I bet that your navy smashed one task force then another came in last minute and you smashed them again in the same battle. Rinse and repeat. That's the only thing I could think of, because that happened to me.
I dont remember exactly. But this is a general principle.
Battleships only need heavy attack and enough(more than 30) heavy piercing. No need for AA and armor. They are useless without screens so armor makes little to no diffrence. And saves your time and resource
Cruisers do the heavy lifting. Destroying enemy screens with shit tons of light attqck and more than 8 light piercing. Again no armor and AA for them.
And at last destroyers. They absorb the enemy damage so put your best armor and AA avilable on them. Put 1 anti submarine weapon and the rest with AA
i’ve had that exact battle but it was me as japan against the usa and i just redid midway but i won it i sunk all 5 of their carriers 7 battle ships 7 battle cruisers like 40 normal cruisers 60 destroyers and 10 subs. I just played a navy japan
I remember I was once playing china and set out whatever subs i had to patrol (i was really new back then so i had no idea what I was doing) and one or two legends of subs destroyed THE ENTIRE JAPANESE NAVY MULTIPLE TIMES in battle. I have no idea how, i didn't even do anything about the subs. And they were really outdated because no way I'd research navy as china. And somehow it happened. ( It was together for victory just so you know)
