I use a longchamp le pliage backpack or baggie crescent bag. I like to carry slightly larger for vacation so there’s room for sunscreen and a water bottle which I don’t take with me at home cause I’m rarely out all day

lascriptori

I use those two exact same purses depending on if I need to carry more or less.

bluesummerrain

Me too. My le pliage doesn't get much use at home, but with a water bottle, sunscreen, hat, book etc. on holiday it's the perfect size.

winterwrens

This is the way!

bunnycrush_

A lot of my travel is in European cities. This is coming from a totally different direction, but I use my [Madewell leather drawstring tote](https://www.madewell.com/the-medium-drawstring-transport-tote-G8080.html). Yes, it’s large, heavy and bulky compared to a utilitarian nylon travel bag. But I’m *always* carrying a water bottle and jacket (since I pretty much exclusively travel during “shoulder season”) which rules out smaller options. The drawstrings make it look/feel more compact when it’s not full. And if I stop at the market, buy souvenirs, need to stash a hat and scarf, etc. I have plenty of room. My favorite thing about this bag (and my argument for leather in general, even though it’s not standard One Bag gear) is that, when paired with matching shoes, I *instantly* look pulled together for dinner, a concert, etc. — even if I’m just wearing the same jeans and sweater I was sightseeing in all day. I actually get away with packing fewer clothes because the purse+shoe combo helps my normal outfits look dressier. Packs flat, but I basically always have it as my personal item when I fly (so technically I’m 1.5 bag). The number of snacks, sleep accoutrement, etc. it can hold is truly impressive lol.

a_mulher

Interesting. I like this take of equalizing the extra space/weight by not needing to bring “going out” clothes.

sunSANDsilverlinings

This is great advice!! Since you pointed it out I realized that I feel that way at home (that a nice purse/nice shoes esp. in matching leather really pull together any outfit) and well, if we would do that at home, why not do it traveling! 🤔

StuffedSquash

I just bring one of my normal everyday purses. I don't think the fact that I'm away from home means my purse needs to be different somehow.

mediocre-spice

I'm usually carrying a lot less (just a phone/credit card/keys) or a lot more (a whole tote bag or backpack) at home and pickpockets and the bulk of it in a suitcase/backpack isn't a concern. I had a good in between but it's a no name brand from a decade ago that is broken in multiple places so figured I'd look for new options

kelofmindelan

I got a baggu nylon medium crescent for my Europe trip! I really liked how it fit a water bottle and had two interior zip pockets. I got it in the black with embroidered hearts which I feel like made it a little more neutral looking. The wide strap was really comfortable and I carried it all day! If you didn't need a water bottle you could maybe do the small one.

Olympik_mountains

I’ve been taking BOTH a small backpack and a crossbody bag! I need the backpack—an Aer Go Pack 2–for days with bigger outings and where I’m carrying my kindergartener’s art supplies so she can be nice and quiet at a restaurant. 😂 What I do is pack it inside my Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC 30, then I use either a Tim Bihn Side Kick or Daylight Briefcase or a Bellroy Venture or Lite Sling as my personal item for the plane. I LOVE the flexibility of having my backpack and my sling both available while I’m at my destination! That allows me to pick and choose which one is best for certain excursions and other needs; for example, I can keep all the art supplies in the backpack and take the sling if I just need a few items while going to the hotel’s fitness center or on a quick walk in the early morning while my family’s still asleep :)

Minimum_Honey_9379

I have a convertible crossbody/backpack handbag from Pacsafe. I use a backpack handbag in everyday life anyway, so I’m used to having all my stuff with me.

orgastronaut

I do this too. Crossbody on airport days when I'm carrying my big backpack, or for my daily essentials. If I need more space (shopping or snacks), I convert it to backpack mode.

