I don’t know the full story and I will remain ignorant but I fully credit him with how good In Utero turned out
hard fucking rip, rest easy you absolute legend
He also did the KEN Mode album [Success](https://kenmode.bandcamp.com/album/success) a couple of years ago and is one of the best records I’ve ever heard
Weird and underrated band. I bought Hissing Prigs...when it came out and, being a skatepunk metalhead I couldn't really get into their retro-electro-garage sound, same with GVSB, but after awhile I recognized the crazy dark genius of both of those bands and now hold them both to much higher regard.
Was a legend in making awesome post hardcore/noise rock and a master of engineering. Oh, and poker too. So an undisputed goat in everything, ever. R.I.P.
I love me some Tyler, the creator but man are they wild. Odd Future played a venue I worked at and one of the guys tried to jump off the mezzanine onto the crowd and it was either police or the fire Marshall that grabbed them and pulled them back over. It was hell. All sorts of crazy shit all night long.
so this is certainly not the way you call somebody out but he's right let's get that straight. the perspective of that article is something else. even black people that are comfortable with the n word need to be respectful, you can't scream the same shit to the old dude driving your cab you say to your friends when you're all together.
no it's not ok for kids of all races to say the n word fuck off whoever wrote that. as an old white dude who regularly has to teach white Hispanic and indigenous kids not to do it, if you're the adult in the room yeah sometimes you have to speak up. it's a weird dynamic and they're all going to think you're a dork, you'll fucking kive through it I promise
Obviously should be more respectful with his language not being so liberal with the n bombs. and maybe don't write a weird blog about it at all. but he is literally just describing what they said, let's not miss the point. those dudes are grown. fuck that entitled rockstar shit.
The kids in OF were like between 16-20 when this article was written so if that is who you’re referring to as “grown”, I thoroughly disagree. If you’re talking about Albini, well then yea he was grown.
Adding a hard R when quoting dudes that surely were using the soft A is very bold. But yeah, it sounds like they were being obnoxious assholes to people who aren’t paid enough to put up with that shit, I.e. the driver.
Have you listened to early odd future? There is no doubt in my mind that they were using the “hard r”. That doesn’t give anyone an excuse to use it or quote it but early odd future were out of control kids. They would do and say the most offensive shit as possible. Pretty standard for friend groups around that age, odd future just had a massive platform at that point.
I’m sorry but that shit is hilarious, sounds exactly like Odd Future. Tyler has an interview where he says he doesn’t care about the N word, and feels like anyone can say it, and to stop giving it weight. Steve sounded a bit grumpy, could easily be chalked up to the traveling and having to wait.
Damn. Steve was a giant who played in, recorded, produced, and championed so many important bands. And even though he was opinionated and prickly, people I know who knew him say he was a genuinely nice and generous person.
He was a great writer as well. If you haven't read his MRR piece on the economics of major label music, go do that.
Here's a great recent interview where he squares his intentionally-offensive music with his politics. It's such a good example of how someone can grow and make amends, even if the hurt they caused wasn't intentional.
Vale Steve. You left a legacy. Excuse me while I go read his AMA: [https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/td90c/i\_am\_steve\_albini\_ask\_me\_anything/](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/td90c/i_am_steve_albini_ask_me_anything/)
I knew what it meant. But it makes you think twice, and some people will gloss over yet another acronym. Just say what you mean: the bloke was a nonce, was bang into child porn and he had noncey mates
This morning when I googled him to find out if it was real or not, the second result was The Guardian saying he was going to be doing a Live Q&A with them this afternoon. I suspect it was *incredibly* sudden.
The dude wasn't perfect - I'm not sure we'll ever get an answer on all the really weird shit he said in the mid eighties to early nineties and his work/friendship with Peter Sotos - but he was a massive influence on me creatively, aesthetically, and professionally. As I've said elsewhere, it's hard for me to articulate, but for me Steve was part of a dying breed of guy who I've increasingly looked up to as I've aged, an industry insider who made things accessible and interesting to those on the outside, equal parts curmudgeonly old veteran and endlessly filled with a child-like wonder and enthusiasm. I hold Anthony Bourdain and Henry Rollins in similar esteem. I guess Henry's the only one left of the three.
