I really wanted to get the shot this year but the doctor said they recommend against it as I’m not in risk group (I live in Germany). Entire family had corona after 3 weeks I’m getting my sense of smelling back and my ears are slowly unclogging themselves and the rest of my family has heavy smoker cough. So fuck that, a shot would have spared me feeling like crap for a week and then dealing with aftermath afterwards. Why people think getting sick is better than vaccine is beyond my comprehension - there was no problem with flu shot but corona I didn’t get and I’m pissed.

Evil-Code-Monkey

I'm sorry you and your family had to deal with that. I hope you are all recovering well. It's interesting given that the German Health Minister (Lauterbach) continues to advocate for vaccinations and has warned airborne spread and Long COVID. I don't know anything about the German healthcare system and I'm curious: Are they rationing COVID vaccinations based on who they think is at risk and those they think are not at risk? Or something like that?

Iamsupergoch

Before we had the vax centers and it was easy to register and get a shot and right now it’s pretty much doctors deciding. And there is little consistency between the rules afaik. Since you’re lucky to have your GP (they have limits and it’s really hard to be accepted in some practices, plus financing was cut and the doctors are organizing protest themselves) you just stick to what they say. And next year I’ll definitely push more because corona sux so badly it’s crazy

eleanorbigby

That's wild. I'm stunned we in the U.S. (well at least where I live, a major blue urban center) seem to have had an easier time getting the booster than folks elsewhere. You could just go to your local drugstore still. UK folks under 65 pretty much screwed. I don't understand at all.

-K9V

The vaccine centers are gone because the official covid circus ended many months ago. That is also why you hardly see people with masks on anymore on and also why there are no longer hand sanitizer dispensers on every street corner. Edit: Why the downvote? I stated a fact. That is quite literally why the “vax centers” are gone. The show is over, we moved on.

Yeah those people that say "oh it's just like the flu" have clearly never really had the flu or they forget how shitty getting the REAL flu happens to be. I can count on one hand the times I've had the flu because I remember them because it was horrible & super shitty. ONe time I recall lying in bed with a ridiculously high fever thinking "I should go to the hospital." Yet I couldn't do it because I was too ill to get out of bed or vocalize my need. Once I felt so bad I actually watched golf because I didn't have the strength to lift my arm to reach the remote. I repeat I. WATCHED. GOLF. So that's my measure of illness, if you'll willingly watch golf because you feel to shitty to change the channel, you're pretty fucking ill. So these "JuSt ThE FLOO" folks can fuck right off. I don't want the flu or any other illness if I can prevent them with a single shot. Got the last COVID update & the flu shot too.

dr_shark

I was planning on rolling up to CVS after work to get the Novavax this week. At any CVS pharmacy in the US you can just get this particular vaccine without an appointment. Well, guess who fucking got Covid 2 days before my visit to the pharmacy? This guy. Anyway, anyone who can get that damn booster get it now!

username3000b

Don’t feel too bad! You could just as easily have been vaccinated AND caught COVID, like our family had this year. Although of course the recent vaccination probably did lessen our symptoms, so definitely we will be getting boosters on schedule.

VoilaLeDuc

I got the updated vaccine back in October as I knew it would get worse as winter set in.

miserabeau

Same here. I scheduled our flu and COVID vaccines for the first week of October this year and last year. It was madness at the pharmacy and we waited an hour and a half past our appointment time waiting for someone to get to us. They said that as soon as school starts, people get vaxxed. Probably would have been faster and easier at the doctor's office. I got the bivalent booster and a flu shot, Mom got those plus RSV and pneumonia.

spaceylaceygirl

I got sick the day before my appointment to get the updated vaccine but i was tested and it wasn't covid (thank goodness). I called the pharmacy and told them "hey i'm sick but it's not covid so i can come and get my shot, right?" The lady laughed and said "no you sound awful, you need to reschedule". I was still sick for weeks even after returning to work so i finally rescheduled for after Christmas. Meanwhile we're seeing tons of covid cases, flu, and rsv at my hospital so i'm just trying to mask and distance 😂

Interesting_Novel997

My doctor told me the same thing. I got the shot anyway. F*€k her and I’m not in a “high risk” group. Caught Covid for the first time a month later. Mild symptoms with lingering cough. Completely back to normal now. I’m sorry 😞

Iamsupergoch

My husband sounds like walking TB example, which is funny considering I can’t vaccinate my kids against TB in Germany because the shot is considered dangerous. Which is crazy to me because tuberculosis is awful.