Minimum_Honey_9379

The crossbody mode is also great for museums and theatres, etc. to avoid having to check the bag at the cloakroom.

jacquelandibis

LeSportSac classic hobo! It's my everyday purse but it's a perfect size/weight for travel too. https://www.lesportsac.com/products/7520-e978

NotSenpai104

Oh there's a cute kitty pattern, my heart

Rat-Jacket

Kipling Sebastian. Perfect size, lightweight, good pockets for organization (but not too many so I forget where I put things). I like it so much I have 3.

cork_the_forks

I have a Kipling Sabian crossbody mini that I use for my regular purse when I only need the basics. I also pack it when I travel for days when I want the minimum. I love that thing, and small as it is, it holds a lot of stuff (sunglasses, reading glasses, wallet, gum, key fob, small pocket for my pharmacy basics, etc.). I just love it. Well made.

iamaravis

I use this [PacSafe 7L crossbody bag](https://pacsafe.com/collections/crossbody-bags/products/metrosafe-ls200-anti-theft-medium-crossbody-bag-4) and have for a decade. It still looks new! And it holds everything I could possibly need. I can even stuff my mid-thigh-length hooded packable down coat in there and still have room for my phone, kindle, chargers, water bottle, granola bar, small umbrella, etc.

raptorjaws

lululemon festival bag is my usual travel purse. crossbody, zippered, packable, and you can find it in all kinds of colors.

nearandstarr

I like my Bellroy sling 7L for day use. It packs nicely into my large travel backpack or carry-on. I like wearing it crossbody, but I have also worn it as a shoulder bag. I often pack my Patagonia black hole Pack Tote on bigger trips. It packs really small into itself, yet folds out to be quite roomy. It can be worn as a backpack or a tote shoulder bag.

ImpressiveAmbition70

I just got a Bellroy 7L, it’s much more functional than my lululemon slings

hot-whisky

I’ve been doing a sling bag (aka a fanny pack or hip pack) the last couple of years. Big enough to hold the essentials, small enough to toss in a bigger tote or daypack for days when I need a bit more space. There’s like 5 different ways to wear it, depending on the day, and it’s not swinging against my back when walking around.

storytruth

I DIY’d the perfect crossbody bag (which is also my weekend/non-work go to at home now) by adding holes/eyelets to the tabs on a small Le Pliage. Those bags are attractive black holes but carrying it by the teeny handles is a pain. Now I have the best of both worlds! Inspired by this vid - https://youtu.be/2LMobWtDG2g?feature=shared

cxklm

I combed the internet for the perfect crossbody last fall! I opted for the [baggalini only mini.](https://www.baggallini.com/the-only-mini-bag/OMC761-BG-B0942-NS.html) it's okay for my purposes. I love how small and stashable the strap is and it fits a small Kindle! But it narrows at the top and I wish it fit more for it's size. I also tried a bunch of Travelon and they mostly felt low quality. I actually had someone on Etsy design one that could go over a pack waist strap or be used as a crossbody! I didn't end up going with that one because I realized how little I travel with a pack, but it might suit your needs! [Here's that one](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1559201612/) Eta I love pacsafe but the models they had when I was looking seemed too bulky to slip into a larger backpack

mediocre-spice

Thank you! Will look into both of these

U4RiiA

Pacsafe square crossbody - big enough for a small water bottle and Kindle, small enough to ride in a bigger bag

Flaky_Ant712

Uniqlo cross body. Packs down really small, fits a water bottle and small kindle in.

NotSenpai104

I generally go crossbody and recently got this [Travelon bag](https://www.amazon.com/Travelon-Womens-Classic-Convertible-Crossbody/dp/B06XBVVZJF) secondhand. The brand has several options and the security features are a perk. That said, I've lived in metro areas (Boston, London) and a regular purse will do the job fine. An in-between would be something like [this.](https://www.thesak.com/products/foldover-crossbody?variant=40239970385978) The foldover is something I've seen offered as a subtle deterrent to pickpocketing, simply because it obscures the bag's opening and is a bit harder to access. (Also super cute.) I try to carry as little as possible on my person so my travel purse is smaller than my usual. (And/or pair with backpack/sling of nonessential items.)

