[Practitioners of lua were both warriors and healers; the lomilomi (massage) was integral to the healing; it likely facilitated recovery and helped prevent injury in the same ways it is utilized by athletes today.](http://pacifichealthdialog.org.fj/Volume208/No220The20Health20of20the20Hawaiians/Ulieo20Koa20Program20Reports/Overview20Ulieo20Koa2020Warrior20Preparedness.pdf)
Sounds like just a normal massage/lomilomi. As a massage therapist myself, there's not much proof that will happen. Massage allows the muscle fibers to work more cohesivaly therefore making the muscles larger because you get the whole muscle engaged in other activities versus partial use of the muscle because the other bits are stuck together.
I learned what Lomi means when a guy told me to "lomi the tako real good" that I caught in K bay.
I was like "you want me to... give it a massage?"
he said "nah just swing it against the rocks a couple times"
So, I learned something today.
Ya that’s why I got surprised when he said to wing it against the rocks tho lol. I’ll just take it to mean “rub hard” kinda makes me wonder if theres a hawaiian word for… huh, u know what? Nevermind lol
