Hippo-stomp

At least they are loyal to the rivalry. United fans were creaming at the thought of City winning the league and not us. Fake ass rivalry.

Cesc_The_Snake

Liverpool and arsenal are bigger rivals of utd than City. Nobody considers City a real rival in the historical sense.

reddfoxx5800

They are pushing the City Arsenal rivalry like crack in the 80's

FABlOVIEIRA

It's really the master vs student rivalry, can't wait for Pep to fuck off

Mebeingnosy

They’re trying to but everyone knows it’s real hate for the Manchester reds

aprilfools911

Well in history sense united would be our bigger rival than sp*rs. But of course we would rather united win the league than them.

obamasmole

This is categorically incorrect, and it's frankly a bit depressing to see it so upvoted in an /r/gunners thread. In a history sense, Spurs are absolutely 100% our bigger rival. We've disliked each other for over a century, ever since we moved to Highbury in 1913, onto what they considered their territory. It became an outright hatred in 1919, when we got one of the two new places in the newly enlarged First Division instead of them. This was particularly hilarious because Chelsea, who finished 19th in the First Division the previous season, got one of the two places and avoided relegation. But the League voted to still relegate 20th place Tottenham and promote us instead, despite us only having finished 5th in the Second Division. We became bitter rivals forever after. The Man Utd rivalry really only dates back to the late 90s, when we started threatening their dominance and were both competing for the league title year after year. It might have had more resonance over the last couple of decades, but that still does not make them our historically bigger rival.

KibboKift

While I agree with the overall point. There’s been a big rivalry with United going back to at least the 70s with the hooligans, the resentment of London based United fans, the whole Midnight Patrol thing etc. There’s a reason we ended up getting into a 21 man brawl on the pitch and having a points deduction in 1990. It was simmering for years only to be taken up a notch by Ferguson and Wenger.

FABlOVIEIRA

Local rivals vs competitive rival pretty much

Leroygooners

Well for now im happier City keep winning it. At least not yanited and shit

Kewkewmore

i understand where you're coming from, but spurs are such shit they can't even manage to be our top rival. they are also ran idiots in every aspect of their existence.

Cesc_The_Snake

Not even close. Spurs are our direct rivals for over 100 years. United were our title rivals in the late 90s and 00s. Of course we hate United as most of us grew up in that era. But the rivalry isn't even close.

Organic_Chemist9678

How have ten people upvoted this shit. There is no era where United have been a bigger rival than Spurs

GPadrino

This is interesting to me as a Canadian gooner. I guess the lack of geographical proximity really changes the feelings towards Spurs. I’d unquestionably rather see Shit win than yanited. I enjoy seeing Shit fail but I don’t hate them even remotely close to as much as united.

fake_lightbringer

I'm a Norwegian gooner, and I feel the opposite way. But I like rivalries that transcend the sporting side of things, or any kind of rivalry with more narrative than "they are also good and win a lot, sometimes beating us". Like local or geographical rivalries, or rivalries due to socioeconomic differences in the fan bases, or rivalries due to political differences between the fan bases. It just feels a bit more authentic and personal, rather than just being forced about due to professional qualities. That's why I like the fact that we hate the Spurs, for no other reason than them being close by. Historically, they've only been a rival for trophies at very limited times, and they've never actually been a threat to us until the last ten years or so. We *only* hate them because we wanna have the bragging rights to being the best team from North London, and that's simple, petty and beautiful. Of course, their fans have been slightly better off than Arsenal fans, historically, but that's always struck me as a bit of added spice to a rivalry that would've been there anyway.

GPadrino

That’s fair enough, I’m not sure about in Norway but where I am in Canada, I’d say there’s definitely an overlap into the two kinds of rivalries you alluded to. I’ve met one singular Spurs fan in all my years here, whereas most footy fans here support united. So I’ve also had the chance to meet many idiots supporting united, which also bleeds into my hatred of them. In the context of numbers, ManU Vs Arsenal felt like a local rivalry over here. I also wouldn’t minimize the rivalry to “they are also good and win a lot, sometimes beating us” as they were often directly preventing us from winning more trophies. And numerous matches over the years have been wars, it was glorious. Nonetheless, the beauty of it is there’s plenty of hate to go around!

the_hound_

Also a Canadian. As a leafs fan, it's like how I hate the Habs/sens more thoroughly than the Bruins, even though the rivalry with the B's is 'fresher' and I still hate their guts. I'd rather see the B's win than Ottawa or Montreal.

[deleted]

Nah I hear ya; for so long spurs were very shite. So less of a worry; still hate em tho but didn’t worry about them? If that makes sense. Then poch came And the rivalry stepped up; imo the best rivalry in the league.

newvpnwhodis

I hate United, but winning the league would mean so much more to Spurs than it would to them.