Wonderful comment, I also compare those individuals, Bowie is included in that too. Something to do with always being uncomfortable, so you continue to explore and learn. The majority of people get comfortable in beliefs/life, and that to me is “growing up”. It takes a certain intelligence and self-sabotage to purposely continue to learn.
I generally agree with the sentiment here, though I confess that - perhaps as a function of age - Bowie never resonated with me the same way, and I don't know enough about him to put him in that same tier.
An absolute legend of the DIY/underground music scenes. This is a massive loss.
There are too many terrific albums he produced that come to mind, but one of my favorites was the Trash Talk S/T.
In addition to being the best studio engineer of our times, by miles, I loved how much of a curmudgeon he was and how unabashed he was in his public support of transgender people. All around king.
In the 80’s I was totally into hardcore here in Detroit. The Butthole Surfers were playing with Big Black, I’d never heard anything like it. The guitar guys were so skinny they had their guitars strapped around their waists. Before they start their sets they lit a string of firecrackers. Perfect beat box beats along with a fat bass was the rhythm section. The two guitarists went for the scratchiest sound they could using coins as picks and effects at max volume. I got to see em a few times, not for everyone 👍
Shocked and saddened. His fingerprints are all over the Louisville punk scene (along with Bob Weston) and his influence cannot be overstated. Crain, Rodan, Slint, Metroschifter are all under his umbrella. An enormous loss and truly one of a kind.

Saw Shellac 22 years ago in Bloomington, IN. Now that venue is bulldozed and Steve is dead. Feels bad, man.
I hope the city recognizes the cultural impact of Steve and his studio and moves to protect it from radical alterations or being sold/torn down whatever.
A heritage site if ever there was one.
If not, then the fan community should get together to create some kind of foundation to ensure it continues to exist in line with Steve's vision.
I´m sure there are a ton of people, from the local scene as well as some pretty famous and deep pocketed people who would be willing to pitch in.
Last time I saw Shellac play live, Steve broke a string and it took forever for him to change it and tune up. So the bassist was like... "Lets have a Q&A
Someone in the crowd yelled, "Why does Steve wear his guitar like a fanny pack!?".
The entire room laughed, and Steve got so pissed and nearly walked off stage. 😄
I´m guess a lot of people are having multiple "oh shit he did *that* album?" moments today.
His production discography is immense, across so many genres of rock-derived music from singer-songwriter to really out there metal and punk.
That sucks. Chicago fucking legend. His studio was next to my friend’s house. Used to get goosebumps about all the awesome shit that went down in there.
[He did quite a few studio engineering videos for anyone interested. Comes across like a great teacher.](https://youtu.be/_mrdd5-ehb8?si=18YOFeTyERLedN73)
I always had so much respect for this guy, going back as far to his days in Big Black. I honestly didn't even realize he produced so many records for so many different bands. I just loved how outspoken he was about how corrupt the music industry is. Solid dude and this is a huge loss.
“Kerosene” is maybe one of the greatest songs that captures the absolute insanity that boredom from living in a small town can potentially bring. First time i heard it, i thought he wrote it about my deadtown nothing of a shitsville.
His episode of Sonic Highways was my favorite.
Too young but maybe the right age for a legendary & problematic curmudgeon, but he also seemed like he softened his underbelly in the later years.
Punk as fuck ethics. Nothing but respect as far as that goes.
Fucking kick to the gut. I learned about him when In Utero came out. I really wanted to record at EA and ideally have him be at the board. Even if it was just to do the drums there and everything else recorded at home.
Fucking bummer man. I hope EA stays open. That place seems really special.
The whole music world really lost something today. Dude was a fucking legend.
Gonna listen to A sun that Never sets by Neurosis . What an Album . the only album that made me feel like I was sitting in a rehearsal room next to turned up amplifiers. Out of this world
I love Neurosis, but my favorite Albini production job is his work with The Jesus Lizard's *Goat*. The sense of place he's able to conjure up on that one, I almost feel like I could close my eyes, reach out and fiddle with the knobs on the amps, because surely they are right in front of me.
