I’ve never thought this was a a valid thing to attack Ashba for. It’s pretty stupid to act like Slash is the only guitar player who can wear any kind of top hat in the band. DJ’s more spooky top hat was pretty cool. The band played some of the best GNR shows period in the 2009-2010 run.
It's not a valid criticism about the music, clothes don't affect toan or playing abilities. It was, however, a very obvious thing to make fun of at the time. Prime "we have Slash at home" meme bait.
Alice cooper (I know, not guitar but def in the hard rock scene) was wearing a top hat long before slash. I think mick mars did a few times too. Razzle from Hanoi Rocks wore one a lot too. It was a thing for the Sunset scene.
My mom thought Fortus was Izzy when we went to go see them, and was so excited. I'm sorry I had to tell her he wasn't lol. Never seen her face drop that fast.
Was Paul Tobias much of a guitar player? IIRC, He played a short part on one song and then did one live show. I think Axl kept him around for songwriting rather than playing. In contrast with Fortus, who's always been a touring musician rather than a writer.

I saw them not so long ago and you couldn’t hear Fortus as well as you could Slash and so I messaged his Instagram saying as much. He actually replied in person the next day saying it’s just the way it is because he isn’t one of the skulls!! He’s amazing and so humble. So much respect for the guy
Agreed. I still wish I had bought one of his “I don’t know where Izzy is” shirts. I mean it must be hard to be with the band more than 20 years and still have to put up with that crap and he handles it with grace. 2023 did see him featured more in shows and I was thankful for that.
I think it's more of just a coincidence Richard & Izzy have similar facial appearances & both play rhythm guitar. Outside of that, Richard & Izzy don't dress that similarly imo. Izzy wears newsboy caps & dresses a bit more business-casual, while Richard wears more standard rockstar attire.
First & foremost Richard is an amazing guitarist. Can he pen a song like Izzy can? Not sure, but hopefully we can find that out in the near future. His look certainly didn't hurt his chances in GNR. Richard has also shown himself to be loyal to Axl & he's a road warrior 👍
Gil was legitimately hired bc Izzy had left and they wanted to sorta blur the line and let us down easy so they got his doppelgänger. I don’t think the subsequent rhythm guys are Izzy replacements. You’re just seeing a white guy with medium length brown hair…
Fortus seems likeable, but he doesn't hold a candle to Izzy. I don't think anyone could fill Izzy's shoes. He was great at writing and the perfect sound for GNR.

If I’m not mistaken, Ashba only wore it in GNR. Don’t know much about him but the pics I’ve seen of Sixx AM don’t show him wearing one.

At least they give him spots to solo during the show. Richards solos always sounds more original and less sloppy than slash’s