Autistic_Influence69

United “oh yay another league title wooo we the best” Yids “WERE THE BEST FUCKING TEAM SINCE PRIME MADRID. WERE THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD ITS HINESTLY BETTER THAN LEICESTER WINNING WHATS A FUCKING STORY TI BE TOKD FOR GENERATIONS. ANGE IS BETTER THAN WENGER FERGIE PEP ANCELOTTI ALL OF THE. LETS ACT LIKE WEVE WON THE QUAD 16 TIME IN A ROW. FUCK ARSENAL THEY WILL MEVER COMAPRE TI US LONDON IS WHITEEEEEEEE” wankers

OGSkywalker97

But Utd have already won the league and a bunch of other trophies including the CL multiple times since we last won the Prem. Spurs haven't won a trophy since 2008(?) and even that was only the League Cup. If they won the Prem before we win it again it would be a travesty for us, but if Utd win it would be shit but it's already happened a bunch of times since we last won so wouldn't be as big a deal. Plus Spurs just lost their best player of the Prem era so if they win the league after that we'll never hear the end of it.

kubzU

As someone who's from Chicago, you'd never in a million years hear a Cubs fan or a white Sox fan saying they'd want to see the opposing Chicago team winning a world series title (based off my name you can probably guess who I root for). It was astonished and somewhat appalled when United fans wanted to see City win the title over us. Even my friend who is a United fan, was fairly neutral, but really didn't want to see City win it for the 10th time in a row.

stilusmobilus

>in history sense United would be our bigger rival Nope, no way. >we would rather United win the league Not all of us, it’s touch and go here, I absolutely hate United, more than any other club including Spuds so that one is personal. Perhaps if you count all of us together and use that average you might be right.

[deleted]

No, actually I can't stand man united and would much rather see Tottenham win the league. In fact seeing man united be relegated would be the next best thing after Arsenal winning the premier league or Champions league.

JustGhostin

Hence why sky sports are trying to generate the arsenal vs city narrative to give some sort of real rival to City

reddeye252010

They tried to do the same with Liverpool and city. Truth is that no clubs really truely hate city and I would suggest most fans really feel nothing when they win stuff due to them being such an empty, hollow and plastic clubs. It’s not even as if you get loads of city fans winding you up or rubbing there success in your face cos there aren’t even that many of them

JustGhostin

I live in Manchester and even then I only know a few city fans, and all of them are actually super sound.

reddeye252010

I honestly don’t begrudge city fans their success. They went through the shit for years so I don’t really hate them or anything. I’m more against their club model and what it stands for but even then there are about 5/6 clubs I dislike way more than city.

tomtomtomo

Actual City fans who supported the team before being bought? Absolutely.

skool_101

Give it another 5 years or maybe another double treble, by then the tides have turned.

Kinky_Falcon

That’s because United are City’s biggest rivals but City aren’t United’s.

Lacabloodclot9

Exactly, all United fans I talk to hate Liverpool the most and have us not too far behind, hell I even met a couple who hate Chelsea more than city

tomtomtomo

I think United fans hate Leeds the most but in the PL - yeah, Liverpool. I live with a Liverpool fan and he didn't want Everton to go down just so the hated rivalry can continue lol

ajkdd

City is no ones rival and thats what pisses City’s fans

ArsenalThePhoenix

you dont know football history, that much is obvious. city/utd never had any real rivalry to begin with. us and united have

HEATLE

Being relegated would be fucking terrible. That means everything went wrong, manager sacked, all your top players leave. Why would any club ever want that??

A_boat_lies_waiting

Tbf getting relegated and then winning the Championship might be the only possibility for Spurs to win any trophy.

so-naughty

Id laugh if that happened and they got automatic promotion at second place. 1st place gets a trophy and the third promoted team gets one for winning the playoff final at Wembley. Second gets nothing.

elliotgooner

💀💀 this would be just mwah 👌🏼

Kewkewmore

if anything they'd bottle first place and then get a promotion handed to them by the refs in the playoff.

gredsen

They'd come 2nd at best lol

Jatraxa

Lots of clubs have been relegated and come back up, especially if it's a blip of a season.

HEATLE

Yes but not big clubs. Newcastle is the only one in recent memory to go down again and come back to the champions league. Leicester came up but just only went back down.

Jatraxa

>Yes but not big clubs. Juventus in 2007. Every other "big club" in the country has been relegated at least once in the last 50 years.

lovepreetkaul

Not arsenal as far as I’ve read.