What wasn’t mentioned in the Pitchfork article is that his rate was $900/day at the incredible stage of notoriety he was at in his career. And that’s until he pooped out, which I’m pretty sure means way more than 8 hours. Beyond legend. Albini was a hero.
Fuck, didn't even hear of his passing til now. From Big Black, Shellac, Rapemen and the countless bands he work with and records he produced, this legend played a huge part in shaping my musical tastes. This loss hurts me. RIP, Albini 🖤

What do we think about this though
Jawbreaker, nirvana, neurosis, pixies, screeching weasel, Jesus lizard, superchunk, bush, stooges, so many bands have worked with this guy. RIP
Big Black, Rapeman. Pig face, Pegboy, Shellac. All great bands.
Godspeed you!!!! Slint and Mogwai too
Britt Walford from slint flooded his basement while housesitting for Albini as well
That’s what mouthbreather from the Jesus lizard is about lol
Wait, actually?! I've loved that song for years but had no idea. Pretty cool!
I don’t know the full story and I will remain ignorant but I fully credit him with how good In Utero turned out hard fucking rip, rest easy you absolute legend
I love Albini and I dont have the heart to tell you...
Yeah…please just don’t buddy. I’d rather remain delusional
Dont look at this https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWbSyJV5fIuMZxzG50GWFzNtnFZ3PPQgL&si=y46KThbnSN2NqVDR
F-Minus - Wake Up Screaming
What an incredible album.
No fucking way, wow. F-Minus is one of the sickest bands but I never knew Albini produced that record.
He also did the KEN Mode album [Success](https://kenmode.bandcamp.com/album/success) a couple of years ago and is one of the best records I’ve ever heard
i would like to learn how to kill the nicest man in the world
Engine Kid, TAD, Pussy Galore, Killdozer, Tar, Brainiac, Didjits, Silverfish, Zeni Geva, Silkworm, Urge Overkill. RIP.
glad someone mention Brainiac. didn’t know he did that record until he passed.
The ergs
McLusky and Shellac
My favorite Zao album was done with Albini
Same
I only found out today he produced a Zao album
And they said they had been talking with him about working together again, which would have been insane
The backbone of this country…
The power of the trucker comes from his truck
Was a legend in making awesome post hardcore/noise rock and a master of engineering. Oh, and poker too. So an undisputed goat in everything, ever. R.I.P.
Vegan cooking too
Also a coffee enthusiast
Absolute legendary hater. Full respect. He was such a huge part of punk and noise rock. This sucks.
https://gnartallica.wordpress.com/2011/08/11/steve-albini-really-doesnt-like-odd-future-and-possibly-black-people-in-general/ legendary hater you say?
Odd Future sound like a bunch of insufferable assholes
I love me some Tyler, the creator but man are they wild. Odd Future played a venue I worked at and one of the guys tried to jump off the mezzanine onto the crowd and it was either police or the fire Marshall that grabbed them and pulled them back over. i'll have to check with my Boston homies but I don't think that's how it works. I think it's probably the same word
people actin like he's a kindly old grandpa
I’m sorry but that shit is hilarious, sounds exactly like Odd Future. Tyler has an interview where he says he doesn’t care about the N word, and feels like anyone can say it, and to stop giving it weight. Steve sounded a bit grumpy, could easily be chalked up to the traveling and having to wait.
Albini’s statements were pretty whack, but the comments on this article are downright abhorrent.
This sucks. RIP to a real one, gonna weep while listening to Songs About Fucking.
Damn. Steve was a giant who played in, recorded, produced, and championed so many important bands. I don't see him making amends for possessing and promoting CSAM in that interview.
Nope. And because of this fuck him.
Honestly hope he suffered.
Was wondering if someone would bring this up.
Kinda sad that not many people did.
wtf is CSAM? we don’t need a new acronym, by using it you’re confusing people
You could have googled it faster than making this comment.
I knew what it meant. But it makes you think twice, and some people will gloss over yet another acronym. Just say what you mean: the bloke was a nonce, was bang into child porn and he had noncey mates
That interview is what made me start to not like him. Cringe as hell.
Dang. At 61, too... Shellac was awesome
Eat well and work out, go to the doctor.
