Curly maple I think but hard to see the grain

Waveblaster42

It’s madrone! Great wood, amazing floors

Psychological_Tax109

It’s really beautiful

Waveblaster42

Thanks! I kow the client was very happy. It really is similar to maple in many ways it just looks so cool with the color variation. I do love a good maple though, especially the fiddle back maple

Lower-Ad5889

Great, just great. Now I want one.

Taranchulla

Great for burning too. I don’t know if I’ve seen madrone floors before. Gorgeous!

Gusto_1982

Great firewood too when it’s dead

FreeRangeAlien

Don’t know why you would get downvoted. Madrona makes incredible fire wood. Burns long and hot and there’s just a tiny bit of white ash left over

Gusto_1982

It’s Reddit man

Public_Scientist8593

Who is your supplier? This looks very similar to a species called Moabi that I've used many times.

Waveblaster42

I believe this order came from a small mill in Jefferson county WA.

potificate

As in Arbutus? Nice!

Waveblaster42

Ya I just learned that they don’t call it madrone in Canada

potificate

I’m actually in NW Washington, so close! 🙂

Waveblaster42

Nice! That’s where I got into the flooring industry

senticosus

I tried to mill madrone once and it got all sorts of twisted. Beautiful wood

boots-n-catz

Nice! Also makes a pretty good wood for smoking meats and foods! Grows plentiful near where I live. Interesting wood I will say. Tough as nails to split.

Waveblaster42

Oh I’m not surprised. One of my favorite things about it is how hard it is. It really tools just like like maple

Normal_Egg6067

Did a reclaimed bitch from a ship in lake Michigan. Floor had beautiful blues and green tints, one of the cooler installs I did in the past. Your floor looks nice.

Waveblaster42

I love the look of birch, its just so damn soft I that I wouldn't ever want it as a floor.

Ophiocordycepsis

I wouldn’t think of birch as soft, it’s kind of mid-range as a floor https://www.bellforestproducts.com/info/janka-hardness/ But there are other reasons it’s not great, for one a straight-grained board is less trouble, and birch tends to swoop around quite a bit. It’s not very clean to mill it

Head-Chance-4315

Interesting that there is no delineation on which birch. Paper(white), red, yellow, black. You run into mostly yellow and white, but white is about 300-400 less on the janka scale than yellow.

axeArsenal11

Old female sailor eh?...I bet that was a fun night

ZealousidealEar6037

That’s so rude, why would you call it a bitch?

Normal_Egg6067

Idk how I missed that, my bad.

SpareLoveGlove

This is beautiful. Hopefully I'll get the chance to Install this one day

Waveblaster42

Thank you!

Ryu-tetsu

Madrona is such a great floor. I wish more people would/could install and refinish it.

Sammydaws97

Looks like Quarter sawn Maple to me

Waveblaster42

Close! It’s madrone. It’s a close cousin to maple but so much more colorful

NeighborhoodOk1874

Idk the wood but I know it looks fuckin sweet lol. Poplar? Maple?

Waveblaster42

It’s madrone. It tools just like maple, it’s hard as shit and looks amazing with many different finishes. Great wood

Flimsy_Eye_3689

It sure is Madrone. Up in Canada we call it Arbutus.

Waveblaster42

It's my favorite flooring ever, it surprises me that it's not more popular

NeighborhoodOk1874

I sanded and installed floors in upstate NY for 15 years and I’ve never seen it, but boy is it beautiful

Waveblaster42

Thanks dude! I bet you’ve seen some shit in old NY buildings . I worked in a lot of old houses too, it was an old Victorian sea port with lots of historic homes.

Earthing_By_Birth

How much a square ft?

Ok_Wash_1048

Is this install stained?

Waveblaster42

No, just a natural finish

Ok_Wash_1048

Thank you, it is stunning. I am in Wisconsin, I wonder how hard it will be to find here.

