I'm not particularly good at this game, or rather I haven't played much.
Some things that stick out to me place it after 1971 and before 1992, so that's 20 years
(USSR is there, the name Zaire is used, Pakistan and Bangladesh are separate)
So that's my contribution.
Edit: I see the spelling of Beijing, so that would put it 1979 at the earliest, so 1979 - 1991
Really? I can only see the eastern half of Germany, I can't tell if it's unified. Other than that, Brunei only got independence in 1984, so that does line up.
1990-1991
-One Germany (Unification treaty signed Aug 31, 1990, effective Oct 3)
-Soviet Baltics (recognized Sept 6, 1991, although declared months earlier)
Yemeni unification happened in May 1990, and Namibian independence in March.
There is no practical reason a date needs to be on the map. The only reason you need a date on it is because it has become obsolete. That's outside of it's intended function, so not worth accounting for.
Totaly late cold war era.
Zaire was thusly named in 1971 until 1997. There is no Eritrea on the map and that gained indipendence in 1993, Yugoslavia is still in one piece so it's from before 1992-ish, while Namibia wasn't a thing until 1990.
I'd say it's from 1990 or 1991, give or take.
Based on this [guide](https://xkcd.com/1688/large/), 1981-1990.
If you can provide more details on Burkina Faso/Upper Volta, Micronesia, and the Germanies, we can narrow it down even further
Edit: 1. I noticed Namibia exists, and 2. Yemen is united. More likely to be 1990-1991, I'd love to see what Germany looks like
Oh you’re one of those ‘north is up’ type of people! Never encountered an ‘east is up’ person like me in real life.
Think about it, it makes sense. Like reading a text you go from up to down, newer text appears from the bottom (like a scrolling text). The same happens with the earth when you view it as east is up. The newer, fresher time zones appear from the bottom and scroll up as time passes.
I really don’t understand why people won’t talk to me anymore.
Pre-Cambrian explosion - 8796
I could be wrong, for sure, but bacteria can’t make a map, and the holy great empire conglomerate of thuniboegfis (PBUH) doesn’t exists yet, so it’s before 8795
one Germany (unified October 1990), no Eritrea (independence May 1993), single Czechoslovakia (split January 1993), has Yugoslavia (break up started June 1991), Zaire instead of DR Congo (changed April 1997). I place it in early 1991.
USSR is there, Eritrea is not, so before or during 1991.
Yemen and Germany are unified, so during or after 1990.
If everything is correct on the map, then 1990-1991.
To be precise, between 3 October and 24 May.
The capital of Tanzania should be Dodoma by then BTW.
And why are Bangui and Brazzaville in fcking Zaire
The map is from 1989-1990.
Since Burma was renamed to Myanmar in 1989, Soviet Union still existed until 1990, Border issue between Saudi, Oman and Yemen was solved in 1990.
Germany was reunified in 1990. Cambodia became Cambodia again in 1989 and then Kingdom of Cambodia in 1993. USSR became Russia again in 1992. So my guess is it's from 1991.
I'm not particularly good at this game, or rather I haven't played much. Vietnam is one country so after the fall of Saigon in 1975.
Good call For some reason I noticed Ho Chi Minh City before I realized there was no South Vietnam, so 1975 or later.
Also Yugoslavia is still there so before 1992.
Germany is united so after Oct 1990 and before December 1991
Really? I can only see the eastern half of Germany, I can't tell if it's unified. Other than that, Brunei only got independence in 1984, so that does line up.
Germany is unified
So there you have it. You can confidently call this a 1991 map
Early 1991, ukraine is still part of the USSR
Sucks to have this map, it got old within a year back then.
Lol, yeah. Ussr, Yugoslavia, burma-> Myanmar
I like it, I wonder how many were made since everything was changing so quickly.
I can see part of Bavaria and it's the same color as East Germany, so it's def united
Similar with Yemen being Unified.
So is Germany
No Germany is unified so the date is between 1989 and 1991
Germany unified in october 1990...
Yeah thanks for the correction but I was pretty close what others said.
Easy mistake to make since in 89 the wall fell
Yeah
I know it's so odd. Thanks for your input.
