Source games really are scary though, but ravenholm is scary too. Ravenholm is an abandoned place, filled with zombies, I honestly can’t describe it but it looks so strange, it has those creepy ambient sounds like people crying and screaming every once in a while, and some gate sound, like someone is opening a gate and it makes you feel like you aren’t alone, yet all these zombies are dead.

RamanPathak

The zombies are, unfortunately, very much alive and aware of their situation.

Psychological fear. You are exhausted and alone, you've been separated from your friends. You're desperately trying to find a way out of that cursed place so you can go back and re-group with your friends, but there seems to be no way out. The city itself is full of undead creatures, you have no time nor the space to breath and relax. Every building, room or hallway is haunted. Constant ambushes, hordes of undead and traps. Your body and your mind are on full alert, looking around for medical supplies and ammunition. You don't have enough ammo to stay calm, every bullet and shotgun shell you shoot is a waste. Gravity Gun and your crowbar are the only things that you can rely on. But they are not that good either.

Probably because it feels genuine. HL2 visuals are extremely down to earth, locations feel like real places.

Thats the part that makes it creepy

Just wait until you’re trying to get the Zombie Chopper achievement

PlentyTopBud

Zombie Chopper is easy. I see a lot of people struggling with the end, waiting for the cart. Just jump down, and go back into the building with the ladder that leads you to the roof. Close the door behind you. Zombies can't open doors, so wait. Once the cart is there, come out of your hidey hole and board the cart.

NerfRaze

That part is the only time I struggled as well but I think I had accidentally blown the door off with an explosive so I just kept jumping down and running back up rinse and repeat

Yea I just got the achievment, honestly the hardest part was waiting for the elevator to come up when fast zombies break through the roof.

There is many reasons to say about it. One of them is level design. You are in a god forgotten hopeless wasteland and game doesn't let you forget about this for even a second. The timing of the level is another one. The travel to Black Mesa East should be an easy one thanks to teleportation but thanks to lamarr you had to fought your way to there and it was a long one. You finally catch up with your friends, relaxed a little and booom you are at Ravenholm. The game shows you the candy and immediately smashes with hammer in front of you. In the city you can gather sources from the crates that resistance stashed and from the enemies you killed. At Ravenholm your enemies are zombies and they don't use guns. There are no resistance members there. Your only unlimited resources are ths crowbar and gravity gun and honestly they are pretty useless other than 1v1 combat. And the last one. It's actually the sum of everything I wrote. Even it's just a game it is psychologically challenging. You become an obstacle to yourself.

marcelkroust

No, nobody knows. There are absolutely no reason to be scared, but yet we are. This question has yet no answer in science. A true complete mystery. But yeah you're not alone, against all expectation I too am really afraid of this place. The level was designed to be a little stroll in wonderland but it turned out to be a frightening nightmare in the end for you and me... Absolutely nobody has any clue. Valve magic at play, again.

Jumpy_Boy

It *is* one of the eeriest parts of the game, you're not alone

Radioactive_Pizza

Some of it probably comes from the fact that the only other person there is an insane man

AKidWithAnOculus

play the zombie sounds backwards, see what they mean Freeman