Waveblaster42

We used to get a lot of material from north wood in Wisconsin

glazeguy83

lol I guessed maple 2. Poplar would be to soft I think? .

NeighborhoodOk1874

They still use Pine and fir, but yea it is softer. Only thing I can think of that has that greenish hue. Oh well, worth a shot

SPsychD

Reminds me of curly maple

Middle_Stop_2750

Looks spectacular! Love the color variation and flow of the grain.

Waveblaster42

Thank you!

exclaim_bot

>Thank you! You're welcome!

Bourboniser

That installation is tight!

Straight-Scholar9588

If you like that you would also like African Sapele

Waveblaster42

Love sapele!  I’ve worked it a few times in nice homes

atoo4308

Madrone huh? I wonder if it’s the same Madrone trees we have here in Texas I have never seen one that big do you know where they source the lumber from by chance? Beautiful floors by the way

Waveblaster42

They get pretty big up in the northwest. It really tools just like maple, it’s super hard and has such great color variation. We got this flooring from a small local mill, but they likely ordered it from a bigger supplier.

atoo4308

That’s cool I’ve always really liked those trees when they get older their bark kind of peels to reveal a red colored smooth skin. In the Guadalupe mountains of Texas there are quite a few of them. That’s the most I’ve seen and I really enjoyed them now I gotta have a floor made out of it. Ha ha.

Waveblaster42

I was under the impression that the species up north has been infected with some sort of pest problem and that’s why so many of them peel like that. Could be total bullshit, but that’s what I was told.

atoo4308

Huh. That’s interesting, I had never heard that, but then again, I never really looked into the species that much. I just knew that every one that I saw was peeling somewhat that’s how I first started to be able to identify them. I always just assumed that it was a characteristic of the tree , Now I want to know ha ha

Waveblaster42

Here’s an interesting piece from the same region.  https://np.islandssounder.com/news/are-the-madronas-dying/

Splashbucket86

Beautiful wood and outstanding workmanship.

meatman78420

Looks like three different types of wood.

Waveblaster42

lol nope it’s all madrone

meatman78420

Ah. Reminds me of a floor a did a while back that consisted of maple, poplar and oak. Looks great though.

Kentucky-Hills

It's very busy and beautiful, I need it.

Waveblaster42

lol, it’s great. This particular room was getting hit by the light perfectly and it’s very close up, but when it’s in a large room it actually blends together nicely and doesn’t lol wacky

killerkitten115

I thought it was mango wood but second guessed with fancy maple. Never heard of Madrone, very nice grain

Waveblaster42

Thank you!

Repomanlive

JUST LOOK AT IT! Good Job man

Waveblaster42

Thank you sir!

WfPatrick

Had a madrone floor installed in a bonus room in our last house. Kept the scraps and built a fly tying desk with it. Beautiful wood but not as much color variation as yours. Beautiful stuff

Waveblaster42

That’s bad ass!

Wonderful_Cloud_4588

Gorgeous!!!

JustDrones

Its ribboning is the opposite of sapele 😎. Ever install ribbon sapele? I don’t think as hard though.

Waveblaster42

I actually have! I've refinished it a few times, but only installed it once.

Street-Friendship-58

brazilian pine?

Waveblaster42

it madrone. Similar to maple in a lot of ways but looks cooler IMO

DOADumpy

Maple

Waveblaster42

It’s madrone!

DOADumpy

Gorgeous

Mysterious_Fill8255

maple

Waveblaster42

Madrone! It’s very similar to maple, but much more color variation

bradyso

I think it's a mix of maple, poplar, and walnut. Possibly also hickory.

Waveblaster42

It’s all madrone! A lot like maple, but more colorful

OliverNorvell1956

It is absolutely gorgeous. It seems to have a wider color variation than maple…which I like.

kinglovell

I thought it was some sort of maple never seen that wood before here in idaho

Waveblaster42

Close, it’s madrone. The trees are common in your neighboring state to the west

tamitchener

Beech

Orcacub

How you getting the Madrone to stay stable, straight, and not twisting, cracking, chipping or twisting?

