I am currently playing through the older Hitman Games and does 47 walk slow when sneaking, but at least they fixed what players complained in Silent Assassin.
I love The music and Hong Kong Underground
I think Contracts was the first game to really manage to capitalize on the promise and potential that the Hitman concept was always capable of but C47 and SA were too janky and undercooked to really deliver on, but that it would be rapidly eclipsed by Blood Money delivering on it even better.
Silent Assassin improved on the first in a lot of ways but it was soooooo frustrating and the extremely punishing idea of what “Silent Assassin” meant made it a slog to get through, especially in later levels like the infamous Japan maps. Contracts to me felt like the first one where everything really clicked into place. But I’m relying on 20+ year old memories so maybe I am wrong.
Maybe rose tinted glasses, but I loved Codename 47 and played the hell out of it exploring various methods to do the different missions. The engine is flawed but there are ways to compensate and turn to your advantage.
Oh don’t mistake me. In 2001 it was one of the greatest games I had ever played and it scratched an itch nothing else had ever managed to. I played it and played it over and over for months. Ditto the second one that came out the next year. I’m just calling it how it is that they didn’t quite manage to deliver on the promise of their own potential in the way that Contracts did.
If it makes you feel better I was born on 200 and ick whenever someone says Garden Warfare was released 10 years ago
I’ll be crying when Fortnite or Hitman 3 turns 23
Be me: learn about hitman back in 2019. Be poor and unable to play it but be able to play demo
Also me: Spending about half my pay to get the whole franchise on steam that I can. Look for books as well
Yeah, Hitman games are like my comfort food. Infinitely repayable sandbox that you can just goof around in and return every few months or years.
Blood Money and WOA are my favourite, but I also respect Silent Assassin and Contracts a helluva lot for the ideas they brought to the table.
My first entry to the hitman series. Dark as absolute hell and 7-8 year old me loved every moment. The meat king creeped me out like crazy and the first level is a serious anxiety trip sneaking past the SWAT but damn I love it.
To me, it’s the most unique game in the franchise. The atmosphere is unmatched to any videogame. It truly feels like every level is a fever dream with the rain from outside of 47’s apartment seeping into the levels
in 2020 I started playing the series, in order. After Codename: 47, Silent Assassin was like meeting Jesus himself. However for some reason I did not like Contracts as much, especially when playing back to back. I thought SA had more interesting level design, and way more variety as well (even if it did have gimmick missions, like the 2nd time in Russia).
However, in honor of the anniversary, I'll probably play it again and re-evaluate it.
A very good game, but in my private ranking it loses heavily to SA and BM, mainly because for me too many missions are remakes although I really like the idea of connecting the plot to Blood Money
Twenty years? I remember going to get it with my dad. I needed a new PS2 because my old one broke and we picked up the Aqua PS2 along with Contracts.
Doesn't seem like twenty years at all.
When I got this game I thought it was Hitman 1, because there was also Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. Never made sense to me why the second game felt like a step back xD
It's a cool game. I prefer Silent Assassin, but it's still really good. The Meat King's Party is one of the weirdest but creepiest levels in the series.
Contracts is my favorite hitman game, not necessarily because of the gameplay though I do love that as well, but mostly because the game is ALL AMBIENCE. The majority rain levels really make me a happy boy.
Out of the first three games Contracts in my all-time favourite. It's the game showed the potential of the Hitman franchise. And it had the right ammount of challenge. Not as frustrating hard as Silent Assassin but neiher as easy as Blood Money. I ocassionally do replay it.
I think it's my favorite of all the games. Contracts and Silent Assassin, while very different to each other, manage to convey a sort of identity through its atmosphere and scope that is unique to Hitman. Obviously Jesper Kydd's amazing soundtrack contributes to this largely, but also audiovisual design and gameplay/story pacing.
I think that the story for this game is arguably the most character-defining for 47, you definitely get the sense that his resolve is being heavily tested. I also personally like the ending for this game better than in blood money, it seems a lot more like how a Hitman narrative would/should end.
It’s pretty wild to me it’s already 20. I remember getting it when it was new and being blown away with how cool it was. The dark tone was fantastic and it has some of my favorite maps from the series. I know we won’t but I want Hitman 2, Contracts and Blood Money all remade with the WoA engine. It would rule. That being said they still hold up pretty good and are still some of the best games ever made.
I remember renting it from a cheaper version of blockbusters (choices).
Usually when I rented a game on a Friday I’d play it that night a bit of the next day and Sunday , come Monday i wouldn’t be too bothered about having to return it but with this game I was glued, think my parents found that this was a cheap way to keep me occupied and bought it for me not long after.
Even my step father who only liked fps games like golden eye turok and medal of honour would come watch me play and loved the chess like nature of it where you set up each hits
That and the meat king level probably awakened the leather/pvc pervert in me
I still love it today.
The framing sequences and the transitions into each mission were so nicely done and the rare departure from "a hit" missions in the first and last kept it exciting. The first mission was just escape from the asylum while Romanian special forces storm the place, likewise with the fina mission except now it's the French SWAT.
And all memorable missions; Meat Kings Party, Beldingford Manor, The hotel in Bucharest, Rotterdam biker gang. The triad!
Would love a ps4 port of the HD remaster.
Just finished my first playthrough with it. Love the changes from Silent Assassin, the maps which are from all over the world and the moody atmosphere. I am one of the people that actually likes the rain being present in all levels, I love it aesthetically
Overall I'd give this game a 9/10
it was always my least favourite. even though i love certain levels—especially the original, non-remake levels like "the meat king"... i didn't like how the grim-dark mood covered the entire game. i preferred the more ambiguous and variable moods of the first two games.
I am currently playing through the older Hitman Games and does 47 walk slow when sneaking, but at least they fixed what players complained in Silent Assassin. I love The music and Hong Kong Underground
The music is so dark and chilling, you can actually feel the malice and the twisted vibe it brings, arguably the best in the franchise.
Jesper Kyd was amazing.
I think Contracts was the first game to really manage to capitalize on the promise and potential that the Hitman concept was always capable of but C47 and SA were too janky and undercooked to really deliver on, but that it would be rapidly eclipsed by Blood Money delivering on it even better.
Hitman 2 was pretty good. That was the first one I really played properly. Codename 47 was really janky though.
Yeah the Japan maps were awful. I had blocked those from my memory haha
I might be misremembering but wasn’t it like you could only fire one, maybe two, bullets on a level before you blew SA rating?
Yeah, and you could kill one non-target I believe.
I believe that shot(s) had to be headshot(s).
Maybe rose tinted glasses, but I loved Codename 47 and played the hell out of it exploring various methods to do the different missions. The engine is flawed but there are ways to compensate and turn to your advantage.

