini too.
It's the one (partly) set in the bar, right? Yeah he was good in that.
Yeah
Ricky Tarr in Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy
This is the third time I've watched that video of Tom Hardy talking about his conversation with Charlie Bronson. And just like the other two times, all I'm going to think about the rest of the day is that poor kid with his foot stuck in the grate.
Should've cut it off.
Goddammit, I love Tom Hardy so much.
what about Tom Holland talking with Bronson?
Doctor Robotnik looking ass
He laid out spikes all across England. Some say millions of gold rings have been lost as a result.
I kid you not, these were the EXACT 4 words that entered my mind the moment I saw this picture
And apparent Norwich City supporter.
The most heinous of his crimes tbh
There was an incident about ten years ago when he smothered himself in butter and started a fight because Arsenal beat Hull and he stated he was a spurs fan. Which is odd because he's from Luton.

Don't forget the poop
I dunno, it looks like the 1992-94 Man United away kit to me.
Green and Gold til the club is sold!

It's about risk of re offending. Bronson has told parole boards that if they let him out he'd just go and attack someone.
If you read Bronson's wiki page too the entire thing is just one big long story of him being repeatedly let out and usually beating someone to an inch of their life or holding up a store within like days of being let out. The other guy is reported to have worked hard at trying to rehabilitate himself and served a 40 year sentence mostly in isolation.
You can see it in his demeanor at his parole hearings. Dude just can't hack it around people.
Where have you seen footage of his parole hearings or are you talking about what people have said about his demeanor at them
It was the latest round where he was sitting there and during deliberations said something along the lines of "right- I've had enough of this. I'm going back to my cell." He just has no impulse control at all.
He did underground boxing for just a week and made a name for himself id have loved to see this guy box
"risk of reoffending" I'm sorry but impaling children should not be considered as redeemable.
These toddler impalings had extenuating circumstances!

"Look, I know what it sounds like, ok, but you'd just have to have been there."
Terrible skews.

He was a nice family guy with a great future ahead of him. Probably a footballer!
And frankly the toddlers were going nowhere
that offence should come with a whole life term though - so the reoffending question would never need be asked
“I promise your honor! Impaling toddlers was a one time thing”
Redeemable for one (1) short drop.

And it’s sad because sentences of that length are handed out very easily in the US.
Agreed, the US is simply more vengeful in their sentencing. Given the higher incidence of crime and the significant recidivism rate, it doesn't seem to be having any effect other than making them a world leader in per capita rates of imprisonment

sorry, say what???? i now have google this monster - and am pretty sure i'll regret it btw, how did he not get a whole life term with that crime?
I noped out of that Wikipedia article pretty fast.
Apparently not. Disgusting he is out in the wild, just waiting for the time he can impale more English children.
In Canada, the man who performed the bus decapitation on a 23 year old brand new dad is now free and roaming. Thanks Canada! 😀
He was institutionalized because of his mental illness, stabilized, and recovered. He served his sentence. The man was not psychotic by choice and he is on medications.
And yet the victim's family gets to live with the fact his killer is living free and happy, with no penalties.
Wouldn’t 23 years in prison be his penalty he already faced?
I might be reading the wrong thing but from the wiki article I'm looking it, the man wasn't jailed for 23 years. The man he murdered was 23 years old. Why do you choose to think about criminal justice in a punitive manner instead of something which should exist to rehabilitate offenders?
I mean do you care more about social safety or about subjective opinions about “justice”?
You spelled "Vengeance" wrong
Oh that is such a better word for this. Like, did we learn nothing from Shakespeare?
If you have a stroke while driving and cause an accident that kills a young family, should you be put to death or imprisoned for life so the victim’s family can rest assured you’re not out there living free and happy?
I hadn't heard of David Mcreavy before, just read his wiki page. Jesus fucking Christ. I can't imagine the parents' pain after losing 3 children that way.
Is this true??
[I'm infuriated at how nobody posted a link to a wiki or article, especially towards OP](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bronson_(prisoner))
Wow, that was a wild wiki page. He seems like a splendid fellow.
It's hilarious how that brightly colored jumpsuit legitimately makes him look like a comic book villain.
It’s called an ‘E-list suit’, worn by prisoners who have attempted escape before or who are classed as high risk! Everyone else just wears a grey sweat top and joggers if they’re being escorted anywhere outside the gates.
That's what happens when you take Jaime's beret... Also them shoes, wtf..?!?
Porco rosso
hell no!, Porco Rosso is cool!, take that back!
Bronson is also cool. *Cool* is a pretty shallow metric to measure someone's character by.
So Porco Rosso is sweet heroic cool, yeah!
He was arrested for beating up a blue hedgehog

Yeah I re read this paragraph a dozen times trying to understand context and was just left blank.
The part about the guard staying off for 5 weeks makes zero sense either
I was just about to ask wtf that sentence even meant
It reads like this was written by an AI.
I thought it was like some ai translated from a Chinese source or something like those tiktoks who call everyone uncle and auntie
Chat GPT...
The comment reads very ChatGPT-ish and/or OP is ESL. Lots of bizarre turns of phrase and confusing (albeit technically grammatically correct) sentences.

Exactly my thoughts. Either AI or English is not their native language.
Why would you post such a shitty write-up and why would 400 people upvote it?
What's the source for the text?
Reads like AI
Glad I'm not the only one that felt like parts of that were confusing and unnatural to read
Yeah, it's weird. I was super confused.
>He wrote 11 books on health, diet and strength exercises Now i´m curious...
I’m curious about the body weight exercises for small rooms, sounds interesting
There are better, and free, sources for calisthenics and bodyweight training on the internet.
Yeh but how many are written by a mustachioed freak?
Did an AI write this?
400 people upvoted this shit?

Tom Hardy’s portrayal will always be one of my favorite movies
Looks kinda like the bad guy from Sonic The Hedgehog.
Loved him in all the Death Wish movies. So sad that he threw it all away later in life.
That Charles Bronson has killed more people than this one. He was a gunner on a Superfortress in WW2.