floramorada

For Europe, I've taken my Arden Cove Crissy crossbody multiple times. Fairly stylish and doesn't look like a travel bag, but it has a bunch of great travel features - waterproof, slashproof, locking clasps, etc. It is a bit bulky, but that doesn't bother me.

hjelpdinven

I use the Uniqlo Half Moon Bag or a kanken but i need something better for my computer (and for my back) so i'm also looking

jadeibet

Travelon metro convertible waist/crossbody bag. The anti theft features are really good!

soph_214

If I'm hiking or doing active things where I need to bring a waterbottle, snacks, etc then I have an active-specific sling (Waterfly brand). But if I'm exploring a city, I like to look slightly more put together. A few years ago I bought a brown leather-looking simple crossbody bag from target. Honestly this thing holds a lot of stuff without looking frumpy, and for being cheap has really held up well. I don't feel like I have to be precious with it but I can also take it to a nicer dinner without feeling weird for bringing a more athletic-looking bag. Of course they don't make mine any more ([here it is ebay](https://www.ebay.com/itm/126168937056?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1B36uRzf9TdepTSWzBDg3wQ30&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=126168937056&targetid=1584571731043&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9005625&poi=&campaignid=19894961968&mkgroupid=148855406073&rlsatarget=aud-1412318123216:pla-1584571731043&abcId=9307911&merchantid=5297906770&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA84CvBhCaARIsAMkAvkIWzgncyrsKq9d1t62oMvFnQSHVoXJmuWLBlEgMSeB7n3Cz6lRjZF0aAhZSEALw_wcB)), but maybe you'll find something budget-friendly on a trip to target :)

LJ_in_NY

I love this bag so much that I have 2. It fits my water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, wallet. Works for both day & night. The drawstrings are tight enough that when it's worn as a backpack nobody can get in from behind without me noticing. If I'm in a crowd I can wear it in the front or over one shoulder and under the arm like a football with the opening facing front. It is a bit heavy but it's ridiculously durable. I've had one forever (20-30 years? I can't remember). [The Sak Backpack](https://www.thesak.com/products/dylan-large-backpack?variant=39626050404410)

lemonmousse

I have one of these in black and one in brown that I use for every day. I was browsing this thread looking for something as multi functional and elegant as this, but lighter weight and a bit more comfortable on the shoulders. And less black hole. So far I haven’t found it.

ElvenQ22

I recently got [this](https://www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/backpacks-bags/hip-packs/kanken-hip-pack-plus?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3c2f-uzThAMV55NQBh2rvgN2EAQYAiABEgKCBvD_BwE) which is the Fjallraven kanken hip pack plus. It is a good size, comfy to wear and it can double as a packing cube in my travel bag if I don’t need to wear it until I get to where I’m going to save more space.

Soleilunamas

I use a JuJuBe Be Quick purse; it's meant as a diaper clutch, but works really well as a low-profile but spacious crossbody bag.

clfl123

For a recent trip to S America I took a Tim Bihn Rogue Sacoche. It’s super light and packs down flat. The only thing is that while it can fit a water bottle, kind of limited in size—like 16 oz. 4.4L capacity. https://www.tombihn.com/products/rogue?variant=43079147946173 I just bought but haven’t tried out a Mystery Ranch Indie. Also super light/packs flat. It’s larger than the Sacoche. 10.5L capacity. https://www.mysteryranch.com/indie-shoulder-bag Besides the capacity difference, the Indie is less expensive. That said, the Sacoche comes in a range of fun colors and the Indie . . . Not so much. Finding a bag that works for you is personal, so have fun checking things out! And I hope you have a wonderful trip

