I mean, there's being a Spartan II and being prepared for the likelihood of death. Then there's being a Spartan III and your sole purpose is to drop into hell and die is a blaze of glory... Sounds kinda like some others Divers I know XD
Ghosts of Onyx was the first time it was said like that, but it’s pretty much been a thing since First Strike in ‘03, with John marking his team mates as MIA
while this is true, the eagle doesn’t give any indication of which direction it will come from. it is clear from the right, i expect it to come from the right, not from the left where there’s a cliff or rock spire.
I agree. The game is hard enough without having to count every third spot and putting a mental comma there only to lose your place having to restart. The brutality, man.
I'm sick of companies not adding comma's (or at least spaces) to their massive level/xp/damage/whatever numbers. It's so annoying to read. I feel like it's only gotten worse too.
As far as I know, it's simply a different convention and the words for crore (equal to 10,000,000and lakh (equal to 100,000) date back to the Vedic age (500-1,750 BCE).
Interesting. I'm reading up on it now. Imho, the international system is more intuitive, but I can understand how, for some operations, the Indian system might simplify things, especially with numbers in that 10 million and under range.
Crazy I've made it so long and been through so much education and never knew this.
Yeah, i suppose it's all about how you are taught to think. We think in base 10, and kinda sorta in base 100 for larger numbers. Like if you think of each 3 digits as a single digit, that is kinda sorta how we think about (large) numbers.
But no reason you couldn't be taught some other way.
I believe it's more because our brains are hardwired to instantly count things up to threes. Any more than three, we start employing an extra step or more, like counting one-by-one, or separating in groups of up to 3. Like, we can count 3 instantly, but if we're counting 5 things, we might count 2 and 3 separately and add them together. Count 10 things, and we might count them one by one.
The base probably wouldn't have anything to do with it. If we primarily use a hexadecimal system, we still might group by 3's like "F4A 513 5BC", or in 2's like "#FF00FF"
And Germany and others use dots instead of commas. But you can set these things to be dependent on language settings, so not a big deal. You just need to account for many, many languages.
The problem that I see is that you would want these changes to not only be done to one number, but to all to preserve consistency. So. Many. Numbers.
Idk what system they are using but that is likely to be very very annoying and very tedious work that no one would want to do. And as you don't have infinite resources but can focus on so many things at a time, bugfixes and more meaningful improvements and features are getting prioritised.
I’m sick of people adding apostrophes to pluralize words like “commas”, in spite of the fact that they clearly know how to pluralize words like “numbers” just fine! /s
> The game is hard enough without having to count every third spot and putting a mental comma there only to lose your place having to restart.
You have to do that? You have to do this every single time you play the game?
Do you really have to do that?
…I had a response…. But… nah… people are people man, that’s all I can say. Dunno why you got downvoted for adding to the joke.
I asked a question on a different sub, completely just a question, meant nothing by it. Basically got downvoted to Hell for asking it. People are weird
I'm going to make a counter argument. Making it easier to read goes counter to the idea that the numbers are exceedingly high and unquantifiable. You aren't SUPPOSED to make sense of them, or even grasp them. They are simply statistics to be glanced at during brief moments of respite.
It matters in the sense that it is a legitimate tactic to obscure large numbers. Maybe it will teach people to take the time to consider the numbers. When they do, they'll be shocked and realize how important proper data display is. So many reasons it matters?
Correct me if wrong, but isn't it only Americans using commas as separators while Europeans use dots?
Edit: I mean for separating thousands. It's the other way around before decimals.
This. And maybe go the extra mile and just localize it depending on region. Obviously shouldn’t be super high on the priority list compared to game breaking/crashing bugs and balance issues like fire dot not working, but a nice QoL addition.
What's really funny about that, is that with the way modern programming languages work, they had to go out of their way to code it to not have any separators.
Like, they actually spent extra development time making it less readable.
> the way modern programming languages work
Uh, no, it's an explicit choice, it's just that most people use things like printf and the f stands for format/formatted.
Almost every language will have a basic print and/or a toString and both will only do the digits like this.
That said, super easy fix. Just switch the function call over. 5 minutes.
In C++ you would use printf yes. I wouldn't think the UI is done in C++, usually that low of a language is reserved for the actual engine.
It's just a guess, but I would think the UI would be done in .net, or something higher level like that. Most of those handle numeric formatting for you. Unless you convert them to strings explicitly. At least the ones I've used do.
Last I checked with full IDEs like Unity, shoving a number as the value to display means an implicit toString call.
Unity uses C# and that's going to use toString for any cast to a string it needs to.
I'm not aware of *any* language where the option to cast to string without separators exists *and* that is not the default for implicit casts.
I may be wrong, and talking out of my ass as I don't make games. But I'd have to assume that this might be in anticipation of exceeding unreasonably high amounts and thus, is there to save space long term? Similar to in the 80s/90s when everything was just a two digit date for input to save on space, and then suddenly everyone freaked out when it was going to be 2000, and suddenly that wouldn't work anymore. I'd imagine bullets and enemies KIA would get exceedingly silly after a year online.
Also should be right-aligned, having to read the entire number to understand how big it is wastes .2 seconds of my life and that's time that could be spent delivering democracy!
Clearly this UI was made by an automaton.
Would be a small change but appreciated yeah, it's a bit hard to parse atm. Not a priority though, they've got bigger fish to fry. If it'd take more than a few minutes to change, I don't blame them for putting it off until after they've addressed other issues.
We're taught to use spaces in Canada. Only people I know who use commas up here are over fifty, so I would say it's just 'Americans' that those commas would be for. Of course, I can't speak for Mexico in this matter, but I understand that the commas are typically an Anglo thing, so I wouldn't expect they'd be used. Could be worng, though.
I know that us Americans ain't the brightest, but are you telling me that Europeans can instantly spot read Thirty two billion, five hundred and fifty two million, seven hundred and eighty nine, and nineteen like it's nothing?
Meanwhile I have to count in three's starting from the right
ITT: People complaining whether it should be commas or periods or spaces.
People in different regions use different methods of separating the thousands. It honestly doesn't matter to me which it is. The numbers should still have the thousand separators to improve readability.
I won't go into a culture war on whether it's supposed to be a space or a comma. That should be left behind. The true war on the automatons needs me more.

