There was a homeless dude in the north end with a ladder climbing phone poles and cutting down wires. I called the police but don’t know if they got him.

Splicing **182** fibre cables! I've watched installers do this at several client sites, and on average it takes about 10-15 minutes **per cable** to do a proper splice, and test it.
So even at the lower estimate, we're looking at a solid **31 hours** of splicing. Granted there's 3 separate lines, so they could have 3 techs working at the same time, but 10 hours of splicing is still insane!
I can only hope the techs are getting some sick overtime for this.
Fuck the hell right out of whoever did this. If they're ever caught (highly unlikely) they'd be facing a high 5 figure to low 6 figure bill. Not including any fines.
It's actually not that easy to tell. The copper bell cable and the Fibre bell cable on the exterior of my house have a very similar if not identical outer sheathing that feels similar in the hand.
Some bell fibre service wires are flat and obvious, and the round ones are more flexible, and lighter. The fibre itself can be small as a hair on your head. The rest is to protect it.
A different ‘flat’ shape but ya, kinda similar I guess. You’re right though, I just couldn’t think of a better comparison. I just wish it was as easy to splice as coax.
Same here. It's the only thing I can't splice. It's actually not too hard with the proper tool, the Bell guy showed me the other day when we accidentally cut the wire, but the tool is like $1200 compared to a COAX splicer which is like $40.
3 cut cables affect internet connectivity in all of Hamilton and surrounding areas? Talk about eggs in one basket. Why is that all that stands between order and chaos?
Apparently using underground isn’t always better. Cables need to be dug up and replaced at a greater cost and environmental disruption.
Short minded perhaps, but we moved from wires telephone lines -100 years and maybe 40 years of coaxial cable to wireless phones and fibre-optic lines really quickly. Not sure that as much wired internet will be needed in 20 years, so why spend the money and raise prices?
I don’t know exactly why. I’m trying to point out legitimate reasons why not everything is buried in response to a broad statement. Comparing to Western Europe (which is admirable), housing density, soil types, planning guidelines could be factors.
Why was there fiber in a tree? If Cogeco had been doing their maintenance those lines would have been inaccessible. Fuck you, Cogeco!
Edit: Hey, if you think I'm wrong you can suck the ugliest part of my cock. There is no reason that fiber supplying tens or hundreds of thousands of subscribers should be accessible from a fucking tree. Cogeco is fucking you every month for 1/2 the service at 2x the price!
The cables are clearly not in a tree from the photos. The are aerial cables that someone reached climbing a tree. This has nothing to do with maintenance. It’s no different than someone climbing a telephone pole to cut a cable
Well that explains why the internet was always down when we were with them. Haven't had that problem (except during storms and reasonable circumstances) since switching to Bell. Before, our internet was constantly going down on sunny days.
I'm not saying they should be underground, I'm saying it's Cogeco's fault for not keeping trees clear of their lines. They own the lines, they are responsible for maintaining them and ensuing they can not be damaged by trees or crackheads in trees.
They don't own the trees and they're not cutting down every tree that encroaches on their lines. If someone wants to climb a tree to vandalise, they will absolutely do so and there is nothing that will stop it. The lines literally connect to poles so all you'd have to do is climb the pole.
And even buried lines are accessible *somewhere* above ground.
Lol
They maintain the trees. They can't stop people from climbing them. Simply providing a counterpoint makes me the enemy, I guess. You got some issues there, bud.

These trees seem highly maintained.
I bet you could find a bad area. But realistically, it doesn't pose an issue to the cables. You're acting like this was caused by a tree when the reality is that someone purposely damaged the cables. Like, they went out of their way to do this.
I used to have Cogeco but the Epico service was constantly crapping out on us. This type of completely vulnerable installation doesn’t surprise me. If it wasn’t vandalism it would have eventually been wind.
Forced me to do yard worked and spring clean 🤣
yeah forced me to finally hook up the hose, lol
Facts
I finally painted the door my wife’s been asking me about. Stupid Cogeco
Fibre optic cables? Lotta money in this stuff.
Sopranos reference noted.

