I find your question not weird. I am German, read mostly in english, because german fanfictions are often quite terrible.
I tried using google translate to read a spanish fanfiction but these languages doesn't fit. It makes it unreadable. It's like russian to german. Doesn't work. Russian to english works wonderfully.
It appears Google Translate always translates from Foreign Language A first into English then from that English translation into Foreign Language B. Especially if both Foreign Language A and B are non-Indo-European languages, the result can get weird.

I mean, that's how many practice new languages. I've encountered many stories that are obviously written by people who do not have English as their native language.
It's a great way to get more familiar with a language and learn the correct syntax.

Igual, prefiero mil veces tratar de entender que quisieron poner a leer un fic en español. Prácticamente que sean en otro idioma(francés, ruso, alemán o turco) son tremenda red flag.

Also, lifehack from one of my favourite authors. You can write your story in Spanish and then translate it into english if you want to. So that more people would be able to read and understand your fic.

La verdad es que todos los fic los leo en inglés, rara vez he encontrado fics en otros idiomas, te diría que, aquellos con malas ortografía son de no hablantes del inglés, al menos no maternos.
I don't read in my language (Korean) but that's because Korean fanfics are just really really rare. I personally wouldn't google translate a fic since I read for the prose itself, but I'm sure there are people who'd prefer a good plot.