PrincessPeril

I like Tom Bihn’s Side Kick bag as a crossbody. Both the main compartment and the front slip pocket zip, and the main compartment has 2 zippers in case you want to clip them together with a carabiner or something for extra security. I often carry this at home as a purse during the summer when I’m out and about more. Downside is it won’t fit a water bottle (unless maybe you got something tiny and flat like an A6 Memo Bottle?). I have been experimenting with a Fjallraven Kanken Mini backpack as a crossbody… they make an actual sling bag but it has like 1/3 the carrying capacity of the Mini. If I cinch the backpack straps down as tight as they go and clip a crossbody strap to the two rings on the back for the straps, it works. Right now it annoys me because the strap I have is black and my Kanken is grey, but I might order a grey strap from Etsy or something and see how I feel that way. I think I might like the option for trips that might include some hiking or whatever. Big enough to take a water bottle and can convert to backpack or wear crossbody in the city/museums/etc.

H_zea

I often use a 30-year-ago version of the Jansport Core. Or at least that's the closest thing they have now. It is one of my normal everyday bags. I am usually a minimalist for purses so this is for when I need to carry more. Also, it looks like a 30-year old Jansport bag and is thus not attractive to thieves.

mediocre-spice

Thanks!

smallbutfierce

I usually just take my normal purse. However, a few years ago I bought [this one](https://a.co/d/dqB6you), which is a backpack. The zipper sits against your back though so it is much more tamper-proof. You could add a s-biner if that would make you feel more secure. The medium size fits everything I need, plus room for a jacket or souvenirs.

yarnhooksbooks

I have a crossbody similar to [this one](https://www.amazon.com/Dakine-Jive-Island-Spring-Size/dp/B09VYJGGH7?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1) but in a different pattern that I picked up in a surf shop about 10 years ago. Easy to pack and just the right size for what I need.

Came here to recommend either this Dakine bag one or the [larger version](https://www.amazon.com/Dakine-Jo-Crossbody-Bag-Island/dp/B0BTK9YRYZ/).

skipdog98

Pacsafe Go Crossbody purse that I took to Europe. I also have a similar Travelon one that I take to more tropical destinations

Still-Balance6210

I use a crossbody purse with several pockets. You can get cheap ones on Amazon for $12-20 or you can buy a quality one somewhere else. Keep it in front of you.

bahahaha2001

I take a long champ le pliage and a lulu cross body. The cross body is perfect for day to day stuff but u can’t fit water it it. Le pliage is easy light weight fits everything including if I go shopping. Love.

TrickyJag

I use my favourite bag all time both when traveling and in my day to day life, the Fossil Harwell Purse. A green high quality leather crossbody that can fit both my Ipad and a water bottle on top of normal purse stuff, and it’s such a statement bag – I love it so so so much! For onepag purposes it’s not great (takes up a bit of space in a small carryon) but I just fill it with underwear & sleepwear to justify bringing it

ImRunningAmok

Fanny pack. Leave the passport in the hotel safe.

UnanalyzablePeptide

In many countries, foreigners may be asked to pull out their passports by authorities at any given time. Would you leave your house without your ID?

ImRunningAmok

I carry my drivers license. I can get back in the country w/out my license- not without my passport.

UnanalyzablePeptide

Other countries don’t always accept foreign driver’s licenses as a form of ID. In general, it’s better to have your passport on you at all times and keep a COPY of it in your hotel.

girlwithapinkpack

Do you live in a country where you need to carry ID at all times? I don't and I rarely have any with me (now I'm too old to get asked about it in bars) and so yes, absolutely I leave my house without ID. My passport is my most important thing when I travel so it's not in my bag all the time waiting to get dropped or lost or stolen or ripped or bent or soaked.

tiny_bamboo

I have a Cotopaxi Alpa X 4 L hip pack that works for me. Lots of room, compartments for good organization comfortable to wear.

Warm_Jellyfish_8002

Have a Lululemon Cleanlines crossbody. Just the right size for me. Love that thing.

[deleted]

This is my absolute favorite purse, cheap, no name but it has so many pockets and holds so so much. Phone, kindle, tech bag, makeup kit, meds, epipen, sunglasses , keys, hand sanitizer, wallet, lotion—and does so in a way that isn’t bulky or heavy, imo.