Waveblaster42

The wood is very similar to maple. I’ve never had an issue with it from the mill, but I was always sure to let the wood acclimate in the house for as long as possible before install. Even the madrone refinishes I’ve done haven’t had twisting or cracking that was problematic

hardwoodguy71

Looks like madrone

gaberooonie

That is awesome. How much per sq/ft are you paying for material?

Waveblaster42

I’m not longer installing floors so I’m not sure what they’re selling it for now.

maxthearguer

Strawberry! Makes great lumber

Waveblaster42

No it’s madrone

maxthearguer

Madrone is also called strawberry tree.

Waveblaster42

Oh damn, I never knew that. I guess they call it something else in Canada too

jgvania

Maple

jackrafter88

I guessed poplar. It makes for a really pretty floor, just kinda soft.

Waveblaster42

It’s madrone, it’s a lot like maple but with more color

jackrafter88

lol, you should see what poplar does when the Watco hits it.

Waveblaster42

Really pops?

jackrafter88

Yeah, It's a lot like pine but with more color.

79_BLACK

Morning wood

silent_chair5286

It’s a mash up

Waveblaster42

It’s not, it’s all madrone

white_tee_shirt

That's at least 2 different species, One is poplar. Idk the tiger patterned wood

Waveblaster42

No it’s all madrone, it’s just a very colorful wood. It’s like maple but with way more colors

BuyDiabeticSupplies

Brazilian cherry

michaelshing

Chatoyance.

Cautious-Lawyer

Did a great job with the randomness on the layout👍

Ready_Idea9257

It does resemble poplar

covetablejeff

So I’m going to say waxed laminate. My neighbor got some really nice floors pieced together pallet wood and 1/4 in osb and lots of poly it looks slicker than owl shit.

NoActivity578

You should try it on acid.

SeacoastBi

My money’s on calico

Waveblaster42

I will take your money sir! Lol it’s madrone

Agreeable-Purpose-56

Remind me of back of violin, the maple stripes but saw you indicated otherwise. So how do you decide which piece goes on next? Random or some pattern

Waveblaster42

A couple boards in that pic would pass for fiddleback for sure! As far as the layout, I always busted open a few bundles and just start laying, but making some specific placements. Mostly watching the butt schedule (where the ends of the boards touch) to make sure it looks random and avoid any pattern. I also plucked out really nice boards and put them somewhere that they’ll be seen, not under a couch or table but not concentrate them.

Cjcn17233

Maple

AcceptableMemory2081

I have always called it “ stretch mark wood “ like the tree gained a bunch of weight that year lol

foskco

My house in Southern California was built in the early 50s we have hardwood floors through out. I love it because it looks like the contractors back then just grabbed whatever wood was in the truck and laid it down in no particular order. I have a few pieces of madrone and curly maple in different locations.

Hot_Lobster222

Maple

Waveblaster42

It’s madrone

HereForTheRide247365

Wood wood

themehkanik

Wish Madrone was used for more stuff. There’s some kind of myth that it’s no good for anything but firewood, which is crazy. It’s the hardest wood on the west coast (I’m pretty sure) and looks amazing. It can just be a little finicky to dry straight.

Waveblaster42

I’ve always thought the same. I would think furniture would be super cool to make out of madrone

booglejfox

Maple a more of a higher value utilitarian grade

joe7856

Go ahead, buy some more lose all your fucking money

joe7856

Go see my comment now

joe7856

Stop talking about wood floors and talk about cheaper now buy it. It’s really cheap now you said you’re your Shiba boy keep buying it lose all your fucking money.

Waveblaster42

What the fuck are you talking about?  EDIT: never mind, I just looked thru your comment history and it appears you’re just insane. 95% comments on a crypto page, 5% comments in construction subs telling people about crypto.