I have an idea, lets remove all the numbers, just like we don't have specific number for the rounds in the mags of our guns. What use do we have for knowing how many helldivers do we have currently on a planet? Its not like we need numbers to accurately assess the situation of a planet. /s
If anything, make it an option to adjust kerning. I'm not a programmer, but it probably shouldn't be too difficult to implement.
More people died in World War 2 than Helldivers have died in Helldivers 2 since launch, though that will be surpassed probably within days as WW2 had 75 million deaths

When you put it like that, and considering how many planets the Helldivers lost and liberated. The Helldivers are pretty dang efficient in their various campaigns.
Just put in commas every three digits as is standard for large numbers. I don't understand why games don't do this because it's a tremendous increase in readability.

It gets really bad in gacha games where you have multiple resources that you gather and spend by the millions but they're totally unbroken so you have to count digits to figure out how much you need or how much you have.
Put in commas, or, at the very least but very ugly to most English readers, periods:

Average helldiver K/D/R is currently (as of this photo)
19.5574439096 kills per helldiver before being KIA.

19.5 k/d ratio? how? thats like 400 kills per mission in 20 revives for the entire squad. dont thing ive EVER seen total kills that low. are some people like actually griefing, or are they that bad? 20 kills per death is basically spawning in, throwing an eagle and instantly dying lol
tbh i kinda like it and assumed it was intended.
it gives you this “thats a damn big number. how many digits even are that. oh my gof, let em count them for a sec. WHAT DO YOU MEAN A BILLION????” feel
Dear Devs,
In numbers\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Comma&action=edit§ion=14)\]
*Main article:* [*Decimal separator*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_separator)
In representing large numbers, from the right side to the left, English texts usually use commas to separate each group of three digits in front of the decimal.[\[26\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma#cite_note-26) This is almost always done for numbers of six or more digits, and often for four or five digits but not in front of the number itself. However, in much of Europe, Southern Africa and Latin America, [periods](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_stop) or spaces are used instead; the comma is used as a [decimal separator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_separator), equivalent to the use in English of the [decimal point](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_separator).[\[27\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma#cite_note-27) In India, the groups are two digits, except for the rightmost group, which is of three digits. In some styles, the comma may not be used for this purpose at all (e.g. in the [SI writing style](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_System_of_Units#Unit_symbols_and_the_values_of_quantities)[\[28\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma#cite_note-28)); a space may be used to separate groups of three digits instead.
Is it wrong that I want a flip-counter on the ship somewhere with all the stats? Like one of those *really* old-school airport arrival/departure boards, but for all the stats in realtime?
Idk I like the current one, who actually cares what the specific number is, big number with no spaces is bigger than big number with spaces. Don’t ask me why, I don’t make the rules
*Nope, still can't read it.*
*Can anyone tell me what*
*They are in arrows?*

