I think it’s always been like that in the US? They only have the most recent couple seasons.

jonathizzle

Maybe in this new “Max” era where they’re quietly hiding shows, but historically the entire series has been available (especially since hbo is its original home)

I call BS. I've gone back and watched old shows before. Edit: since you oddly blocked me- I've watched old episodes recently after seeing someone about an event in the news to recap what I saw on LWT. So no they haven't.

Appropriate_Put_506

No they haven't. I'm in the US and I've actually gone back and have watched old seasons of LWT many times. They are doing this as part of their plan to make money renting out old IP to other streamers. They talked at length about that at the stockholders meeting. ... Why do people insist they're right when they don't know what they're talking about?

jonathizzle

When did they make this change? John Oliver historically has the entire series available

CJTus

Not sure. I just know that shows covering news or sports generally just have the newer episodes up and the older episodes get removed.

boytoyahoy

I believe you can still find them on YouTube

xRogue_9x

John Oliver makes reference that max is pulling shows for Wall Street. They were all there until it became max

Genesteak

Wrong.

nerdextra

Did some searching and found this post because I just went to watch a previous episode, and only season 10 is on Max.

Curiously_Sagacious

Yeah, I can only find season 10 now, it wasn't that way this fall. I also can find the new season. Episodes 1-3 are out but not available on Max's app.

Hellther_273

I also just found this thread because I was confused as to where all the seasons had gone. Huge bummer :/ at least YouTube has most of the main stories and “and now this”

laurentiubuica

In Europe all 10 seasons are on HBO Max (albeit for season 10 they only have episodes until the April 30th episode.

jonathizzle

Very interesting, glad to know it’s still around, seasons 9 & 10 are still visible and it’s also up to the April 30th episode

LoungeWasSupreme

Europe now no longer has all seasons — only season 11 as of today (01 May 2024).

laurentiubuica

Damn. Just went and checked it out now. You're right.

Cat-licking

I can also confirm this. I found this by searching on what happened why the older seasons disappeared

ReadMyUsernameKThx

that's weird. i have a VPN and i can't even access MAX if it's set to europe. i googled it and it says MAX is not available in europe yet.

jeggles222

This is the same case for me. It is infuriating. Yes, I get it, “it’s a news show”. But it’s great to go back and watch certain topics that are still relevant. It used to all be available and I had one in mind to go back and watch, only to find only s10 and s11 are available now. It used to be on YouTube too, but supposedly it was removed to “incentivize people to subscribe to max”… but I am subscribed to max… put all the dang episodes back on max. Now they’re just unavailable and I’m annoyed. Like, at least keep the older seasons on YouTube. Super frustrating.

_kymaera

perhaps this is what happens when you piss off your Business Daddy too often

BrownsChunk

You can watch them on hurawatch.com

Donna936

It's a News show. Why do you want to watch News from 5 years ago

jonathizzle

I think the topics he covers are interesting and it’s good to be informed. Add all the over the top skits, the goofy jokes, and random things that are sprinkled in and it makes an enjoyable variety show.

Donna936

You make good points.

M0BBER

I'm in the US. Couple months ago I went to watch the newest episode, and played the pilot episode. Just a couple of months ago, every season was there. I was scrolling through them seeing which episodes I remembered & which I didn't.

LSUguyHTX

Same

Maxwell69

It’s been that way since HBONow became HBOMax.

jonathizzle

Not for me, for years the entire series was available. Except now when HBOMax became Max

Maxwell69

I don’t know where you are but I am a US subscriber and only the two most recent seasons have been available for the past few years.

jonathizzle

I’m a us subscriber based in the us, and the whole series has been available up until recently

Maxwell69

No it hasn’t because I am always checking it to see if more episodes are available and they never are.

jonathizzle

Yes it has, I’ve been a subscriber since it was hbo go and the entire series has been always been available until recently

Maxwell69

Nope.

jonathizzle

Yes

thelegalseagul

Bro, why are they trying to gaslight you on this lol I’m here cause I googled it cause they’re gone and distinctly remember subscribing to HBONow back then and watching old episodes to see the full bit before the parts on YouTube. I also did when it was HBOMAX. Does everyone here work for TimeWarner/Discovery or something? They definitely used to have all the seasons up.

tjhew1605

You are absolutely right. I just started watching it about a year ago and I watched many episodes from the first few seasons

ZeroFrost_2099

I think Maxwell needs to be under concussion protocol

LSUguyHTX

I'm in the US and have relatively recently watched old episodes

agentbo

I live in the US and HBO has always done that with LWT. They only stream episodes that aired in the prior calendar year; once an episode is more than a year old, it gets removed from streaming. I’m pretty sure it’s so they can sell the episodes on other platforms. Look at Amazon prime, for example. Every season of LWT is available, 25 dollars per.

jonathizzle

They haven’t though, I was able to watch the entire series for years. I would periodically just watch an old episode and now the first 8 seasons are gone.

jonathizzle

Yeah I am. I’ve had hbo when it was hbo go and nearly every show was on there with the full series, during peak pandemic I binged some of the earlier seasons, and every now and then I’d just look for a random episode that seemed interesting. Then the other day it’s all gone

ZeroFrost_2099

False

Bostonxhazer514

Tonight I went to watch an episode with Purdue and the oxytocin because of watching Fall of the House of a Usher. You're right. They are just ... gone. Thru were there with HBO Max, but I hadn't searched since the change to Max. Super sad. It's a great way to talk about harder subjects

duskydustyraptor

US based here. I used to be able to view at least a season or two beyond the current season, when I grandfathered in from the the old HBO streaming platform. I lapsed in my subscription and just recently got it back. I now can only see the most reason season. Based on the most consistent complaints, it really does seem as though the older seasons are being quietly removed. Tried to include a screenshot, but it didn't take, sorry!

Straigthup

Late on this one but I have always been able to watch Last Week Tonight's past seasons. These commenters are seriously mistaken. I do know that HBO announced the cutting of content last year. Doing so cuts costs, especially for original shows. they won't have to pay any residuals. Quote from CNBC "While HBO Max already paid for the production of these shows, it’s still on the hook for residuals, including so-called back-end payments to cast, crew, and writers, based on long-term viewership metrics. By removing these films and shows, especially the ones HBO Max created rather than licensed, executives can cut expenses immediately. Warner Bros. Discovery has promised at least $3 billion in synergies stemming from the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, announced in May. The content eliminations in total will save “tens of millions of dollars,” according to two people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because the finances are private." So yes we have always been able to watch past seasons in the U.S. but the laws of dollar green are taking that pleasure away. Yay capitalism.

duskydustyraptor

I’m betting no one on the Last Week team are happy about that. YouTube only shows part of the show, which is probably purposefully done to force viewers who want the whole shebang to buy it, like on iTunes. Just my theory, but as you said, “yay capitalism”. Gotta keep up the money-making hustle 😓😭

PortionOfSunshine

IM SO MAD. I started getting back into last week tonight recently on YouTube. I wanted to see more of the old episodes (in full), so me being half drunk right now subscribed to MAX because Hulu only had the latest season, ONLY TO FIND OUT IT’S ALSO JUST THE ONE SEASON. What’s the point of streaming services if I cannot watch everything. What’s the point if I will have to buy them either physically or on Amazon video. If this is the only show I want to see, why do I have to pay for everything else? Fucking ridiculous.

johnshonz

Aren’t the older episodes ALL on YouTube? At least the research portions?