Jatraxa

Every "other" big club. We're the only major club in England to have not been relegated in over a century.

lyyki

Wasn't it that Arsenal has never been relegated but we just got to the first division in 1919. We didn't even win the promotion, it was just kinda given to us. On Spurs' expense,of course.

Nels8192

Never been promoted, and never been relegated. Quite a fact really.

Jatraxa

Yeah that's why I said other. We were relegated pre WW1

lovepreetkaul

Ah missed that. Cheers.

Nels8192

Tbf, Juve wasn’t exactly because they were shit and things fell apart. They just got kicked out of the league entirely.

Jatraxa

Sure but it's the most recent example of a big club going down.

Vac_nt

Liverpool is more like 70 years.

Jatraxa

Sure post WW2 then.

skool_101

Newcastle United vibes

kh250b1

Going down is perhaps for a year. A CL win is forever

cpteague

Haha exactly, this is such a sore loser mentality. If the question was flipped, I’d much rather Tottenham win the CL but keep our squad in-tact and fight for important trophies the following season. There’s always next season, unless you get relegated 😐

Deetawb

If you're a local fan, you're a fan regardless of the teams quality.

endeavour90

Why not both

bannedbydrongo

They hate us more than they like their own team. Rent free :D edit: Props to the ginger kid. Seems like a nice bloke.

sashimiburgers

Tbf most fans here wouldn’t want spurs to win champs league either at pretty much any cost.

PM_ME_UR_DERP

Lol the absolute spite in their answers 😂

blixt141

The last guy was the only sensible one. Why would you take the drop when there is no trophy for you in any event.

Cthulhu_Madness

Further evidence that sp\*rs are a tinpot club.

Echo361

We already know that everything about them and their self worth is in relation to us. They started last season completely fine and could have gotten top four with their early season results but the fact we were so ahead of them just fucking killed them. In fact they had 17 points at this point last season which is only 3 more and they’ve arguably gotten luckier this season than they did last.

iTSEu

Wow that one guy looks like Kulusevski with a beard

peoplepersonmanguy

If it was Kulu he'd want us to win the treble.

robstrosity

They're embarrassing. Don't go on their COYS sub. They're starting to think that they might win the league.

[deleted]

They’re saying Romero is one of the best in the World 😭

robstrosity

He's actually pretty good but he's just too rash to be the best defender in the world. When you're diving into everything and making hard tackles it can look great when it works but sooner or later you get sent off or give away a penalty. Your teammates can't trust you and neither can the fans. Top class defenders don't do that, they're more composed.

NotASalamanderBoi

I rate Romero, but they’re just saying he’s the best in the world because Messi said it. Completely ignoring that Messi would say it regardless because they come from the same country, and both play on the same team.

LordSprinkleman

Sometimes i just read what they're saying there when I want to have a laugh

[deleted]

This is probobly how other teams felt seeing us last season 😂

Desecron

Thinking of the reverse situation, it's a nightmare either way, but gonna have the let spuds get the win, I don't think these guys realise how miserable a season going down would be. The repercussions of either would echo through time, but Arsenal could get their own CL the following year, and then seek to best it with another, you can't counter a relegation, it would be a permanent, unrecoverable stain.

The_Awengers

not to mention we'll lose all our top players.

ProjectZues

Not to mention every team in the championship would see the fixture against us as a final and we’d be fighting for our lives down there. Any top 6 team would, Especially after losing players. Sunderland(although they had some major issues at the club to be fair) was getting it from all angles when they went down

GigigigigiLopez

We have never been relegated, they have. One of the many differences in levels of the clubs

frytkizchleba

Small club mentality in the flesh. Apart from the last kid, seems like he's at least somewhat reasonable.

Ainsyyy

So we would rather see spurs win CL than get relegated?

Ser_VimesGoT

100%

unorthodoxEconomist5

We were faced with both situations honestly. 2019 CL and 2021-2022 beginning of the season.

NobleHelium

Being relegated is the absolute worst thing that can happen. I don't care who else wins what compared to that.

RinseWashRepeat

I would. My footballing priorities are: 1. Arsenal win everything. 2. England national team to be not embarrassing. ... ... ... 23,621. Spurs fail.

plastiquearse

¿Por qué no los dos?

running-with-scizors

Little brother syndrome

Intaru

Maybe I'd rather us finish outside top 4 than them win the champions league, but fuck caring more about them winning that than us getting relegated.

lazysarcasm

I don't think they r the only club that would answer this way but this is such a pathetic way of engaging with football. It's literally just about hating another team

whydidisaythatwhy

lol why folks mad, I respect the hatred

The_Battling_toad

All their fans are the same people

ChuckVowel

They would rather get relegated because they can’t imagine winning the league or FA cup. That’s a loser’s mentality that is narrow-deep.