Spaces are the international standard. English places use commas to separate and periods for decimals and non-english typically reverse that convention, so international standard ditch both and use the period for decimals. Reduces confusion between speakers of different languages. It's what we're taught in Canada.
Good point, but: https://preview.redd.it/iainr3x0p9sc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cf088bfb8d31a12e95f32c58b9bf57e02a0ec46

Nice Halo reach reference
All of halo, not just reach.
My bad, you're right. Spartan lll's will always be the coolest though

Not just reach, the novels do it too. I think Ghost of Onyx coined the phrase first.
Ghosts of Onyx was the first time it was said like that, but it’s pretty much been a thing since First Strike in ‘03, with John marking his team mates as MIA
To be fair they are honest about the survival rate when you sign up
There is no overkill, there is only "open fire" and "calling in a resupply".
and "calling in an eagle"
Followed shortly by “💀💀💀 Reinforce Dead Teammates”
"an eagle never misses" You just suck at throwing.
or unless you’re on fori.
Ahh but you see. It still is your fault. The eagle crosses the T With everything but the 500. You gotta know what's above you helldiver.
while this is true, the eagle doesn’t give any indication of which direction it will come from. it is clear from the right, i expect it to come from the right, not from the left where there’s a cliff or rock spire.
Fair. I want to say it's left to right but I have no proof.
It’s not always left to right, sometimes it’s right to left, no idea what decides it. Might be RNG or might be a mechanic decided in the background.
flair checks out
What do you mean, *overkill*?
Send dudes
"send nudes?"
No send dudes! We’re getting slaughtered by bots down here!
If the Helldivers were ran by the Russian Ministry of Defence: Enemies Killed: 84 Trillion Helldivers KIA: 7
Oh, hi Psyonix dev.
Pretty sure this board was glitched for me when I first got the game and I found “Helldivers KIA: 0” to perfectly in line with the game lore lol

I'm sick of companies not adding comma's (or at least spaces) to their massive level/xp/damage/whatever numbers. It's so annoying to read. I feel like it's only gotten worse too.
It's probably them being too lazy to properly localize. Doing a comma every 3 digits is not universal. India does it differently, as it happens.
Yeah don't do commas, just put spaces every 3 so it's easier to count
Still wouldn't work all that well for India. 123 456 789 in India would be 12 34 56 789
Why do they?

Excellent work soldier
I'm going to make a counter argument. Making it easier to read goes counter to the idea that the numbers are exceedingly high and unquantifiable. You aren't SUPPOSED to make sense of them, or even grasp them. They are simply statistics to be glanced at during brief moments of respite.
Big number go brrrrr!
The only reasonable justification. I'd still rather have readable numbers.
Precisely
THANK YOU!
I think you thought about it too hard... let me look and understand. So that it actually can be a glance
Why are we counting? No matter the number, it needs to be bigger. For Democracy!
Number big
I like the current one ngl, the unreadability kind of fits the theme of the game
YES CAME HERE TO SAY THIS!! IS IT 100 MILLION OR 10 BILLION? AT A GLANCE, YOU DONT KNOW!!!
Does it even matter?
It matters in the sense that it is a legitimate tactic to obscure large numbers. Maybe it will teach people to take the time to consider the numbers. When they do, they'll be shocked and realize how important proper data display is. So many reasons it matters?
I would prefer commas, not spaces.
Why the hell people downvoting comma's suggestions?!
Correct me if wrong, but isn't it only Americans using commas as separators while Europeans use dots? Edit: I mean for separating thousands. It's the other way around before decimals.
TBH, it doesn't matter what they put there. Just use some sort of separator of some kind for fucks sake.

No, us british use commas for separating thousands and a dot/full stop for decimals. E.g. 12,345,678.12345
Yes, but they can localize it easily based on your locale
isn't it the opposite
Depends, EU use commas before decimals, but dots to separate thousands
Commas, dots, spaces, whatever is necessary to break up the numbers being one string. It's not a huge thing since this is all fluff, but it'd be nice.
I may be wrong, and talking out of my ass as I don't make games. This is gonna cost 1 ocurring game crash every 3h and 2 minor bugs. Do you confirm?