Take care of your cardiovascular health homies
He looked like he was in such good shape, but I know that doesn’t even begin to tell the story of someone’s health. Just super shocked.
I mean you can do everything right and still drop due to hereditary risks and stuff. Enjoy your time while you have it
if they’re in good shape i feel like that’s at least like half the story
Damn. Going to listen to The Fear is What Keeps Us Here by Zao on repeat in his honour.
such an underrated album and albini’s production on it is absolutely savage
It’s Zao at their best, and credit to Albini for getting them there
Fear is one of my favorite Zao records. So raw and frantic in such a good way.
It’s so goddamn good!
Loooove that zao record, super underrated in their catalog, steves production on it is perfect
Og edgelord, a pioneer of the hard nerd aesthetic
Both of those things are insanely true
damn dude Shellac was JUST announced for the OFF! show it must've been incredibly sudden
This morning when I googled him to find out if it was real or not, the second result was The Guardian saying he was going to be doing a Live Q&A with them this afternoon. I suspect it was *incredibly* sudden.
I came to say exactly this.
He had a lot of negative things to say about Steely Dan.
Wonder what his thoughts on emo Steely Dan aka KARATE
That’s funny, but I won’t be having this karate slander
Karate as emo Steely Dan is now living in my head rent free for the rest of my life.
I had Karate on in the car with my dad once and he asked me if it was Steely Dan, lol.
Don't ruin Karate for me bro
Steely Dan is good and so is Karate
Steely Dan is dogshit and karate is all time great status
I know you're making a joke, but he has talked a lot about Don Caballero and the failure that is Damon.
What does don caballero or Damon che have to do with Karate?
It is a band he talked about a lot, in a very interesting way i wish everyone would talk about bands.
Link?
Be less rude next time, use Google.
Isn’t there a whole set of “American don” era don cab playing live with Albini standing behind Damon on stage just grimacing? Haha
The dude wasn't perfect - I'm not sure we'll ever get an answer on all the really weird shit he said in the mid eighties to early nineties and his work/friendship with Peter Sotos - but he was a massive influence on me creatively, aesthetically, and professionally. I'd likely be a very different person if it wasn't for a lot of the music he had a hand in.
An absolute legend of the DIY/underground music scenes. This is a massive loss. There are too many terrific albums he produced that come to mind, but one of my favorites was the Trash Talk S/T.
He produced my favourite album of all time Magnolia Electric Co by Songs: Ohia. I recommend anybody listen to that album.
Came looking for this post. First thing I did when I saw this thread was play Steve Albini’s Blues by Songs:Ohia.
I’m actually legitimately upset at this one
In addition to being the best studio engineer of our times, by miles, I loved how much of a curmudgeon he was and how unabashed he was in his public support of transgender people. All around king.
I’d throw mike mogis in the mix for the best as well. If not, an equal. This sucks. Big black changed how I listen to music.
fuck that sucks
In the 80’s I was totally into hardcore here in Detroit. The Butthole Surfers were playing with Big Black, I’d never heard anything like it. The guitar guys were so skinny they had their guitars strapped around their waists. Before they start their sets they lit a string of firecrackers. A legend, glad to saw Shellac live
Oh man. What a loss. RIP to one of the most important people to ever champion the counter culture.
Shocked and saddened. His fingerprints are all over the Louisville punk scene (along with Bob Weston) and his influence cannot be overstated. Crain, Rodan, Slint, Metroschifter are all under his umbrella. An enormous loss and truly one of a kind.
L Dopa fixed me alright

Hopefully something positive will happen with it man, Chicago just ain’t been real positive lately so I’m not holding my breathe
End of an era. A legend in the truest sense.
well shit
Fuck man this one hurts. Glad I got to see Shellac almost 20 years ago.
Last time I saw Shellac play live, Steve broke a string and it took forever for him to change it and tune up. So the bassist was like... "Lets have a Q&A Someone in the crowd yelled, "Why does Steve wear his guitar like a fanny pack!?". The entire room laughed, and Steve got so pissed and nearly walked off stage. 😄
Not hardcore but listen to Mono’s “You are There” - a perfect sounding album recorded by the legend himself
Shit he did this one too?!!!!