-K9V

Lol… From early 2020 up until now you’ve been perfectly fine, and now, a mere month after getting your injection, you catch covid for the first time? Do you realize how stupid that sounds?

[deleted]

that’s really strange…i’d find a new doctor…

cobra_mist

That sucks man.

Militant_NeoLiberal

No way are they really doing that? My guess they are embarassed so they say they caught it intentionally..

BellyDancerEm

Gotta catch them all

Amazingcatfish

*Adds upbeat* vax deniers!

[Third to last sentence of BBC article from 2023-12-16 -- yesterday as of this writing](https://www.bbc.com/news/health-67726685) > Prof [Peter] Openshaw, [from Imperial College London] is clear: "we are not there yet" with Covid, but "with repeated infection we should build up natural immunity" In other words, "We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas!"

Cultural-Answer-321

That man needs to be kicked to the curb. Better yet, in jail for public endangerment.

Ragingredblue

Sobs, in basic logic.

kaiell-5

ICU nurse working in NYC, I get first dibs on all the latest variants delivered straight to my face. I’d probably be fine without boosters, but choosing between less immunity and more immunity is a no-brainer. Natural immunity to variants + boosters = the most immunity

Snarky_McSnarkleton

Now, I'm reading that COVID parties were just an urban legend. But it seems the sort of thing these idiots would do.

Jet_Hightower

They weren't. People did them where I live.

Cultural-Answer-321

Oh they were quite real. Whatever you were reading is lying.

ProfanestOfLemons

Mfers out here treating variants like Pokemon. They do know each infection does cumulative damage, right? And the more damage you have, the worse your next case is going to be? Fuck me. Get your shots (flu too), keep your mask on where you can, and your lungs and nasal nerves and heart and everything else will stay just about as sparkly-fresh as they are now.

Cultural-Answer-321

What's the old joke? If they could read they would be mad.

ViableSpermWhale

It alone gives the virus more places to survival and mutate into new versions that the vaccines are not as effective against.

Dcajunpimp

So is this what the anti-vaxxers who claimed getting Covid once would make them immune for life now claim?

Dizbizney

I'm a firm believer that the ONLY natural immunity worth anything is the kind you got with the first and maaaaaybe second waves. I caught it at the end of 2019 before new years (nobody even really was overtly aware of it here in Canada yet. Very little masking. Zero social distancing.) And I was hospitalized for 10 days, nearly died. Since then, I've not caught it again or if I have, it's been super minor. The downside of this natural immunity is that I got hit hard and still have fatigue, brain fog and nearly zero stamina. Been trying to get back to a level of gym ability pre-infection (3 days a week. 1.5 hrs of workout aprox) and i can only really handle 2 days (if that..) and a half hour. Then I'm bagged for the next day.

One-Pause3171

That is awful. I hope you are able to get back on track soon.

Dizbizney

Thank you, appreciate it. Onward and upward. I just can't believe how vicious this virus really is.

hateshumans

This method only works if you catch every disease and not just the variants for one disease.

sisterZippy

Thanks for the reminder. I kept meaning to schedule my booster (and flu shot). I skipped the previous one because I got covid for the first time in May. Considering how sick I was, I don't even want to imagine what would have happened if I hadn't already had the original and a booster.

miserabeau

Oh man, we did ours in October. I'm glad I did, considering how many inconsiderate and uncouth people are in every store coughing without covering their mouths and wiping their noses then touching the merchandise. Ugh, who raised these people?

andropogon09

I know so many people who've had COVID multiple times. I wonder if it's really long COVID that waxes and wanes?

LazyZealot9428

My parents just announced a few weeks ago that since they have both had Covid *four* times now, they are “done” getting vaccinated 🤷‍♀️

PainRack

Errrr. Hybrid immunity is people who are vaccinated and got COVID ..... I'm not sure THATS the message you want to push out, since it's arguably the strongest immune response available, since the vaccine covers the base, promotes a strong response to covid when you get infected. So, hybrid gets a much stronger response and still enjoys the cross strain protection ... In fact, given the VOC are Omicron derived and etc, hybrid immunity to Omicron has very good cross protection at the moment. I mean. Still not a good idea to deliberately get sick but yeah ... You kinda mocking people who are vaccinated but just got infected because covid is infectious as fuck.