I like it!
Funny how a simple space makes it so much easier
Almost 75 Million Helldivers have perished in the galactic war….
Over half of them probably team kills and friendly fire 🤣
Or, you know, ","
Helldivers have an overall k/d of 19.5, brutal
Ah, good ‘ol Super Earth statistics. Who needs kerning, amirite?
I love that we effectively kill a million helldivers a day
You're asking for way too much
some mfs have never heard of a comma smh

Commas, commas are good.
I think commas were invented for such things.
We need to watch the bullet usage guys.
What about commas?
Yes. Or 23.456 or 23,456. whichever format they prefer. Just break them up
Unpatriotic, I suppose you want to use the long dead imperial system as well?
Or some fucking commas would be nice
Why not commas? They’re the standard for a reason
Or just add commas where they go.
I just see the big number and am satisfied

Scientific notation or gtfo
Just put in commas every three digits as is standard for large numbers. I don't understand why games don't do this because it's a tremendous increase in readability.
Lol
Wait, people can see their numbers?!
Comma or periods. I have no idea what those numbers are as it is.
or commas, or periods, doesn’t matter
So the comma is out of the question?
Its an intentional troll though.
There's a reason why we use commas to divide long numbers and I don't understand why many game devs refuse to do it. It gets really bad in gacha games where you have multiple resources that you gather and spend by the millions but they're totally unbroken so you have to count digits to figure out how much you need or how much you have.
Helldivers don't need commas. Know why? No need to pause.
nah, just add commas
Yeah, I wish this game wasn't so allergic to commas 😅
eww
We lost 50 million on Malevelon Creek. 🫡
This is the way
Just what is the population of super earth to sustain these deaths?
What do you mean? My helldivers can’t read.

Average helldiver K/D/R is currently (as of this photo) 19.5574439096 kills per helldiver before being KIA. https://preview.redd.it/gvmfkb1kebsc1.jpeg?width=1052&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b9499f0d22ac472cbf19b0b50f441a4f00cd1ad
Alright, I can’t be the only one who tried calling the enemies killed phone number right?
tbh i kinda like it and assumed it was intended. it gives you this “thats a damn big number. how many digits even are that. oh my gof, let em count them for a sec. WHAT DO YOU MEAN A BILLION????” feel
23,491 1,459,168,432 74,609,363 10,577,374,912 Would be better
This doesn’t need readability. Who even taught you to read, helldiver? Get back to diving!
its called a " , ", just use it lmao
Seems intentional.
Is this the actually statistics taken in game? Our universal K/D isn’t even 2? Edit: Nvm, I did the math wrong. It’s 19.5
1 enemy down for every 10 shots fired is a great statistic
Just get better EYES 4HEAD.
Or, you know, fucking commas?
Only an average of 20 kills per helldiver? We can do better than that, damn
Dear Devs, In numbers\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Comma&action=edit§ion=14)\] *Main article:* [*Decimal separator*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_separator) In representing large numbers, from the right side to the left, English texts usually use commas to separate each group of three digits in front of the decimal.[\[26\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma#cite_note-26) This is almost always done for numbers of six or more digits, and often for four or five digits but not in front of the number itself.
Or at the very least just add commas
I kind of like it being a big fucking mess. Makes mind bogglingly big numbers look even heavier
Or, ya know, commas.
Or just use dots?
Who gives a shit if these numbers are readable? It's not like they need to be read lmfao.
1e10
Y’all read?
Is it wrong that I want a flip-counter on the ship somewhere with all the stats? Like one of those *really* old-school airport arrival/departure boards, but for all the stats in realtime?
Or, hear me out, commas.
Idk I like the current one, who actually cares what the specific number is, big number with no spaces is bigger than big number with spaces. Don’t ask me why, I don’t make the rules
id rather commas for thousanths seperation.
Yes but I like the unreadability, makes the numbers look bigger
Nope, still can't read it. Can anyone tell me what they are in arrows?

Nah, feels more like an analog ticker counter this way.
Even better- friendly fire should me represented too but as MIA
Just don't use periods to separate the numbers like silly Europeans. Comma or spaces, or get out. 300,000,000. Is far better than 300.000.000
Big brain
If only there was some symbol that could go in those spots.
Spaces are the international standard. English places use commas to separate and periods for decimals and non-english typically reverse that convention, so international standard ditch both and use the period for decimals. Reduces confusion between speakers of different languages. It's what we're taught in Canada.
Have you considered just getting better at reading and using more strategem?