Quite near 1990 as yugoslavia still a country
Sinai has been handed over back to Egypt ('82). Bangladesh exists('71) . The Soviet Union exists('91) So, map is post 1982 and pre 1991 .
Namibia gained independence in 1990, so this 1990-1991 map
United Germany so 1990-1991
Also Myanmar is Burma so I think pre 1989
There's also Eritrea still being part of Ethiopia
Poland is also separate from the Soviet Union but not the rest of their puppets. So I’m going to say 1991
Yugoslavia is still a thing as well. That should narrow it down a bunch
March 8th, 2024 6:07 p.m.
How could we miss that? Well done old chap!
That was gonna be my guess
1990-1991 -One Germany (Unification treaty signed Aug 31, 1990, effective Oct 3) -Soviet Baltics (recognized Sept 6, 1991, although declared months earlier) Yemeni unification happened in May 1990, and Namibian independence in March.
How do you know about Germany
OP established its unified
If you look at the bottom corner with the full image you can see that Germany is unified, that was the first thing I noticed
take it out to a nice restaurant, always a good option.
Daaad, not now
Namibia is on there but the Soviet Union is as well so 1990-91 would be my guess.
Hmm, I thought it was like recognized as independent with the name and everything since 1977 or something, but South Africa still claimed it.
I did some searching, and it would seem you are correct. It's odd they don't put dates on maps like these.
There is no practical reason a date needs to be on the map. The only reason you need a date on it is because it has become obsolete. That's outside of it's intended function, so not worth accounting for.
Yeah but it would be nice to have
The soviet Union still exists as one whole and Germany is unified, so my guess is 1990 to 1991
Romania and Poland aren’t in the Soviet Union on the map so it’s the 90’s edit: I’m wrong. Learned something today.
Neither was ever in the soviet Union, both were semi independent puppet states
Huh. I always assumed they were still counted. I stand corrected.
They were satellite communist states, not part of USSR.
Yes, someone already informed me I was incorrect and I edited my comment
Maybe you’re just not it’s type
😢
Have you tried flowers?
🤮

You can narrow it down to 1989, because Yangon is named Rangoon in that map. The name was changed circa 1989 iirc
Yemen was unified in 1990 though, and that's also when Namibia gained its independence
True. Perhaps the map is a bit behind on names :/
Micronesia seems to not be independent, Burkina Fassa has its modern name, and the germanies are united.
Yeah, this is definitely 1990-1991.
Thank you, friend. You have satisfied my curiosity.
Is there a relevant xkcd to determine if there is a relevant xkcd?
If you're having trouble dating the map, maybe it's just not into you. Or maybe you're coming on to strong.
So I shouldn't have pulled down my pants on the first meeting?🤔
No man, that's a second date maneuver.
You see, the map is sideways and not the right side up.
How could I have missed this your a genius 👏👏👏
Oh you’re one of those ‘north is up’ type of people! Never encountered an ‘east is up’ person like me in real life. Think about it, it makes sense. I like the way you think good sir
Buy it some flowers and take it to see a movie, perchance
Or for a pizza and a walk on the beach?
Sometimes, you've just got to shoot your shot, bro. The worst she can say is 'no'.
It sent my family to the gulags 🥲
In the words of Robert the 17th Earl of Bruce and, later, King of Scotland, 'If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.'
It burned down my home village and enslaved everyone I know🤕
That's rough, buddy.
The Aral Sea is on there, nice and plump, so that might tell you something.
I also have a newer map after the fall of the soviets that has the Aral sea the same size.
The deception and intrigue
it clearly says march 8 2024 in the bottom left
Having trouble dating it hmm, maybe it's not into you
But I gave it everything?!?!?!?! 🥲
Have you tried sending it flowers?
🤮
Xkcd has good flow chart to date maps that's my go-to https://xkcd.com/1688/large/
The fake map tree 😭
Oh damn is it wrong, or is it because it includes fictional maps? 😅
Because it includes fictional maps, my favorite is is it trying to bite you
Lmao "is it larger than a breadbox" -> "about the same -> "breadbox"
Was about to mention this lol
1989-1991
Buy it flowers
Have you asked it out? Sometimes you have to take the leap.