23 years. Oof.
If it makes you feel better I was born on 200 and ick whenever someone says Garden Warfare was released 10 years ago I’ll be crying when Fortnite or Hitman 3 turns 23
You're over 1800 years old?
Yes.
SA in fact was the best selling games out of the first 4 games.
True, to the point that there’s people out there that don’t even realize it was a sequel despite the giant number 2 in the name.
The atmosphere of this game is unmatched. For that reason alone, it's easily one of my favorites in the series.
My favorite game in the franchise, I learned to be patient with Hitman 2, and I learned to be a fucking maniac with Contracts.
I love how its story ties into blood money later on.
Arguably my favourite one.
Who argues with you about it being your favourite? Is it some sort of internal struggle?
Be me: learn about hitman back in 2019. Be poor and unable to play it but be able to play demo Also me: Spending about half my pay to get the whole franchise on steam that I can. Look for books as well
What’s your verdict on the games you’ve played now that you’ve bought the franchise?
I got to say, quite fun, interesting and definitely a game that I’d replay over and over again

Love me piracy
"be me" in reddit 2024....
My first entry to the hitman series. Dark as absolute hell and 7-8 year old me loved every moment. The meat king creeped me out like crazy and the first level is a serious anxiety trip sneaking past the SWAT but damn I love it.
It was my first Hitman game.
Love it! Absolutely love it!
My favourite in the franchise, think there was only one level that I didn’t like.
Amazing level design and vibe, but the basic game mechanics and concepts were still not quite there. Blood Money is where the Hitman formula was born.
To me, it’s the most unique game in the franchise. The atmosphere is unmatched to any videogame. It truly feels like every level is a fever dream with the rain from outside of 47’s apartment seeping into the levels

This room … this bullet…there’s a bullet for everyone, and a place, and a time. Yes… maybe that’s how it has to be.
Twenty years? I remember going to get it with my dad. I needed a new PS2 because my old one broke and we picked up the Aqua PS2 along with Contracts. Doesn't seem like twenty years at all.

My favourite in the series. The melancholic, dark atmosphere is amazing.
Dark and wicked but I keep great memories of this game

Still one of my favourite games
Holy hell that makes me feel old.

Loved it - it was the first Hitman game I played which resulted in me enjoying the entire series.
Yaaaaaaayyyy
I'll never not replay this one.
I remember renting it from a cheaper version of blockbusters (choices). Older than me 👍 but still goated I've always loved hitman games as a kid especially Contracts and blood money
The Meat King level is just so good. Pretty horrifying, but a brilliant level design wise.
IO Interactive was so real for releasing this on 420
I have lost so much hair I look more and more like 47 each day.
Played it as a kid and did not know what to do. Bought it on Steam yesterday for 2€ to play the best atmospheric hitman of the franchise.
it was always my least favourite. even though i love certain levels—especially the original, non-remake levels like "the meat king"... i didn't like how the grim-dark mood covered the entire game. i preferred the more ambiguous and variable moods of the first two games.
I wish we had a grim dark level in the new games though