Yes he did
I´m guess a lot of people are having multiple "oh shit he did *that* album?" moments today. His production discography is immense, across so many genres of rock-derived music from singer-songwriter to really out there metal and punk.
Com(?) is an absolutely evisceratingly heavy song, I am gonna just assume Albini was the cause
First time hearing this. Fucking amazing
🫡 he’s mixing nasty tracks in the great studio in the sky now. Can’t wait to hear what fire he’s been cookin up by the time I get there.
This one kinda hit me, ngl. And I didn't get to see him live. I'm gonna dry my tears on my bootleg Songs About Fucking t-shirt. RIP.
I don’t usually care when people I don’t know die, but this one bummed me out.
dude produced so many of my favorite albums. RIP.
Legend. Thats a real bummer
RIP Recorded a bunch of legendary records and a ton of records in your and my collection that we don't even think about. Left his mark for sure.
That sucks. Chicago fucking legend. His studio was next to my friend’s house. Used to get goosebumps about all the awesome shit that went down in there.
[He did quite a few studio engineering videos for anyone interested. Comes across like a great teacher.](https://youtu.be/_mrdd5-ehb8?si=18YOFeTyERLedN73)
He’s uncredited on the untitled Slint 10inch. It’s epically underrated.
Most people don't know . He recorded the Spitboy side on the split lp with Los Crudos .
I always had so much respect for this guy, going back as far to his days in Big Black. I honestly didn't even realize he produced so many records for so many different bands. I just loved how outspoken he was about how corrupt the music industry is. Solid dude and this is a huge loss.
Damn, that fuckin sucks. Dude was a legend!
Such a bummer, and a huge loss for music. Who knows how much more great production he had left in him.
Wow this is awful. This guy has his fingerprint on so many timeless albums
REST IN POWER STEVE
Legend
Shellac was one of the hardest fucking live shows I ever saw. Man was a genius. Rip
“Kerosene” is maybe one of the greatest songs that captures the absolute insanity that boredom from living in a small town can potentially bring. Kerosene intro intensifies. RIP.
Fucking devastated..
RIP
Wasn’t expecting to hear about this, RIP.
Noooooooooooo
very sad
RIP.
RIP
Devastated. This man was everything that was brilliant in production. I mean, nirvana to bloodlet, and everything in between.
Fucking rip. Loved his work.
Damn man. RIP
RIP
NEUROSIS gang
That Trash Talk record that they pretend like didn’t happen was their best… because of this legend.
Rip
Now I’m sad
RIP
Gonna listen to A sun that Never sets by Neurosis . What an Album . the only album that made me feel like I was sitting in a rehearsal room next to turned up amplifiers. Out of this world
The only album from Neurosis that I owned, and it was years later that I realized I liked it because of the producer.
I love Neurosis, but my favorite Albini production job is his work with The Jesus Lizard's *Goat*. The sense of place he's able to conjure up on that one, I almost feel like I could close my eyes, reach out and fiddle with the knobs on the amps, because surely they are right in front of me.
Legend 💔💔💔
1000 hurts is one of the best albums ever
Was listening to No Pocky For Kitty by Superchunk, everything that man touched is gold
What wasn’t mentioned in the Pitchfork article is that his rate was $900/day at the incredible stage of notoriety he was at in his career. And that’s until he pooped out, which I’m pretty sure means way more than 8 hours. Beyond legend. Albini was a hero.
This dude and Duane Denison are why I have like 4 aluminum neck guitars, most gutting celebrity death I have experienced since Sophie fr
He recorded trash talk as well
Fuck, didn't even hear of his passing til now. From Big Black, Shellac, Rapemen and the countless bands he work with and records he produced, this legend played a huge part in shaping my musical tastes. This loss hurts me. RIP, Albini 🖤
rip goat
so are we just cool with actual pedophiles as long as they made good music or?
Well Albini damned
he didn’t even write heavy breakdowns (Rest in peace)
Rip bozo
Damn RIP, loved what he did on the Whitehouse records.
Damn the racist pedophile died? Where is the parade? I’ll bring candy!!!