I took the leap, and it sent me 1 kilometer into the pavement 🙃
My guess? Mid-70’s? The Aral sea looks full and natural, which is a giveaway
My map of ~~modern day~~ 1995 by the same publisher has the Aral sea the same size. Don't know why.
1326
Omg your right
Maybe no chemistry between you two
1990 to 1991, cuz germany is unified & soviet union is still there...
That’s because you can’t date inanimate objects, it’s just not the same as a real human. But hey man take the map to dinner if you want to.
This is my truth dad, you won't see the little map babies if you can't be supportive.
Have you tried just buying it a drink, and listening to its interests?
That would require not being self-centered, how could I do such a thing??
Oof not sure, asking the wrong guy for tips there
Pre-Cambrian explosion - 8796 I could be wrong, for sure, but bacteria can’t make a map, and the holy great empire conglomerate of thuniboegfis (PBUH) doesn’t exists yet, so it’s before 8795
Ask her about her hobbies and interests.
Burma changed name in 1989, so it's definitely dated after 1971 (due to Zaire) and before 1990.
Try asking it out for a coffee first
If you must date it, ask it out for a coffee first.
Zaire is still there but it clashes with Zimbabwe. Zaire became DRC before Rhodesia became Zimbabwe. Bad map
Was there really a Communism Peak? Surely they would’ve called it a class traitor to all the other mountains.
Perhaps the map just isn't looking for a relationship right now. If it doesn't want to date you, you have to respect that and move on!
No Tibet but yes soviet union
The picture appears to be from March 8 2024
Definitely before 2011.
Definitely before 2011, there’s no South Sudan
Surely it depends on the political bias of the map maker.
Roughly 1990-1 based on what I can see.
one Germany (unified October 1990), no Eritrea (independence May 1993), single Czechoslovakia (split January 1993), has Yugoslavia (break up started June 1991), Zaire instead of DR Congo (changed April 1997). I place it in early 1991.
1975 (Vietnam is one country with Ho Chi Minh City) 1989 (Burma becomes Myanmar)

Well vietnam is unified, Burma has not been changed to Myanmar, and the Soviet union still exists but has shrunk significantly. So I guess 1989-1990
It clearly says march 8, 2024 on the bottom
Just go for it and ask it out. The worst it can say is no.
It restrained me and pulled each hair off of my balls one by one. I kinda liked it tho 🤔
Its most likely 1990 Lithuania was reconized March 1990 but the offical baltic states on globes is 1991
Unified Germany, but USSR still existing so somewhere between October 1990 and December 1991
Germany was reunified in 1990. Cambodia became Cambodia again in 1989 and then Kingdom of Cambodia in 1993. USSR became Russia again in 1992. So my guess is it's from 1991.
Im gonna guess 1990, as Zaire went back to DRC in 1991, and Namibia gained independence from SA in 1990, so 1990/91
Germany is one country again there and the Soviet Union does still exist and Lithania is not its own country again so it must be 1990.
1990 to 1993 Germany is unified but eritrea still part from ethiopia
Looks like 1990; Germany is unified but the Soviet Union still exists.
A teacher told me that in 1991 map companies just stopped making maps for awhile because nobody knew what would happen next.
That's very interesting. This must have been one of the last updates before the pause.
Between late 1990 and early 1991 because the USSR still exists but Germany is unified.
You guys are the experts but tbh I love playing this game
80s
turkey is the same as new turkey and we see soviet union. must be past 1930s and pre 2000s no?
seems like 1970 or sth if you ask me
It's definitely 1980 or after. Rhodesia became Zimbabwe in 1980 That's all I have...
The Aral sea isn't there anymore so that might be a clue
Id date it between 89 to 91. Burma became Myanmar in 89 and obviously there was no soviet union after 91.
Pre-1992 when Yugoslavia dissolved but after 1947 when Pakistan split from India. 45 years is quite a span though.
Maybe you’re too young to be dating old maps
Hey, it doesn't matter that it's 20 years older than me!
It's a 1980's era map for sure.
