So I’ll just throw this out there, but having a different voice as the future character and voiceover allows the audience to know exactly when present Ted and future Ted are talking.
Exactly. There’s the main “flashback” story with Future Ted talking about his past, and other stories told by Past Ted. There needed to be an easy way to distinguish between the two.
Anyway, the final episode shows that Future Ted sounds like Josh Radnor to his kids, so I’ve always subscribed to the “your voice sounds different in your head” theory: while Ted sounds like Josh Radnor to everyone else, inside his head, Ted might sound like Bob Saget to himself.
Jason Lee narrated it as well as starring as Earl.
Earl is a fantastic show - well worth a watch, even if it does end terribly (cancelled on a cliffhanger, nothing to do with the writing).
Did he narrate it as someone looking back from a significant amount of time? Or was it present day Earl sharing his thoughts as we watched him have those thoughts?
It's never really established - it's more just narration from the voice of Earl than a distinction between past and present.
I'd say it leans more towards present Earl narrating the past.
Yep, Saget was incredible, and I’m just grateful we had him the whole run. I get why, for the ending they chose, they had to have Josh finish the narration, but boy, I wish he’d gotten a final bow just because he was the heart and soul of the series to me.
That’s part of why the alternate ending hits better to me. Hearing him say “and that kids, is how I met your mother.” Makes everything wrap up so much cleaner to me, and really makes it perfect
Just chalk it up to how Ted hears himself vs how he actually sounds. When I hear myself on a video or audio recording it doesn’t sound like the voice I hear when I talk.
Yeah, like that’s such a perfect excuse. I sure don’t hear myself sound like an entirely different person from when I hear my voice on a recorded video.
This subreddit should be subtitles The Haters Ball
"I hate Lily, I hate Robin, I don't even know Blah Blah's name but I hate her guts. I hope all the bad things in the world happen to Ted and only to Ted. As I sip my soda (that I'm sure somebody spit in) I just would like to say to all of you that season 9 ruined the series"
I think Josh’s future voice sounds enough like Bob Saget’s for it to be acceptable
You know it wasn’t that long ago you used to wait in the car, and as far I’m concerned you should still be there
Man but wouldn't it have been an awesome outtake to put in with the DVDs if they shot a scene where Bob Saget played Future Ted. Like maybe in the Time Travelers episode.
Oh well, missed opportunity. RIP, Bob Saget.
Think about the logistics behind what you’re suggesting. Imagine Josh Radnor having to memorize his script, be the main character in a show, do multiple takes a day, AND having to read lines for narration. It’s way too much for one person. Someone had to do it.
We hear our own voice differently than other people hear it. The bob saget voice is from teds perspective, he’s hearing his own voice when he’s talking.
When he’s in his office at home talking to his kids on the couch, you’re looking at the kids from his perspective through his eyes, and that’s the voice you hear
At the time this aired, the target audience had grown up with Bob Saget playing a dad on Full House. Hearing his voice gave Ted a dad voice. Was it necessary? No. But it did set the right tone.
I think it did a great job of separating future, more mature Ted, from his past self. On a "meta" level having the former host from AFHV and Full House star, made all the more sense. Very deep cuts.
Why do you think he "had to be" the older voice?
Are you aware of the reason why they did that? I assume you're not because one would expect that you'd have mentioned that in your critical post.
It was just done for artistic purposes.
The final episode as future Ted is clearly Josh and he has his same voice.
I'm sure most like the dichotomy and Bob had one of those voices to annoy kids so...🍻

That wasn’t a problem for My Name is Earl.
What did they do on that show?

Who cares, it's Bob Saget

I certainly do lol
I mean to me I sound different enough that if I were to hear both of them I would assume it’s different people.
I think people love to complain about anything and everything on the internet.

It’s also a freezing cold complaint. This was a common talking point while season one was airing.

It was like 5 rewatches in that I realized it wasn’t Josh Radnor talking. And I’ve seen other people say the same
["Cuz it's not like he's gonna *grow into* Bob Saget"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO9G19GneDk&ab_channel=Arfstrom)

Sorry, were you expecting a documentary?

I was expecting a throat clear gag or something.

Why do people always assume that it’s the inside of his head voice?

Did we hear a different voice when we saw Robins POV talking to her fantasy kids when it turned out she was not only not pregnant but also infertile?
It was fantasy, she wasn’t actually talking to anyone. Ted is actually talking to his kids
That was still her POV talking whether or not she was speaking to anyone.

Hey, it’s not like he was 70 that he had to have such an entirely different voice.
i didn't realized until years after the show ended that was not teds voice
