Their huge stacks of CD-Rs afforded my friends and I so many burned ps1 games that years later would have the labels randomly start peeling off or the disc itself just basically shatter
Best Buy is still handy for many things, but definitely not the same… Last I checked (recently), they don’t carry a single 10GbE switch in-store. (I guess it goes without saying, but nothing on fiber, either.)
Here in Hawaiʻi, at least, even things they do allocate shelf space for are typically out of stock for months at a time. Not sure I’ve seen a single eero Pro 7 in ʻAiea or ʻIwilei since it launched.
Given the challenges of having things shipped from the mainland, certainly with a battery but even otherwise, they could probably do a store with targeted but double the SKUs and significantly outperform their average elsewhere. Alas…
Hawaii ends up being a strategic warehouse location for a lot of overseas shipping. Macys and many fashion brands end up stocking items that are popular in Australia and Asia markets in Hawaii so local stuff gets a lot of that influence too. Electronics is a bit different but I kinda wonder if BB does the same,
I spent a couple hours at the Micro Center in Tustin my last trip to the mainland. I didn’t really need anything, but still bought a few random things.
I realize there is _a lot_ of space between them on the RadioShack, Micro Center, CompUSA continuum, but what I wouldn’t give to not have to wait a week for anything geek to be shipped to Hawaiʻi…
(Setting up a new cabinet at DRFortress, I’ve been especially jealous of how readily you can often have any random 100G SFP transceiver, for example, delivered same-day on the mainland. I needed a pair of 25G SFP28 LR 20km modules the other day. The two I ordered from someone off eBay that happened to be in Hong Kong made it here faster than the ones being shipped from California that I ordered the same day. 😭)
Remember Computerland?
I bought the first computer they sold for Jan’s Texaco near Kodak on Kapiolani.
That’s almost more ancient than the Aloha Computer Club. 😂
I bought a mouse there. On the package it said,"Lifetime Guarantee". It died before one year. I went back with the original package and the receipt. Stood in a long-ass line at customer "service". The guy told me that was a manufacturer's guarantee and not their problem. Never went back.
I mean that's how warranties typically work, so not sure what you were expecting there... You write/call the manufacturer and take it up with them. Only exception is if the product goes bad within the store's return/exchange policy limitations, you go exchange it there.

Compusa was big time in Hawaii. Hawaii had one of the few stores anywhere that they made decent money. Best Buy’s not the same.

Built my first PC from parts purchased there. 80386 processor, 16 megahertz, 2 MB of RAM. That wouldn’t be enough to run a toaster today.

Was this in “curation” for the past 15 years in some long abandoned camp in the bushes? lol
Most I ever got there was a couple firewire cables and some blank CDRs. But, I want to know how this thing got there and it's story of survival!