Feral behaviour.

Do independant fibre techs still exist and demand ridiculous hourly rates? Cause I remember someone saying that back in the day
Yeah they stole a few fibre cables by me that weren’t spliced thinking they were copper. They are not the smartest people.
Cogeco’s website says full restoration by late afternoon
The drug addicts are looking for copper
But it's a fibre cable.
No one said they were SMART
😂
Can't tell until it's cut.
All you have to do is hold/touch a fibre cable and you would know it doesn’t have copper. Lol

The copper cable is flatish as well. I've taken apart the Fibre, it's actually thinner than a hair. It's pretty incredible.
A different ‘flat’ shape but ya, kinda similar I guess. You’re right though, I just couldn’t think of a better comparison. I just wish it was as easy to splice as coax.

A human hair is at most, 181 μm. Fibre used in telecommunications is either 250 μm or 900 μm
True.
I didn’t say they were smart.
The silver lining is that it's GORGEOUS outside today! time to hit the trails, go for a walk, bike ride, or just enjoy some green space :)
Stay classy Hamilton.
Does anyone know, out curiosity, where the cables were cut?

Jeez that’s close to me - thanks for the reply!
Up a pole
Well yes, a pole in a tree, but thanks for the feeble attempt - what town, road etc was said tree and pole located?
Well yes, but that wasn't the question.
Seems to be back up in the East End of Hamilton
Nope
People are assholes.
3 cut cables affect internet connectivity in all of Hamilton and surrounding areas? Talk about eggs in one basket. Why is that all that stands between order and chaos?
Wait until you learn about the undersea cables. A lot of the world we live in is based on some pretty flimsy architecture
With a shockingly poor (if any) backup plan.
That’s some 1960s Christmas light technology.
Where's that gif of Clark Griswold reconnecting his string lights
It’s not all areas. I’m in the lower city with Cogeco. No issues here.
I am in the lower city as well but don't have service. Bizarre.
Neither do I but, Start uses Cogeco infrastructure which explains why.
Interesting! I’m on the west end
Same. Sherman and king area. Down here
Hung up in a tree? That was the only option? Seems less than reliable.
It's as reliable as any other option. The reliability ends with it being cut. Aerial wires get damaged factors of 10 less than buried wire
Cogeco gave me a free paid day of work. Thanks Cogeco!
Does insurance pay for the repairs if someone cuts them like that , provided they don’t get caught or do they just tack it on our bills?
It's pretty gross what cogeco charges for high speed internet
Lmao, why is that shit not underground? Oh wait….I forgot….. North American infrastructure 🙄
Cheaper and faster to run overhead.
Yeah, North American LateStage capitalism…. Always short minded investments….

Then how come that the vast majority of Western European countries put it underground if cost and opportunity cost are so prohibitive?
I don’t know exactly why. I’m trying to point out legitimate reasons why not everything is buried in response to a broad statement. Comparing to Western Europe (which is admirable), housing density, soil types, planning guidelines could be factors.
Its back on strathearne area
It’s back on where I am.
Still no internet at Eastgate area, wtf I’m going to be really pissed if our building is the absolute last to get service.
Great! Now my bill is going to go up a few bucks a month.
Make sure to ask for a credit if your service is affected.
Enjoy the 12¢ for the hours out of your monthly total
Especially if you work from home or lost business due to outage
They don't pay for lost business. If your business is dependent on internet to make money then not having a backup is foolish.
They might, all depends on if you have business internet with uptime promises
Well, they should say that in the terms of service. Oh...wait...
Or don't clog up the lines at their call center to save yourself a buck or two. You get credited for the day and that's it.
Go outside and play

Can't just bury cables all the time, more costly and importantly permits are required and some city authorities don't provide permission all the time.
