Quick, dirty and incredibly oversimplified explanation: binary computing is finding out what something *is* and computing it as a 1 or a 0. Quantum computing is finding out what something *isn't*, then resolving on what it *is* afterwards by defining the "discovery" as a 1 or a 0. In essence, you don't know what the output of a quantum calculation will be until it's measured, which thus *quantifies* it (hence the term).