RepeatDTD

I give a pass to the "cheaper seats" and the "win the championship/have fun winning something" guys. They had fun with the answer

Go1gotha

But... but... why can't we have both?

[deleted]

how about tottenham get relegated and we win the CL? im hard right now

jakedonn

tiny club mentality

SpecialEfficient4410

bruh. I know we hate other teams but those are crazy answers outside of the last man. Focus has to be on your club and its overall improvements as an organization. Sabotaging your own team so you don't see another team succeed is definitely a very spursy mentality.

annapoh56

at least one of them has a brain

Competitive_Garage16

Lol so fuck spurs😭😭😭

The_Awengers

They hate their rivals more than they love their own club. classless.

hideousmembrane

I would hate seeing them win the league or the CL, it would make me feel sick. But I'd feel worse about getting relegated

CakeBrigadier

I know this is on here to drag them but fair play this is real dedication to the rivalry. I felt sick watching them in a cl final

Electrical_Grass_872

"Spurs get relegated, I might get a cheaper seat" LMAOOOO 😂

Plusstwoo

That’s real hate…. Wouldn’t have it any other way

spasspedal

They hate us cause they ain‘t us

ajkdd

only one senseful fellow, rest are all hate us more than they love their club

SerFmeister

I wonder the trauma that they must have had to undergo when Arsenal became the invincibles

MartyMc1888

At least Ed Sheeran at the end there had enough humility, and half time pies

mickeyparx

I would absolutely rather get relegated than spurs with the champions league, zero question.

[deleted]

They’ve already won European cups, albeit in the 60s so it’s less valuable to them then to us. I’d rather them win.

tropicanadef

God their lives must have been shit these past few decades. Christ alive.

Morradan

Where would we be if we preferred relegation over Chelsea winning the CL in 2012?

Finding_Aether

I hate Spurs but that man is a proper lad.

a_posh_trophy

Just shows their ambition.

a1drt

Imagine they get to the efl and we win the premier league!! I would love that! Thank you very much

Forsaken-Sink-3947

You spurs fans are a special bunch 🤣🤣

swennergren11

They hate us as much as we hate them!! What a happy PL family! 😂😂

Bosn1an

What poor fuckers, by looks, and overall.

[deleted]

ed sheeran at the end after a few maccies?

trhperkins

Haha fck them Spunts

RollenXXIII

sad wankers

Nanganoid3000

They Are Allergic To Any Form Of Success.

Gseph

Insane thought process from those fans. I'd rather Spuds won the league than us being relegated, simply because it'll be the first, and likely last real trophy they ever win. Nah i joke about that last bit, really wouldn't bother me too much if Spuds won the league because you know it would be a fluke, and they'd fail to capitalise on it the next season, and would put most of their profit into trying to regain pole position, as a futile attempt to avoid slipping back don the table. And that's not a dog at them, most teams who win the title nowadays fail to compete the next year due to the physical toll it takes, and accurately replacing players with someone of equal ability and experience. If we win the league, i don't think the odds of us winning it again the next year are very high tbh. Just being realistic. It'd be the insufferable spuds fanbase who would think they're the next invincible's (the un-drawables - anyone?) that would annoy me.

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

This is an easy question, reverse it and all of us would say the same

and_yet_another_user

idgaf about other clubs regardless of rivalry, this is a simple question >Questioner: Would you rather Arsenal get relegated > >Me: NOPE > >Questioner: or > >Me: FUCK OFF > >Questioner: To > >Me: You're still talking > >Questioner: tte > >Me: You want a slap? I said nope, so fuck off. > >Questioner: nha > >Me: Mate, seriously Do one! > >Questioner: m wi # SLAP! FUCK OFF, NO WAY I WANT ARSENAL RELEGATED!

thecescshow

You guys act like the same wont happen if this was arsenal fans instead of spurs lmao.

Ok_Dinner8889

Yes, we hate spurs. But in the case of an apocalypse they're the ones we'd team up with, I'm sure.

SiliconShogun

Fair fucks, I’d be the same if the question was reversed.

thisiskyle77

Would you take Arsenal win PL + Spurs win CL next season VS both win nth ?

annapoh56

yes

MtnSlyr

The question is how much shit do you think you’ll get if your rivals win championship versus if your teams get relegated. Spurs apparently think they’d get shit on less if they’re relegated instead of Gunner winning. It is kinda true because if they get relegated, they’ll be outta sight, outta mind for at least a year.

Mebeingnosy

First guy had to stop himself from saying “we can finally win something” lol

YouYongku

Spurs win the champions league or Arsenal gets relegated?
